My PDA2K is falling apart (I have dropped it a couple of times which has not helped.
I need to replace it and I am wondering with what.
I could simply go for another PDA2K but really never want to buy from i-mate ever again so am looking at [email protected]'s XDAIIs and IIi or the T-Mobile MDAIII.
Which is the best or would you steer totally clear of this phone because of all its problems?

I've got an O2 XDA2s & a work colleague has the T-Mobile MDAIII. Persoanlly I'd use either agin depsite their known issues. I like having an all-in-one device & am happy to compromise to get it
I would definitely buy another XDA IIs, if mine died. The grey colour of the O2 device simply oozes more class than the silver handsets.
Quality has been good (except for the hard reset issue when removing the battery - which is easily solved by keeping the power cord in when changing the sim card). I would be tempted to hang on for the universal though....... NICE!
i simply cannot afford to buy a brand new one if mine died, id have to wait til i can upgrade again, but if i could, then i would buy another as i have already got my bro to get one of these, and also he is a driving instructor, so its useful for his appointments and stuff.
if i was close to my upgrade date tho, i would just wait and get the next xda

Personally, no. I've realised I don't need the organisation or programs of a PDA. I bought it for Skype, but that doesn't work. The build quailty is not amazing.
I'll be going back to standard Sony Ericssons next contract period.

I'm very disappointed with all PDA's.
As a long time user AND enthusiast, I'm completely dissatisfied with everyone available. Moving to the BA from a HP, I expected better innovation from the leading producer of WM based PDA's, especially after seeing what HP was producing with the 6500's. Now I just realized that HTC is producing the 6500 for HP...!?!
Why wont someone produce a quality device with a hires (vga) screen, good memory (128 RAM, not to mention the availability of multi GB micro drives), reliable phone (GSM), fast data (GPRS/EDGE), un-crippled Bluetooth (audio/voice), and a small form factor (Treo). It has to be possible. I paid $850 for the BA (unlocked), and it's ridiculously unstable, and can't do what my $50 cell phone can do.

I hear you man. Sometimes I wonder if I should have got a different Pocket PC so Skype would actually work.
All of them are crippled/broken/manufactured badly in some way. The BA has its fair share of problems, but the important thing is that they're no more than any other PDA (apart from maybe the keyboard).

Some guy at work has te iPaq hybrid pda/phone. Quite swanky. I recently have this descision on my plate. Keep my new XDA2s or swap for the slower, but better made and more stable SE P910.
I'm waiting for Nokia N91.
I will surely buy another Blue Angel. Wish they could makde the keyboard more stronger and add WM 2005 in it .

Is your phone covered by your house insurance.....was it you that dropped it? I would be suspicious and claim for a new one if you get my drift!
I would definetaly buy another one! It has had it's issues, but they all do to one extent or another. I use mine for my work all the time, and it has been the best unit that I have owned to date.

Absolutely NOT. Sick of the instability, the poor support, the resetting 3 times a day and everything else that goes with it.
Never again!
I like the idea of an all in-one-device but...
1) phone is unstable
2) bluetooth is unstable
3) pda is unstable requiring resets
4) no UMTS
5) no "good" camera (0.3 MP ? come on! 5MP cam phones are out already)
6) no EDGE support
7) low memory
8) don't use keyboard as often as I thought
it is an OK device, but could use a lot of improvement.
I live the universal and I would give it a try if it were quadband
Until 3 days ago I would have said no. My 02 XDA2s was horribly unstable in all the ways described above.
I then had to try and find a replacement all-in-one. All I found that does everything this does that I need is the XDA2i (which from reading the forum sounds just as bad) and the Nokia N91 (out this Christmas at the earliest - I needed a handset NOW!)
I will take the keyboard of the XDA2s over the camera of the 2i anyday (all XDA cameras are limited by the crappy lenses anyway, no matter hoe good resolution they make them). The keyboard's really useful when doing things like entering passwords with greater accuracy or chatting on MSN.
I then flashed my ROM and radio to the latest availible and I have not had to reset yet in over 24 hours!
I was resetting my other XDA2s with 02 ROM 5 times a day!
Flash your ROM!! It makes this thing work to an acceptable level! Media Player 10 is great too, although the buttons are disabled which makes toggling the screen difficult. Album art and media centre synching make it worth it
Nope, I would not buy another BA. Next time I want to upgrade to get the HTC Wizard. Smaller phone with built in wi-fi and WM5.
With the BA:
I have never used the slide out keyboard
I am fed up with wi-fi choosing whether or not it wants to turn on
I am fed up getting the driver low memory message on BT
I am fed up with the phone locking up up so I can't call out and others can't call me without doing a soft reset or turn on/off BT every time.
Some of you are missing the point here! Let's compare to units that are already available, not things that have not arrived yet! With the right rom combination,this is an acceptable unit! Edge is new and very limited right now,and was not available when these came out.Stability issues can be resolved by cooking your own rom! Using reasons like that,as well as "I don't use this,or that feature", is not really the point,is it!

