I have searched all the different PDA forums and all the software sites and cannot find anything close to what I need. Like many of you my device needs a good ol' soft reset several times a day. Then it is always ready for the next thing I might need to do. I would be willing to pay $20 for this simple little applet. Here is all I would want it to do.
It should have a config screen that lets the user designate a specific time of day or a time interval to perform the soft reset. And (important) it needs to pop up a warning window before it soft resets that allows the user to cancel the soft reset in case he/she is using the device. But if there is no response to the dialog after 10 or so seconds it goes ahead and soft resets the device.
I know this is possible because programs like Sprite Backup will perform a soft reset if desired after a scheduled backup.
So get to work you programming gurus. There are many of us who would gladly pay you for the effort. Anyone else that is interested in this simple app please sound off? But don't complicate the design with more and more features. That is what is wrong with many of the apps out there today. They try to do too many things and end up not doing much of anything well.

Actually, I don't think that the app would be very hard to make. Also, he might mean that if anyone knows of an app already made, he would be willing to pay up to $20 for it.

OK knuckleheads. No one creates software hoping that only one person will buy it. Most simple utility softwares out today cost $5 to $25 to purchase. I am saying that this very simple app would add such value to the HTC devices that I would be willing to pay $20 for it. I was soliciting responses from other users to see if they were interested also. If enough people showed interest in paying for this app, maybe it would motivate someone to create it. I know it might require you to think outside the box, but if 20 people bought it, that's $400. If 50 people bought it, that's $1000. Are you catching on?

If you've got $20 to spend, you can buy one of the backup programs. I think they generally have a scheduled backup function, which will also do a soft reset I imagine. Two for the price of two?

Sorry Vijay, I wasn't familiar with your development. I am now. If someone can make this app and it works well, I will be their best salesperson. My Sprite is not a good candidate for this because I do not want it doing full backups every 2 hours (which is what I would set for the soft-reset interval for once someone makes this cool little app). I do one full backup at 4 am each morning. I am holding out hope for this...the few apps like this on Handango and other sites just don't make the grade.

I tell ya, I would pay $20 for it if it would work like I outlined in the first post. Like the earlier posts I have looked EVERYWHERE for something like this. Kai's and others have similar functionality but do not address the critical components (IMHO) of what this tool needs. The whole purpose is to allow it to soft reset every X minutes...not just one time every day at the same time. I have lots of software loaded on my device and therefore all kinds of little glitches. They are always solved by a soft reset. So, I would set my timer on this hypothetical app to soft reset every 30 minutes. NOW THE KEY is the ability for the app to throw up a "Cancel" dialog each time it is about to reset so that you can cancel the reset if you are in the middle of doing something. But if the device gets no cancel command after, say 15 seconds, it goes forward with the reset. That it! That's all! Nothing more is needed. That would be one of the best things I could load on my device.

Thanks. This is so close to being it that I can almost taste it. This is the best I have seen yet but it just falls short of being useful for interval resets. It gives you the choice to set soft resets at as little as 1 minute intervals or as long as 1 hour intervals. So far so good. It even has a check box asking if you want a confirmation dialog before resetting. Still good. But here is the flaw, at least in how I want this type of utility to work.
When you are using the device you need to be able to cancel the soft reset via a dialog and continue working. This app does that. But it needs to be able to reset itself during all of those times when you are not using it. This is why it is imperative that if the dialog pops up and gets no cancel command for, say, 30 seconds, it goes ahead and resets itself. The app referenced above unfortunately will just sit with the dialog box up waiting for interaction and never reset itself. Obviously when I am actively using the device I can soft reset it myself and don't need an applet to do it for me.
Another issue I have found with this app is that when I schedule a reset interval for, say, 5 minutes, it resets correctly the first time. But after the first reset it wipes the settings away and does no more interval resets after that. Obviously another problem, at least on my HTC Blue Angel.
So the challenge is still out there. After seeing this I know it can be done. Someone could easily sell this for $10 a pop on Handango and other sites.

