Okay, let's just say, in a completely theoretical question, does anyone know the hardware in these devices well enough to know if it's at all possible to upgrade RAM by replacing the stock chips with higher capacity chips? I'm just curious if the system would be set to a certain amount so that an increase wouldn't even be recognized, or if the chips were special in some sort of way that would prevent them from being swapped out or anything. The OS would certainly not care, but what about the actual hardware or system settings?

Interesting. Alright, thanks. I was just curious about the architecture of how the hardware worked in the devices. While I'm crazy enough to try such a thing (and fairly experienced in PCB work), I certainly have no intention of doing so until my device is past any type of warranty period. Even if I didn't screw anything up, I'd be screwed if anything else did screw up later.
The Dell Axim X50v and X51v (probably the non-vga versions also) can also be upgraded to 128mb RAM (vs 64mb stock).

I like to upgrade Universals to 128MB RAM.
Unfortunately I don't have access to 64MB rams usualy.
What I have a plenty of is: HYB25L256160AC and HYE25L256160AC 32MB ram chips which universal originaly contain.
There is a spare place for 4 RAM chips in universal, so why not to add these.
I haven't seen this discussed anywhere. I even don't know sure if the spare place is meant for RAM (but most probably).
I have very advance skills in BGA resoldering, so I'm able to experiment.
What I need is someone who understand it more and tell me first if it's possible to use 4 chips there and maybe someone know if there are some hardware updates in the pins around (short circuiting or resistor adding).
And don't hestitate to post some reply even if you are not sure if it's right....
I need some brainstorming here.

I don't think that those 2 extra "brackets" are for RAM, because i think they are smaller than the ram module. But if they where for RAM there are a lot of missing components at the bottom, capacitors, resistors... (closer to the Flash Disk), probably i'm wrong, because the picture can induce in error... but it's just a opinion...

Actually, it should be for RAM. It's smaller, you are right.
But, the size fits the original 32MB chips and the connection pins are on the right place.
The white frame which tells where the edges of chip should be is the size of the rams - actualy the bigger frame on empty place is same big as small one on the original rams.
In the worst case for me, it seems that htc wasn't sure which memories will use so they prepared 4 frames for differend type of memories. In this case it's most probable that they can't cooperate with the other ones. But I bet it's just prepared for another 2.
Did the service manual say something about it?
And about missing parts...it's just a few, I can add them in a few minutes.

I agree with you about the diferent types of ram used by htc maybe the brackets are there for precaution. I know that's quite easy to solder the components, but the main problem is to know the exact values of the resistors and the capacitors and the right place... or not if they were in the datasheet of ram

I now have a I-Mate JasJar and I love it!
However, it is a 64 mb unit and I am considering the upgrade!
So I wanted to ask everyone that has already done the upgrade if they think it was worth it?
Also I would like to know where you can see the improvment the most?
I like Nav n go Igo 8 navi program and my device clearly
does not have enough memory to run it properly, will it help to do the upgrade or is it so that the graphic card is not quiet up for the challenge to be able to show 3d terrain and everything else in Igo8?
So basicly I want some coments from you guys, what works after the upgrade and what does not work?
For me I am considering either to do the upgrade or to buy the Touch pro when it cames out, but the thing is that I like this device to much to sell it!
So is there any hope for it? Is it going to be as good as the rest of the devices that has more memory (like tytn II), or is it just not worth it?
Oh and buy the way, I do own a tytn II so I know all about the missing drivers and stuff, the fact that it has a gps is great but somehow I dont mind that my universal does not have gps becouse I have an external gps anyway and it is much better then the built in gps in tytn II!

You'll reach a stage whereby you cannot install programs even to the memory card because you'll face 'Storage Memory Low' error
I wonder whether it's possible to upgrade the ROM too say to 512MB?

