Hi all.
Just found this forum completly by accident, but damn, I'm glad I did!
However, there is such a wealth of inofrmation on here, I'm finding it tricky to filter out what I need at my level, so I thought I'd ask a couple of questions.
I have an Orange SPV M5000 that I have done nothing to except install some apps on it. I know there are rom upgrades available, including an official one from Orange. What is the best one to go for, and what exactly does it change? I've seen some posts regarding speeding up the speed in which the screen can rotate, but not noticed any posts on the speed of answering, which does seem slow on my M5000, especially if it's closed as I have to wait for the screen to come on, then rotate, and finally bring up the phone app before I can talk, will it help this?
What does the radio upgrade do? Is it a valuable upgrade or just a slight performance increase?
If I do any rom upgrades, will I need to do a complete re-install and setup from scratch?
What other things should I consider doing to generally increase the whole smartphone thing?
Thanks in advance for any help, there seems to be loads of people on here that have some valuable knowledge!

Info to find info about your device.
ooooh dude, you got a lot to learn....
I will try to answer your questions.
I have done nothing to except install some apps on it.
THIS IS GONNA CHANGE, THE MORE YOU HOLD IT, THE MORE YOU INSTALL, THE MORE YOU INSTALL THE MORE YOU REALISE YOU DIDNT REALLY NEED IT.
I know there are rom upgrades available
THEY ALL HAVE AN UPGRADE RELEASED NOW.
What is the best one to go for
I THINK IMATE OR O2 ARE GENERALLY ACCEPTED. I USE IMATE. IF YOU CHANGE FROM ORANGE, YOU WILL BREACH YOUR WARRANTY.
what exactly does it change?
IT SHOULD SPEED UP THE ENTIRE OPERATION OF THE DEVICE, SPEED UP THE ANSWERING OF THE PHONE, AND SPEED UP THE SCREEN THE ROTATION, IN FACT, EVERYTHING SHOULD BE FASTER, SMOOTHER AND MORE EFFICIENT.
THE RELEASE ACTUALLY PROVIDES PUSH EMAIL, SUCH THAT YOU CAN HAVE ALL OF YOUR EMAIL PUSHED/SENT TO YOUR DEVICE, RATHER THAN HAVING TO PRESS SEND/RECEIVE TO PULL THE EMAIL TO YOUR DEVICE.
BATTERY, BLUETOOTH AND RECEPTION RANGE IS ALSO BETTER.
speed of answering,
IT WILL SPEED UP YOUR ANSWERING, BUT THE BEST WAY IS TO DISABLE THE PHONE PAD THAT USES THE VIDEO CALLING FUNCTION, IF YOU DONT USE IT, DO A SEARCH AND CHANGE THE REGISTRY TO DISABLE THE PHONE PAD THAT USES VIDEO CALLS. IF YOU DO USE THE PHONE VIDEO CALL FEATURE, THEN THERE ISNT MUCH YOU CAN DO.
which does seem slow on my M5000, especially if it's closed as I have to wait for the screen to come on, then rotate, and finally bring up the phone app before I can talk, will it help this?
NOT IF YOU CONTINUE TO MAKE SO MANY STEPS, WHY DONT YOU JUST PRESS THE GREEN BUTTON ON THE HINGE WITHOUT OPENING THE DEVICE. OR ARE YOU CALL SCREENER? I ANSWER ALL MINE IF I CAN, SO I DONT NEED TO SEE WHO IS CALLING.
OTHER OPTION, LEAVE IT OPEN ALL THE TIME, AND DONT CLAM CLOSE IT.
ALSO, EXTEND THE PERIOD OF YOUR RINGING, SO THAT INSTEAD OF 10 SECONDS, EXTEND IT TO 30 SECONDS, IT WILL GIVE YOU MORE TIME TO ANSWER IT.
What does the radio upgrade do? Is it a valuable upgrade or just a slight performance increase?
IT IMPROVES RECEPTION, RANGE, QUALITY, AND SPEED OF ANSWERING. THE NEW ROM HAS THIS UPGRADE ANYWAY.
If I do any rom upgrades, will I need to do a complete re-install and setup from scratch?
YES, EVERYTHING IS TOTALLY WIPED OUT, SO SYNC YOUR DATA, COPY EVERYTHING TO AN SD CARD, AND NUKE IT TO START AGAIN.
What other things should I consider doing to generally increase the whole smartphone thing?

This should give you enough reading, enough background knowledge, enough to be dangerous, but not enough for life to collapse around you.
If you need any more information in relation to your questions, ask.
Thanks loads for this, it's just the kind of response I was after!