this is the best i've ever had...i started from xda1 then xda2 now xda2s...that's why i love this site...and thanks t'all the people Here...lm working at night, n use my wifi w/o problems...use my verichat for chatting or agile, surf net...play my old school super nintendo (thousand selection)...use resco to ftp my website n upload/dowload mp3's ,files etc....listen my new remix mp3's w 2gigs while im in the gym ...ayt....
With the current selection of phones/pdas in the market today, I would still buy the same IIs I have....thats considering I can still aford one

I was about to buy one so wondered 'if you were buying again TODAY would you buy this phone or another?'

Why not?
You are sking about Orbit/Artemis, but I believe the guys with the O2 version are the most affected by the bugs The P3300 etc. have shiped ROMs available so it is easy to restore when in trouble. The lesson here should be not to start messing around with your device if you are not in possession of the original ROM.
I have been very happy with my device and would buy again, only I am waiting for the HTC Advantage. When we start tweaking that too we will have the wailing and gnashing of teeth if people do not take precautions
Once I managed to get the P3300 Rom on my Orbit it's been a much better device.
Previously I had a I-Mate K-Jam (Wizard) and the main downside I had with it was the size of thing when it was in my pocket. I don't even notice the orbit meaning that it can now be my all the time phone instead of just my weekday phone. Previously at weekends I found myself changing the Sim Card to a smaller phone when I didn't care about having the extra features.
But if I was buying now I'd wait and see what happens with the WM6 upgrade (if it comes along).
I would buy again - not had any problems with my standard Orbit

This may be a bit off topic but it is just to erritterate what "victoradjei" said... I remember when the Magician was quite new and users who started tweaking intensively encounterred a lot of problems and I was at first very scared to buy it. I eventually bought one and waited until hacks/tweaks were reliable. As of today my Magician works well.
I would buy it again, too.
The CPU is a bit slow, but I knew it before.
Everythings works for me.
I have the P3300 and I didn't mess around with the ROM or use any tweaking programs.
It does what I want it to do - so I see no point trying to turn it into a super computer.
Bottom line is I am happy with my choice - then again, my last phone was a Nokia 6100 and that was pretty high tech for me at the time also.
I didn't buy mine (part of my job entails maintaining over 1500 O2 UK smartphones so I get to play with a few of them), but the Orbit is easily the best iteration I have used so far.
The best as in form factor and it-is-a-phone-after-all usability/battery life, responsiveness and reception quality (no 3G or keyboard are not concerns for me).
So to OP, definitely (until the next FOTM arrives)
Definately yes - THE only thing that will tempt me away is apples iphone..... Which I hope someone will make a BT GPS unit to work with it.
On the orbit The only really annoying thing I find (having now hacked the Stereo BT to work, and tweaked Today interface) ... is the camera is cr*p ....it only works outdoors, no macro, autofocus - beaten by ANY sony E !!!
I must admit it is the iPhone I am waiting for but I need a phone in the meantime..

The only issue I see is that with mSD cards going garbage.
Apart from that, I never had any problems (and if you do ... well ... it is Windows agter all !!!).
I would definitely buy another P3300, especially if there will be an updated version with mSD fix, a faster CPU and some more built-in storage. WM6 would be cool.

Its bulky, no 3G, can't load 3rd part applications, no GPS, only 8gb for music (I need at least 30gb otherwise I need to pick each day what I put on), suspisious battery life.

