Dear All,
I was thinking of buying a 4GB SD card for my Xda Exec but i'm not quite sure if it supports it. Could someone please enlighten me on this, thanks alot.
regards,
Ravi
really interested to know your experience on this, or anyone else, as I am also looking.
This seems pretty cheap:
http://www.offtek.co.uk/item_detail.php?id=406125
Transcend do a compatability list, but doesn't have exec:
http://www.transcendusa.com/Support/FAQ/index.asp?axn=Detail&FAQNo=400
This is £109. Seen any cheaper for 4gb ?
interesting info:
Apparently, the 4gb sd card doesn't work on the treo650 as 4gb sd cards are in fat32 format and treo only accepts cards in fat format and not fat32 format.
Does exec recognise fat32 sd cards ?
Saw one on e-bay a couple of days ago for about £85 including shipping. I believe it was 150X speed (22Mbps). Will see if i can locate it, if you are interested.
cheers,
Ravi
Hey Everyone,
bought a couple of days ago a 4Gb SD card on ebay for £85.00.
Got it yearsterday put it in the Xda Executive works with no problem.
I formated it with Pocket Mechanic in FAT 32.
Copied all my stuff from my only 2GB MMC to the 4GB SD card a pop it in the XDA Executive and up to now I've had no problems.
Works Great.
The make of the card is:
My Flash
150X Turbo

Gigino, can the camera save to the card? That appears to be where most people have had problems
Hey Coldpenquin,
I tried what you have said to save a camera photo to the Storage card.
You are right they is a problem I get a error message saying:
Camera
Unable to capture.
Not enough memory.
36009:110:0
So it looks like that the 4Gb card does not work 100% on the Xda Exec.
Any another problem that I should be aware of.
Hope this is helpfull.
Any another person what me to try something please let me known.

the only card I know that does 150x is the transcend. wonder if this is the same OEM as the mycard ?????
Does camera save work ok on the 2gb ?
If you have an o2 xda exec it might worth a support email or call to o2. It sounds like a simple issue to fix, just some check in the camera software that is failing probably being due to using 32 bit integer, as this is 2gb address. 33bit is 4gb
just found out, myflash is actually adata.
adata is a good memory company, I have 2gb ddr2 in my pc from adata and np. They also make SD cards from samsung.
I never use the camera in any event. Cards the seem to be available in the uk:
Transcend (offtek)
Pretec
Myflash-adata (ebay)
Samsung-adata (samsung)
Ora (expansys)

I've had the same problem 5 months ago when I bought the 4GB Transcend. That is why I returned mine. The only solution is to store more than 2MB of whatever you want on the 4GB SD Card before the camera application will even recognize it. The camera application only supports up to 2GB Cards from my experience.
hey cktlcmd, r u saying that if more then 2m are stored in the photo sub-folder then the camera works as normal ?
+ personal qu. aren't you a bit pissed that you can't use umts in new jersey ?
I think that he means 2GB.
Basically, if you try and store a number greater that 2GB (i.e., 33bit), in a 32bit integer, the number will be returned as negative when read back as a 32bit integer. The camera program must be converting the amount of free space to a 32bit integer, which is not a correct assumption to make, but this is microsoft.
I was wondering whether the flash could be partitioned to be two 2GB partitions and whether this would fix the problem. But, if the programmers were so lazy not to check the bounds on variable or that they are the correct types, then it would probably not be possible to see the second partition

Coldpenguin is right.
Unfortunately, we have to accept our service providers' limitations.
Using 4Gb card for already few months and works great.
it is a 150X.
Of course, you can't use it to save pictures, but this is a pure software problem.
Patrick.
off topic, sry: hey patrick is there a umts network in Isr ?