I shall wade throught the links you've provided shortly, and I shall take the plunge with the rom upgrade soon too.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer everything, I shall lurk with renewed vigor.
Hi,

Can some one summarize the unsolved / pending problems with WM5 upgrade on SX66 Cingular version?
No reply recd so far shows that no one has clear picture of whats working and whats not working.. so sad ... or people dont find time to compile the list.
I wanted this list to be prepared so that one decides when to switch over to WM 5.
Any feedback?
This is why people browse the forums. Kinda unfair to ask someone to compile a bunch of items for you when all you have to do is read. I agree it would be nice but still unfair.
I have an idea, read the forums, make your list, and post it for the rest of people who may come to this site.
Point is, there is no set list. It varies by device and by user and is dependant upon a number of factors....
I have no experience on implementing WM5 on SX66 and thus as asked by you can not work on the list of pending problems and publish to others.
I am not that enterprising that I jump into the update without caring what will happen to my device.
To me it looks that only few problems are pending and rests have been already resolved.
Not to be argumentative...
This is a developer's site... research, test, provide feedback on the results... basically try to contribute to the community.
If you're not enterprising enough to help with testing, maybe you should put together a list based on the main "resolved WM5" thread, and possibly maintain. People would be more inclined to provide feedback...
If you want a stable code for your SX66, use the 1.40c rom which is pretty baked. If you want WM5, it will definitely require a little beta-tester bleeding.
I have WM5 on my sx66. I am having no problems except for the ones that everyone is having on all the phones.....
1. Bluetooth disconnecting after so long.
2. Bluetooth disconnection after pressing power button.
3. "G" in today bar always showing even with no connection. (Did not happen in 2003se)
That's it.
Biggest problem unsolved problem for me is the wmodem application to use the phone as a modem connection for a pc.
rschell and jsosow : Thank you very much for such a positive reply.
As for the abovementioned 'G' icon in the top bar there is a registry change / cab file that can remove that annoyance.
I don't have bluetooth disconnection problems so much as when I hit the power button to put the device in standby (and really stretch out the battery) it turns bluetooth off. I've just made it a habit of re-setting my PZP standard profile when I turn it back on and need to make a phone call. Annoying yes, dealbreaker no.
Performance is a little wonky at times. I have the 530mhz overclock.cab developed here, and while it is good, sometimes it can choke a little. You have to turn off some of the sound effects to get it running at a decent speed.
Hopefully there is another WM5 'leak' we can use to get this puppy up to production quality, as of right now its very close!
Where is the "G" fix? I seemed to have missed it.
BT problem fix
BT fix for WM5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31779
The only other problem is, e-mail accounts are deleted if you remove the battery.
Sorry to annoy everybody, I have had my M2000 a while now and there are a few things I would like a hand with.
1) I unlocked the M2000 and am currently using it on O2 pay and go. However I cannot use GPRS, if anybody could help me out by telling me settings and/or how to connect properly I would be very grateful!
2) I am running Windows Mobile SE Version 4.21.1088 (build 14132) are there any upgrades possible at all to be able to use Windows Media Player 10? I don’t mind upgrading operating system as long as it doesn’t cost too much.
3) Is there a way to back up just my text messages from the M2000 so I can have them saved on my computer and/or my 1 GB SD card?
4) Finally (sorry about this) does anybody know why sometimes when I make calls I can’t hear the dial or the person talking but they can hear me? I have checked the volume (I'm not that dumb) but resetting it is the only thing that works, which is pretty annoying.
Thank you very much for your help. I know there are probably a million listings with these answers but if you could direct me to them or give me your own verdict I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks again.
1. do a search in the forum maybe excluded to the networking it forum
search string should be something along these lines "gprs AND payandgo"
or something like that
2
read this
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM5_Home
3. again search for something like "SMS AND backup"
Thanks for that Rudegar, if anybody else can help me out on this one too, I would really appreciate it. You gave me a link to download WM5, are you currently using WM5, and would you recommend it? I have no programming experience really and it looks quite complicated to install so much so I don’t know what some of the files are etc. will there be an easier version where all you have to do is click a button and it will auto install? You’re the clever one here so ill do whatever you recommend, ill take your word for it. Thanks again Rudegar, if anybody else can help please do.
Thank you.
