DOC upgrading?! - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

The last reports about the left storage capacity on the DOC in the universal
pushed me to ask this question to the hardware techy in here.
Universal has the :
" DiskOnChip G3 FBGA 128MB MLC, 130nm" in which is not enough for power users.
Can we solder a bigger one instead and clone what's inside it lets say the 256 M.B,512M.B, or maybe the 1G.B ?
Technicaly I assume it's possible..
M-Systems
Plz I know we can install on the Storage card, but it's not the issue here.
My curiosity would help the Himalaya and Blueangel users even the Universal which uses the Magneto or any device that contains the DOC onboard.
Thank you in advance.

Meeting with HTC

Hi all
i'm an engineer doing R&D for Leaf Wireless in South Africa. We supply wireless solutions and HTC phones to Africa.
i'm going to Taiwan to meet and recieve training from the HTC engineers from monday the 12th. And since i've received so much help from XDA developers in the past i thought i'd offer.
if there are any customisation questions you have or HTC issues that are proving difficult to solve post them here. i'll ask the guys when i get there and try get some answers.
cheers,
Greg
hmm this thread sounds like it could take off.
i dont think you know what you got yourself into supaspud. i know lots of people are going to have questions and suggestions for htc.
i for one would like to see them implement a wheel mouse not unlike the one in the danger sidekick 3. that would make wm experience 100 times better.
also ask if crossbow will officially be released as an upgrade for the wizard.
when i think of more questions or suggestions ill reply again
?Why don't they make a full size (3.5" or whatever) screen in a cdma with more memory. Hell it doesn't even have to be vga. I use mine as a pda, if I wanted a tiny screen, I'd just get a damn phone.

Save yourself the bother. It would be up to the telco's to decide on releasing an official update and they would then pay HTC to build the rom. Expect that to happen about the same time as the telco's decide to donate all their profits to third world charities.
It's not a telco thing. If you are refering to the companies who re-brand the HTC machines (most of whom are not telcos) the decision will be based mostly on whether HTC will actually supply the ROM and at what cost if any. They would have a fairly good idea about what they are going to do for some machines as they own one such company that retails their machines (Dopod). Find out about possibility of Artemis crossbow ROM if you can
Linux
It would be interesting to get their opinion on Linux on the HTC platform, and whether they would consider contributing to the development of a well rounded Linux based phone environment.
Yes, their opinion on linux would be good to know
Ask if they have any future plans to support it officially.
Ask them what (apart from soldering the chips on and editing the rom file for memory alocation) needs to be done to make 128mb of ram work on UNIVERSAL (it origionally had it, so the motherboard supports it and it can work
Hello Leaf Wireless
Well, well Greg, I thought that Leaf would not come out of the closet.
I have been the source of information till now, but now please take the stage.
A few months back I introduced a few of your staff to the XDA site.
I am now and then fed tit bits of information which I share on the forum. The ROM 1.35 update is a good example.
There are some clever guys here and we can all all learn together.
The problems I raised with Renier was:
1. Storage card getting lost in Media Player
2. Windows 5 is full of unresloved problems, with the BT stack poor.
3. Battery life on 3G is shocking. I have upgraded to 1.27 to see if things improve.
4. I have an Email from Dan Mackie @HTC Eupope stating that an Major ROM upgrade would be released at the end of January 2007, "to resolve all known issues on the TyTN". Nothing has happened yet!
The issue with the storage card was a known issue and I was informed at the end of September that it would be sorted with the next upgrade.
It hasn't happened yet but I have noticed that the TyTN's that you have received do not have this problem.
Please feel free to contact me should you wish.
Enjoy the trip and let me have a copy of the new ROM before you leave.
Regards
A wish list would be for the keyboard have some kind of a lock to prevent it opening when retrieving from the pouch. I find that I often drop call on closing the keyboard.
The magnets in the pouch are also troublesome and cause screen rotation and also dropped calls at times when rotating back.
GPS in the Hermes
What component of software (hardware??) is missing in the Tytn compared to the Trinity to make the GPS work.
Thanks
Francisco
PS. My first post, and I would like to thanks all the excellent XDA-developers community for this great forum.
@SupaSpud: Tell them to produce a Hermes with VGA screen and GPS and 256Mb ROM, RAM....
Thanks.

