Cases - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

http://www.doml.co.uk/productdec.asp?pid=2136&model=jas_jar&modeln=i-Mate JASJAR
Looks to be the best Universal case, though having read the issues of the case not allowing the phone to close properly, was just wondering if anyone's got good / bad experiences of this one. Also, any other suggestions as I believe I really do need one for this phone - particularly one with a belt clip or some kind.
Comments appreciated.

May be look for Piel Frama case
I haven't yet bought but I think about more to a Piel Frama case. It is quite similar but with some details such as the way keyboard is maintained which seems better.
You can look in this blog (sorry it is in french). The guy seems happy of it?
 http://ouziel.blogs.com/pierre/2005/11/etui_piel_frama.html

My French is a little rusty, but looking at the pictures it would appear that for his case as well, the lid is not allowed to close properly. This could, in theory, start to create problems later on for the hinge mechanism.
Any others thoughts?
Ant

Sorry, I've just realised I put this in the Upgrading, rather than Accessories bit.
Any chance a mod could move it there?
Cheers
Ant

I am a lover Piel Frama user since my first PPC and before see how they work in the south of Spain... they still working really hard as a hand made workers. The quality seems very, very good and if you want to know more about Piel Frama, please visit: http://www.pielframa.com/indexeng.htm

£1.79 from Tesco, lightly padded cordura small camera case.
It fits the Universal perfectly, and if you push it in SD slot outwards the flap leaves enough space for wired headphones to come out.
Bargain!

Only problem is that it would appear there is no belt clip
Nice!!
That's the first good case I've seen!
Looks professional and easy to use. Its a bit expensive to order it yet.
But that's the case I'm going to get for my MDA Pro
The missing belt-clip makes this case useless for me .. i want one with a belt clip !!!
- Superbowl
A beltclip is necessary for me, too. Without this function the standard MDA Pro case is OK with me. I think a case like the standard for the magician would be perfect for me - belt clip an quick release...
looks awesome, dunno that i'd trust having the pda open and the cover shut as those storage cards in the case get a tad close to the screen for my liking!
Flubster
There is not any plan at piel frama to add belt clip , i sent an e-mail to piel frama & they reply :
Regarding the belt clip, we have to inform you that due to the weight of the device and the design of the case, we cannot instal a belt clip on this new leather case. The clip would not stand the weight of the device on the belt. Besides, if we would instal a belt clip on the case, the functionality of the case would not be the intended one as the user would not be able to use the device with the belt clip on it.
We are sure that you will understand this situation and will agree that the belt clip is not a good idea for this model.
Please, do not hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.
Very best regards and have a nice day!!
I just bought the Piel Frama case. The leather feels good but there is one design flaw. It has a strip of leather on top of the keyboard. With it my PDA cannot close properly. I am so afraid to damage the hinges on my new toy. If you have any ideas to modify this problem please let me know.
If anybody wants to buy my Piel Frama case for JASJAR please let me know. I live in Hong Kong