there is one, it's the Orange network.
So, can I confirm from you guys? Since I'm about to buy a 4GB SD Card, too.
1. Both Transend and Adata 4GB will work on Universal.
2. Only camera application cannot store directly to the SD Card, but if we have the SD Card filled up with more than 2 GB amount of data, then the camera can store files on it? Has anyone try it before, or its just an assumption?
Thanks in advance.
I can personally speak to the 4gb Transcend - works exactly as you described in #2. fill with at least 2gb and camera saving to card works fine.
Hey guys (&girls?)
DId anyone of you discovered the same problem as I did in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=269843#269843
I just tried the camera to save to the 4GB SD Card (Transcend x150) and had no problems with the two pictures I took.
Saved them directly to the Card in folder

Someone posted that the newest QTEK ROM fixes this 4GB Camera problem. I have this ROM installed in my device but I don't have a 4GB card to test on.
Just thought some of you guys would like to know.

Hi,
I was reading a thread on the 4GB SD Cards and am still unsure if the 4GB Transcend 150x SD Card works on the O2 Exec/Universal/Dopod 900? I would like to confirm with someone who has used this SD card in their Exec/Universal.
According to the Transcend Tech Support, they replied... "First of all, thank you for considering Transcend product. O2 series support SD memory up to 2GB.(Please refer to the website for compatibility list)
http://www.transcendusa.com/Support/Search/index.asp .f you have any other question, please feel free to let us know"
I've looked at their site and the stated max size supported is 2GB... This is confusing as other people have mentioned it kindof working..
Would love to know before I jump out and buy it!
Cheers!

I bought this card and used for about 2 weeks in my jasjar without any problems. I'm now using/testing in my dopod 818 pro /jamin and again no problems thus far. The size is awesome.
Mike
I've used that card in my XDA Exec for a month or so and had no problems whatsoever. The only catch is that the photo camera app won't save photos and videos to it, giving you an error when you try.
Now I've moved it to my Axim. I'm using a 1GB card on my Exec and the photos can be saved to the memory card without problems.
It is so cool,Without any problem.......Work very well with my Qtek9000~~~~
Yes, it works, but on my device, the camera application refuse to store my pictures and movies to it. So in the end, I returned mine and bought a 2GB SD Card which works quite well.

Thanks all for the replies... Just wondering if what everyone said about putting 2GB of stuff on the 4GB card, then leaving less than 2GB free, the the camera app will work is true or not?
Not sure if I should take the risk or should I just get a 2GB card instead... :?

It is OK to take the risk, as long as you research if you can return it and get a refund if all does not go well.

Have you test saving pictures and movies on to this TOP RAM 4GB SD card?? pictures taken from camera application I mean..
If you have done that and no problems arise, then it's the SD card brand issue. which means Transcends SD card don't work as well as Topram don HTC Universal

Yes I just set Camera to save to Storage Card, took a couple of 2MB pictures - saved as 208K, and a short Video.
They were saved in \Storage Card\my documents\My Pictures and in \Storage Card\my documents\My Videos respectively.
Uploaded them to PC via Active$tink, and viewed them. No Problems.
So the TOPRAM 4GB 150x SD Card is OK on my iMate Jasjar.
Any other tests required?
P.S. I bought this on ebay with a free bundled USB 2.0 SD Card Reader that also works with this 4GB SD Card...

About 400MB Free Space at the time. Do you think that has a bearing?