Don't know if you are familiair with the memory of computers, but...
See the SD-card as the harddisk. That's clear.
See the ROM as memory that you cannot use for your own (exceptions are Flash and extended memory, but those are 'hard disks' too)
So, all 'hard disks' are used to store stuff onto. This can be programs, images, databases, whatever.
See the RAM as usable program memory (the RAM of your computer - might be 1Gb or 2Gb or 4Gb)
The 128MB is RAM, so only to be used as program memory, memory used while running programs.
Each program that is installed costs NO RAM, except when you (or the OS) run it. Drivers only consume program memory when they are loaded.
So, installing eg. a large game won't change anything to your RAM.
Most programs can be installed to SD. Only a few cannot. However, often can be tweaked (eg. Opera, Wisbar) to run from SD without any problem.
I would very much like to have 128MB too... I was under the impression that the store in Germany would not do this anymore (it is not on their web site)
So, CFDS, when you get the Universal back, please inform us of its state!

The Uni has 128 MB Flash ROM and 64 MB SDRAM. Similarly, the SAMSUNG SGH i900 has 256 MB Flash ROM and 128 MB SDRAM

The only shop I know of is this: http://www.srsgmbh.de/en/index1.html and I dont see that they can do the upgrade anywhere on their site!
I wrote them an email asking them if they can do it and what the cost will be, but so far I have not recieved any answer!

Ok, so you mean that if one does the RAM upgrade one will not get more PROGRAM MEMORY?
Please confirm this, it would really be shame to spend money on the upgrade only to not recieve any additional "program memory" which I think is equaly important!
I tought that by doing the upgrade it will be equalent to a Tytn II device both in "RAM" and in "program memory"! So please confirm this!

If you're the type who wants to install many programs then I think this amount is inadequate. The SONY EXPERIA X1 might be a good alternative giving 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM.

Ok I understand now, but is there a way of upgrading the storage memory as well or is it just possible to upgrade RAM?
Also does anyone know if 128 MB Ram is the limit or is it possible to upgrade even more, perhaps 256 MB?

I have do the 128Mb upgrade to my Uni. Was it worth it, well that depends, I think it was for me. You will not notice any big change in app loading speeds, but if you are running heavy weight app's like sat nav were you see lock ups or 'low resource' warnings them yes it is wroth it. It wont get you any more stroage space but it does give you more program running space.
Currently 128Mb is the max M-RAM that can be fitted to the Uni, I beleive due to ROM image limitations. The chips are also obsolite and can be hard to get hold of have a look at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_128_Shop for places that sell and upgrade. To do it yourself will require specialist equipment, so unless you know what is involved get it done for you.

If you are going to run Igo8 on your Uni then the answer to the question is YES, get the upgrade done.
Received my Qtek back today from its Ram upgrade...
86,5mb free of prog mem after reset...
Tried iGO8 on it...it used up to 65mb of prog memory but it ran very smooth...had all selected-3D building/terrain etc...
So far after 2X 30 min of usage/navigating I did not lost my 3D map...will see how it behaves when I use it for an 2.5hrs/250km trip...

Having seen the various fixes used for the lag issue I was wondering whether it would be possible to set-up some kind of a raid arrangement (e.g. stripe) that would accelerate things even further. E.g. we could create two physical partitions (one on the internal and one on the external sd) and use them in a RAID arrangement.
Just imagine the performance (plus the geekness benefit of having a Raid arrangement in your phone )
Any ideas? Do you think it would be possible?

Sounds cool and it is worth a try!
But... stripe raid works best when both devices are the same. In this case, we would have:
Internal SD Card: Low latency, medium throughput.
External SD Card (Class 6+): High latency, high throughput.
Stripe raid would give us the worst of both, ie. High latency, medium throughput. Probably...
Still worth a shot if anyone can manage to compile a kernel with all the software raid stuff!

It is very much possible - your phone is a linux compter, and it can do anything a linux compter could do. It just has to be done and tools have to be made...