I have had my M2000 for about 2 months and for about the last month i have also been have the same problem as number 4, where people i call can hear me but i cant hear them, when i fiddle with the volume slider on the side i can sometimes (only sometimes) hear a split second of sound from the other person, its SO annoying having to reset
could be a radiostack issue
maybe an upgrade of it will fix it
also had some issues with my xda2 when people call it sometimes take awhile before they can hear me
the cause of that is bluetooth tools which seem to be trying to direct my call to my bluetooth headset
dont matter if i have a bluetooth headset though it still try take about 10sec before they hear me then
Hmmm, glad to hear I'm not the only one with that problem. It is really annoying though having to reset it when i need to make a call. I'm worried about using a radio update as I don't have a clue about who has made it and what it will do especially if its a con. Where can i go about getting a trusted Radio update? Talking about updates, is there a ROM update available?
Guys install this cab file it will fix your problem..
Or while you don't hear the other party just turn on the BT then turn it back OFF this will solve..
read these pages

I have taken a huge risk in installing WM5... Well I'm doing my best anyway. I need some help though.
I have so far got to re-partitioning and formatting my device but whenever I press format an error message comes up saying "Error FL_IOCTL_FORMAT_PHYSICAL_DRIVE failed" what the heck does that mean? can anybody help me out?
Big thanks to everybody who has helped me out so far with this and for anybody elce if you can help me, please do.
Thanks.
Anyone know if it is possible to remove a cab file like this after I have installed it? I've loaded it and it seems to have screwed up my pocket pc.
Thanks,
Cian
PHEW!!
I'm so glad i didn't install that cab. I was weary to start with and I'm glad i didn't it appears to be some sort of intruder on a pocket PC which jumbles up the settings. Just for anybody elce who is about to download it, take some advice, DONT PLEASE!!! I'm trying to upgrade my ROM but orange are crappy and dont supply ROM updates yet. Ill try the I-Mate Update. Fingers crossed. Thanks again to everybody who's helped me out!
Hi - great site loads of good info
Ok i have a few questions i cant seem to work out even after reading ! so no laughing !
Phone is a SPV M2000 on Orange monthly pay sim,
What is a Radio Rom ? - does this mean this phone has a radio built into it ? if so how do i unlock it / get it to work ?
My Operator version is 5.31.1.162 / ROM 1.31.00 but i have some problems with the phone - mainly when the phone rings or i dial people ..... basically we cant hear each other or talk, kind of like its on mute or something ? ..... a soft reset usually sorts it but it is really annoying and happens on and off ...... also the phone seems slow ? ..... i have slid the memory line over to 2/3 system memory but still a very slow i think ? .... ive tried searching for a patch that someone talked about but cant find anything ?
Can i upgrade to a new ROM ? ..... id like a UK spec if possible as i don't want funny things going on to the system in foreign languages !!! i have seen a T mobile one, could i use this ?
i have just done the sim unlock and it seems to be ok although i haven't tried on another sim yet
please try and keep it simple, with good links etc if needs be
Thanks in advance
Dave
Hi
Ill answer what I can, as im pretty new to this too.
The radio is not a FM type radio, but the electronics that do things like WIFI and Bluetooth.
The no sound issue is a well reported bug.
I have an orange spvm too and I had it replaced.
The support line took ages to acknowledge the fault, but in the end replaced the phone and this so far is working well.
If for you it does not, then by law you can reject the phone as having an inherrent fault regardless of how old it is, as it was not of mechantable quality when you got it.
The speed,
I noticed that even when you click the little X in the top corner, the app is still running, so this will slow it down.
Your best bet maybe to every now and then do a soft reset just to clean things up.
The Tmobile Rom.
Not sure, as Im also thinking about this.
What I want to know is , will this Rom give me Tmobile settings?

Hi Dave - Welcome.. Remember, we all have to start somewhere..
The first thing I would recommend is reading.. I'm not too sure if you've discovered the Wiki on here but this is truely the best place to start..
So, simple links:
Start here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel
A link from this page (titled Getting Started With Your Blue Angel) will lead you to updating your BA to where it will be of most benefit.
This is where you need to start thinking of what's of more use to you.. I, for example, have not updated my BA to WM2005 (or WM5 as it's more commonly known) as I would not be able to Sync with my Work PC easily. In other words, the latest is not always the best! You need to think of how you're going to use your BA and by trial and error, get to your own conclusions. Although saying that, feel free to seek advice on how others have reached a similar conclusion.
If a "seach" (top of the screen - Highly recommended  ) doesn't reveal an answer you're looking for then a simple post with something like "Having problem "X".. Anyone else have it..?" is a lot better then "NEEDED - ANSWER TO MY WORRIES!"
This is outlined here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4534
My second piece of advice is to make sure you know what you're doing.. If fiddling with yor BA is going to lead you somewhere you don't know then perhaps fiddling with it is not what you should do. I don't want to see posts from you stating "HELP - MY BA's BU**ERED!" because you thought that Reading Wiki was for saddos
Remember - Don't run before you can walk..
