Can anyone suggest a Spanish-English Dictionary?

I'm taking some pretty intensive Spanish Classes here in Spain (native English Speaker and it's my first, second language if that makes sense). We are allowed and encouraged to use dictionaries in class but I've seen the electronic type are much faster.
Can anyone suggest one that might work on my Dash? Free is always good, but I'll also consider some inexpensive ones.
Thanks for your help.

a few suggestions about adding non-htc WM devices support

*edit: as many people suggested in the posts. a new single forum for other manufacturers with 1 single subforum per maker might be a better idea than whats suggested in this post**
the mods have explained several times why they are not willing to support other non-HTC devices for various reasons over here so im not gonna ask that. i will however ask that the admins to consider spinning off another site to do that.
there are some other sites that try to do that but they ALL fail miserably because they dont have the ridiculously high number of smart users registered to them. to solve this major problem, i propose that the users data base of xda-dev gets synchronized with the newly created site.
the new site may look something like
- windows mobile support and development forums
- htc built devices like palm,xperia...etc
- 1 subforum per device (more if its a very popular devices like xperia X2,omnia, toshiba tg10...etc)
I wasn't aware of the reasoning for no non-HTC device forums. You have a link?
Personally I think we should have subforums for the popular non-HTC devices like i780, Omnia, Epix, SG01, Asus devices, etc. But who am I?
there are many http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=464635
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463252
and the reasoning is that "jack of all trades is a jackass" or something like that

First of all, title is misleading.
Second, it's never gonna happen (another site needs more resources, which this site is struggling with.
Third, I give you one day before this thread gets closed.
Cheers

stop suggesting them ideas. and they wont
Its so much easier to add a single "other devices" subforum (not even full section like what they are doing now for every single device device).
this way we all get the advantags of having non-htc devices without the extra work and headache that goes with creating full website page.
i like the " the users data base of xda-dev gets synchronized with the newly created site" part though
My opinion is to leave XDA as it is now
Do not add more non HTC forums!
It will just make it slower
Should be around the net good forums for other brands
When have you saw a site together between reebok and nike?
Every one has its own stores
Just my 3 cents
i had the same idea when i bought my omnia
http://winmodevelopers.co.cc
this site deals with all of the non htc devices
((although may i remind you its no way affiliated with this site it just served as inspiration))
it already has a few roms and a marketplace was opened in january, and yes were stuggling with resources but thats the way it is in the shadows lol
any non htc winmo device can be added, although smartphones will be added through poularity
also we are moving the entire site soon to a dedicted server soon courtisy of QUICKSITE and this will take time but feel free to add your nuggets of info to winmodevelopers.co.cc
also take note its a very fimiliar format to xda so u wont get lost
(disclaimers : winmodevs is not an affiliate of xda-developers.com, the onlt connection is certain members including me who frequent both sites)
I think that would be really cool! The TG01 needs to have support from the wonderful ppl @ xda!
ive already got the tg01 there and now ive just installed a chatrrom for geeks

I apologize for your dismissiveness. Only thing I would point out; is that in any enterprise, diminution of effort is really a bad thing. Take the examples of the car cos. just to name a couple. Orb3000 has it right, I've got a motorola device. Found forums that are exclusive to that. I believe that works out the best.

Well as I understood HTC as a company has nothing with this forum?
And I'm sure reebok and nike wouldn't make site together because each of them want to sell it's sports equipment.
But, if some sport equipment lover make site about sport equipment I'm pretty sure there would be nike and reebok and many others.
I have HTC so I selfishly don't care if there are other devices on XDA-developers.
But if I buy some other non-HTC device some day I would really love to have support for it from great site like xda-developers
cheers
Can someone please explain to me how operating a forum with the amount of members and posts is not a profitable business?

