Hi Dreadlord,
In a nutshell, yes, it is possible to update your unit.
My personal recommendation to you is that you stay with what you have. Presently, there are few advantages that you, as an end user, would gain from an upgrade to WM5. Perhaps, it's just an appearance issue..?
To Upgrade a BA to WM5 requires some end user knowledge of the day to day running of the device and if you're having problems understanding the daily terms within posts here then you might end up damaging your BA.
Don't forget that these ROMS are not official releases. They are patched reverse engineered Operating Systems that still, at this stage, feature bugs & code issues. Granted they are getting better with each release and I strongly believe that one day they'll be a "plug & Play" version that people can just load and use..
This is why I presently am running the latest 1.42 WWE ROM for WM2003SE.. Yes, I have updated my BA to WM5 several times but I have always downgraded again to WM2003SE as so far as I rely on my BA too much for it to use [compared to WM2003SE] an unstable system.
Another thing is that the majority of users on this forum have all had to read the wiki on here and learn. There's very few people who are lucky enough to have this kind of information in their brains already. (Click the link in my Signature to start reading Wiki)
You might not get a good response from others on here if you reply in bold (or caps) stating that you don't understand things - It's not their fault you don't know..
Hope this helps..
Cheers!
Blah Blah.. etc etc.. Hehe
My previous post was my 100th - I'm an an old salt now.. hehe.. Apologies for not being around lately.. I've been in a different country!

id like this as well! i wonfer if it could be done
It could be done. I haven't seen it done, yet.

will the almighty vj maybe script something really quick to accomplish this?
I don't know a "quick script" way of achieving this, but think I know a roundabout way of doing it. However, it's not very quick and easy, so I'm not in a position to write it right now. But I would like to write it at some point, soonish.

I need some help with Windows Update

I have a Dell Axim x51v running the Windows Mobile 6 A01 RTM ROM developed by football. This does not include software for Windows Update. Where can I get this or can someone post a download. What should I do?
I could be wrong, but I don't think windows update actually does anything yet. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Yeah, I was under the same impression as you. I believe it was one of those MS features that was an after-thought and was never really implemented.
also ms updates often takes forever and would prob use alot! of credit on peoples gprs acounts and if disconnected in the middle would prob require a hardreset and......
and support for older versions of the os cost money too

True, but as the original poster mentioned, they are using an X51v. So GPRS is not an issue with that PDA as the poster would probably be connecting via wireless-b.
But I could definitely see the issue about a dropped connection leading to a hard-reset.
I realize that getting it may not be for the best, but I noticed that some 3rd party ROM's have this. is there any way I can get it?

Why border w/ it as it doesn't do you any good? I rather have it remove and use the rom space for something else.
i never heard about anybody who got anything from starting the program
it dont connect or get anything from ms
so if you really want it
guess somebody could make a gui that looks like it
have the same name and icon and you would be set

What to do with boring PDA2K

Hello everyone,
I've used my PDA2K on & off for the past 5 years but have always felt it's pretty much not worth the effort using it for anything serious. The net is slow and the general Windows 2003 SE operating system fragile, I reckon I've soft reset a thousand times since owning the unit. What advice can anyone give on how to improve it's capabilities & make it less boring to use, what change should I try. I'm not worried about frying the ROM as I only use this to surf the net nowadays & thats about it, just feel it's too good to bin but want to get something more out of it than I'm getting now.
Thanks any advice on possible software changes would be appreciated.
i would say...try win 6.5..no doubt you like that
regard stef
The PDA2K is still the best device if you need a mobile log typing unit. It's beacuse of the built in keyboard and the big portrait format screen (wich is the best if you have to to type in lists, contact data a.s.o.). This unique feature is the reason why I can't change my PPC.
Win 6.5 for me is not so important, there are few drawbacks compared to WM2003SE (no build in Excel encryption, less usable screen area (because of hotkeys), no direct menus in office applications.
install wm5, when you get bored install SPB Mobile Shell, when you get bored again change the color of the menu
seriously its quite nice app, have nice launcher etc... try it...
Thanks
Don't get me wrong I love it but just feel I'm missing something as I'm sure it's capable of so much more.
I'll take the advice and have a play with upgrading, do current 2003 apps such as my TomTom run on the upgrades. Even if not I think I'll give it a go anyway.
Thanks again for the replies
Yes it works on new WM version
I think he becomes unconfortable of the buggy WMG.S (or 6.5 we use other names cause Mycrosooft hunts us) you need to taste first WM6... then 6.1 his manilla 2D is great... and then G.S is beta but fine... try it all but men
follow everything step by step at upgrading please if you have any question ask here please.
Not so Boring now
Well + Que PPC and others,
I took your advice and upgraded and its a lot less boring.
I can't sync though, it tries but the an error message appears on BA moaning about a USB port not being available.
When I now turn on the BA I get a white screeb with start and a few icons at the top and Phone + Contacts at the bottom, clicking start takes me to a black screen with icons. If I soft reset I get the red/green/blue/white stripes while it resets.
Is all this normal or am I still stuck in bootloader, I'm new to all this so what I mean is could this be something I've not finished off correctly that is stopping me syncing now.
I don't mind fixing all the other problems once I can sync OK.

