(Posted this in the thread for the T-Mobile ROM, but realized it might be better to post it in its own thread.)
After upgrading to the latest BA ROM (the T-Mobile one), I have some GPRS problems. Namely, if the screen goes off, GPRS drops.
I know the device is capable of keeping GPRS connection with the screen off, because under the previous (O2) image, it had no trouble. I am getting better Bluetooth performance under this image (whether through actual fixes to the stack or just dumb blind luck), so I would prefer not to revert if possible.
(I'm also seeing it periodically drop the USB connection while cradled, but haven't figured out any common cause. This is annoying but not nearly so much so as the GPRS problem.)
Is anyone else experiencing any issue like this? For what it's worth, my actual device is branded as an O2 Xda IIs.
This is your solution
Hello:
A great guy solved this... It owrked for me... I changed the AP name to internet as he said and worked!

Has anyone been using Skype lately on their Qtek 9090? I'm having a problem using it. When I make a Skypeout call it will suddenly hang up the call, and although the Qtek says the Wifi connection is still active I can no longer access the internet on it. If I close down the wifi connection then try to reconnect it can't do it anymore, I get no connection at all unless I soft reset and then it connects fine.
Anyone know if there is any kind of problem with wifi on the qtek 9090?
Thanks,
Dimitri
I have your problem
Yay, finally someone suffering the same issues as I do!! I have this on an XDA IIs which is based on the same HTC Blue Angel as your 9090.
Have you tried skype what stood next to your AP? In my case I dont get the problem with max signal, but with anything less it shows its self.
Not alot of help of course, if you have to stand next to the AP you might as well sit at a PC and use that version!
Have a look at:
http://forum.skype.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=12511&sid=c7678729e0141ce3db97a475731b419a
And please add a 'me too' comment to the end of said message. The skype devs pick up stuff from their forum and 2 people with the same issue might mean they fix it.
To be honest, since skype hangup kills wifi for *any* application (soft reset required), it is likely microsoft's fault - skype is simply uncovering a bug in MS's software. Put simply, no app, no matter how badly behaved should be able to take out your internet connection. I have a suspicion that this problem is initiated by some kind of malformed packet. I have seen the same problem with bluetooth. I think it takes out the IP stack, rather than just yr wifi.
Anyway, here's hoping for a fix...
Nigel
Hi veletron,
I saw your reply just after writing a post on the Skype forums. I'm sure what you think is wring is pretty right but I'm really hoping that it's a Skype problem as I don't see any fixes for the problems that exists with the Blue Angel being forthcoming.
After reading your post on the Skype forums I realised that I had already had a full conversation using skype when I was sitting at my desk but as soon as I try to get more comfortable futher away they cut out. What's strange is that even when I'm next to my AP, I don't see any difference in the signal bar.
Dimitri
Hi
WiFi reception on the blue angel is known to be sh1te. I wish they had included a dell style bluetooth/wifi antenna on the top!
I played around with some units in PC world, alongside mine. They were getting a much better signal from the BTopenzone AP than my XDA did.
The other HTC devices saw several updates during their lifetimes, hopefully the blue angel will get fixed. I have so far encountered about 25 bugs, some of which are pretty serious ones.

Hi folks, I have a Qetk 9090, the rom is WWE 1.22 the Ext rom I don't remember but I it is not the latest one. Anyway
Before the 1.22 rom, I tried Skype on Wifi no problems everything went well, not if I receive a call or make one after 30 seconds the call crash, the Wifi seems to crash as well, if I stop it and restart it, the Wifi software won't work but the wifi light will blink... I need a soft reset to make it work, if I do the same test at thome calling my PC with my PPC, no problem... what is going on? Is that a Wifi Issue or Skype ?
Thanks
My XDA IIs has always done this. Skype know about this issue, and there is a thread here about it as well. They (skype) say that its the Blue Angel, not skype. It does not appear to be only the blue angel either.
Interestingly, for me it works if I stand next to my AP while using it. Hardly convienient!