Not to get off of the subject, but my wife gave me the Creative Labs NOMAD Jukebox Zen (USB 2.0) one year for X-Mas.
Since then, I have taken out the 20gb laptop drive in there and replaced it with a 60gb drive
It seems like the since the iPod came along - having very limited storage space that cannot be upgraded without tossing out the old one and buying a new one - it set a trend in the rest of the market.
I look around the shops once in a while and see how mp3 players went from 60gb off the shelf now only hold a few gigs at the most for the same price.
Now this brings up the question:
Is the iPhone going to drive the technology backwards like the iPod did for the mp3 players making end user lose out in the end?

Although the iPhone can't do anything my Orbit can't, I am very impressed with the form factor and user interface of the iPhone - if it works as slickly as the demos suggest.
Similarly, my Nomad JB3 40Gb does a lot of things that my early iPod Photo 60Gb simply can't do - but the NJB is just such a crude device to operate in comparison to the iPod.
At the end of the day they are only products to be marketed, and for the majority of consumers the i*** interface and form factor are an easy sell.

this is my favourite type of discussion. off-topic of course ....
my counter-argument to you is why the macbook is a tiny minority. Sure its slickly marketed, looks cute and has a nice interface (although - kill me - i kind of like vista . Buts it has no pcmcia card (so my 3G card can't be used), is heavy (5lbs vs, say 4lbs for a toshiba U205) and ir overpriced. most people are more intelligent then the marketers, which is why some fish are snagged (i.e. the macbook sells at all) but most people who want a cool small laptop still go for a samsung or sony. and most sensible people get the £400 15" basic .....
Now we are WAY OFF TOPIC.........
I am intrigued by Colonels comments, I bet he has never used a Mac for real?
Many people are forced to use a PC for work but I know many people who have been PC users for years and finally tried a Mac for home use and would not go back to a PC again.
But back to my original question. )

I currently own a Prophet (I-Mate Jamin model) which I bought around 12 months ago on an o2 contract. I'm happy with the device and haven't had any issues with it that I haven't been able to resolve myself (& by lurking on these forums) but as I mentioned, I've had it about 12 months now and I'm due an upgrade with o2.
I'm considering getting an XDA Orbit but the specs seem pretty much the same as my Prophet. I'm attracted to it becauase physically it looks nicer from what I can tell, but that's pretty much it.
Can any of you shed any light on what the main differences are between these devices and if it would actually be worth me upgrading to the Orbit?
WM6 is obviously a big factor in this, I don't know if it will ever be availible for the Prophet but it appears that there may be a chance it will be availible for the Orbit.
The only faults I have with my Prophet are the way it has the worlds worst vibrate feature (very noisy & long) & it's quite weighty and a bit bulky for my pocket. If these features are better on the Orbit then it would be a selling point for me.
Lastly, one thing that's importnat to me is the 'keypad' software that seems to be present on the Prophets roms. I'm used to this for one handed input, - is this availible on the XDA Orbit?
I realise this is all a bit drawn out but I'm hoping that there will be members hear that can relate to my issues and give me some advice!
If not, I might just stick with my Prophet for now and see what else comes out in the future, although I'm also slightly tempted to go the Symbian route and get a Nokia N95 which o2 also have an offer and it looks quite nice (but then I don't know a great deal about Symbian)

An update to an Orbit will be fairly easy for you as you will be used to the operation of the phone
You will also get
wi-fi - I use this all the time
GPS - either Co-Pilot or you can get TomTom (worth the upgrade on it's own in my opinion
WM6 next month (hopefully)
O2 will let you have it for free, you can sell your old one on ebay for £150ish
I don't think the N-95 is all it was cracked up to be. The GPS is not as good as the Orbit - either the hardware or the supplied software

This might be a silly question but can you get the T9 'phonepad' on the Orbit, it's just I read in a review that it wasn't available & I use this constantly on my Prophet.
One of the other things about the N95 that's been attracting me is the camera quality, but I do feel more comfortable sticking with windows mobile if I'm honest, especially if I can upgrade for free.
Also my Prophet does have Wi-Fi, I use this a lot...The N95 also has it...

yes the phone pad was posted on the forum and I use it all the time with my orbit.
I cant argue re the camera - the orbits is good in daylight - not so good in low light. Definately 1-0 to the N95 for that one
I've not seen tomtom running on a 95. I gather the supplied s/w is pretty lame. The GPS chip is not SIRF III, meaning it takes a few mins to lock on when you start up. Also needs a failrly good line of sight in your veh according to some
My orbit locks on in around 20 secs. It can even get a lock from the middle of my house

Sorry to keep up with the questions, but one last thing - GPS is new to me. Is this something that there are data charges for? I'm not sure how it works.
I've a Vodafone sim from my works phone that I was hoping to use in the Orbit but I'm not sure if I'll still be able to use GPS with it or how much it costs if I stick with my o2 sim.
I guess I should probably be proactive and Google this!