Heh tjpearson, you was searching for new use cases. I suggested to use your device more professionally. You decided to have an OS update. This way you decided the best use case for you is trouble shouting.
Seriously, I can't understand why OS upgrading is such an important thing on the BA. The benefits of the device lies in the big screen and the built in keyboard. If you search for a nice GUI take a iPhone.
No idea
Hiya pdahunter,
I have no idea what you mean or what your advising.
All I want is to surf and keep important notes plus store my gadget PDF manuals plus photography bumph.

The white screen cant be posible men... I will xplain you the new OS built..
If I can guess what you've upgrade... I mean I nedd to know wich ROM are you upgrade please provide the name or the link where you find it...
FIRST: The OS 2003 didnt has the soft buttons PHONE at left bottom and right at right bottom cause the new OS are designed for PDA phones that has buttons on that place... thats all... ok.
SECOND: you said that when you tap on start it tooks you to a black screen with icons i gueeeeeeees you have WM6.5 cause since WM2003 we had start cascade menu like windows XP or VISTA or Whatever... Thats normal on WM6.5 if you want the older start menu? just... downgrade a WM6 or 6.1 it has the older start menu.
THIRD:
If I soft reset I get the red/green/blue/white stripes while it resets.

Well the boot screen is hardcoded in roms so... is not an issue is normal we can only change the splashscreen...
known new features and pro's for a new ROM tooks its time men I mean new apps and programs are not supported with WM2003 so this is the very first pro of upgrading...
You are not stuck on bootloader or... are you on a black screen with Serial or USB upside and downside a version... it is BOOTLOADER not the RGB screen! ok?
if it cant boots and it cant pass trough the tricolor screen well seems you need to upgrade again maybe your batt was dead on middle process and it dont have enough batt to boot... but maybe you dont wait the time... or maybe you need reupgrade a rom...
Dont be so alarmed men your device is fine calm down you are not brick jejeje

1. I did not change nor delete anything here.
2. Again, why change the OS to a Version the device is not made for. The only reason I can see is a better system GUI or new applications with a better GUI. That's why I suggest to take a iPhone if this is important.
3. I'm frustrated because I'm realy interested in the technical benefits of WM6.x. Better WLAN Connection? Stereo Bluetooth? Some unique apps that doesn't run on wm2003?
But as soon somebody speaks about WM6 on the BA the focus changes to trouble shouting.
4. Why it's not helpful to say "Don't change the OS version if you search for better use cases!" ?

Have no idea of what I'm doing apart from trying to update my BA to surf the net faster, be better to use and so I don't have to soft reset every 2 minutes. This is my 1st attempt, if I've gone in too deep then tell me, I'll back grade to 2003 and start again with whatever you recommend.
You know your stuff so stay friendly, calm down and I can help you set up race suspension on a Yamaha R6 for the best cornering Or if you want advice on patching a Technomate Satellite box I'm your man.