i use mine over bluetooth activesync on my xdaII (no wifi) and encounter the same problem.... only happens when i use skype though.
I have had major problems with Skype before version 1.1.0.6. This version doesn't have a problem on my IIs. As a matter of fact, I leave Skype and FWD on for more 48hrs without it crashing. I have had experinces with having Wisbar advance installed and random application would crash. These voip apps would not have the chance of being installed if I didn't have a wifi network.
I also have 1.1.0.6 but experience the same symptoms. I've read some skype-related issues on xda-dev and believe it could very well be the wifi's subpar quality.
Just now I tested a skype call sitting right next to the router - no problems at all. moved into the living room - other party reported distortions in my voice. moved further away, into my room - distortions worsened, until finally the wifi connection dropped to nearly "zero" (no curved lines around the wireless lan manager icon on Today screen). immediately following, connection totally terminated, and the pda's internet will not WORK at all, despite still showing status of "connected". only solution is a soft reset.
nomadman, did you find that the 1.40 ROM upgrade helped at all? as a last ditch effort, I will probably try migrating over to 1.40/1.12radio to see if things improve. ( see http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=22429&highlight=skype )
kia do not upgrade the rom counting that it will increase the range of wifi or bt. i have not noticed any distance increase upgrading from 1.33 and the last radio version. i upgraded because i wanted to learn how to upgrade the rom. i can get 10 to 12 meters from my AP. thats with a hallow wall and a cement exterior walled home.

Thanks for the warning. I seem to consistently get BAD reception from the router to my room, which is less than 8 meters away
I just confirmed that the Skype that comes with ROM 1.40 is 1.1.0.7... so I may just give THAT a go afterall as I'm all out of options..
Are you getting good distance with a desktop PC? I wasn't aware that Skype is included in any ROM. At least it wasn't included in my 1.40 upgrade.
good news to report: I finally took the plunge and upgraded to 1.40ROM, and my Skype via Wifi issues seemed to have dissappeared!
Very prelim info and will need further testing tonight at home, but just now at the office I was able to talk for over 8 minutes with NO disconnections. veletron and others who have this problem, this may just be the fix!!!
Skype is definitely included in 1.40, at least in the 1.40 I-mate rom that I upgraded to today. The version included is 1.1.0.7.
Great news m8. can you extract the 1.1.0.7 cab and upload it. the skype site only has 1.1.0.6 available for download.
Skype 1.1.0.7
Try here:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_ROM_140176_WWE/Default_SkypeForPocketPC.CAB
Please post the version number and I will update the wiki page for that EXT Rom. Thanks
Thanks for pointing the right direction m8. Indeed this is Skype 1.1.0.7.
Anytime dude. Be sure to post your experiences with 1.1.0.7.
Guys--you won't believe this, but the problem is it's the NETWORK! If you have a GSM/GPRS XDA II running on T-mobile or Cingular in the US and you've been having problems with the gprs disconnect you're not alone.
I've spoken repeatedly to Dubai--they know it's an issue and they're working n a fix but don't have a time frame yet. I've downgraded to the original ROM and I've cooked the ROM using 1.40 and downgradng the caller ID files to the 1.17 build to eliminate the gprs disconnect problem.
NOTE: if you use a goodlink or other push technology this is a pretty good fix, but the problem still comes and goes because the problem is the NETWORK!
I get a t-mobile tech I know to level with me today on the phone. The fact is, the 'internet.3.voicestream.com answering modem disconnected please check your settings or reset your device' message is occuring because there are intermitent problems on the t-mobile (and he claims cingular as well) networks do to infrastructure damage. It seems some of the e-mail servers and answering modems were clustered in the south. T-mobile knows this but isn't talking about it.
So, before you strip your device down again and rebuild from scratch (AGAIN!), soft reset. Use the phone and disconnect the gprs. Try again later. The network may be up then.
Damn, I wish they had told me that before. I've spent weeks and days rebuilding this device with different ROM versions.