Yes that sound like it has a bearing... According to the discussion on http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37544&highlight=4gb+sd. If you have more than 2GB of free space on your SD Card, then the camera app will not work. I think that you will have the same problem with your 4GB SD Card as others brands 4GB SD Card.
I don't know if this has been said yet, but I think I might know what's causing the trouble.
2GB = 2.048MB = 2.097.152 KB = 2.147.483.648 Bytes
A DWORD (32-bit number, used in loads of windows apps) can handle up to
2^32 = 4.294.967.296, which SHOULD be enough
However, if the number is treated as signed (means it can be positive and negative), one of the bits is used to keep track of the sign, and thus the maximum becomes:
2^31 = 2.147.483.648
If you go over that, the number will be negative.
What I think that's happening is that the camera app calls something to get the free space, gets a DWORD, treats it signed, and thus if you have more than 2GB free, it thinks it's a negative number and will thus not allow you to shoot more pictures
The fix is simple: Get more than 4GB and the sign will probably change to positive again Downside, once have less than 4GB but more than 2GB free it'll show the same symptons
Just kidding
Anyway, as I see it, there might be two fixes:
- An app that keeps a file on your card, and keeps it at a size so that you have just under 2GB free.
- A patch for the camera to either fix the signed-ness, or hook into the API and return 1.99GB if the free size exceeds that.
Unfortunately, I don't have a 4GB Card *yet*, so I can't look into it
I'll see if I can somehow fake a filesystem with more than 2GB free, else you'll have to look at vijay55 or someone else nicely
I might buy a 4GB card, but then again, I might decide not to because of these compatibility issues :/

Might want to read my post just one before yours
I highly doubt it's a problem with Transcend as other apps and the OS itself works perfectly with it, I think it's the fact that it crosses the 2GB boundary of free space and thus the Camera ****s up
How about partioning the SD? If you partioned it to half the size of the the 4GB you would have 2 2GB parts minus the space you always loose on SD cards...
Hmm I saw that was also mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=214020#214020
Hi All,
Just to let you know. I bought the Transcend 4GB 150x SD Card today for my O2 Exec phone. As expected everything works except the camera app if you store photo/videos to storage card when you have more than 2GB of data free. I have therefore put over 2GB of files on the card leaving only 1.8GB free at the moment and heh presto the camera app works. (as everyone has been saying!).
Well I'm chuffed I have a working 4GB SD Card now!
Only issue is the SD Card access seems to be slow. This seems to be the case for any SD Card I use in my O2 Exec (512MB, 1GB 60x, 4GB 150x). Anyway of speeding things up? Registry hack??? Pocket Mechanic states that it's only 0.16mb/s!
Also another issue was the card is not recognised by my laptops built-in SD Card reader! Luckily I have a external one which worked ok! Anyone know how to solve my SD Card Reader issue? I've emailed Benq tech support hoping they have a new driver or something like that. But no reply yet.
RE
Hi makuk,
Which Pocket Mechanic version are you using on your EXEC? Is it Wm5 compatible?
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of upgrading my 512mb SD card to 2gb, but I'm not certain that the phone (Qtek 9090) will be able to work with such a large card.
Does anyone here have a 2gb card working? Any brands/models that are known to work or fail?
Thanks in advance for your help.
2gb SDCard...
Hi!
I'm currently using a 2gb SanDisk SD Card, everything works great. Oddly enough, I cannot find a card reader to connect to my PC that can read them!?!? I'm still using 2003SE and transfer movies and MP3's to the phone by using the painful multi-hour process of Exploring via ActiveSync. Uggh! This is fixed in ActiveSync 4.1 but ONLY if you are running WM5... Just having 2003SE and 4.1 will still be totally laggy for file copy.
Enjoy!

Works a treat!!