Several people have already asked this question:
- How can we install 128Mb RAM on Universal?
HTC never replied.
sheesh...
wow... looks like I opened up pandora's box. i'm making a list of all the queries and i'll ask them on monday. keep em coming...
ps: i'll find out bout the rom now.
Hey SSpud - gr8 offer !
1. I''d like you to ask why they dont set the default Bluetooth (a2dp) to Stereo (and the bit rate / max bit rate to 40+) ... and generally fix stereo BT.
2. How do they acvtually work with customers (eg BT in the UK) .... I get the inpression they are extremely slow and unresponsive.
2. Camera - if even cheap sony ericons can have autofocus and macro settings why cant HTC ?
3. Stereo Jacks (3.5 or 2.5mm)
4. Direct access to microSD card
5. When will they update their FAQ's and trouble shooting guides beyond the patronising " check that it is turned on type " answers.
Thanks for this oportunity !!
(I'm especially intersted efor Artemis/ XDA orbit)
Hello 'Spud,
Apart from sorting/mentioning the listed problems here - especially the poor bluetooth stack IMO - please do bump the question regarding their future GPS roadmap for TyTN/Hermes series of phones.
Now that will make a true convergence of technologies.
Kind regards,
Mine is a small and trivial request... could they please please please fix the battery meter on the hermes... the [email protected] +/- 10% drives me nuts... wish we could get the +/- 1% like the other devices.

Tell the guys at HTC to watch the XDA-Developers site to find out what's wrong with their phones and what features are needed to turn them into great devices - remember the IPhone is comming!
Basil
Tell them not to save cents in devices that cost hundred of dollars. For instance they use cheap and weak cpus like samsung (which has only ARMv4T) ot OMAP with it's low clock frequencies. Or they save memory and instead of using 128MB or more RAM! RAM is cheap! I'd like to see smaller touchscreen displays with VGA resolution! Look at the size and resolution of some nokias: E60 or E70. I'd like to see hermes (device with foldable keyboard) with gps, 624MHz intel cpu, 128MB RAM and 2.2 inch touchscreen in the near future!
YES! Tell them about this forum! Tell them not to do stupid things in locking their devices - this simply reduces their markets!
And tell them that maybe it is about time to see their x86 UMPC! Look at the sony vaio UX180P or UX280P!

I'm not exactly sure of what you mean about the wheel mouse. You mean like the one the Artemis has?
As for crossbow going onto the Wizard... i don't think that'll happen. But i'll double check.

I can't say too much, but if the rumour I heard is true, you might get something like that in the second half of this year. *wink-wink, nudge-nudge*

Let us show HTC, that we want support for SDHC microSD-cards > 2 GB!

In the near future bigger cards than 2 GB will be necessary. So let HTC know, we want a firmware update for those SDHC cards for the P3300!
So contact
http://www.europe.htc.com/de/htcp3300/support/csbyemail.html
(The IMEI-field would accept '---' as well!)
and ask them for a SDHC firmware update! I myself have already done it.
e-mail sent!
I have sent a similar e-mail and think it's a good idea!
already written .
upupup..........
it may not be a software issue at all
it could be a hardware limitation of the sd cntrl

Dear sirs,
I am quite pleased with my P3300, except for one point: the SD card capacity is too little for modern use. I've been told that this is not a hardware issue. Please issue some kind of software path, so the almost perfect P3300 will work with topical flash memory cards.

Paul Guijt

I often read, that it should work! Look at all those digicams: Update no problem! And the P3300 is not that old.
Sent an email too. Would be nice to kick an 8Gig card in and forget about the ipod.
I also sent an email....
ditto
Ditto -sent email
Great idea, I just sent my email and would incourage others to do the same, let's keep this thread active and up at the top. If the problem is indeed software related, a patch would be nice
Hi guys,
I have found a driver that supports sdhc cards on an Eten phone.
Do you guy's think this could also work on the artemis??
I have installed the driver on my mda compact 3 and nothing went wrong.
I can still read my 1gb microsd card.
My probleem is that i don’t have a sdhc card to test this driver?
Can somebody test this for us?
http://eten-users.eu/index.php?showtopic=9410&st=45
Hi
I think there is no big chance to run in P3300 because the eten x500 and the P3600 use another type of cpu (Samsung SC32442). But i'll give it a try.

Universal 128MB RAM upgrade UK

im looking for someone to upgrade my htc to 128Mb
Best rgds
Hi tsebol12
I've just spoken to retronix www.retronix.com about this procedure. They quoted me £50 for the labour and £15 each for the 2 ram chips - total cost £80. A bit of a bargain I would say.
Kind regards,
Jon Pyle
.........
Anyone done this yet?
Please, anyone upgraded in the UK yet? How did it go?
anybody know how to do it in indonesia?
Can i use the ram from HTC Himalaya??
By RAM do you mean SYSTEM RAM or some form of FLASH RAM?