Right now I'm back on ROM version 1.02 that shipped with the IMATE (PDA2K_CDLWWWE_11222_169_10200_ship.exe you can download that fromt he IMATE web site or from onthe gosolutions via FTP) device because that's what certified with the goodlink license. Can't hurt. Then I can yell at goodlink too.
But so you know the issue looks network related!
oh good grief......I was seriously about to do something like that and decided to check the forum out one last time before i did.....and am I grateful that I did!!!!
I used to be able to connect to the TMobile GPRS network pretty ok...now I have to either toggle the flight mode or soft reset it every time just to get it to connect.....no amout of tweaking the connections or even the clubimate CAB file have made no difference....I have the 1.40 and the radio is at 1.12...and as I mentioned, it was working last week...and now its this...I didn't want to upgrade to the radio 1.13 and after seeing this,I am going to wait......I have had enough of my PDA2K crashing on me..... :x
A few people have been having the same issue as me with more recent AKU3.* ROMs, wherein the radio features (GSM/UMTS,GPRS etc) - cease to function. Symptoms include the connectivity icons becoming non-responsive to stylus-press, and phone calls starting, but no call being made (silence) - and calls refusing to end.
This has been driving me nuts, and just when I think a new ROM (CE or Radio) has solved it, it re-appears. I have been playing around with everything I can to either diagnose, or solve this problem, and this is what I have found:
The phone only locks up, when handover between GSM and UMTS has occurred several times. I use the Hutchison 3 network in .au, and the coverage in Sydney is a bit spotty - hence the frequent handover to 'Roaming', and back again. Now that I have disabled the GSM functionality (i.e. just use UMTS, in the 'band' menu in 'Phone' settings) - I haven't had a single phone lockup.
To the other people having this issue: does this pattern of use sound familiar? I.e. is your main carrier UMTS, roaming to GSM? I'd like some feedback to see if we can isolate this, or if this solution works for other people
Hey
Had this problem many times with all kind of roms.
Usually the icons would react to clicks, but internet wouldn't work and also calling.
When I would turn on flight mode, the right icon (your reception) would change and gets a little cross (telling its disabled). But the left one would still be stuck on G/U as connected. It would take a min or 2 before it finally updates to a little cross saying its disabled. Then I can disable flight mode again and the phone would work (most of the time)
I live around 70 km from my work and I drive back and fort every day. In the car my universal is in the charger and I have always live messenger connected and AS for email.
during this trip my reception is lost twice, besides that it switches a couple of times from Umts to Gprs.
I've updated my phone to 1.14 radio en helmi 3.5 aku rom. And have experienced a couple of times what you discribed. The 3G and G/U icons wouldn't react to the stylus and the phone seems to be stuck. The device itself still works. But I have to soft reset to get it going again.
So after reading your story I can say this scenario refers to my experience.
I'm gonna try your solution from off today and let you know
I have only GPRS here and this problem happens to me with all AKU3.x versions even with different radios (1.09 -> 1.14.10) ... I still believe it has nothing to do with ONLY hand-over ... I reverted back to AKU2 and it never happened since then
Same here....
I have similar experiences with UMTS and GSM handover issues. I observed that sticking to one band (in my case GSM since it is more prevalent than the other in countries I go to!) is the way to go. When in M1, I got dropped problematic calls and my SMS were delayed but when I stuck to GSM only then everything was back to normal. I have been trying out the new Radio Rom 1.14.10 with Helmi AKU3.5 for 3 days now and am not having handover issues! Could be the Radio Rom or the Rom itself but if it acts up again then I know what to do then! Hope this helps!!!
The problem is in rilgsm.dll file.
I can tell that it is solved in crossbow.

would replacing the file in the current aku3 roms with an older one fix it?
i myself dont have the problem but allot of 3.2 wizard testers do.
Good to know, that I'm not the only one with this problem. I have seen this behaviour in all ROMs, not just the AKU3 and can confirm that it iseems to be related to the switchover between UMTS and GSM.