Does this mean something?
maybe it will give you guys some ideas...
I guess there is a way to do this, but maybe need change some codes...
In the PSfreedom wiki I see a lot of devices compatibles yet, including Nokia, Palm and HTC phones.
We need a guy with the knowledge to make this port for the Kaiser, and here is the most probable place to find him!
Port kernel psfreedom on HTC Kaiser
Hello;
I also have a Kaiser with the Kaiser rom CyanogenMod 6 [RLS5.2] and kernel-kaisimg panel2-240x320-2.6.32-tilt-froyo-02-09-10_16.nbh.
But when I try to load the module with "insmod psfreedom.ko su", you get an error "insmod: can not insert 'psfredom.ko': invalid module format".
I wonder if someone could not compile a kernel with the module in order to load the module to the application.
a developer want to try?
How much of the source is device specific?
Very little is device specific, you basically need to implement two very small functions, the problem is getting these two functions to work!
[edit] How hard is it to port it to a new device ?
The device specific code is separated from the core so it’s quite easy, there are mainly two functions to write, one to get and one to set the USB address.. two other functions that only return some static result depending on the configuration of the controller (the name of the endpoints, and whether the controller supports high speed or full speed mode). The real problem is that some controllers can be tricky and may not work as you would expect...
Read the README file provided with PSFreedom, and check the psfreedom_machine.c file for specifics on what to implement.
[edit] How can I port it to a new device ?
First, you need to figure out what controller your device uses, in the case of the N900, it’s ‘musb’, you can use the ControllerList to help you, if it doesn't, then extend it!
Then go to the driver code for that controller (probably in drivers/usb/gadget) and look for ‘SET_ADDRESS’. In the case of musb, it was in drivers/usb/musb/musb_gadget_ep0.c. In there it was setting the address to the USB device, so just copy that code into the psfreedom_machine.c to allow setting the address, and add a similar function to be able to retreive the address.
Then add a function to return 0 or 1 depending on whether the controller supports HIGH, FULL or LOW speed mode (go to usb_gadget_register_driver for your controller, and in the first lines, it should validate the speed argument, it will tell you which ones are acceptable), set LOW speed mode to return TRUE only if FULL and HIGH speeds are both unavailable.
Finally, add a function to return the endpoint names.. it will usually be something like ‘epXin’ and ‘epXout’ (where X is the endpoint number), or “epXin-bulk”, etc.. look at how the driver initializes its endpoints or grep for “->name” in the file to find where it sets it… If the controller you are porting to doesn't have an endpoint matching the endpoint description requested, then you are allowed to return a different endpoint as long as you properly modify the endpoint description to set the bEndpointAddress to the correct address address of the new endpoint (but you still have to respect the direction of the endpoint of course!)

I spent some time working on this. I am sure it is possible.
I think there are two things that would have to happen.
1. A custom kernel. - I know there are a few things that must be disabled in the kernel. ADB USB Functionality, USB Mass Storage Functionality, Tethering, and on some devices WiFI. (I forget where I read that these must be disabled, but I did read it)
2. Changes to the code.
I am no expert at this, I think I am proficient at doing SOME things. I created a zImage last night. I know I am missing something tried to create a custom NBH and put it on my kaiser no go.
So, think I'll be spending more time on this. Anyone had any luck working on this at all?
UPDATE:
I did some pocking around, this is what I found in msm72k_udc.c for the closest thing to SET_ADDRESS (It was USB_REQ_SET_ADDRESS)
Code:
writel((ctl.wValue << 25) | (1 << 24), USB_DEVICEADDR);
I will be honest unsure if this is the driver for the controller due to the fact that on the device the usb driver is msm_hsusb. However, I tend to be wrong more than I am right so....
This phone is capable of it i'm sure. I just tried every other psfreedom releases and experienced different behaviours with each one of them. Though i know that zImage needs to be modified. I'm no programmer so i can't really help anyone with this.
So let's hope someone work something out.
OK I think It is not the msm72k but the msm_hsusb, when you look at the device it shows that in the usb driver folder.
Based on the psfreedom site is "in progress". Hopefully someone smarter than I is working it bc dont think Ill get far.
i'm looking for a tytn2 port too! Thanks for all of you that's working for it.
sugestion...maybe put this thread as an official for psfreedom kaiser info?
thanks!

Yep as far as i know this is a good start...

This android port works with kaiser as you can see in the compatibility table.
Is there anyone who's able to modify zImage for us?
I think we're getting close. The only problem so far is the usb driver.
Come on guys you can do it!

Let's wait and see
I think the usb on kaiser working.. mean someone tell me it work on linux.. but in WXP can it fork too I think.. someone can use usb on W7 x64. But I can't get it work there...
Can anyone tel me how get it fully work on W7 x64? Thanks
Sent from my HTC Kaiser Ion using XDA App
come on guys, u can do it!!!!!
Is still on development?, or nobody will continue?, its a shame, kaiser is very usefull on android Roms, maybe is not that easy to port.
By te way, is a port for HERO on the wiki, and kaiser runs several roms from Hero smartphone, is this useful?
http://wiki.psfreedom.com/wiki/Device_compatibility_list
Regards.
msm_hsusb is just an other driver for the MSM72K controller, which is used in older kernels.
