MDA3 Instability - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi Guys
well, ive had my MDA 3 for a few months now and am pretty much very happy with it. As always though with new "toys" the honeymoon period is over and I'm starting to notice more n more bugs, things like the backlight randomly defaulting to almost off and occasional lock-ups etc.
Now, being in the IT industry I know the first step to solving an issue(s) is to patch up to the latest drivers/OS fixes etc. With this in mind and the specs below, can I? Should I? Would I even want to?
Windows mobile 2003 Second Edition Version 4.21.1088 (build 14132)
Rom 1.06.00 ENG
Date 08/05/04
Radio 1.00.00
Protocol 1337.30
ExtRom 1.06.17 WWE
Hardware (maybe this is standard to all ?DA3/II?)
Intel PXA263
400 Mhz
Ram 128
Flash 32
Flash chip 28f128k3
Device Info
Platform PocketPC
Model No. PH20B
Imei mylittlesecretthankyouverymuch
What ya think guys? If so, any hints as to what I'm looking for and where I would get it? Newsgroups? Telnet servers?
Not sure if this makes a diference but, it was originaly T-Mobile UK, now its unlocked and on Pay-As-You-Go T-Mobile Germany.
Many thanks in advance!

hmmm, im not sure, cant remember but i think that settings will be saved!
I have a Jasjar, which was running:
ROM version 1.13.53 WWE
Radio version 1.03.01
ExtROM version 1.13.137 WWE
I ran the radio-only upgrade, which errored the first time but ran without problem the second time. After a soft reset, I now have:
ROM version 1.13.53 WWE
Radio version 1.04.02
ExtROM version 1.13.137 WWE
All my settings/hacks were retained and no information was lost. The radio appears to be stable.
Hi, Sorry... im posting a newbie question... please ignore if "beneath" you...
Im confused on the "radio" upgrade thing. I mean, is this really the radio that we know of (FM/AM)? Why the need for upgrade? How do i make the radio work then?
Laugh all you want, read all your posts and i still dont get it.
The "radio" portion of the Jasjar is the phone/gprs componentry. The rest of the Jasjar is the PDA componentry. Because, theoretically at least, WM5 products can be PDA-only and because the radio portion of WM5 products can vary widely (differing standards for various parts of the world), the firmware is released in two parts: the base operating system for the PDA and the radio subsystem addition for the phone/gprs functions. This explanation is somewhat broad, and not 100% accurate, but hopefully provides some clarification.
can i use this to update my orange spv m5000? or is there another version for it..\
cheers
ok i've tried several times now and its not working.....
its not working for my spv m5000 either

Thanks for the explanation.. that was tech101 for me I get it now.. It's the "phone" part then.. upgrading the radio might have something to do with connecting wifi, bt etc... and i really though i could tune in to my favorite radio station.. haha
Thanks a heap!

You are welcome. BTW, something like this http://www.dealsonic.com/csdsedifmstr.html would add AM-FM capability to a Jasjar if WM5 drivers are available. Note though that it would seriously truncate battery life.
FYI, the SD-Radio is the older model.
Take a look at the sleeker SD-Radio2...

Benefit of Radio 1.04 over 1.03?
Just got my i-mate jasjar. Wondering about upgrades but it seems to work and if it aint broke, dont fix it!!
For those who have flashed from 1.03 to 1.04, what improvements were there?
Thanx
I just updated my 1.03.00 to 1.04.10 on my Qtek 9000
The biggest improvement is the time from hitting the 'pick-up' button to the connection being established. On the older version, this took about 5-7 seconds.... on new version, this happens instantly.
Maybe it's just me, but i think the sound quality of the phonecall is improved too.
Post deleted as I managed to upgrade the radio stack successfully to 1.04.10
cheers guys

[NEW] - Orange ROM w/Radio 1.13.00_UNI (25/08/06)

Found on buzzdev.net
http://buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=59&func=view&id=24437&catid=40 8)
does anyone know new ROM from Orange release 25 August 06.....??
any link....??
Here we go with this new - ROM -
http://www.business.orange.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Business&c=OUKPage&cid=1142943309969
I understand that upgrades to radio 1.13, but what's about the rest of the version, i mean rom and so on?
thanks.
I'd also want to know what is new in this ROM aside from the radio. Does this ROM have both AKU2 and A2DP support?
Does upgrading to 1.13 on the radio make much of a difference?
In an area where I used to get a 5 bar signal strength on the alpine with radio 1.04 I now get a 2 bar signal with the Universal and my wife complains bitterly that the sound breaks up whilst I'm talking to her...

It is hard to answer your question because different radio versions have different performances on different locations. So you basically have to try it yourself to determine if this will improve the quality of your calls in your area. The most important thing to know is you will not loose your current settings or programs installed as long as you ONLY UPGRADE THE RADIO VERSION AND STAY AWAY FROM UPGRADING THE REST OF THE ROM.
Thanks will give it a whirl - iirc its a case of deleting the nk.nbf and ms_.nbf files out of the upgrade?