It also only seems to happen only when you have the internet connection open, which will always be the case when you use push-mail.
I had similar problems with the MDA III, whish I used before. Maybe it will get fixed in Crossbow - but by then we'll likely all have new phones.
^^
My internet connection is also always active. I have now switched from AUTO network to WCDMA (umts).
Going to see if this helps. After that I'll try the GSM band to see if it makes a difference
But it's something my device always had problems with, so I guess it's ROM independent
I'd like to see if that rilgsm.dll can be re-used. Unfortunately, the coverage of UMTS in the area where I live is far too spotty to be comfortable with pinning the radio band to UMTS.
However, I'm interested in your thoughts.
I must say that I agree with biso007. This problem started to occur when I upgraded to AKU3 roms. Before, I was on AKU2 with the exact same radio rom (I didn't flash it!) and never had any issue. Combined with mamaichs comment that it is related to a DLL file, I would say that the problem is indeed not related to a radio-ROM but to the AKU ROM.
Just my 2 cents....
I had same problems with Radio lockups on my UNIVERSAL. I've tried different ROMs with no luck. BUT after changing my Radio rom back to latest from T-mobile (1.10.03) everything back to normal- all day driving with GPRS on - no lockups at all!!! 100% solution is..... use old radio rom.
Would not mind downgrading...
I have lockup issues as well... if this really helps, I will downgrade the Radio ROM without hesitation. Where can I find thsi Radio ROM; is it on the xda-dev FTP site?
Thanks,
-Ireneus
Hi All!
Yes, this issue is the most annoying among all other issues, and it makes UNI impossible to use as the phone for business communications.
I confirm that lockup issue existed on EACH radio version I used and on EVERY ROM version.
I don't think this issue is caused by the GSM Band switch or Internet connection active or anything else specific, because this lockup happend even on networks with no 3G at all and no internet connection active and also BT and WiFi off.
It happens when I start intensivelly use my UNI for calls, sms, open contacts, view appointments (note: No 3-d party software at all).
I also mentioned that the issue happens more often with the battery level below 50% or so and almost rarelly happen on external power.
Another "good news" here is that if you receive an SMS during that intensive operations, you will permanently lose it after the phone lock up.
Thank you,
Dmitry.
I wonder is this is just a Universal issue? Or do other devices have the same issues; I mean as frequently as on the UNI.
If it is just the UNI than indeed it is useless as a phone and nothing more than a beeping, brick with a nice VGA screen. I basically fidn it hard to believe that this is the case and I would like to know if there is anyone out there, who does not have lock-up issues with the UNI and I would also like to know from the people who are testing Crossbow if the lock-ups still happen?
All input appreciated.

The problem is one of the most annoying ones you can have: it appears only from time to time and you don't know when and even when it does you don't notice.
Simply my phone is not accessible for others even it shows full range and so on. The message "...the phone is switched off...". This problem occurs in as far as I remember 3 releases of ROMS (full, vanillas, etc). The radio ROM was also changed. I don't remember having such issue in early WM6 or in original 2005.
Since it's not related directly to any of the releases I post it as a new thread.
Now I have 3 options:
1. Downgrade to 2005
2. Throw the unit through the window, wait until end of contract and buy an iPhone
3. Try to fight with T-Mobile UK - which is not really an option since I just recovered from fighting with Orange for over a month
Does any of you experienced such problem?
Any known issues with downgrading to 2005 like ISPL required before flashing original ROM?
Any suggestions?

Well, I got the answer - couldn't wait and did the downgrade using original ROM. If anyone interested it went without problems. No ISPL needed. Connected, fired-up the exe file and worked OK.
I'll see how about the availability problem.
Ok, seems that it's only me having the conversation ;o)
I apologize for the thread location - it doesn't seem to be related strictly to WM6 anymore as I...