GPS = Global Positioning System. Free and used worldwide
GPS is free on the Orbit as it behaves exactly the same way as a regular in car GPS (unless you subscribe to live traffic updates which use GPRS - which is your phone's mobile data service)
The maps are stored on your storage card and therefore require no downloads. It does not matter which network or sim card you use as the orbit's GPS is stand alone
I believe the N95 uses GPRS to download the maps so that may be a factor to consider

The reason I went with the Dash was because I wanted something with:
wifi
bluetooth
skype capabilities
PIM
thumbpad
mic
stereo out
can play mp3's / video
expandable memory
cheap $$ <150
I looked at the Treo 650, the Mylo Com-1, Tungsten C, etc.
I also looked at a few without thumbpads like the TX and the dell pda and stuff.
I decided on this thing because it is really small, runs wm6.1 which seems to have an active community of developers, has an active community of users with useful forums like the one I am currently posting on.
This presents me with the obvious problem that this is not really designed to be a PDA... it is a phone, after all.
So, the question I present to you is this. Was this a good idea? Will I find the neutered phone too annoying for daily use as a PDA?

Sounds like you are getting what you want and cheap, pretty much is a personal digital assistant, you will want to put a sim in it but you can get the phone unlocked here @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355789
So as to use any network except 3.
All in all i think you will be impressed with your purchase.
My opinion.
If I were you, I would have have purchased a PPC...
Touchscreen and a better selection of programs are the benefit.
The Dash is great for a smart phone, but not so great as a plain old PDA.

I LOVE my dell axim x51v, awesome audio, video support. skype works well, SD and CF slot, so you can get a frigging lot of memory on there. And the community "has been" pretty active and the ROM is much better then the original.
But the dash is great for what you want. however if i did use my dash for audio/ video purposes, i would be disappointed by battery life, speaker placement, and cost of microSD.
I need to find something similar to sliding panels for my x51v, and I'd be set.
Due to a shipping error my dash JUST arrived today (~$110 shipped). My accessories have been arriving slowly over the last week, so I was able to test everything pretty extensively.
I bought a 2gb microsd card ($5 shipped) to load up with roms for dual use between my homebrew wii (with microsd-> sd adapter) and my dash. I also bought an 8gb micro sdhc card(~$25 shipped) and a 3.5" headphone adapter (~$6 shipped)
I put some music on the 2gb card as I think I need an update before I use the sdhc. I played some mp3's with the WM software. Nothing fantastic - definitely not as good as a standalone mp3 player, but this could just be the software. I will try tcpmp later.
I turned the phone off in connection settings, turned the wifi on and set that up with my home router. My hope is that disabling the phone will mitigate some of the battery life problems I've read about using the wifi. I browsed around with ie a little bit. It was pretty quick. I will need to install a better web browser - i've seen a few mentioned here.
Other than that... i'm not sure where to begin. I'll need to load up one of these custom roms, install some applications, get syncing working with ubuntu, set up email, etc.
My initial impression is that this was definitely the right choice. I had never actually seen one of these until I opened my box today. I used Sizeazy.com to compare the size of the dash to other devices before I ordered, but I did not realize it was this small! The keypad is going to take a little while to get used to. But yeah, I think this is going to work pretty well as a PDA.

Seems like a great deal. The Dash is great for value, flexibility and connectivity.
A touch screen WM6 Professional with similar or more features and a slide out keypad would be better as a PDA. But it could be tough to find, especially without a contract, for the price of a Dash.
As mentioned above, you can get the Dash to do much of what a WM6 PDA can do. But I find my self wanting a WM6 PDA more and more.
And as for a browser, definitely install the Free Opera Mini. It's among the best.
i just dl it (opera). it does work a lot faster. i kept trying to log in here to reply. i would thumb in my username and password and it would say i was logged in successfully, but, when i clicked the link to redirect me back to here, i wouldn't be logged in! after 5 tries i remembered to refresh the page (it was loading from cache).