Hi! Do you have a brand name or model number of the card reader you mentioned so I can search for it on the Internet? So far I've purchased 2 different readers and neither can speak "2gb" The one I can use for 1gb cards but not 2gb cards is Belkin F5U248 rev.2, so I know that one wont work!
Thanks in advance!
Does anyone know what speed the BA supports for its SD cards?
The transfer speed is limited by the SD card type
The transfer speed should be contained within the card specification sheet
As I understand it, the maximum transfer speed is 22.5MB per second
This is for a 133X SD card, so compare accordingly
thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure that there wasnt a limit on the SDIO bus on the BA.
I'm planning to buy a 2gb Sandisk, but i'm not too sure whether the ultra version will work, as the compatibility list on their website only shows the standard. So i might just get the standard one to be on the safe side.
I currently use 4Gb SD card! I had only hard time finding flash card reader for my PC, which can read such a big card
I believe PPC devices has no problem with big SD cards. At least my Mio 168 PPC with GPS (PPC 2003) understand 4G card too.
But I do not believe flash manufacturers X rating. I NEVER seen real speed more than 3 Mb/s on any type of device. My card have rating x133 (22.5Mb/s). And I have no idea on what device and how did they measure that speed?
From the 2g->4gb reports it sounds like sd card size is not so much an issue for the BA, more for the SD->USB adaptor.
I have the same awful USB activesync file transfer rates reported on this thread, despite running WM5, so it sounds like my current adaptor might need upgrading.
Anyway, thanks for helping out, and I now have a 2gb 133x SD on order for next week ;-)
The typical transfer rate is 2MBps
Quotes like 133X and 150X are NOT a multiple of this but the coefficient comparison between the read and write speed
As an example for a 2MB SD card
Uploading 2MB data takes 1 second
Reading data, for that same setup, takes 1 second
For the 133X the write speed is the same, but the read time is 0.4 seconds and for the 150X card it is 0.33 seconds
This also assumes the SD interface meets SDIO v1.01
If not then the 133X and 150X cards take the same time to read as the standard card
2gb Card Reader
Hi there ottGalaen,
My card reader is made by PC Line, I think it's PC World's own brand, the Model number on the back is PCL-CR400.
Here's a link to it...

If that doesn't work just go to www.pcworld.co.uk and search for PCL-CR400
I hope this helps

Yo, what type of SD card that you using now (Sandisk Ultra II) ?
Just so you guys know my 4GB SD card is a Transcend 150x.
From PRETEC, here:-

I found one on eBay for £96.00 + £4.00 p&p.
150X 8GB OEM SAMSUNG SECURE DIGITAL SD CARD 8 GB G NEW
Looks good.
Gonna test that on Universalinux too?
wonder if it will work in a prophet (JAMin)
RE
If your PDA do not have a SDHC slot then PRETEC card is not backward compatible
Quote
"SDHC cards are recognized by new SDHC host devices differently than standard SD cards and are not backward compatible with legacy SD format host devices. "
Bad luck!!
What IS SDHC compatible?
I was gonna ask that one, so i will ask it anyway!
What is SDHC?
Never mind, i found this information:
http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/pdf/retail/SDHC1.pdf#search="sdhc compatible"
But now we need to know whether our Universal is SDHC compatible or not. Has anyone managed to find out if these new cards work with our PDA's?
Maximum capacity for this device: May support up to 2GB
But we know that's already true. So...
This quote is right from the article linked to by the first post here...
The maximum capacity of SD card is 2GB under SD 1.1 of Secure Digital Alliance (SDA) specification; however, by using file format of FAT32, many SD 1.1 host devices can use a 4GB SD card. SD 1.0/1.1 uses traditional "Byte Addressing" scheme which limits the maximum capacity to 4GB while SD 2.0 adopts "Sector Addressing" scheme which can reach the maximum capacity of 2TB (2048GB).