well firstly
Board Statistics
Our members have made a total of 272 posts
We have 341 registered members
and theres only bout 23 or 24 forums so that makes ur stateate very brash
secondly you think anything you start now will imediatly get 1.5 million members and chefs will flock and devs will batlle to host there crap on ur site, it doesnt work that way
ive worked really hard to get to the site in it urrent state and itll only get bigger
also you have to take into account everyone is eih ergreedy or impatient so if theres question asked on wimnmodevs then nobody sticks around too long because they wont answers now
so see as many little members there is that brilliant going when u rememerb the site only been opened for 6 months and xda has been going for years
but then again u sdont have to use it, thee are a few who are. but i mean if you really dont like it and if its that bad feel free to trawl around xda asking bout it when theres one there
btw this wasnt meant to sound *****y if it did i apologise im just saying if u want a new site at the drop of a hat that has this much support then it not happening im afraid site like this take time
Ok then. Whoever is willing to pay for the major bandwith and whatnot step right up and pay.
Usually I have never comment on those post ”we should get additional None HTC device listed here” but now I will give my 2 cents on this subject. THIS IS MY PERSONALY OPIONIEN I DON’T MEAN TO INSULT ANYONE!!!!:
I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY WE SHOULD NOT LIST NONE HTC DEVICES.
This forum has started to developt WinMo and during that time HTC were first manufucturer of such device. However this forum became so famous in last 8-10 years so that when you type anything WinMo related word in Google or any other search engine it leads you at least few times back to this forum. So with Such search engine power many old and new brilliant people come here to meet and share their knowledge. With Such knowledge base and information the searchengine crawlers are as I believe the most band wide consumer.
Now been this site so famous and this site been only on HTC devices, gives actually VERY BIG Marketing advantage to the “Company HTC” As I believe over the years HTC owns some of their popularity to this forum but DOESN’T HAS TO PAY SINGLE CENTS. I mean many other companies paying hard cash to make their names and their products popular in the search engines so that consumers can find them easily.
Furthermore we all here given so much feedback on our Dream devices or find so many mistakes on the current device models so that HTC itself can learn and align them self for future devices or even make correction on next produced patch for devices that are still in production. Again all these are for free of charge and without making expensive surveys. I assure you for HTC it is a kind of Gold mine here.
I personally believe competition amount of the manufacturer can bring only advantage to the consumer. This is for price and for quality!!!
Therefore As I believe continuing supporting only HTC devices here in XDA_DEV gives HTC big advantage on the mentioned COMPETITION and hurt as Consumer!!!
Be frank I don’t believe on those sister forums or what so ever (again I don’t wanted insult anyone’s idea it is just my opinion)
my simple mathematic is:
A forum based of people…people brings Knowledge/information…Knowledge/information brings search engines…. Search engines bring people.
From my experiences building a forum and been successful (popular) is very very Long and hard job
Conclusion of above I would say we should Support here also none HTC devices

[Q] Question to Developers

I am currently a freshman in college studying Computer Science, as all you guys know, Freshman year is English, keyboarding,Math, etc. I can't wait to start learning languages and how to develop, so I am thinking about buying books of language so I can learn faster, my question is what would you guys recommend to get into developing faster, Java???Html?? thanks for answering, and if you guys know of any book that would help me learn , thanks a lot guys
i think if you're starting to learn to program at this age it's a little late
in any CompSci program you will most likely be exposed to at least one class of the major languages. java, c++ and visual basic will most likely be a part of it.
unless you attend Google U, Android wont likely be a language they teach you. but since, as I understand it, most android is based off linux and programmed in java, that should be your start!
good luck in college.

How do I become a DEV?

I was wondering what resources are out there to become a DEV and make my own ROM's. I have googled it a little bit and not really found anything worth while so far. I did run across a good book but its not going to be published for another 2 months. Does anyone know of any tutorials? Books? How to guides?
There are plenty of kitchens right here on xda. And remember when you search on google add on xda to whatever you are searching. I had a bunch of bookmarks for this but never backed them up. Sorry buddy.

I didn't think about using the term kitchen when searching. I will give that a shot. Thanks.

I would read google's documentation on Android, learn Linux commands, and also learn java. This is a good start. If you use kitchens, you are not dev'ing. After this, reading the cyanogen wiki will teach you some of the less "official" deving methods.
Edit:
Links
First go here and learn all of it. (weeks of hard work and dedication)

Then go to a local library and pick up a recently published book on java programming and learn it. (weeks of hard work)
Then learn all of this (more weeks of hard work)
http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html
Then learn all of this (more weeks of hardwork)

Finally get involved with Cyanogenmod

I said professional devs. The hobbyist devs on xda usually are doing it because they enjoy doing it and picked up the skills over the years. But it isn't any easier and that is why the behavior on the forums sometimes annoys them. As far as professional devs who work for a company like Samsung, they make between 50,000-100,000 a year.
As far as independent professional devs, Paper camera has sold over 1,000,000 apks at 2 dollars a pop, do the math.