Replacing RAM on HTC Wizard
Hi, I'm very interested in upgrading the RAM on my MDA Vario but needs some info first:
1. What are the chip numbers and chip make on existing 64Mb RAM systems (I don't want to take mine apart just yet).
2. How is the chip connected, e.g. does it have legs or is it using ball grid array (BGA) i.e. no legs are visible.
3. Can someone post a high detail photo of chips on board please so I can see how awkward it is to get at?
I have the skills to replace surface mount devices myself, if I know the original chip details I may be able to track down suitable 128Mb configuration.
Thanks

Welcome to forums
Universal does not means all devices!
In fact is a model
Please enter to the wizard section
Good luck,
Are memory chips from other devices any good?
I have an XDA II (HTC Andes, HTC Himalaya) with 128mb of RAM lying around. Is there any possible way one could use its memory chips to upgrade the Universal, and then put back the two 32mb chips back into the XDA II ?
Bump for this thread
I'm going to call Retronix to ask about this upgrade however i need to know what i'm asking them
Do i ask them about upgrading my O2 xDA Exec from 64mb to 128mb or am i asking about a type of upgrade? (i.e. BGA Reballing etc)
Can anyone help with this?
I am not allowed to post links, so decrypt that: look for ppctechs in the www, its a com domain. The Path on the Server is 'HTC-Universal_439/upgrades/64MB-to-128MB-Internal-RAM-Upgrade_1051-370.htm'.
They say it is BGA, and refer to that Forum as a base resource.
Am i right?
The upgrade is very expensive. I'd rather buy a new phone.

Would anyone be interested in an iPAQ H5450 for ROM development?

Hey,
I have 3 iPAQ 5450's sitting here, and I could probably spare one for development if anyone would actually be interested in it. Note that I only have one working cradle at the moment (might be able to get another if serious inquiries are made).
I'm fairly annoyed with a few aspects of WM2003, as I'm used to my HTC Herald (T-Mobile Wing). Simple things like no task manager like in WM5/6 (can't remember which is on the Herald), the the tray half-way working like I think it should, etc.
Here are the specs on the unit (shamelessly copy-pasted):
Processor: Intel XScale PXA250 400 MHz (I think this is actually faster than the Herald's OMAP 300MHz?)