You can cut the strip on top, near costures... I have one and no damage on JJ...
I am also very tempted to cut the strip of leather. But I was thinking if you do, after awhile the whole JASJAR might just fall out. Its really a pain to see such a nice case go to waste.
I was going to cut the leather strip as well. It does not seem like this is really what is holding it in so there would not be much harm in cutting it so that the device could fully close.
Can someone who did this post pics and say if it makes an improvement?
Cutting the case
Why are you guys cutting the case? Pielframa should replace the faulty cases. In the past they have replaced cases whithout the need to send back your faulty cases. Most people buy them from outside Spain. Sending it back internationally could be a pain. In the past when they released the first batch of the ipaq iPAQ H6340 cases, these cases were also faulty (it does not fit well). They did not recall the cases, but replaced them.
By the way the Pielframa issue is also mentioned on another thread. See
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=183962#183962
Maybe they've changed their policies on replacements. As you stated, I don't want to mess with a 2-3 week turnaround from sending from the USA and back to Spain.
Here is what I got from Piel Frama:
Thank you very much for your email and for your kind words about our products.
We are sorry to hear that you are having problems with the case. In fact, some of our customers have informed us that they are having some problems to close the device. Our craftsmen have been thinking about it and they have thought about a solution which would be to take the thin strap over the keyboard from the case so that the problem will be solved and the device will close without problems.
So that, we would ask you to ship the case back to us by regular mail and we would modify it the case. Our postal address is the following one:
PIEL FRAMA
Avda. Fuente San Francisco S/Nº
P. I. "LA PIEL"
11600 Ubrique (Cádiz)
Spain
Once we get it, we will make this modification in the case and we will ship it back to you.
If its a matter of just cutting out the back leather strip, I can do that myself instead of dealing with a 2-3 week turnaround not to mention the mailing costs in addition to costs that I've already paid, to mail it to them.
It is not very customer friendly. Pielframe cases are certainly not cheap. A standard (i.e. not crocodile or ostrich) Jasjar case cost at least 70 euro's about 87 $. So we should expect good quality and good working cases. If a case is faulty which could damage the jasjar / MDA Pro then they are liable for that. So having customers to spend more money (time and shipping cost) to have it fix does not really make sense.
My Piel Frama case just arrived this morning (ordered on 2 Nov.). I was excitied because my normally they have great products. The leather is nice, but I have to report the problem mentioned above is worse than I imagined.
With my case, the leather strap across the top of the keyboard prevents the screen from closing by about 8mm!
I can not even snap-close the case because the screen sticks up so high --even if I apply pressure.
So, my case is completely unusable. I wonder if they had real Universal units during the design process, or if they just worked form published specs.
Back to Piel Frama.
I was visiting Piel Frama Factory. They have an I-Mate JASJAS to probe the cases. I have a cocodrile leather case and my JASJAR close well. You can see my blog (click in my firm or www) ... and will see, in last picture, the Piel Frama's JasJar.
Have Fun
my word of advice is don't use the case unless you do something about it. after 2 days of using my piel frama case I removed it and notice that the hinge is quite loose. previously the joints were tight, right now when I move the screen portion there is a clicking sound and it is coming from the joints. piel frama case has damaged my toy instead of protecting it. I just cut away the top portion leather that is above the keyboard. I don't care about sending it back, anyway what can they do when the design itself is flawed.
I did expect a little more than just "send the case back to us", but I guess that is the way customer service has gotten these days. Fortunately, I purchased my case from a reseller in the US and only paid $54 but still expected better from Piel Frama.
This bad press isn't going to be helping them sell many cases, because most of us hear about these things through forums such as this one.
Does cutting away the back leather strap appear to make a difference when closing the Universal now? I'm ready to start hacking mine!
yes , cutting it off does help quite bit, its much better now. however it will not completely close because there are still 2 more pieces of leather at the side. what I did was that I used a clamp for about 15 mins both sides. it looks ok much better than before. a few guys on this forum has also done so. afterall the machin is more precious than the case

Hmm ... cutting the back stip off lowers the lid just a little. Cosmetically, the appearance is nicer with the strap. There's still some pressure on the back hinge when you snap the case closed. But, it looks to me like the top lid of the jj is flexing a little and like closing the lid is depressing the remaining leather on the sides that's causing problems. This pressure on the lid bothers me, but I'm not sure it will damage the hinge on my jj. I'm going to think about this more before deciding whether to return it to Frama.
I had, and still have, a slight clicking sound when closing the lid. This clicking sound isn't there at all if I pull the lid closed from the right side. But, it is there if I pull the lid closed from the left side. The swivel mechanism is rotated slightly counterclockwise and that is why right vs. left side pulling down of the lid causes no clicking vs. clicking.
This is not to say that the Frama case couldn't cause hinge problems for some. I don't think it would for me ... but I'm reluctant to snap the case shut now until I investigate further.