In other words, they 'cheat' to get the Universal and other SD 1.1 devices to see 4G, but that won't work with the 8G cards.
Brett
Would the Universal still not work with an 8GB SD card if that card was partitioned into 2x 4GB's? It certainly would be helpful if someone could try this? You just never know!
re
I guess no one will know for sure until someone tries it. BTW how do you partition a SD card anyways? Do you really think that could work?
hello
if SD 2.0 is the later version then would not all new 4 GB SD cards support "sector addressing" which would limit the ma. capacity to 2 GB
I have a 4gb that works in uni
I keep reading that people aren't able to use anything above a 2gb SD but I have been using a 4gb that I purchased on eBay for pver 6 months now. I used in with the original Jasjar ROM and also with JWrite's, Indra, and currently Helmi's. (not with the WM6's yet though)
It is interesting to note however that it won't work in any of my desktop or laptop systems without the included dongle. Not even the built in SD slot in my TC1100 tablet.
It says it's made by a company called "TopRam" if that helps anyone.
I also purchased an 8gb that SUPPOSEDLY supports SD 1.1 and 2.0 according to the documentation. It took a great deal of hunting to find one that didn't say it was HC and I'm still skeptical as to whether or not it will actually work, but as soon as it comes in and I have a chance to try it I will post the results here if anyone is interested.
I know there are one or two people here who make claims of such things, but if there are any doubters I will take some screenshots of the storage card memory screen if I need to.
SDHC uses a different software for the controller. The hardware is exactly the same. The point I'm trying to make, is that the SD people went to very radical lengths to ensure that there is no compatibility betweens SD and SDHC. They also have two different kinds of memory addressing. Bottom line, you can't use SDHC. Your device must say SDHC, and AFAIK, no PDA is SDHC compatible. With all of that said, I'm a Scoter owner, and we have valid reports of being able to access SDHC cards from a PC, through my device. It may be possible to create drivers for the SD controller, or create some kind of emulator, but that is a long way off. I've seen similar threads about those asking about 4 GB and 8 GB. Unfortunetly most don't understand the difference between SD and SDHC. SD is capable of 4 GB. SDHC starts at 2 GB and has potential in the terrabyte range. In addition, many of the real cheap 4 GB SD cards don't strictly adhere to SD standards, and may work on some reader designs, and not on others. A perfect example is that I bought a 4 GB SD card, that only works on one card reader, but not my PC reader or PDA.
Regards,
Jason
SDHC Patch
I just read on a forum for Palm Treo that they have a working patch for the Treo which forms compatibility of SDHC on the Treo.
Now perhaps we can take a lesson from them and see what changes where needed to make it work. Besides, you can't tell me that there are more people working of patches for the PalmOS than WM.
well , the sdhc 8gb does not work on my xda exec-universal. so I just bought a 4gbcard "MyMemory 4GB 133X SD" from ebay that is stated as being compatible 21.94 pounds.
I'll just use my sdhc 8gb as an expensive mem stick in my sweex sdhc reader .
got it
So I received my 8gb (supposedly NON SDHC) and as expected, it won't read in my Jasjar. I am going to try and reformat it into 2 or 4gb partitions to see if that will work but I am going guess and say no. It is already in fat32 but it doesn't recognize the card at all in the PDA. Just to make sure it was in fact a full 8gb (7.6gb actually) I copied a handfull of movies (7gb) to it and then ran them on another laptop and it is in fact a good card.
I can't repartition it in XP since it sees it as a removable disk, so as soon as I get my Linux laptop back up and running, I will repartition it there and see what happens. I don't expect much though.

Could you, please, try AKU 3.5 ROM (Helmi 1.3.1 or Ivan B2)?
Because this ROM comes from device which support SDHC.
There were reports also, that Triniti with last Dopod ROM (AKU 3.5)
support Mini SDHC 4GB (maximum for mini SD now).
BTW tell us which ROM you are tryinng.
why not
If someone will send me the link to the rom files, I'll be glad to. I just don't have a lot of time right now to search the ftp site.
Two questions about Helmi's 1.3.1, first, will it support my bluetooth stereo headset like the pdaviet 207 I'm using now does? and second, I don't suppose any of these new roms has the new timechange fix already applied do they? I just don't want to keep reflashing my Jasjar and still having to apply all the reg fixes etc to correct for the new timezone/dst changes.
Guess nobody was in a hurry for me to test using the other ROMs as I have had no PM's with info as to where I can find the ROMS now that they are no longer on the ftp server here.
I find my copy of Helmi's aku3.5 1.3 and tried it with the 8gb (non-sdhc) card with no luck. I assumed as much. Not quite sure where you heard that it had SDHC support but I guess it doesn't.
I had the PDAVIET 2.0.0.0.7 or whatever the latest incarnation was and that didn't work either. I now have Helmi's WM6 1.1 that I put on last night and that one also doesn't work.
I'm sure we have some developers out there who know palm and ppc hardware who can take a look at the "fix" that was created for the Treo which allows SDHC use. I can "open" the prc file but I don't know enough about what I'm looking at to be helpful.
Not sure why this fix is so slow coming. Perhaps not enough people see the need for 8gb cards. I have a 4gb but I have to continue taking off stuff in order to put anything else on because it's always full.