Tip for Hearing problem - Turn on the Bluetooth and keep it on.. This is a well documented tip for solving the issue.. Updating to the 1.42.00 Spec ROM will also help too but you're right in saying that it will give you the T-Mobile settings.. What you can do there is use the search facility to find if someone has posted a .CAB file with the Orange SMS/MMS Settings
So, start reading..
Hope this helps..?
Cheers,
Hi Dave
Great response by Mr Philly and I wholly endorse everything that is stated.
I am also a newbie (I think this is my first post) and if you want to know anything, wiki is the place to go.
There is a newer Orange UK ROM avalible (Not as new as the T-Mobile ROMs and part of which I have used in my own update) and if you follow the steps through wiki you find out how to apply the roms and where to find them.
I have read in this forum on a number of occassions don't mess with it unless you are prepared to lose it and that must be kept in mind. That said I been really pleased this the usage and function with my SPV since making the ROM updates and my thanks goes to a number of very gifted contributors.
Good luck
simjo.
Hi Guys -
Listen, many thanks for taking the time to reply .... I have read a fair bit but was starting to get muddled up with all the acronyms etc .......
But i now have a more important issue at hand ...... i went out last night and lost my 512 memory card (bugger !) ...... must have un clicked out (i was a bit merry last night) ..... anyway ...... i went to use the phone this morning and its silent ...... no sounds whatsoever, no ring tone , no key pad tones , no sound when playing media files etc .... silent as a whistle .......
long story short i reset it (soft) first ........ no joy ...... then hard reset ..... when booting up it pings and makes a few sounds, so the speaker is obvisously working ....... then once reset its silent again ..... ???
But this is the really bizarre thing ..... if you plug it into the mains charger it all works fine, with loads of lovely sound !!!! ....
Ive made sure the sound is turned up to max and its not on silent etc btw
Time to read the forum i think ! ...... the only thing i did last week was unlock it ..... but its been working fine since then ?
cheers
Dave
next weird update !
after 2 days i have upgraded to the latest roms etc and the phone still had no sound .... i left it on charge for a full day overnight etc , still no sound ...... came to play with it this morning and there it is all working as good as new !!!! ...... lovely sound etc, all normal ......... go figure that one out ?????
you know what i think its ridiculous that this site asks for donations nobody ever helps out its just ridiculous you might as well waste your money on a lottery ticket at least you 'might' get something in return!!!!!

hi twiggy,
how can I help you (even that i'm not getting donations here)?
buzz
no ive given up on asking for help ive posted several posts over the last few months and to be honest ive got more help speaking to a brick but thank you for offering DONT DONATE
I have donated, but to be honest my meagre contribution is but a fraction of the value that I have had from xda-developers.
I have unlocked my xda and my xda2. I used the special ROM and later the ROM Kitchens to upgrade my xda. I have downloaded ROM images for my xda2 and learnt how to tweak the extended ROM. I have used buckets full of advice given by the members of this forum. I have had many laughs and smiles reading through the posts.
Xda-developers has been worth every cent/penny of my donation (and probably loads more too). I am waiting for an unlocker for the mda-pro. If it happens then xda-developers or buzzdev will get my next donation.
I haven't expected personal service with replys directly to me. I just read the posts that interest me (and some that don't) and make use of the services that many hardworking developers make available to us all.
Donations only keep the site running and finance its hosting/domain; they don't pay for help from other users of the site. If someone helps somebody else here, they don't get anything (financially) in return and are giving their time and expertise for free.
Regards,
Neil.
I donated because I like my HTC phone and I do not want to lose a technical resource like xda-developers. Even though technical information on HTC phones is hard to come by, there is more information about them on this site, than there is technical information about other phones on any single site. You'd be lucky to find this much information about any phone.
twiggy626: Calmly tell us your problem, be it "bloody damn activesync", keys and screen not locking the way you want, upgrade not working, or whatever's bugging you. State your problems clearly -- what is happening, and what you want to happen. You might not be getting an answer because your questions are not clear enough and no-one knows what to say.
Expanding on what leek said:
A good guide with pointers on how to ask questions in a way that is more likely to yeild results can be found here:

I'm afraid I'm not an expert on activesync. Others have more experience than I do.
When you say "after sync it drops the connection", do you mean after it has synced your files (contacts, etc.) it drops the connection, or do you simply mean after it opens a connection, it immediately drops it? Are there any clues on the screen of the PC or PDA, any messages? Does it say "synchronized" for any length of time? Can you "explore" your PDA from within ActiveSync?
Have you tried changing the options in ActiveSync? Have you removed unnecessary programs which could be conflicting with AS on your PC or PDA? Have you tried a different USB sync cable or cradle?
If you are trying to fix something wrong on your PDA by installing software on it, have you tried other methods of installing software, such as using a card reader and copying the .CAB files to a SD card, then installing the SD card in your PDA and running the .CAB from there? Or setting up a Bluetooth connection, by using a BT dongle on your PC? Wifi? There are many ways to install stuff on your PDA besides AS. Perhaps the solution to fixing AS, requires going around AS.
What is the history of your PDA? What have you installed on it, and what modifications to the ROM have you made? What steps did you take?
I don't know enough about AS to help -- I'm just trying to steer your questions so that you're more likely to get answers.
you are likely to get more of a response if you stop posting in unlocking and modifying and post with the forum that relates to your device. this way your questions will be more specific, and you will also find that those with more specific experience to your specific device can assist more efficiently that trying to cross advise.
for example, I cant really help on the magician, but have owned the himalaya, and currently the universal. so i only review the himalaya forum and no other.
also, i dont see much where you have provided assistance to others, it appears to be i want i want i want, try to give a lot and you might get back a little rather than vice versa.
it is true, we are all here to help, not serve.
You dont even point out your device, the version of your operating system on your pda or pc, nor what version of activesync. help yourself by helping us to help you.
to give assistance you have to learn, i cant learn from nothing
to give assistance you have to learn, i cant learn from nothing
I'm not sure if this is what you want. I am not an expert but I am just having a look at my device now:
I have an xda2 (Himalaya). With my device NOT connected to the PC:
1) Open Activesync
2) Click on Tools (at the bottom) and selcect Options
3) The next screen should mention the PC that you sync with. Click on the Options button.
4) On the next screen, tick the box for enabling PC sync and choose the USB option in the drop-down box.
5) Just underneath it states: When syncing remotely
6) Select the Maintain connection button
7) Click OK to close the screen
I suspect that this is more for bluetooth or network connections, but it is worth a try.
Good Luck
Have decided that the Universal is too flawed as a phone to be usable (it's impossible to use it with one hand, which is something I need to do daily), and have decided to step back to my BA (orange M2K).
Currently working hard at a new job so don't really have time to search the forum for all the new tweaks etc so would be very thankful if someone could answer the following questions:
What's the latest radio upgrade for the BA and are there some clear instructions on installing it?
Have there been any updates to WM2003SE I should know about? (in the last 6 months).
Will ActiveSync 4.1 work with WM2003SE or will I have to uninstall 4.1 and re-install 3.8??
As I've pointed out, I'm aware that asking for help like this isn't really the "XDA-way" and I'm fully expecting a plethora of "Use Search" posts (or a stony silence), but any useful replies would be greatly appreciated.
Try to answer
I will try to answer your questions
1.For detailed explaination look here
2.As far as I know there are no drastic changes in WM2003SE roms, more info you can find here and here
3.ActiveSync 4.X will work fine with WM2003SE (except if you want to sync over WIFI, if you do uninstall Activesync 4.X and install 3.8 )
More of the questions you may ask are covered here
Question for you
Why you stepping back, i want to buy Universal, and i really want to know is it worth buing, what do you dislike in it ?

Cheers for the help.
Iam having real problems getting on with the Universal, it makes a good palmtop/mini-laptop, and when I had time to use it, eg commuting to work by train, then it was great - internet over GPRS works well and the true VGA screen is very clear.
BUT I no longer have the time for all that, (I commute by motorcycle now - over 3 hours of riding a day) now the only use for the unit is diary and phone, and sadly it falls flat on it's face for this. The phone can't really be trusted for any call longer than 20 minutes (I've had some embarrasing re-calls recently) and it's impossible to use with one hand. If I'm heading out of the office and want to send a quick text to my wife, it's a two handed operation, even with VJPhoneTools. Also WM5 is not all it's cracked up to be.
I am going to try the BA, with PocketBreeze and small menu (very good programs for both WM5 and WM2003SE) and see how I get on. I would go back to my Nokia 8210, and just use the Universal as a PDA - but something in me rebels at the thought of carrying two devices when I could carry just one - so I'm going to re-try the BA.
Maybe when HTC bring out a unit with the BA's usability (lots of external buttons in sensible places, one handed usage when in PDA mode), and the Universal's convergence capability (proper keyboard, high resolution screen, full connectivity etc), I will be happy - but right now, the Universal can't hack it.
Thanks for the reply