I know that Android based phones have applications where you can track your phone through GPS software should it ever get lost. Is there such an application for our phones? I'd hate to lose my phone that has GPS capability and not be able to find it. And the thought of losing it and someone else finding it, hack it, and use it for their own personal use would be very more irritating.
And I know that the Motorola CLIQ even has the capability to erase all your stored information on the phone should you lose it to prevent someone from hacking into the phone and retrieving your sensitive information. Again, is there any software for our phones also?

I just tried the Maspware GuardsMobile and ended up locking my phone up. It recommended disabling balloon pop-ups and a soft-restart. I allowed that then it gave me errors loading some related tracking.exe file. I tried to enter the default pin and it didn't work. Gave me 3 attempts. After the 3rd attempt the phone was locked! Searched around and came up with nothing. There's not even a guide explaining what happens.
So now I'm forced to reflash the phone and restore my PIM. I do not recommend this program for anyone with cooked ROMs.
I'm going to now play with Ultimate Theft Alert.
Can't find any command lines for Ultimate Theft Alert V35. I don't think I really like it a whole lot as some of the others...think I'll try my luck at Maspware GuardMobile again.
Ok, reinstalled GuardMobile. Activated it (fingers crossed). It recommended disabling the SMS bubbles again and a soft-reset. I let it and amazingly my phone didnt lock up this time when entering the demo password "1234".
I feel much more comfortable trialing this program than Ultimate Theft Alert as they list the commands on their website, and you don't get ANY commands list until you've purchased UTA. So without having any commands to trial the program I will not be purchasing UTA.
Time to play around with MaspWare GuardMobile now...
Ok, just tried to exit GuardMobile and I got the freaking error again!
"An unexpected error has occurred in GuardMobile_TS.exe.
Select Quit and them restart this program, or select Details for more information.
Luckily this time I didn't leave it active while testing. Reset phone and it works. But everytime I try and test the locate or monitor it fails to send SMS. Then I exit the program and it crashes. I'm going to uninstall and forget this program...AGAIN!
Sprite Terminator seems to work so far. Only exception is that I can't use the "Alternate GPS" It doesn't give me a lock on my position and comes up with all ZEROS. Going to keep playing with this.
Had you tried any of the web services I've posted?
They both work fine for me. And they are both free (at least, for now, at Beta stage...).

Well, Flexilis have a "Scream" command, that will make the phone starts playing a rather anoying horn sound, for 30 seconds.
Handy to find a lost device, at least. And to get some atention on a stolen one, but the thief can just turn it off...

Hmm might be at least a bit useful like you say - maybe a password to turn off sound will be better?

I'm going to give kaspersky a run, it sounds good.
So I have been using my imate PDA2k without a hitch, purchased it unlocked, and was using a local carrier somewhere in Europe (Voda). Went to T Mobile in the same country and put the sim in - BOOM - white screen on startup and it seems to have reset because I heard the pings to indiate screen alignment.
Took it home, used My Mobiler to looksee what is happening. Its all working fine, the screen and everything, its just white! And after several Power/Reset button resets everything is still there but on the device - white screen only. Power on battery and backup indicated 100% but backup battery for a while said "needs replacing" - then on settings now its 100%
The touchscreen works! I reinstalled the password and when I touch the white screen in the places of the four numbers, its ok!
But its all white! What can I do?
hi and welcome to the forum.
there are basicly two options to what could have happened, either something got messed up with the rom and after the sim changed it was triggered and went completely wrong or while changing the sim, you accidently caused a hardware defect.
another way to try that is: put the device into bootloader mode!
the way to do that is press power+record+reset. maybe hold the power+record a little longer after resetting.
if your device screen shows SERIAL V2.0x (where x is a number from 5 to 7), apparently your hardware is ok and just your rom broke. in that case, after you claimed you already hard resetted, you might want to flash that rom again. if i read your post correctly, you are still running wm2003se. if your carrier does not host your rom anymore, you can always refer to xplode's shipped rom archive here: http://firmware.atspace.com/Blueangel.html
if your device still shows only white, either when trying to access bootloader mode, or after re-flashing, yo might have harmed your hardware. you might want to check for a replacement screen. if you want to have a look inside your device, whether the display cable maybe broke, here is a link to the service manual: http://rapidshare.com/files/336406555/HTC_Blue_Angel_Service_Manual.pdf

or you could upgrade your rom to wm5 or above, then the backup battery is not needed at all.