By the way, I just tried to edit this message, and have to wait just to edit? I'm not posting a new post or thread, so why does it make me wait?? Could I get my account reviewed and whatever flag set? The account might not be used a whole lot, but I've been registered since 5/28/09!!
Hi,
- Can you dump the rom of your device like here: http://www.a701.org/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=465 ?
Regards, ansar.
I might be able to do that... Would the ROM from BootBlaster (URL wont work, "To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed." -- I've had the account over a YEAR now!!) work? I already have two of those as I tried Familiar (OPIE)
Hi,
Dump the three .raw files i.e. part00.raw, part01.raw, part02.raw (and /or part03.raw may be not needed if it is your storage card)
Then zip/rar them, upload to rapidshare and when logged in xda send me a private post with the link (in text mode).
If you already have the last hp rom upgrade file, if not download it, and upload this too.
Regards, ansar.
I'm not sure exactly where to get the utilities that are listed in the Mio thread you linked to. There were no links in the thread.
From what I understand, BootBlaster saves gzipped images of several areas: Boot, root, and [something else]. I already know how to use bootblaster, dd, and gzip. Hopefully it will have the information you need.
As far as uploading the HP WM2003 upgrade, I'm not too sure if I'm supposed to do that or not, as it is a paid upgrade? It is what is installed on all 3 devices, so I guess if someone will be getting the extra they might need it
WM5/6 needs at least 64MB ROM.
And porting device from WM2003 to WM5/6 is not an easy thing.
In past only 2 or 3 hTC phones did get custom ROM update from WM2003 to WM5/6.
I would suggest you to sell those iPAQs and buy something newer.
Doesn't really *have* to be a full upgrade to WM5/6... if there are ways to get some of the same functions over, I'd be happy. But WM5/6 would be kinda nice (though probably would be bloated).
One fo the other reasons not to just toss these units is that they are actually more powerful than some, if not most, of the cellphones being sold in the US right now. Hell, my Wing isn't *that* old... and it only has a 200MHz CPU. These iPAQs have double the CPU power. They might not have the greatest amount of memory, but if I'm right, the bootloader installed by bootblaster supports booting from a CF/SD. So the flash memory may not be an issue. (Not to mention that the filestore on the iPAQ will actually go poof if the main/backup batteries die, so sd/cf might be a better overall option).
You can't really compare 400MHz CPU made in 2002 and 200MHz CPU made in 2005.
If iPAQ CPU does have more MHz it dosen't mean it's faster.
BootBlaster is for Linux and Windows Mobile CAN'T boot from SD/CF card.
Not even to mention that iPAQ does have slow NOR-flash, instead of fast NAND-flash used in all new devices.
For point 1 & 2, that does make sense, but isn't there a standard to how MHz are measured? I guess I could see if there is a program to calculate the mips on both, though really mips isn't exactly perfect measurement either. But... the iPAQ actually runs many things I've much smoother than the Herald, which is why I assume that the iPAQ hardware may be a bit more robust. I could be wrong, as I'm a computer guy, not really handheld-savvy.
For 3, "Note that the Linux Bootloader will also boot PocketPC". Its just a bootloader. Much as GRUB will load linux and windows, the bootloader here seems to not care what it loads.
One thing I didn't know is that the bootloader couldn't boot from the SD/CF into another OS. I could swear I'd heard of someone doing so somewhere, though I can't find the page now. I figured the hald-held would have some form of BIOS, and that it perhaps could see the SD slot, similar to how a PC can boot from USB (or grub can as well).
Not sure how the NOR and NAND flash would affect it other than in read/write times. Again, this is something I'm pretty new to.
Anyhow, the point of my posting this thread was to see if anyone wanted to do some ROM work, perhaps some things could be used in WM2003 as well as WM5/6. I'm sure there are some things that could be done, and improvements made, with the machine, as it isn't 'bad' hardware. Granted, it's not a cell-phone, but more of a PDA with wireless and bluetooth capability. But it is something that can be made useful, instead of collecting dust in a closet, or perhaps an exhibit case I do have an old working Commodore 128D that is more an 'exhibit' than anything else... talk about a blast from the past!
I hate to see things set to the way-side just because there is something new and shiny out. Heck, I even re-purpose old-as-dirt PCs into useful things... I have a 500MHz BSD router that kicks the pants off any consumer router that costs $200+. I have another old 1.7GHz machine that acts as a CCTV/DVR. So it is natural for me to find useful things to do with the old iPAQs. Doesn't help that the Herald eats batteries
So, if I can get the old dog to learn some new tricks... it would be nice. I'm just trying to see if there is someone out there that knows *how* to teach the thing some new tricks.
What I want to say to you is that most likely no one will do any ROM cooking for h5450, WM2003 ROM modification was to hard for most users and never got any easy-to-use tools. Questions like yours pop up from time to time and no one has made any progress so far.
I cook ROMs for hx4700 and hx2000 series iPAQs they come from 2004 and 2005. Keeping them up-to-date with WM6.5 ROMs now was only possible because they did receive WM5 update.
ps not all old dogs can learn new tricks.
So I guess I'm kicking a dead dog? Wish there was a way to get WM5/6 on these things then... I wonder how much RAM the cellphone drivers/software use... if it is enough to get it below 48MB (tall order)... but yeah, I'll shaddup now
Duplicated post, delete me
From other side, I've heard that some ipaqs on the very beggining were sold with PPC Phone Edition OS (when you insert sim card to this "non working" slot under battery, you'll see gsm icon). If somebody has got such, and can post a rom dump (using bootblaster) to me, i'll be grateful.
Why?
I found a prototype motherboard, probably from iPaq h56xx (h5610), and it is to be identical to 54xx one, only rf module seems to be different.
Here is a thought.. Wonder if Android would run on these things...
Sent from my LG-VM670 using XDA
If you still have one to spare I would love developing a rom for it. If you can tell me what your looking for from the rom then I could work on one.
Yeah, still got 2 of these, could easily spare one. Right now the only things I've really been using the one for is a remote control for my TV. Lost my universal.
Would love to be able to get something going for it though. Something my kid could play with, perhaps a reader app. Just not sure if any exist for something as old as wm2003.
Right now the cash is tight, but once i get some to spare for shipping, I'll update ya, so you can tell me where to mail the thing.
Sent from my LG-VM670 using XDA
Is there a chance you could send one my way? I would love to work on and develope a rom for it!
Sure. Just need to get out of the financial nightmare I'm in so i can afford shipping.

I will foot the shipping bill for you no problem. Thank you so much for this opprotunity I have never developed for this device before. Where are you shipping it from? Send me a private message with any info you need from me and ill reply with my address and any of the info. Thanks again!
Let me know
Let me know how this goes as I have a h5450 and was looking for something to do with it as it is at me mothers and been on charge for some time lol as well if you have any stable runs I will test