...installed WM5 and did some tests:
(I have voice mail switched off)
- Call waiting enabled = no calls allowed when GPRS active
- Call waiting disabled = no calls when transferring data (large file) but received when no transfer
- Used W660i SonyEricsson handset - could receive calls regardless of GPRS activity
Rang T-Mobile tech support where they told me that this is network feature that when internet connection is active no calls are allowed and since my voicemail is turned off all callers get message that my phone is switched off. In the light of GPRS specification and my tests this is a bull****.
Now I'm asking anyone on UK T-Mobile Web'n'Walk and who wants to help - please do such test. Just try to call your number from different phone when opening a web-page.
This is pretty important to me - I need internet on the move and don't want to get rid of my MDA.
Thanks in advance!
Hi there,
I'm on T-Mobile UK too and I ran some tests myself and found that you are absolutely correct. When you transfer data you cannot receive phone calls.
I've got an O2 device with me I can do some more tests on and I'll also try and borrow my Wife's Samsung and test that too. I'll post my findings here.
Cheers
Alex
ok, i've just tested this on an O2 3G device and there was no problem, next to try a none windows mobile t-mobile phone.
seems this problem has been around for while and on other networks.
http://www.freenfo.net/mobile/archive/index-t-64022.html
ok, final test and conclusion.
I tested the same o2 phone as above but in a NON 3g area (i.e. gprs only) and found the exact same issue.
conclusion: this seems to affect all types of phone and multiple networks but only when using gprs NOT 3g.
I'm suprised we havent heard more about this problem.
cheers
Alex
Thank you Alex very much for your help.
I did some research on the topic last night and found the same info as guys in the thread your linked. It must be that T-Mobile UK operates in NOM-2, which allows to suspend GPRS session only when no data is transferred. When packets are transmitted the device doesn't 'see' incoming calls as it's 'busy' with dealing with the packets. NOM-1 is 'able' to encapsulate information about incoming call into one of the packets and the device is notified about - so it can react, suspend the transmission and pick up the call.
The fact is that our MDA/Artemis uses Class B of GPRS which doesn't allow simultaneous CDA/GPRS at the same time. Even if it can suspend active data transfer it is the network that has to support that feature.
What I must notice is that I had lot more problems wiht this when I was using WM6. It seems that there were some packets transmitted by the system or something. I had my mail set to check servers every 15 mins at the beginning but lately ony once an hour or two. Other soft that could transmit anything was Weather module from SPB or Touch. Now when I'm on WM5 and was checking the issue during loading a page I was unavailable but as soon as a page was completely loaded my phone was accessible back.
My surprise is that if the 'issue' seems to be quite normal and there is nothing to do about it why I couldn't find any info about it here. Doesn't it affect anyone of our community?
I may be wrong with the WM6 expirience but still. If WM6 works fine in that respect it must have happened that someone missed a call when browsing the net.
i hadnt noticed to be honest

Did you try ringing your phone when it was loading a long page or downloading a file?
TBH I think I've noticed it just as much on WM6 as I did (or didn't) on WM5, I think I put these odd voice mails turning up down to weird WM issues! Now I know the truth though.
Obv. there isn't a lot we can do about this and I'm not prepared to turn off my Windows Live Mail or my direct push. I think we just have to wait until our contracts are up for renewal and get over to a 3G device - I'm liking the look of the Touch Cruise myself, or the Touch Dual if I want that keyboard back and by the time my contract is up I think they should be on T-Mob UK.
does the same thing happen in Edge areas or as that rolls out will the problem disappear?
I'm not sure about how EDGE works but the problem affects GPRS rather than 3G due to the fact that GPRS and the incoming call are submitted alongside each other and 3G is seperate. I don't think t-mob uk have edge running yet so I can't test, perhpas some else can test for us.
Bro.. My first 3rd party ROM is the Touch 3.0.. and yes.. my connnection did go off once a while (no bars as well).. that was kinda irritating. I have to go to connection manager and toggle my data connection or something like that, before my phone will get the GSM signal.
And yea.. the original WM5 and WM6 have no such issues.. I wonder if this is because of the new radio version..