some question about Piel Frama jasjar

1). why it doesnt have belt clip ?
2). where i can find it in the lowest price on the net ?
3). can you show me another good case for my JJ ?
thank's
omry
1: Jasjar is too heavy for a leather case with clip. Aluminum, no problem, but leather is too soft and to weak to hold it like that
2: Some internet shops do offer slightly lower prices, but the difference is compensated by the fact that Piel Frama includes shipping in the price. If you want quality, be prepared to pay for it. I love Piel Frama, Covertec and Vaja, and for me there is no alternative.
3: If you really want cheap, go with http://shop.brando.com.hk They offer rock bottom prices and decent quality.
Piel Frama
I have the great chace to visit Piel Frama in the south of Spain. I was talking with the co-workers, all are really friendly and open to ear you what do you need. I was talking with the "gain" and I asked for made a special case. A couple days after I have a new model for my Jasjar, beautiful and always in my belt.
They really made a handworked job, artesanal. Try to send an e-mail and ask for your ideal case or whatever.

ebay
hi,
i got my piel frama case at ebay.de (germany, don't know about availability in israel) at €39,95, which is by far the cheapest i have seen and more than compensates for the free shipping piel frama offers. it was an original, came in the original nice box and all!
here's a link, this is the same guy i bought it from (recommended!)
http://cgi.ebay.de/Piel-Frama-Leder...843636129QQcategoryZ38994QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I came across this deal on ebay (UK):
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5845495318&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1
Please, find as attachment the pictures you ask me.
how much did you add moeny ?
Excuse me, I don't understand your question, can you repeat it please?
I think he means how much did it cost. Or how much EXTRA did it cost?
Apologies if that's not what you meant, but even so, I'd like to know the answer as I think that case looks rather nice.
As I wrote, I was in the south of Spain, I visit the Piel Frama Store in Ubrique and I meet every worker. The gave me a big favor, and I didn't pay extra money. As everyone knows, we have a special device, ist to heavy and has a lot of buttons. They also learn with people like you or me, the listen the customer and then they develope new models or ideas.
I think it's great that they did that for you at no extra cost. I wonder if they will add your case to their list of available cases.
Do you find that the clear plastic sheet over the keyboard traps a lot of dust? This is the only thing that is stopping me from buying one of these casesd at the moment.
Melty, I know somebody who has the new model and he has no problem, in fact, he told me the plastic is a very good quality, support the JJ without no problems. Yo can also press any key without no problems.
My case, dosen't has the plastic you mentioned.
Aha! So part of your modification was to remove the plastic. Did you have to change anything else to hold the Universal more securely? In other words, do you think that if I bought a standard case and just removed the plastic myself it would still hold the device safely? (i.e. does the plastic hold the device at all?) If so then I will definitely buy one. Sorry for all these questions, but I don't want to buy a case which does not do what I want!
Not, I took the first one, til then, Piel Frama modified the case. Why? Costumer said they have some problems to close the JJ totally. So Piel Frama received a disclaim and start to work in a new model. The model is with plastic as you saw in Piel Frama Internet page. I have the old one, I used a lot so I don't have any proble to close the JJ. A friend of mine has a review and some pics. http://sagit1964.blogspot.com/2005/12/funda-avestruz-by-piel-fra_113440007311726582.html
Hope I help you a litte bit.
I see. So it's possible that removing the plastic would make the case less secure (i.e. the Universal could fall out).
Thanks for all your help.
My idea, the plastic is an advance to protec your Jasjar and the Qwerty. Do not remove it.
Remember, Piel Frama, only make case for our Jasjar without the extra accesory we were talking about. Is my responsability, they told me, the Jasjar is more than 285 grs. is to heavy for this kind of material (the plastic for belt) dosen't work for a long terms. So, that's why they sold that case without the belt plastic accesory.
This is my 3 Piel Frama Case and always with the best quality, that's why they sell the produts in more than half world. Handmade!!!!
well, I am glad to hear happy people. My case is still in its box and there will remain. the new design didn't improve it, to my modest opinion. closing issues still remain and moreover the plastic is horrible.
i paied 70 euros and saw it on a site (I will post the URL but now don't remember) at about 50!
anyway, it is not the price. it is just that I think they could think of a different holding system but still want to stick with the same one.
bye
Hey Alex!!!
Howse it going mate? Still not sore at me i hope
I am quite happy with my Piel Frama case and highly recommend it to everyone. Regarding the price factor, the reason you find it cheaper elsewhere is because Piel Frama include's shipping charge in their price and the shipping method is through UPS worldwide which means you receive the case in 2 working days doesn't matter where you are
I would ask you to try out the case for sometime again, you just might like it the 2nd time around.
Cheers!

