carrierlogo.gif - what happens if I delete it? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I have seen XDAs (in the phone app) that have the carrier's name written in plain text. If I delete the carrierlogo.gif file, will I be able to accomplish this? or will it show nothing whether or not I have a signal?

carrierlogo.gif is only for showing your network operator logo when you open phone dialer ...

I know that part - the carrierlogo though does not change based on the operator
My carrierlogo now is "cingular" - when I put another SIM in it it still says "Cingular" unless I go into the \Windows directory and replace the GIF with another "carrirlogo" image from another carrier.
What I am asking is this: If I remove the "carrierlogo.gif" file, then when I put in a different SIM will I see what carrier I am actually on?
example: I put in my Cingular SIM - I see "Cingular" (in plain text)
I put in my Cosmote SIM - I see "Cosmote" (in plain text when I am in Greece)
I put in my T-Mobile USA SIM - I see "T-Mobile" in plain text

yes, download the carrierlogo.gif and u get is only plain text. or to be safe, just copy the carrierlogo.gif to ur documents or something and leave nothing on ur \windows folder, and if u decided u didnt like it, copy back the carrierlogo.gif back. that simple

sorry for my typo, not download but delete.

Thanks

For some reason I can not delete the carrierlogo.gif in my Windows directory. How to delete it. I have a new HTC Universal (MDA Pro) with T-Mobile logo (even when I now use a Vodafone SIM).
Thanks

Good Mobile on Dash

I have tried to install the Good Mobile messaging application on the S620 and the installer identifies the phone incorrectly. So the functionality of the Good Mobile messaging is not like it should be. The installer seems to only understand what type of phone it is if it returns the "T-Mobile Dash" words from the ROM. is there a way to modify the ROM Name even temporarily so that the app will install.(crazy idea but thought i would ask)
any help would be greatly appreciated.
There's a text file: \Windows\ModelName.txt, that you can copy out of the handset, edit and drop back in. At the prompt to overwrite, say yes. Should take care of it.
~Cheers~
P.S. Here it is attached.
That's an excellent suggestion... but I how do i get the file deleted? it's read-only and it won't let me change that....
cgg
You just drag it into the window and click ok to overwrite it. It'll do it AND add the appropriate attributes automatically.
~Cheers~
P.S. By window, I mean, open up My Computer, open Mobile Device, and navigate to the Windows folder.
If it doesnt let you overwrite it from your desktop, try doing it on the device with a thirdparty file program, like totalcommander or similar, just put the edited file in the root directory, and copy it and paste it on the device itself.
I had to dl'd the TotalCommander to get the file changed. Thanks for the suggestion!
Still doesn't seem to solve the problem. The information being retrieved from the phone must still be returning something other than T-Mobile Dash
I was able to have it replaced without issue, and straight from the desktop. Weird how you guys had to use an app to do it.
~Cheers~
Did you ever get GOOD to work? I am on WM6 and can't get the OTS installer to work on my device. Do I need to go back to WM5? How do i do that?
i could be wrong but i don't think good officially supports WM6 yet.
Thanks for the tip about the file, now my phone has got it's original name.
Ka.
Yah GOOD does not work on WM6
I had to go back to WM5 for GOOD to work, and now it works great with my companies exchange server. There are some things i don't like, but i can live. Does anyone have any different themes or homepages that are compatible with the GOOD software?

Task Bar Signal Strength

Hello!
I'm calling out to all people who amend Task Bar icons such as battery / Sound etc to see if anyone knows how to change the signal bars on a GSM frequency?
At present all I can find are Icons that use the standard 4 bar for GSM (4 bar cannot be changed and will always be 4 bar) but I'm wanting to amend these and cannot find the .dll responsible for them.
I've searched all the forums as much as I can and found ways of changing the .dll's, but none change the signal bars. They do for CDMA, 3,4,5 or 6 bars, but only 4 for GSM.
Anyone any the wiser on which file it is?
Thanks
Anyone got any ideas? I'm scrolling through loads of .dll's but can't find it. Think it could be a system one which I can't get access to.
I've looked for this info as well, but not come across anything so far.
Even if the resource file is in the ROM, we should be able to use the rom extractor to get it shouldn't we?
When using resource hacker, occasionally "access denied" pops up when trying to look at certain icon groups. I'm not sure how to access these groups, but maybe it is in one of them?