Every phone I've had has been Windows mobile based.
Now I am thinking about getting WM7 phone but the hardware is just not quite right.
I managed to get a hold and play with a demo Mozart.
At the moment The mozart is fave because it fits snug in my palm and the camera is 8MP. But that is all. There are some bits I want before jumping in.

Micro sd.....Errr if you feel like voiding your warranty
Hdmi out... Nope
FM in/out... Nope
OK now for question time.
Has anyone got a conversion chart to show how much space 1 min/ 5 min /10 mins of 720 video takes up on a Mozart?
Does WM7 switch to a removable storage mode like the old windows?

I can only answer the last question .
wp7 sees all the storage as one big drive (rom+sd) so lets say "512 MB rom + 16GB sd = 16.5GB of storage (we don't know where it is stored )
and remember ! , you can not swap the sd card and use the DATA on it after swapping.
fm in/out? do you mean an fm receiver? if so, it has one. but no, it cannot act as an fm transmitter.

Yes it does but for some reason it only works with uneven frequencies. 105,1 105,3 105,5 etc. Unless I'm missing something obvious.
i got it working for frequency 103.2, so i don't think there is an issue with it.

Yeah it was something obvious. I noticed that there was an option to change from North America to World in settings and now I can access a lot more radio channels.

This seems counter intuitive. Is there any legitimate reason for this?
ms simply does not allow swapping memory cards for "security reasons" and would like you to use their cloud. which provides you with 25GB(?) of additional storage. for that matter there is simply no need for more storage unless you want to beat the upcoming iPhone 5 with 64GB build in. who needs that?
the internal storag card is somehow "glued" to the device. so even if you find it its just not worth the hassle. for a big upgrade it might be worth to void the warranty, but not for a daily swapping.

WEll Im not a fan of the cloud, I prefer direct control over my own data. I feel the cloud is bad for data security and integrity. I do not see how a removable storage device is less secure than some random servers that could be located anywhere. And with my current phone I have the option to use "The Cloud" or my Sd cards or both. Why would anyone think it is beneficial for their options to be reduced? Why should I put my personal data into the hands of a complete stranger?
the argument behind the use of cloud over local storage is similar to the one of android vs windows phone.
basically, the reason they made the microSD cards not "hot swappable" is so that they can encrypt the whole card. this way, noone can just come around and take the card out of the phone and get all of it's contents.
in terms of cloud vs local storage and which is more secure, really, neither can be said to be completely secure if you're on the internet. that includes your phone. if your phone uses data, then it's not secure, that includes bluetooth. pretty much everything is hackable. though that is the worst case scenario. in terms of putting your information in strangers hands, you merely being on the internet is doing that. in the hands of google, microsoft, and any other service that tracks cookies, browser patterns, etc. so really, your information is everywhere.
Security is more than just whether your data is secure from hackers. It also keeps app developers' data safe from you. MS knows that they need good apps to sell the platform, and to get devs to put forth the effort they have to show that the platform won't allow the ease of piracy that Android users have become accustomed to. Yes, it is a tradeoff, and it might not be for you, but I do not see that changing anytime soon, so if you wanna go WP7, that's what you're looking at.
I have to admit that the idea really did not appeal to me in theory when I first heard it. No one likes the idea of giving up a freedom. However, after using my Focus for a while, I have found that, for me at least, it is far outweighed by the positive changes.
That being said, the last thing this forum needs is yet another thread devolving into a nonremovable storage bashing session vs. WP7 fanboy argument, so I'm just gonna suggest that you really honestly try out 7 before nailing it over a point or two. It is a much larger change from 6.5 than can be really explained by a quick bullet point list, and really deserves to be approached with a fresh mindset. If it works out, awesome. If it doesn't, then that's just where you're at.

Sure, if it ever gets ported to HD2 ill try it out , or ill have a look at my friends mozart , but aside from that even tho I still have my concerns I agree this is not the place for argument, and even though I only partly agree with the answers, they did give me somthing to think about and thanks for answering my questions.