another case qu. - does anyone have this ?

These leather cases seem ok but the one I have just leaves tiny bits of material all over the Orbit screen....anyone know of a simple pouch for the Orbit?
Don't mean to hijack the thread but anyone have one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/leather-case...0QQihZ012QQcategoryZ48673QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Looks to be designed specifically for O2 but I want to know if someone recognises it as a proper Artemis case and not some other model's case that just happens to fit. (ie is it a dedicated P3300 case that will have a perfect fit?)
looks like a generic. problem with sleeve cases is that you need to take the phone out to do anything. so unless its top quality you can get scratches and smears over time.
Just got the PDAair flip case (for my orbit). Its quite nice as it protects the screen and trackball without actually touching either. However it holds the orbit extremely tightly, have to struggle to take it out (although I mostly keep it in).
this looks like the best quality one:
http://www.pielframa.net/pielframa_productos.asp?id=1690
buts it pricey. I'll see how my Pdaair is after a month .....

im using my 80gb ipod pouch until my case arrives! fits perfectly
Now got the pdair black metal case! its fantastic as the screen is protected.
One problem is you can't get the stylus out if you have an orbit, but a small amount of cutting with a hacksaw should sort that out
I got this case from ebay yesterday, seems very good....

It works very well, all functions accessible, is fairly bulky although and wont sit in car holder very well, however i believe a car holder is available which uses the round clip that comes with the case....

Question about Krusell "Orbit" Leather Case for Artemis

Has anybody used this case? Can you comment please?
I'm trying to decide between this Krusell case and the Piel Frama one.
Frankly, I prefer the look of the Pier Frama (from web pics), but the design and funtionality of the Krusell is where my heart is tending towards (plus, it is not lacking in the looks department too, it seems).
Comments from existing users should help sort me out.
See links to both cases here:
http://www.krusell.se/product.php?productID=2380&category=51
http://www.pielframa.net/pielframa_productos.asp?id=1684
Thanks.
Krussel should be nicer than they are, but Piel Frama was also dissappointing! I've had both, and the Krussel, while still being a "quality product" annoyed the hell out of me, while the Piel Frama was simple, it was never that slim. Both cases are too bulky IMO, they offer protection, but ruin the light weight ease of function that the orbit has... Your best bet is one of the many skin cases on the market.
Thanks BigKuri. Could you then suggest a good "skin" case? I'm very particular about device protection because I sometimes drop my phone. At the price point of the Artemis Premium, I really need protection.
While we are at it, can you tell me which was bulkier of the Krusell and the Piel Frama? Was the difference significant? Could either of them sit in a trouser pocket?
Thanks once again.
I have the Krusell case, I really like it, looks great and feels really well made - I don't find it too bulky - but then I have just changed from an XDA 2i so the orbit in a krusell case is still very much smaller. I would happily get another Krusell case.