I think you are exaggerating by saying "Anything". Android has limitations.
Anyway, Does Android have any sort of built in raid-management? I have never used raid, but from what I recall you need some sort of raid controller, hardware or software.
I would suspect that Linux will have some open source raid software..

after upgarde from GB to JB (either LEAK / Official), JB seemed Slow. whether to change the partitions on a flash PIT file MB2 / 4 can increase the RAM capacity in JB.
I found a thread where we can change it by using the application PIT "PIT_Magic".
but I do not understand how its use. if anyone can to using it please share...

You cant do that!there is about 140MB unused ram in stock firmware. in order to increase ram and use full of it ,you sould have uncompiled kernel source and know android kernel programming and change it.
but always you can change your phone partition sizes through PIT Magic while falshing.

Our device doesn't have true ram? I thought that we have some sort of LDDR2 ram and it's quite different from it's flash NAND.
I think you can't go over installed 768 mb and you can't even reach this number because gpu also use the same ram.
I hope Samsung didn't put the ram on storage because it will wear out like hell. NAND it's not fast, not even prone to multiple write cycles.
Even if you're successful in increasing you ram, you will make something like swap partition on linux. But I highly doubt it will work.
Swap system is not used on mobile devices because NAND wears up too fast.

I thought this was a joke at first when rozyid said we can increase our RAM
so it was 601MB system + 302MB cache + 1,2GB data + 1,1GB usb = ~3,2GB
It will make sense if the remaining is our "RAM"
if somehow someone able to increase this by resizing other partition (/cache maybe?) it would be really nice
And btw, what is the function of /cache? When I checked it using link2sd it wasn't used
But hey, didn't we used another partition /preload in JB? If I'm not wrong it was about 200MB, right? So then it be more than 4GB if we add it to previous calculation

S3 mini RAM score is only 10% faster in antutu, either S3 mini doesn't have true RAM or our device has one.
I think you've added up incorrectly here. 4GB is usually 3.7gb total.
Also, if you looked in the PDF's from one of the links above, you would notice we do in fact have LP-DDR2 ram...

I was very confused when you wrote this. It's absolute non-sense to use NAND as RAM. It will wear in only one month.
They should have at least the most creepy ram, cache or something else that it can be re-writable.
You can have smooth gui with no RAM installed. It's impossible. You can't draw 20000 triangles per frame and having decent framerates without having a ram that it's capable of speed near 1 Gb/s ...
Also usually memory came in banks, 256 Mb banks were usual in the past, so puting 3 banks can give you 768 MB.

I would love that fact to be truth, but this diagram is not hardware schematic. It is logical diagram how things push data between elements. Move couple pages further and try to find element for LP-DDR2 on PCB. I did not found one. Also in document 05-GT-I8160-EPLIS-11.pdf you have the list of electrical parts. I did not found SEC Code for anything that could be LP-DDR2.

Take a look at PCB in 08-GT-I8160-TSHOO-7.pdf. There are no 3 ram chips there. In fact there is only one 4GB. If they used emmc as a RAM, it won't die in one month. Probably it last for 2 years or more ... after warranty it may die.
In my PC, SSD disk is used as TEMP and cache memory for last 2 years. Still running flawlessly. Every ROM chip has some space left for spare blocks to be used as a replacement for died blocks.

Take a look at PCB in 08-GT-I8160-TSHOO-7.pdf. There are no 3 ram chips there. In fact there is only one 4GB. If they used emmc as a RAM, it won't die in one month. Probably it last for 2 years or more ... after warranty it may die.
In my PC, SSD disk is used as TEMP and cache memory for last 2 years. Still running flawlessly. Every ROM chip has some space left for spare blocks to be used as a replacement for died blocks.

Anyone bothered to look through the documentation?
If you check 08-GT-I8160-TSHOO-7.pdf on the first page you can see the block diagram and there you can see stated LP-DDR2.
Check the attached picture.
If same chip is being used as RAM, then what is the benefit of moving data from on part of same memory to another? Won't that reduce io speed, cos I thought the purpose of RAM is to speed up data access for CPU from normally slower data storage eg. Hard drive.