trying to buy either one of them.. but I am wondering,
-Are they both compatible? and..
-Which would be a better choice?
Your replies much appreciated.
Best regards,
J.

Can you write your experience? have you use a 4GB SD card on Blu Angel?
4gb card
i have a topram 4gb card 150x and all is working ok on my xda 2s with tomtom 6 and mp3s, movies
4GB
I bought a D-Tec 120x 4GB SD Card, had a bit of doubt as I have never heard of D-Tec.
However, I received it today, and so far it works fine! It recognises as 4GB.
To clarify this a bit more for people -
There are two types of SD cards right now:
SD (1.1)
SDHC (2.0 - HC stands for high capacity). A good primer on the changes can be found here: http://www.sandisk.com/sdhc/SDHC.pdf
Basically, what you need to know - any card that is regular 1.1 (8mb -4GB) will work in the BA. Any card that is 2.0/SDHC (4gb -32gb) will NOT work, as 2.0 is NOT backwards compatible.
The problem here, as you may notice, is that some 4GB cards are teh 1.0 version, and some are the 2.0. If you are not careful, you may buy the wrong card, and end up with something you can't use.
Now, it is possible that some SD devices can only address values smaller than 4.0GB. But, assuming the device is FULLY 1.1 compliant, a 4.0 1.1 card should work just great.
Here is an example of the differences -
This is a 1.1 card:

This is a 2.0 card:

Hello! I called the customer service of O2 today. It says that a storage-card (MicroSD) for the XDA Orbit cannot bei bigger than 512 MB. I cannot believe that but is this correct? Does anybody know the maximum size for a storage card?
Not true - my Orbit runs fine with a 1Gb card, as does my MDAC3.
I am happily running a 2Gb card in my Orbit
Where's the limit?
What about 2GB or 4GB? Will they work with the XDA Orbit?

Hi,
I'm not as experienced as some others on this forum... I'm sure they'll correct my info
I spent a day or so seraching for info before I got my card, and FWI here are my notes:
2GB fine.
4Gb may be problematic.
Thickness of SD card may be a problem. The latch/Phone card has to be correctly clicked into place around the card.
Some makes of card seem better. Sandisk HIGH SPEED seem to be good.
I've got a 2Gb version and it's ok, but read others experiences in the forums.
I got both Lexar and CNex tools to check formatting could be done with full control and also to provide recovery possibility.
Hope that may help.
damned micro sd card
please can someone help?
i have a 1gb sandisk micro card which is being reported by my orbit as 512mb(minus FAT). i put it into my computer and it is clearly 1gb. i have tried putting more onto the card via the orbit, and it says "no more space", but it is fine via the pc. what's going on?!?
thanks in advance,
Tom
Maybe you should try WM5Storage and format SD card on PC. There is detailed instruction how to do it on forum.
afaik there are no 4gb micro sd cards. 2gb is max for them atm
I sell 2gb micro sd for the orbit on a daily basis and had no problems with them, I even use one myself.

not true i have one and its working!
Mobile 2007 .... what make and how I was under the impression 4GB were not compatible?
I'm currently using a 2GB Sandisk microSD card and it is perfectly working.
Regarding 4GB microSD cards, they are called microSDHC (High Capacity) and as far as I know, the Artemis is not able to read from of write to them.
That's what I thought but it appears mobile2007 has got it to work?
I've got a 1gig with all sorts on it. I think 2gig is the biggest at the moment.