So I waited about an hour of using it with My Mobiler but with a white screen only on the device, and then waited a bit, and and just pressed power and reset again to see if yet another reset would work - and it did.
It was so strange that the previous times I tried to reset it didnt seem to work at all. But I knew that the screen was ok because I used My Mobiler and could press the password for the device on the white screen ok, guessing where the numbers were, and it activated fine.
So strange, but its all ok now. Thanks guys - this device is 5 years old!
mymobiler is a remote connection to the device, so that does not necessarily shows, that the screen is working, because it uses the usb port to determin, what the display would show, just like a remote desktop connection to a pc can work, even when your vga or dvi cable is broken, because picture information is sent through lan or wlan then, with a virtual graphics driver. also for some people, the touch feature worked fine before without the screen showing anything, because that is also another layer, that is transmitted through the digitizer. it could really have indicated that your display flex cable was broken, which is why i went both ways in my answer.

back in the day, when i still used wm2003, i felt quite excluded in mobile developments of the last few years, because many 3rd party applications would just work on wm5 or above and with that rom you can be up to date and use a lot of new features, which make the phone feel less like an old pda and more like a new phone. but now, that your device works again, of course that is completely optional.

i also had different gui improvements installed on wm2003, but still it didn't feel to fingerfriendly, which is important for me, because, let's face it, the BA is a modern phone, not some geeky 90s PDA , so fumbling around with a stylus is just not cool. also, whenever i looked on engadget i was incredibly envious of all the cool apps and GUIs. whenever i looked at ppc freeware pages i saw that most games, media players, browsers... would just work with wm5 or above, and after i found out, that it is incredibly easy to make your BA become a modern device (i would even go as far as calling wm6.5.3 a 2010 phone), i decided i want that, to kick every iphone's butt, to install any app i want, not to be forced to install 20 programs after a hard reset anymore, because everything already works fine and looks nice. i mean, these days, you hard reset, the extrom installs windows marketplace for you, you log in with your live account, it downloads everything you had installed/bought from there, including microsoft myphone and when you start myphone, you are already logged in, so it syncs all your pim data with the internet, and you have everything back. back in the day i was afraid i would lose everything i set up for ages if i ever had to hard reset, these days it just takes an internet connection and 20minutes of your time, to have your phone completely back up after flashing a new rom. it is amazing. before upgrading (the procedure for windows xp is to be found in the 2nd post of the link above) you should still make a backup of all your data, either through pimbackup (freeware by dotfred) at http://www.dotfred.net/ or with spb backup, available at spbsoftwarehouse as a trial version, in case you want to go back. about those backup apps, pimbackup is great because you can schedule backups of all your important information, also stuff that is not synced, like sms or the call history and restore it to any other rom or even other device, but it does not back up your installed programs (most of which you won't need anymore anyway.). spb backup on the other hand makes a backup of the entire system, and can restore the exact state of the device after a hard reset, including all installed programs and those programs settings, on the downside, those backups are worthless on another rom, just work for hard resets.
that was just a fair warning, because not everybody is happy with wm6.5's battery life and performance, especially when coming directly from wm2003. i started with wm6.0 and so i am used to those disadvantages, and since the roms get better with every new release, it is actually an improvement for me every time.
also i need to tell you, that by tomorrow, there will be a new rom released build 23518 by egzthunder1. yes, although the number is not higher, that rom is newer. but since none of us know, if that rom has any bugs, it might not be right to start with that one right away, you should probably try the one from my signature / from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=569869 (same thing) because there, the bugs are known and listed. when you have found your way around the new OS, you can still switch roms in about an hour, as stated above, you travel light with the new roms, and as long as your pim data is backed up and you follow the instructions, everything will be fine.