Yes, and using the Ma_Upgarde_No_ID Tool to install it. I'll probably try and install it too myself today.
I think it's time that some informed people start telling the rest of us what's changing from version to the following: personal impressions on perfomance are often contraddictory, many are downgrading after upgrading. What's going on?
Gah now I'm annoyed.
I applied just the radio update and at the end when it told me to do a cold start I did just a normal soft reset, fingers well away from the keyboard. It starts to boot and I notice from the splash screen that it's QVGA instead of VGA as I expect. I think "Oh OK I just need to run ozVGA again it's just got reset by the update" - all of a sudden it tells me to "Tap the screen to begin using Windows"
Not amused.
Fortunately I kept a backup but that's really annoyed me.

excuse my ignorance (cause it's really buggin me too! ) but how do you backup the EXEC? on previous PPC's there was a backup to falsh utility. all i've seen are references to backing up 'my documents'. i would like to have a full backup like i used to get.
any help appreciated.
nevermind "Spb backup" it is!
hi gquipster
did you see any difference in the radio upgrade??
i am also having a little reception difficulty with radio 1.09 sometimes 5 bars and couple of minutes later in the same location no reception so any feedback will be appreciated. thanks
Backups:
When I say a backup what I meant is that all the cab files etc that I use are all stored on the SD card so it was just a case of rerunning them rather than having to dig them all out. Also all my files are kept on my SD card as well.
I see they've removed the backup option from ActiveSync 4.2 anyone know why that would be?
Radio 1.13:
Well I haven't really noticed much difference in the signal strength indicator on the screen but call quality whilst sat at my desk seems the same - perhaps slightly better. It does seem to be answering calls marginally quicker but that could be wishful thinking.
Real test will be as I drive home this evening, several areas where the phone broke up yesterday where my Alpine didn't so see how the new Radio performs there.
I actually didn't use the no_id upgrade tool I re-encoded the radio_.nbf file changing the operator id to O2 and then used the ROMUpgradeUt.exe etc from the last official O2 update just with the nk.nbf and ms_.nbf files removed. Maybe that's why it hard reset my phone? Not entirely sure.
Anyway if there is anyone with a debugger/decompiler/whatever who can analyse exactly what the changes between Radio 1.09/1.11 and 1.13 are I'd be very interested, I'm wondering if it's actually the same update just with a different version number depending upon the service provider!!!
G
Did someone above mention that this rom makes the screen qvga? I would be interested in that, as long as it doesn't screw up my phone software (like it does with ozVGA). Just to get a clear picture, how good is this upgrade, if anyone has anything to offer from experience, when compared with Imate JJ 1.30.82 WWE and 1.09.00 (radio) I am using on my universal (O2 xda exec).
i applied the radio rom to the qtek rom. no problems - no qvga
Device Information :
Operator version : 7.130.1.174 <---- NEW info...What it is..?
ROM Version : 1.30.90 WWE
ROM date : 02/24/06
Radio version : 1.13.00
Protocol version : 42.47.P8
ExtROM version : 1.30.174 WWE
OS 5.1.195 (Build 14847.2.0.0) ----> AKU 2.0 (nothing new)
i think this is same with previous orange ROM, the new one ONLY Radio 1.13.00 updated, and have NO issue with new radio, everything seem OK..!
will be revert back to AKU3.2_Ivan and keep this radio...
I got QVGA cos I think I fscked up the update and it ended up cold booting my system. Haven't yet looked at exactly what I did wrong yet, might do if I get a chance after work this evening.
My current config now is:
ROM Version: 1.30.107 WWE
ROM Date: 04/11/06
Radio Version: 1.13.00
Protocol Version: 42.47.P8
ExtROM Version: 1.30.162 WWE
OS 5.1.195 (Build 14847.2.0.0)
Notice you have a different ExtROM version to me - what exactly is different do you know?
I'm off on holiday as of tomorrow so may not get much of a chance to reply for a week or so (depending upon how many emails I get in my work account by the time I get back!!!)
G
Is there A2DP support in this new ROM?
Radio 1.13
Seemed slightly better whilst driving home today my wife didn't complain about me breaking up as much but she did say that it still wasn't as good quality as the "that other gadgetty thing you used to have" (Alpine).
Also for the first time this evening it detected a 3G signal in my house (0 bars but it detected it!!!) for all of 5 minutes before switching back to a 5 bar GSM signal. Will try moving it nearer to a window and see if I can get the 3G signal back, but thats a definite improvement.
Anyway all subjective I'm afraid as I don't have the expertise and/or the tools to be able to do proper testing.
Still need to figure out exactly what I'm doing with cooking ROMs etc first...

