I also had a similar problem recently. Had a couple of installs that went bad, so I restored a backup. All my software was fine, but SMS wasn't restored. Further more, wouldn't let me create a new account for text messages. I could create other mail accounts, but not for text messages. It was explained to me that this is a defect and the way around it is when you do a backup, backup everything EXCEPT your e-mail in one file, then create a second backup with ONLY your e-mail/messages in another file.
I used this process with Sprite Backup 3 and it's been working fine. First I restore the larger backup with all the software. Then I restore the e-mail only backup and everything comes back normally. Hope this helps!
My problem is that, this happened when i haven't done any restore. I hardreset the device, install some programs, and setup POP3 then it got stuck at step 4
So what is the real problem, it must not due to error regarding restoration.
The O2 XDA IIi seem to got so many defects, very disappointed with that kind of device

Total data backup

Hi all,
I have flashed my Universal several times so far, and every time I did so, I have lost some of my data or had problems with backing them up and restoring them again. What I lost were, for example, all the calendar events and tasks, because AS recognized my phone as a new one and didn't let me restore backup from the "old" one. I managed to successfully backup my SMSes, but when I restored them, each of them was restored twice, and as I never delete messages I send and receive, deleting all the duplicates one by one would take about two eternities. Oh and of course I had to reinstall all my apps and games and lost all the topscores I spent ages making.
Anyway, what I want to say is that while backing up all the data could make problems to an ordinary user, I'm sure that there are some gurus that handle this with no problems, so..could any of them possibly write a tutorial on backing up all the data from important contacts to not-so-importnant-but-still-desired game scores? I know that what I'm asking for is pretty comprehensive and would take some time, but I'm sure that many users would benefit from such article. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this and decides to reply or help

As a TOTALLY new user this month - I was surprised to find that I can't back up my total configuration to SD card (like I could with my old HP IPAQ)
Does this mean I have to re-install applications from a PC and re-sync from a PC each time the XDA EXEC 'hard resets' ?? (quite often at the moment)
Or has someone got a 'Back up to SD' tool that can restore after a 'Hard reset' ??
OK - I Just found SPB and Sprite - which one for a Novice ??
On a related subject , how can I transfer calendar and contacts from my IPAQ ?

Hi and welcome I use Sprite to backup, it has upgrade mode which allows you to restore after a ROM update, saving me countless hours installing apps and re-configuring my device. SBP only restores to the same ROM
lol remind me to use sprite backup after iv re installed and downloaded al my apps after updating to windows 6 doh

Well so I downloaded some kind of trial version of Sprite backup for WM5 to try it out, but when I tried installing it, at about 30% of the installation process, it told me that "the app is not intended for this type of device" and the installation enden unsuccessfuly. Could someone please post a working CAB file for Sprite backup for WM5 trial? Thanx a lot, Longlife

Um theres no trial version.. What kind of device to you have? You most likely got the PPC version when ur device is actually an SP (smartphone) or vice versa
Please USE the forum search engine and READ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=278037 - it answers ALL your questions.

I have no idea what I downloaded then I tried to backtrack the site I got it from so I could read the decription again, but I didn't find it. Anyway, it was saying that it's for WM5 and as I have HTC Universal running WM5, I thought that is should work. Now, I got SKTools though, which are free and seem pretty cool (I just hope I will be able to restore the backup I made, once i need it )
Can I just point out something, if you use a backup utility, you should only restore that backup to the same ROM build you backed up from.
Otherwise, nearly all of the optimisations in the registry, and included application shortcuts will be lost if you decide to flash a new ROM and restore your backup.
You will be wasting your time reflashing if this is what you're doing.

Umm, sorry if this question is stupid, but what should I use to backup my data when flashing a new ROM then? The idea of getting a new ROM BUT losing all my data doesn't sound very good to me. Thanks,

yes it's rooted,i have root explorer and accessed that place allready ... that database had removed already ... i start with label "Factory reset/FullWipe"
If there's nothing there then there's nothing left, do you not have any old nandroids? Titanium backups? Anything?
If you do then restore it and sync your contacts to Google

I think that you lost it. Sorry
Have you tried Amacsoft Android SMS + Contacts Recovery, I think it would help, we can use it to recover lost contacts and messages easily with it, try it yourself!
That's why gmail is entered in your phone for market etc..In future sync your contacts with gmail!

I tried this, but it doesn't connect neither to my HOX, nor to my Nexus 7 (2013).
Both devices have USB debugging on. HOX runs 4.4.4, and Nexus 5.0.2.
I think you may need a third-party software and you shouldn't use your phone after the factory reset, because new data will overwrite your previous data. My friend recommends is Mobiledic Android Phone Recovery. You can have a try . It can recover data for accidental deletion, factory reset or whatever reasons. Here is also an article may help you recover your data after factory reset.

If this happens, the phone.com in this case is corrupted by some event. Restoring gives you the original settings of system apps.

Yes you are right: it came from a program to restore you ringtones and apparently the program is messing the contacts database.

I had it again after having used this program. I did a wipe of my contacts database and my phone works again.

More details? Rooted, or installed any custom mods or etc? Try factory reset, if else not working then you will have to flash your firmware again.

Thanks for the response. I'm a novice - how do I find out if the phone is Rooted? How do I do a factory reset? Or, where can I find information on these issues?

Alright, if like that means you haven't play anything on your phone yet, To resolve that, go to Settings > Backup and reset > factory reset your device.
Warning all apps will be lose your apps and all will be reset to default. (*just like you have newly bought your phone)
You can backup your SMS messages using SMS Backup & Restore app. Search for it in Playstore, If you want to backup your contacts, just export your contacts to SD card.

Or, you can try remove all your account and add them again then disable the Sync, See if it helps, if not, try reset your phone. If you are very unlucky even after reset the problem still presist, you should sent to Samsung Service Centre, maybe is hardware related issue.