It seems that I have broken my Display cable as I don't get any display.
But sometimes when I Slide the keboard in and out many times I do get display.
I took it to the local mobile reparing shop and he says that the cable is broken but I will have to change the complete LCD, as it's not possible to change only the display ribbion.
I was a bit worried in changing the complete lcd as I am not sure what quality of LCD he is going to use.
I would like to know if it is possible to change only the display ribbion. and where can I get one. Your help will be greatly apprreciated I really love this handset and don't want to leave it

have a look in the service manual, there you will find the exact display used in the device. there is a photo of it on page 55.

I saw the display from the service manual, infact the mobile repair guy had opened my phone and shown me the display, but I was concerned if there is any chance that i can just repair or change the ribbon instead of the complete diplay.
i haven't opened up my device, yet. i'm glad i never had to, but from all lcds i know, i think that the flex cable is integrated in the display unit and only has a plug on the other side, so you cannot detach it. also, you should think about costs. the cable alone probably wouldn't be any cheaper than the entire display and if you had it assembled in a local shop, changing the flex cable only (if possible) would be much more work than replacing the entire unit, so causing more costs. actually, i believe the cheapest way would be, buying an entire new BlueAngel. new devices go for 100eur here in germany. the official retail price for a display unit alone is 130eur.
So the co. I work for uses Exchange server and it requires a security code...I know on my old HTC Touch Diamond you could change the time it asks you for the code to 24 hours so I don't have to input the code every minute...
Is there a way on this phone to change the time so I don't have to input the code all the time? It's driving me crazy!
im looking for the same thing, or at least something to make it not require a password...i used to use csdevctrl for windows mobile and it worked perfect...oh please oh please someone say there is something out there, i HATE having to put a password in each time i turn on my damn screen!

It is unfortunate that this solution requires total lapse in security... on my Pre, I was able to modify the OS to five the desired options. Hopefully someone will figure this out. Until then, I (and probably all of you too,) will be breaking corporate policy and bypassing the EAS security policies. FYI, depending on where you work, this can get you fired, or worse.

Definitely. Don't find a way to bypass it all together. This can get you fired and it is also bad to bypass your IT dept. rules and regulations.
However if there is a fix or workaround to be able to extend the time like you ca in WinMo please do tell. Inputing it every minute is so painful with the keyboard that pops up...you have to swap it to the # mode...
I wish it was like in WinMo or the Iphone where it pops up with a number pad...
You know I know MS has done some DUMB things over the years but I think this has got to be the dumbest!
I don't put my credit card onlline esp for games and other trivalties. What I do is buy points I did it for my PS3, and I decided to do it for the MS store. Well low and behold the games can be bought, the music/video can be bought with points but NOT the apps!!
This is the dumbest thing. I don't want games on my phone, or music and videos with DRM lock on them. What I wasnt is a sirius Satalie radio app that apperently I can't buy without putting my credit card into the system.
So now because of MS's reasoning people who go to all that effort of building these apps and deserve to be paid for them can't be, and because I like so many others refuse to use our credit cards on the net and for a 1 dollar item the developers loose out. And not that i care i'm out 40 bucks (2800 points) I care that thats money MS gets and I will never spend, so they win!
Or you could do as I do, and when you want to buy an app, you complete the transaction on your phone, and have it charged to your phone bill. No hassle, no fuss, no credit card involved.
Unfortunately i doubt my system works that way, though it would be nice.

are the price in USD or local currency(own country currency)
I am in the US, and all of the purchases I have made have been in USD. I don't know how it might work (or not work, as it seems) in other countries.
When I buy from MP I just pay using my Credit Card detail I have it stored with Live ID.. when I dont want them to charge my card I just buy it from my phone instead and my Atnt Bill gets credited at the end of the month for all purchases from my phone together...
I like phone billing better because its all together at month end.. I get time.. where as from card I keep seeing every 8-9 USD two three times.. so sometimes I could run into risk of overdrawing and stuff..
But than if I buy from phone.. I would have to re-install it again in case if I ever have hard reset my phone, (I have never done hard reset on my phone yet!! )... so I use MP to buy and install and dont have any problems..