I say make a couple of apps first and learn how Android works. Then move to themeing, then make kernels, then roms

Here's where I learned my skills, this determines on what you're trying to develop. Most roms here, with the exception of source builds don't require much actual programming experience since they are closed source, primarily they have small tweaks like de-odexing, XML mods, etc.
Hands-On | 90% - 90% of my skills have come from hands-on experience and learning as I go along. For example, say I'm writing an app for the very first time. (Don't start with an app unless you've practiced with the platforms language first) As I went along on my first app I learned an incredible amount about android developing by reading developer.android.com and SO as I went along and came across something I wasn't sure about. Ditto kernel development, years ago I started with no knowledge and then bam I'm half a pro . Also, I knew nothing about ASP.NET/MVC/C# about a month ago, now it's kinda fluid to me.
School(Computer Science) | 8% - Yeah, it costs all that money for 8% or less. There can be some unique challenges in a software program, but almost everything you do in school is either so off the wall simple or has no real world application. I also think they spend too much time teaching by the syntax of the language, when really you should group them. Syntax is *mostly* trivial, it's better to group languages. Example: learn the Object Oriented Style (Perl, PHP, C++, Java, C#) which should give you a decent foundation in all those languages. Then learn the Procedure-Oriented Style (C, PHP, Perl, Cobol, BASIC (eww)). Then learn the rising in popularity Functional-Style (F#, SQL (mostly, this ones an exception since you often won't write many SQL scripts save for basic queries), Erlang, Haskell, C#). Notice: I listed some languages in multiple categories as the styles of programming are concepts, and some languages support either concept.
Co-Workers | 2% - Sometimes you learn by asking a co-worker or another developer. It's not how I did it primarily, but I know others who work best and learn best working in a team.
So to recap:
If you're trying to learn software programming itself I suggest starting with common scripting languages which are very easy to learn (HTML, XML (this will help for android), PHP). Then move on to some OOP languages (Java (Android*), C++). Then if you plan on working with kernel source code you should work with C and familiarize yourself with the procedure oriented style. Java is by far the easiest first language to learn OOP because of the wide-range of libraries available (to do almost anything) and the JRE, which gives you a nice garbage collector so you don't have the worry of memory management and freeing objects manually like you do in C/C++, etc.
If you just want to bake a rom with minor adjustments or a closed-source rom, I suggest you learn how to create themes first, as many of those concepts will help in baking a rom. And if you have questions this is a development community last time I checked, although sometimes it doesn't seem like it. So ask questions, ask other developers (I used to get questions ), ask on the board (if you follow the rules), ask on StackOverflow, etc. Don't be a nuisance to other developers though, I had someone that constantly blew up my phone nonstop all hours of the day asking silly silly questions. I don't mind questions, but i'd be spending time with my GF and my phone would explode with 20 questions that I already answered 20 times each
Also, some books may not be bad if you have absolutely no idea about programming whatsoever. But nowadays, you can find anything in a book on the internet. The benefits of a book is they include all their source code (usually) and can motivate you more since they give you projects and challenges. I had one Java book, and it drove me crazy because nothing was standardized. Instead of using the Java HashMap methods, or the Java Stack methods they wrote their own APIs for everything it drove me crazy :O

My school must have a great compsci program because they focus on good programming styles and not syntax. There is no reason to start with any language besides java if your goal is to develop Android. And while I agree with your learning as you go approach, it would be a mistake and overwhelming imo for someone to jump into Android development without having a basic understanding of Linux, java, and Android. My advice given was for helping op to become an Android dev, not someone who posts roms. They are not always the same thing.

My schools good too I'm not saying its all syntax but its a lot of write your code readable in the professors style. I've learned more in 3 months on the job than 2 years of school. I've learned way more from self teaching tho.
And for app development Linux knowledge isn't really necessary since you can develop android apps on any platform, but Java and OOP styles is necessary knowledge.

Thank you for the link. I got lots of stuff to start reading through now. I also found this book: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/xda...7854?ean=9781119951384&itm=1&usri=android+rom
It should hopefully be a good one as well when its published.

It will be - I know the guys who've put it together.

I miss a "Omate Rise" smartwatch area and a "Xiaomi yi cams" area

Hey guys.
I own two "special" devices and I would be very happy if you can create two sections for it.
We had some areas for "Omate Truesmart" devices but not for the "Omate Rise" device with a round display.
I hope we can add this area becuase there are a lot of things I would like to talk about with other Omare Rise owners and because of the special case that the Omate rise is a standalone smartwatch with its own sim-modul and a android 5.1 based rom together with the special fact that it has round display, is would be very usefull to had an own area for such users.
Here is a user who wish the same section:

The other area I really wich is a for the xiaomi webcam devices.
They run linux on it and some clever users from 4pda create some special fimrware files to enable more features and make it possible to use the cheaper CN version in US or EU areas.
The different xiaomi cams are really great.
It is really nasty to translate russian language into englisch and grab the informations out of it. An area here at xda would be very usefull.
I hope to get some answers here and I hope this is the right way to ask for new areas.

There is actually a dedicated thread for device section requests,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660354
You can post there to have your requests seen, and I'll close this thread. :good:
