Has anyone any experience of these. I am about to start a course whereby I will be using lots of different computers and I would like to be able to make my MDAIII completely compatable.
Most of the time I will be able to use a pen drive between my PC and the new computers but if I have worked on the MDA in the meantime it would be brilliant to be able to transfer work immediately.
I have found some SD card readers in the form of Pen Drives which look like they would do the job. Presumably if I kept it with me and wanted to take files from computers (say work I had done in a school/college) or wanted to put stuff to the PC, I would just take out the SD card and pop it in the oen drive reader and hey presto.
I would really like some feedback from anyone using one or anyone that knows about them.

I've been using the Iogear mini-SD pen drive reader for about a month now with a SanDisk 2GB mni-SD that I use on my Wizard. It works just like a regular pen drive -- no problems so far.
They do make a SD-friendly version, too; here in the states, they run about $10, so figure on paying about 5 pounds.

i have a sandisk cruzer sd read which is kinda as small as a pendrive as you can them
i also have another noname one which does as good a job
why don't you use your mda as a mass store drive, there is a programme that tels the pc you mda is a mass store drive.
maybe because you'd need to carry a disc around with you and install that program to every computer you want to get data from

You have a MDAIII, it has a SD Slot, you are looking for a way to use the MDAIII as mass storage and are talking about a pen drive.
Well as you are carrying the MDAIII, why not put a SD card in it and use that in a USB slot as mass storage.

No...there's a utility that you install on the PPC.

Basically what it does is give you an icon to tap which switches the PPC between ActiveSync and Mass Storage. Tap the icon before connecting then it identifies itself to the host PC as you have chosen.

I already use an SD card but my aim is to be able to easily transfer data between my MDAIII and other people's computers - without the need for any leads or cables or installing any software onto their computers. I am not talking about pendrives containing memory - just ones that look like pen drives but are actually card readers with usb bits.
You are right in that one of those would do the job - but as the Pendrive readers cost less than £5.00 (sterling) and give me the flexibility to use any SD card that I own or may own in the future it is a more flexible option. I will keep an eye out for these if I see them though - I hadn't realised they existed. They are a bit expensive at the moment at $70.

I am probably being a bit dim but my reader /writer has arrived and I can only do half of what I wanted with it. Can you let me know how you use yours?
I think the best solution for you will be high capacity SD card ( 2 maybe 4 GB) + freeware soft to change your MDA II into "The Most Expensive Card Reader". You have to upgrade OS in MDAIII to WM5.0 too.So you need a sync&charge cable.

This won't do anymore for me than the oendrive reader I have just bought? I can now succesfully transfer files from my device to any PC I want with no software. What I can't yet do is save to teh SD via the card reader which I should be able to do (I thought)

My MicroSD card somehow write protection got turned on. Tried formatting it through PC and phone. Both ways didn't work. I don't have adapter so I've never used one.

write protection is mostly a physical latch/switch on the card itself
look around on the card and see if there is a slide that slides up or down depending on which position it says "lock"

which carrier? I'm sure you can find an adapter for a few bucks online or you could return it and tell your carrier that it doesn't function and ask for an exchange or something
Rogers. I'll just borrow adapter from a friend. If it doesn't solve it I'm gonna ask them to replace my card. I don't wanna deal with them at all... I had my X10 replaced 6 times in 8 months...once they've sent me broken replacement...

How do you know it's write protection? The card might either have been damaged so it cannot be written to or DRM protection kicked in (especially if you used it in Windows 7 phone).
In the former case I'd suggest to get a new card. In the latter, you may try to resuscitate it using a Symbian-based Nokia.
Everytime I try to make a photo phone says 'memory card write protected. Cannot edit files' and it was never used in any phone other than my x10.

I can only access files(read & copy) on computer. I have scoured the web but to no avail. Tried Windows,Ubuntu,Panasonic and HP formatter. Phone does not detect it either.
Possible culprit:
Sandisk Memory Zone(Android). Tried backing up my apps to Dropbox, but got interrupted due to network failure.
Any idea on how to format it?

But I suggest another culprit:
Link 2 SD, I tried to extend my internal storage using second partition in micro SD card by some methods, I think it broke it somehow.

Friend I recommended to buy new one and use unmount method to remove your sd card and safely removal methods

With the S2 and USB OTG it seems like no matter what you do you'll end up adding significant bulk to the device. My main use for USB OTG is to plug in external storage and use that as a connection between computer and device rather than actually connecting directly. Video in particular is nice to be able to do that way.
My thought is to simply skip the biggest part of the USB OTG cable - the USB end - and hook it up directly to a flash drive. One of these cables with the female full size USB end cut off and the wires connected directly to the USB pins of something like this without actually blocking the USB connector. I split open a similarly sized USB microSD reader I have, removed the metal from the connector etc and was left with just the card and main PCB. Worked perfectly on my Galaxy Tab through USB OTG without the added bulk, and there was enough room to solder wires to the back of the pins and still have it reach far enough into a USB port.

With or without the metal part of the USB connector still intact. The purpose would be to have a as small as possible thingamajig that could both plug into a computer to transfer content onto the thing and hook up directly to the S2. This way you eliminate all those steps in between with female and male usb connectors quadrupling the size of the package.
As long as you don't connect both ends at the same time there's no reason I know of not to just connect it all together like this.
The question I have is this...has anyone made something similar? Would be nice to see how well it works, any particular drives to use etc.
Decided to make a prototype for my Galaxy Tab, since I have spare cheap OTG adapters for it. Still waiting for some for the S2. The concept works 100%; works in 30 pin mode, USB mode on the Tab, and USB mode on a PC
So u just want a micro usb flash drive small enough to carry around just to transfer files from phone to pc, a solution to avoid any wires and "big" flash drives.
If this is the case, it just software solutions u need.
I use file expert from market.
It has a feature to share ur phone's files to its local network via wifi. Ur phone acts like an ftp file server so u can access ur phone files from ur pc.
If ur pc doesn't have any wireless network card, just buy a one, or use a wlan usb dongle. I'm sure its much cheaper than buying all those small memory cards and otg connectors and much less work.

No, because copying over wlan is slow, and I'm not copying anything from the drive to the phone, just read files directly off it. If you have a nice class 10 microSDHC card in an adapter you get at least 10MB/s write speed, and you can fill a card full without it taking up space on your actual device

I have one of those small sd card readers. very compact and might be what ur looking for
That card reader is not what im looking for as i have several, it is pictured in the second post as part of my prototype. It would be a part o the package, but not the entire deal. Need a smaller, angled otg piece than whats in that link. Which ill make, either as a one piece solution or with a female usb connector in between. Im just surprised that with hundreds of thousands of people spending so much energy on changing the color of a status bar, no one has bothered spending 15 minutes with a soldering iron to make an otg piece that doest stick straight out in the most awkward, fragile position there is

That's exactly the kind of system I was thinking, either with or without the female USB (alternative being soldering the flash drive directly, but probably not worth the hassle). Having the adapter flush down the bottom side of the S2 would make for such a much more handy package and help prevent connector damage
I am sure this has been answered before but for the life of me I have been searching for a couple of days and I cannot find the answer. Long story short, I have a rooted Kindle Fire that is running the newer kernel that supports USB OTG. I have confirmed that it is working via the app USB Host Controller and I have been able to plug in a USB mouse and use it. However, I am trying to use an IOGear stick SD/Micro SD card reader to quickly view photos taken with my cameras in the field. For whatever reason, USB Host Controller sees the IOGear but as a USB device but the SD cards never show up as mass storage. I have also tried Stickmount but it never sees anything to mount.
What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

You're missing an external power source. Your SD card won't mount without one, either a wired hub plugged into an outlet, or a Y cable with battery charger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh...ature=youtu.be

Thanks for both of the replies. I did not realize that the reader needed power. Are you saying that the Targus would work without a power source? Ideally I want to keep this as simple as possible. As I mentioned, it is for checking photos while out in the field hiking and such.
Also, doing a quick search I see a lot of Targus products. Is there a specific one?

Fun fact: SD Cards run at 3.3 volts, just like what the Kindle puts out the USB.
That isn't the problem though, the issue is that some USB devices conform to the USB standards more than others, like voltages.
Some devices will run just fine at 3.3 volts, like all 3 of my USB flash drives are fine, my keyboard, my mouse, and at least one of my bluetooth adapters... But my camera doesn't like it, my XBOX controller doesn't, none of my phones do, etc.
A powered USB hub fixes all that though, since it doesn't rely on host power at all.

I will be traveling extensively over the next several months and bought the tablet to use as somewhat of a laptop substitute. I wanted to know if anyone could recommend specific applications/accessories specifically for this tablet related to travel. I also wanted to max out the internal storage, but it looks like 64GB microSD cards are the highest available on the market. As far as accessories, I am looking for a very durable case (like Otterbox), and SD card reader for my digital camera, and a bluetooth keyboard. Thank you for any and all suggestions.

Depending on how much you like the writing with the stylus or the onscreen keyboard, you may want to pick up a bluetooth keyboard. Given that (to the best of my knowledge) there aren't any otterbox-ish cases yet available for this tablet, you could use the keyboard solution as a compromise by buying one of the cases with a built-in keyboard that helps to protect the device more than the average flip cover or sleeve. Don't know what kind of camera you have, but if it can take an Eye-Fi SD card, that may be a better solution for you while traveling. I have the Eye-Fi Pro X2 model, which although I really like it and it works well, it can be a lot more difficult to configure. The Eye-Fi Mobi cards are really easy to configure and (again depending on what camera you own) works really well with this tablet. FYI, you don't have to always have the Eye-Fi card actively transferring pics to the tablet...all you have to do is login to the app whenever you want to transfer pics or logout when you don't. Since the MicroSD slot is easily accessible, you want to get more than just one.

I fly a lot so needed a hard travel case for when its in my bag or suitcase, since I couldnt find any for our tablet I bought one for the Tab 3 10.1, The dimensions of our Note and the Tab are pretty much the same so hopefully it should fit alright, I should have it by the end of this week and will let you know if its any good.

I can confirm this works well fort me, the tablet's USB port doesn't give out enough power to drive a portable hard drive on its own, but it's fine for the USB memory sticks that I've tried and it also works well with my cheapy card reader. If you're going to use a card formatted with NTFS then I recommend installing 'Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+' (free from Market), this works for my NTFS formatted USB sticks. The OTG adapter can also be used for attaching a standard USB keyboard which will be far more reliable than Bluetooth as it currently stands.
OTG adapters can be picked-up from the usual sources for a couple of £/$s, I suggest you get one with a right-angled connector to make life a little easier.
you should also get the Samsung spare battery pack. It's very compact and works very well.
I just picked up a small backpack from Walmart. It has a sleeve for a tablet inside, and 2 pouches for extra stuff on the outside (charger, flash drives, ect) so far, it is working good for me. The brand is Solo, and it cost me $20.

i disagree, because i can read my 1tb ntfs external hdd with my galaxy note 8.0 very well with the USB OTG cable..
i'm just waitng to do the same with galaxy note 10.1 2014...

How can you can disagree with something you've not tried? It's better to give no advice than bad advice.
NTFS cannot be read natively by most Android devices including the Note 10.1, you will need a suitable mounter app or a modified kernel.

i was not talking about ntfs format but the power to make the external hdd works; i know that NTFS is not supported natively...
i have custom kernel in the galaxy note 8.0 with ntfs mounter app... even the s3 can support ntfs with custom kernel...
and maybe this tablet too... we just need to wait...
Anyone have any first hand recommendations for a set up to transfer from the P6P directly to a micro SD? It's not something I've ever needed before so I'm a total babe in the woods regarding what would be best for this.
I plan on trying to use the phone to record a lot of footage away from any PC and would like to dump it to SD cards as I go to have a backup copy. I have a lot of 128gb microSD cards I use in my GoPros and drone.
Strong preference on "it just works" and is durable and not prone to user issues. It'll be attached to the phone and bouncing around in a running vest.
I'll be doing this during ultra marathons and will have no access to a PC for up to 30 hours (and some day up to 112 hours I hope as I want to try the Tahoe 200 or Big Foot 240) at a time. And it would help that it's braindead simple to do as toward the end of a race my mental acuity is a "tiny" bit less than it is sitting at my desk at home.
Anyway, my appreciation in advance for your time and guidance.
Just a thought here, and I'm not even sure it would work. But could you use your USB C to USB adapter and simply add maybe a flash drive? I'm not sure if you could map it to record directly to it though, but maybe you could transfer all your recordings?
I got a USB-C multi-port dongle for free off of Amazon years ago, reimbursed in exchange for an honest review. Has 2x USB-A 3.x, one full-size HDMI, and full-size and Micro SD slots. The particular one I got isn't on Amazon any longer. This kind of thing is similar although has even much more ports than mine. I used mine yesterday to transfer 200 GB+ of music and other files to the 6 Pro's internal storage.
My MicroSD card from my previous phone was in ExFAT format, so I had to buy Paragon's file system app from the Play Store in order to be able to read it on a Pixel (Google would have to pay Microsoft a royalty to add ExFAT support). Then I used the file manager of my choice, X-plore File Manager.

I use a .5tb to do "dirty" backups of my onboard SD card. Primary backup is always hdds.
Only issue is if it takes a hard hit it may take out the port...

Just wanted to say that I ended up getting the below item. It's made of metal which isn't obvious from the images on amazon and has a surprising amount of heft to it given it's size. Feels solid with no wiggle to the usb c male plug on it. Comes with one of those thin string key chain connectors as well which didn't come apart when I tugged the crap out of it.
Plugged it into my Pixel 2XL and it 'just worked' which honestly surprised me, having never needed something like this I was expecting it to be a chore to set up. I was easily able to copy files, media specifically, directly to my microsD cards without any problems.
The one gripe I have is the SD card doesn't 'lock' in. It's not at any danger of falling out but it does not have that press in *click*, press again *click* to pop it out that my GP's and drone has. It sticks out of the device about 3/16" of an inch to give you enough room to pull it back out. Just out of paranoia I would likely put the phone in a ziplock bag during a run when it's in my vest just to make sure if it somehow did get knocked out I wouldn't have to dig in the bottom of the vest trying to find it.

Really great to use when on vacation and downloading GoPro video to the phone, quicker than going wireless.
In 2014 I bought a Corsair 64 GB Flash Voyager OTG flash drive with Micro USB connector on one end (with a cap on it, which came with something to tie it to the main body), and a USB-A 3.0 connector on the other end. Looks like below. If I were going to buy a modern one I'd probably prefer one with a built-in cap again.
Edit 1: Actually, here's one with a cap and USB-A on the other end (second image), although I'd be torn which end to keep the cap on.
Edit 2: And now I see one with a cap for each end (third image).

Nice, that's a first world problem I have, I have both PC and Mac so I'm always having to throw adapter's on things to move stuff between them. A double ended one would be really useful that works with both.