Actually, even if you buy an app through Zune, you may still have to reinstall it from your phone after a hard reset (or replacement).
I recently added more memory to my Focus, which required a hard reset. After completing the reset, I connected to my PC so Zune could reinstall all of my apps, but only about a third of them auto-reinstalled. I don't know if the limit is time-based or number-based, but from what I could see, only the apps that I had purchased/installed within the last 6 weeks were present. The rest all had to be manually reinstalled, which was not fun at all.
This for me is probably the most frustrating part of the WP7 marketplace. We have no tool, either in Zune OR on the phone (it should be on BOTH) to allow use to see a complete history of what we have downloaded/purchased, with options to permanently remove things from the list that we downloaded to check out, but found to be worthless, and another option, for times such as following a hard reset, to select multiple apps to reinstall (or optionally "all"). Instead, I have to keep it all in a spreadsheet on my PC and manually install almost every single app. Lame.

I just save my ATnT bill which lists all my purchase for that month and I also get regular Emails in my LiveID for all the purchases I make at MarketPlace using my Card, so I dont have to maintain a spreadsheet right now..

Do through your zune settings on your computer, there is a spot to show you what you bought. thought not sure about that if you buy it on your phone.

I'm not sure if that even shows a complete history of Zune-purchased apps. And, even for the apps it does list, it doesn't provide any tools to reinstall. In fact, Zune doesn't allow any manual reinstall, period. It HAS TO be done on the phone.

I hadn't tried to use that tool in a while, because the last time I did use it, it didn't list everything. It looks like it does now list everything (even apps purchased on the phone), but still lacks the ability to reinstall apps from there. And there is still the glaring lack of a similar tool on the phone itself.
Actually it's weird but believe me apps keep reinstalling for a few days on Zune after a hard reset. It doesn't make any sense but I experienced it with my phone.
That said, a way to backup would be ideal, specially when it comes to game saves.

After completing the reset, I connected to my PC so Zune could reinstall all of my apps, but only about a third of them auto-reinstalled. also its cheaper to just buy it via ATT, saves me a few cents of sales tax.
Just setup a credit card specifically for online purchases. You are protected. Just make sure you check your statement each month to make sure there were no fraudulent charges.

I dont know why people have to maintain a list when they get all the info in their billing.. users can just save their emails/atnt bills..

the Zune created backups save apps and game saves. The backup is surprisingly thorough. There is a program on XDA here now that will trick Zune into creating a backup at any time.

That's true, but there is no selective restore feature. It's either all or nothing. Plus, if you have a Focus, and add more memory, the backup will not be recognized as valid for your phone any more.

You can't backup specific data with that tool. What it does - basically spoken - is force Zune into the update mode, so it runs a backup of your device. After the backup is finished, the update process is aborted. When you now want to restore the backup, you just do a simple rollback from within Zune.
I need to try this, cheers. Xbox Live is getting cloud saving, would be great if WP7 games were included in that.

If you are like me, you should have all your favorite apps, documents, pictures etc. stored right on your phone that basically gives a full picture of who you are as an individual. You also have been pretty satisfied with the pattern, pin number, password or face unlock or all of these together as a security you have in place to prevent unauthorized access. But here is something that happened by accident that led me down this thought process. While trying to yank out the phone from my pocket while driving (which when you are getting a phone call especially becomes the most impossible task), I noticed that the phone "Power Down", "Restart", "Airplane Mode" pop up was on. This is on top of my regular swipe to unlock with pin number lock screen. This made me curious and noticed that the back button will work to close this pop up and also the power button works to reactivate this pop up. I hope everyone is with me till here. What surprised me was that the phone will actually turn off or restart from this point without the need for an unlock code. This means anyone with rooting and backup knowledge can steal my phone, restart my phone into recovery and wipe it to make the phone their own or just create a backup (CWM) and through that access my personal information. I know that photos and documents stored on the external card is open unless encrypted. But I hoped the internal data would be secure.
What do you guys think about this? Is there any app that would prevent access to the phone while locked via hard keys? What do you do to keep your information safe?
TL;DR version
If phone is stolen and person has knowledge of android they can factory reset your phone, even if you have a password setup. If they enter recovery they can wipe data and factory reset your phone and now it is usable for them.
My theory if you have your phone rooted I wish there was a way to lock the recovery with a password. Unfortunately ODIN will always be available able to get back to stock. Cerberus is a great app to have full control of phone if stolen FYI