Ha ha. Not quite what I meant bdangol, but I would like to know if it does cause so much of a bulge.
time to be constructive.
I don't like any of the leather cases because they make the phone so big. get a nice skin or hard clear plastic case. Ok they don't have pockets for memory cards and stuff but with it being such a hassle to put cards in and out of the Artemis I could not be bothered any way.
Krussell
The first thing I did when I put my Krussell case on was drop the bleedin phone, but due to the sturdy build of the case, and despite dropping everything onto a rough concrete surface; not a mark on the phone or case - so decision made, the phone stays in the Krussell till someone prises it from my cold dead hands, or I sell it all on ebay, which ever comes soonest...bulky or not - job done!
you could buy a vintage red telephone box and put a personal computer in it and a camera. if you drop that.....hell you cant even pick it up
I've got a Piel Frama and it's very nice, but I can't carry credit cards with me. Does the Krusell case take a credit card or two in the flap? The last one I had for a Hermes took 3 cards...
Yes it does, and spaces for two full sized SD cards for some reason, but handy for an adaptor at least.
I bought a Krussel case a few weeks ago and mean to do a write up now I have had it for long enough to spot the pros and cons.
I'm using this Krusell case as well, so maybe a mini-review in few words:
It makes artemis more chubby, yes. But also makes me less worried about scratching, dropping, stepping on, whatever elese, on my pda. It's nice, black&beige shining armor Another good functionality - camera lens is hidden, no worry about scratching it. And at last - if you want flip the top (to attach Krusell logo to magnet) make sure you deattach your swivel from multidapt cradle or you'll have very bad scar on top.
Hi,
I like the Krusell orbit leather case in combination with the windshield holder. A real perfect combination. Krusell is also cheaper than Piel.
Regards,
Daantje
I use the Krussell case and clip it on to my belt. I also purchased the Krussell bicycle mount and put my XDA Orbit on my handlebars running TomTom if need to calcuate a fast route or am biking somewhere new. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it. The Krussell case I had for my XDA Exec (HTC Universal) was nowhere near as good quality as this one. My only complaint is that the fastening flap goes directly over the USB mini-port, making headset use fiddly but possible.
Krusell Case for "Orbit"
Very nice case but the Belt clip came off on mine after a few weeks, now have to use the belt loops, OK but inconvenient to remove case. My "biggest gripe" is that it's a bit "big" for my Orbit so I would shop around a bit more & let me know if you find a better fit!

Anyone with Just Mobile Rugged Case, please?

Does anybody own Just Mobile Rugged case for HTC Prophet? I mean this one: http://www.just-mobileonline.com/products_protectionseries_4.html ; http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=141177
I am asking because I would like to buy one for my HTC TyTN II, but I am not sure if it would fit. According to this comparison: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=733&id2=391 Prophet is 0.3mm wider, while TyTN II is 0.6mm thicker and 3.2mm longer.
(I would like to attach my TyTN II to my bicycle, but standard bike mounts wouldn't work for me, while they are not protecting the PDA in any way. And Just Mobile case seems perfect in this (although I am not sure if it would be possible to attach it to a bike). Also any other ideas are welcome.)
Thank you very much in advance for any replies.
I haven't used that, but bear in mind that the underside has holes where dust and moisture could get into contact which you device. And the screen may be open to dust, rain etc too.
I cannot remember where I saw it now, but there is a case that fits via a mount to the handlebars, and you slide the phone in - it has a clear flexible plastic front.
I remember reading that it was a very tight fit for the Prophet, at least.
My intention is to use it for TyTN II, but I would like to have a look at it in case you happen to find it.
Thanks for reply.
Found it! look at www.boxit.net - under products for the phone skin, then accessories for the bicycle mount. best of luck (& enjoy the cycling! - I've got a 70km MTB marathon coming up this weekend )
And here are a couple of photos:
http://www.modaco.com/content/HTC-Prophet-Prophet-MoDaCo-com/247717/Waterproof-Case/#entry835568
Oh, looks great. Thank you very much. Maybe I will give it a try, althought it is a little bit less rugged than I would probably need.
I am in the process of deciding between this, Otterbox and perhaps some other (semi-self made) option.
Edit: Good luck in your marathon ;-)
At last I have opted for OtterBox 2600. Will post here my impressions once it arrives if you are interested.
Lok forward to hearing about it! I've always wondered about all the bumps and vibration related to fixing it to the bike, but the review I posted about the Boxit case seemed to suggest it didn't affect the terminal.
(the marathon was great! - very wet though, both rain and deepish rivers to contend with)