Yeah thats what I'm thinking. Not sure how you would get access to them. I know you can unsign the files, but first we need to get them off the HD which I'm not sure how as it won't let me copy all of them.
Then theres the issue of how do you put it back on if the one on the HD is protected?

You use the rom extractor (a quick search of this site will find it) to get the ones you can't copy with your explorer(I assume you are total commander or something similar).
I've already done all this (previously), the icon groups to which access is denied are within these extracted and unsigned files. I still haven't checked each and every resource file yet, so the icons may still be accessible within one of them. As far as getting access to the inaccessable ones, I have no idea where to start.
As far as putting back on, all you need to do is copy a protected file to your storage card (which removes the protection on the file) and then copy it straight back to the windows folder (this replaces the original with the one where protection is removed). Now you will be able to rename the original file and copy in your edited file. Alternatively you can create a CAB file to install it, for some reason this method doesn't require renaming/removing/whatever the original file and is reversible by uninstall.

modified MMS.APK For Softbank (iPhone) users

Since I couldn't find this for the S2, I grabbed a Hex Editor to change the mms_config.xml file to allow the User Agent to be spoofed as an iPhone. This allowed me to use this information http://android.modaco.com/topic/301380-apn-for-internet-mms-apk-for-softbank-users-in-japan/ to get MMS up and running on my non-Docomo S2.
Step by Step:
1. I used the link above to set my APN for MMS (I have the black SIM).
2. I used "My Softbank" website to setup my softbank.ne.jp account
3. I pulled out mms_config.xml from MMS.APK and used HxD to modify the mms_config.xml file to match User Agent settings from another mms_config for an iPhone, then re-added it back into the APK.
4. I used Root Explorer to replace MMS.APK in the /system/app folder.
5. I re-booted, and was able to actually download MMS messages that I had waiting in my queue. (before it would just fail)
Hope this helps, and like everyone else, if you use this and your phone bricks, I didn't do it!
Tested on Galaxy S2 running Litening 2.0.

What is the latest rom I can use for SG2? By the way, I think the SG2 is simcard unlocked by default as when I inserted my iphone sim, it recognize it as softbank.

[Q] HTC Watch for non-supported countries

Hi, this is my first thread, so apologies if it is in the wrong section.
I live in India. Here, HTC watch is not supported. It just shows trailer of 5 or 6 old movies like Resident Evil Afterlife etc. So my question: Is there a way I can change my country to some other like USA or Britain and then access, or maybe just get the full list with some kind of hack.
Thanks for any help :-D

You can try installing root explorer or any other equivalent app in order to browse the system folder (you need to root your device for it).
1. Once you're in the system folder, open up build.prop file (you can drag and drop it into sd card then attach the card to computer and open that file with notepad).
2. Once you're inside build.prop, look for the line "ro.product.locale.region=" without quotation marks and after = sign, try adding "US" without the quotations and then save it. Reboot the device and then open up that app, it might work...
3. If there's no such line, just add it at the bottom of the page.
4. So in the end it should look like: ro.product.locale.region=US
Hope it helps.

[Q] Ringtone filenames aren't the same as Windows filename? [SOLVED - SORT OF]

So I'm putting together a package of a zillion Notications & Ringtones onto my phone's external SD card.
First thing I notice is that the filename I see in Windows is not the same name as what comes up when I go to select a Ringtone in Jelly Bean.
Any idea why that is, or how I can make the filenames the same in Windows Explorer AND Android?

This is because android pulls the name from what is listed in the properties section and not the files name.

Do you know where the properties are that this gets changed?
Because I took one test MP3 and made two copies of it.
1) Name & Properties name unchanged.
2) Name changed to "Test" and properties name (which was blank) left unchanged.
3) Name chnaged to "Test2" and properties name set to "Test 2".
All three came up in Android with the Windows filename.
It's hard to find the ones that have different filename. I literally have like 1000 ringtones.
Okay, it actually does work. Sort of.
It just takes Android a LONG time to change the filenames for some reason.
If I copy all my name-changed ringtones to the phone, it initially displays the filenames. But after about ten minutes, if you go back in again it shows the new filenames.
Just need to be patient.
Also, it will only display the new filenames if there is nothing listed for the filename in the file properties "Detail" tab. If there is a name in the "Detail" tab, then Android reverts to that name instead of whatever file name I assign it.
Right now I'm trying to google up some sort of batch program that will remove the "Details" name from all my files.