If I have your phone in my possession I guarantee I can hack it regardless of any security measure you make take, so the best solution is to be able to wipe it remotely.
technically even a remote wipe is not enough if the thief is knowledgeable. I accidentally wiped flashing in Odin with nand erase checkd and recovered everything that was on it using this

Exactly my point like everyone else confirms it here. We have advanced so much to a point that even a 9 year old (not that 9 is too young to know computer basics) who is familiar with basics on rooting after reading through forums after forums can get away with stealing a smart phone now a days. At this point the only way I could think of protecting my data (first priority) and then track my phone is if the tracker is incorporated into the boot loader or recovery itself on top of what ever software you have installed in the OS. So if the thief tries to unlock my phone after a restart, the installed software should take care of the rest but If he/she is smart enough to go via boot loader or recovery then the incorporated tracker can do its thing. Anything of that sort exists?

You don't, but its easier than going through all of the steps OP posted.
I really doubt my data is worth anything. Pictures of my cats aren't exactly hot commodities and I don't store anything on my phone that I wouldn't publicly reveal, anyway.
I wouldn't be worried about my worthless information, just annoyed I was dumb enough to let it get stolen. Yeah, I know that basically anyone with half a brain can wipe a phone and re-sell it - it always amazes me when people think that thieves aren't smart enough to do that.
I'm cynical. Saves a lot of worry since I just expect the worst, I guess.

I would be less worried about the minute possibility of a phone thief targeting your personal information than I would be about your personal data being mined from your phone by numerous applications.
Bottom line is, if you use Google or Facebook, you personal information is already in the hands of giant corporations who will never be held accountable for the theft of your personal info.
Take Facebook for example - within the app, the only time it should ever ping your location is if you are using FB chat and have the location setting enabled. However, even when you disable location within FB chat, every single time you open Facebook it uses your GPS to get your location. Every time.
In addition, although you are unable to see it in action because there is no notification icon for it, I would bet a million bucks it's also pulling your network location if your GPS is off.
Facebook is constantly working in the background - even if you never opened it.
Google? I won't even begin to try and explain the amount of data they are collecting from you. As is T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, ATT, etc. every single second that your phone is on with data enabled.
Should we be concerned with some random thief who knows the ins and outs of Android pulling your data? Sure, we should think about it. But the reality is, if you own a smart phone your information is already out there in the hands of companies who will use it to any end they can in order to turn a profit. Period.
ButWhile I see the pros and cons of different parts involved in using social networks and so forth, one thing we can (at least for now) be certain of is that they won't use your credit card information etc. to make illegal purchases and so forth. I know of a person who routinely used the credit card app to check balance, pay bill etc. and next thing he was getting phone calls to see if the purchases made at a casino in Spain are OK?! This is without ever losing the phone!!. So, it could be worse in the case of phone loss. Sure, personal data, pictures and even email to some extent is not as bothersome to me as identity theft. Thank to some anti-fraud features of the banks etc. one can deny and simply not be associated with that activity (of course in legitamate cases). My friend ended up getting another card with different number and they closed the online banking account. He had to re-register all over with another id. So, it can be a big hassle. I heard of cases where people had to hire lawyers and run around courts to prove their innocence due to identity theft. Of course if you keep a picture of your driving licence on the phone, you are really asking for it so... (trust me, one girl was doing this because she didn't want to carry her purse/wallet on night outs)
Having said that, I am always worried if the roms we download here in XDA have trojans or backdoors built into kernels and system files... I know that it is like doubting even the good devs but how do we know for sure? Unless you are really an in-depth expert and figure out all the details such as processes and ports that are open and so forth, how do you really know? The phone's data icons keep pinging back and forth every now and then and at times I wonder what's being sent and what is it receiving... just sync'ing contacts...or...??
Call me paranoid but, after what happened to my friend, and similar stories, I am a bit skeptical about the security and integrity of the ROMs in the first place... Now, mostly I download and try different roms and settle on one that suits my preferences. I use the phone for calls as well as to make general tasks easier in many aspects except financial transactions. In short, I don't trust my smart phones.