Upgrade Advice

Hi,
Have been the owner of the M5000 for about 4 months and have a good relationship with it - well apart from being a little slow switching between portrait and landscape.
I dont have any issues with using it for PDA or phone calls.
But, looking at my device information:
Rom: 1.13.49 WWE
Radio: 1.03.0
ExtRom: 1.13.130 WWE
I think this is an old ROM.....
Have any of you upgraded from this ROM and noticed a big difference with your device? or is it best left as it is?
Sorry for a wishy washy question - but i dont want to potentially trash my device with upgrading if its not really worth it.
Thanks
Matt
hi,
i'm using 1.30.90 WWE rom and it's very stable but i saw that Orange has released a new Rom and Radio upgrade a few weeks back so i guess if you want to, just get those. I'ts meant to provide support for push e-mail. Just be sure that you have Bootloader 1.00 or above.

How to upgrade Radio only

I'm a newbie and I've recently upgraded my HTC Cingular 8525 to the following =>
ROM = WM6.1 Touch Build 20924 V2.7
HardSPL = Ver 7
Image = Hard-SPL-2.10
IPL = 1.04 (G3 Series phone)
SPL = 2.10.01ipro
Operator version: PDAViet.net
ROM version: DVH_V27_BS
ROM date: 10/30/08co3.62.DVH.V27
Radio version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol version: 32.53.7018.01H
ExtROM version: Black(Full)
HTC Hermes: HERM100
CPU: Samsung 2442A
Speed: 400 MHz
Ram size: 64MB
Flash size: 128 MB
Data bus: 32 bits
Storage size: 67.41 MB
This ROM seems to work great and is very stable and I've noticed a
dramatic improvement in my battery life and faster boot times.
I want to easily upgrade the Radio to a more recent Radio than 1.16.
What is the method of upgrading just the Radio to a recent stable Radio?
What version of the HTC Wizard Radios are recommended? I have seen
a number of posts that indicate users have Radio Version 1.47 and some
with later Radio versions. What are the advantages / risks involved in
a Radio upgrade? I assume that a newer Radio would be able to get
a better 3G signal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - John
For starters the wizard isnt a 3g phone so you wont get a better 3g signal and seeing as you have actually got a hermes if you tried flashing a wizard radio you will turn your nice cool little ppc into a paperweight SO DONT EVEN TRY FLASHING A WIZARD RADIO
Anyway radios are high risk for flashing so think carefully before upgrading the radio , you need to consider the pro's and cons of actually upgrading it.
Do you have loss of signal, keep getting disconnected or calls failing to dial, if not then why change the radio.
I am not trying to scaremonger here, but flashing just roms that have no radio is reasonably safe as 99% of the time, errors can be corrected quite easily, when a radio goes wrong it can be a completely different ball game.
Anyway if that hasnt scared you SH**less ,I have personally found that radio 1.47 is the best in my wizard, but i am in the uk and i actually have a wizard and a hermes and an orbit?
To upgrade the radio you just follow the same procedure you do with upgrading a rom ,except of course it is only the radio that is being upgraded and you dont need to reinstall everything afterwards. The O.S. is left exactly the same as before the flash.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET A HERMES RADIO if you do want to try flashing a new radio
Sources for Hermes Radio ROM Upgrades
Thanks for your reply. I was hoping for a slightly better signal in marginal reception regions and I had heard that the newer Radios have better reception.
Also with regard to Hermes Radio ROM upgrades - any suggestion on
where to find the 1.47 Hermes Radio ROM that I can upgrade?
Thanks in advance - John
If i was you i would seriously read the wiki here under hermes after you have read some of that i would try one of these that are found here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
remember what i said though there is a greater risk of bricking your device flashing a radio

[Q] O2 Xda Orbit update problems

Hi,
Just bought an unused O2 Xda Orbit off eBay, works fine with my Tesco Sim card, except won't connect to the update server, even using wi-fi, but that not the major issue.
I've read so many different threads about using 4GB Micro SDHC cards, I've tried updating the ROM more times than I can remember.
I'm running windows 7 Enterprise so had to install Windows XP Mode etc., but I keep getting told that the update utility I'm using needs to be newer.
What I've got atm.
ROM Version 3.4.206.2 WWE
ROM Date 4/18/07
Radio Version 02.67.90
Protocol Version 4.1.13.28
ExtROM version 3.4.206.101
Windows Mobile 6 Professional
CE OS 5.2.1238 (Build 17745.0.2.3)
The Update utility I've got, with any ROM update I've found, (although Artemis Touch 4.02 is the one I've still got), is version is 3.6.3.0.
Can anybody point me in the right direction please.
I will buy a 2GB SD card as an interim measure, but once I've put Co-Pilot 8 on that there won't be much room left. If someone has found a better sat-nav program that works on the Xda Orbit, only need UK & Ireland really, but Europe will do, I'm happy to take suggestions.
PC's I can fix with my eyes closed, but I'm a bit lost with this.
Thanks in advance from an old sad git
