XDA IIi - Please help me !! - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello Guys
Firstly, Ive been thru this forum and wiki and have tried various things without major success............Im now getting pretty fed-up.
Ive got an O2 XDA IIi, which Ive unlocked ready for my Orange Contract SIM.
My SIM works for phone and text, but keeps getting "no modem" errors if I try to connect GPRS.
Ive downloaded Resco and can see the Extended Rom folder.
Ive downloaded 3 or 4 different Ext Rom Unlockers - without success (Ive deleted each in turn, installed the next version and soft-reset as I went).
I actually have all of the Orange CAB files, which seem to load onto the PDA if i put them in My Docs and click each in turn - BUT, I still cant connect and all reverts back to O2 if I hard-reset.
So, now I have done a hard-reset and soft reset prior to O2 stuff being auto-installed from Ext Rom (?).
Im getting pretty frustrated at not being able to access the write-protected Ext Rom in order to swap the O2 stuff for my Orange settings.
PLEASE - can anyone give me some step-by-step instructions on what I can do ?
AND - let me know if Im looking in the totally wrong place to start with.
Thanks
Paul
My XDA IIi details are :-
Model No PH10C
Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edtn
Processor Intel PXA272
Speed 520MHz
Flash Size 64MB
Memory 122.04MB
ROM Version 1.10.00 WWE
ROM Date 12/24/04
Radio Version 1.00.00
Protocol Version 1337.39
ExtROM Version - Not Showing as soft-reset during software load

http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HimalayaRomkitchen
the last part
unhide your rom and unlock you rom
copy the cab files to the extented rom dir
edit the txt file to include the new added cab files
and remove the entry for the ones you are removing
hide and lock your rom
and hardreset

Thanks Rudegar
Unfortunately, Ive already tried the unlocker tool (and several different versions of them).
Ive just tried again with the one mentioned (it tells me that the software was written for an older version of windows software), and when i select Unhide, the image turns grey but nothing happens.
When I select unlock, i get an error message and "FL_IOCTL_BDTL_HW_PROTECTION"
When I click OK, i get "- A device attached to the system is not functioning."
Clicking OK again, gives me "extrom unlocked" - but it ISNT unlocked.
Any ideas ?
Thanks
Paul

Also,
As I can see the Ext Rom folder, I tried to edit the config.txt file (just to see if it could be edited).
I got a message "No Storage memory available. Tap Cancel, use File Explorer to delete some files and try again. Or, move the note to an alternative storage location. Tap discard to close the document without sving changes"
If I then try to move or delete the config.txt (or any other) file, I get "The media is write protected"
I then installed the Repart_DOC_with_Default tool to make the Ext Rom file larger.
Unfortunately, I get an error "FL_IOCTL_FORMAT_PHYSICAL_DRIVE failed" message and I cannot increase the folder size.
Anyone have any ideas please ?
Thanks
Paul

no if i were you i would try asking or looking in the apline forum because the IIi is alpine and there may be more people there who knows any special things you need to do to unlock alpine devices

Thanks Rudegar
Ive placed a link to this thread in the Alpine section, but as there are so few posts there Im not too hopeful.
Does anyone have any ideas on this please ?
I dont mind paying (or donating) a fair amount in order to get this sorted.
Cheers
Paul

For the mobile that can not unlock by the Extended ROM Unlocker, You have to use the method that DrChair posted here.
You have to find the start point of the ExtROM image which is in Fat16 format, by using Hex Editor and Find "eb fe 90 4d 53 57 49 4e 34 2e 31" (Hex). Copy from this location till 23.2 MB of file size. Open it as virtual disk, then you can do modification.

OMG - I thought things were complicated already.
Surely there must be an easier way to edit Extended Rom on XDA IIi ?
All of the other models appear to have fairly straightforward methods to edit - all except for the XDA IIi
Im afraid all of the link you gave has gone way above my head - it is far too complicated for me.
............
1. First dump your rom to a SD-card, using the well know method.
Which method ? - its not well known to me as i havent found it yet ?
2. Next get the rom to your pc, using ntrw
ntrw ?
3. Using a Hex-editor, copy 2BC019C (HEX) till 3EC019C (HEX) to a file.
ok, i think i will be able to do this.
4. Mount that file as a virtual Harddisk (I use the virtualdisk-plugin for total commander)
??
5. Modify your ExtROM on that Virtualdisk.
ok, i think i know what this means.
6. Umount the Virtualdisk.
??
7. paste the contents of the (modified) file back into the rom-file, at precicly the same position and save it under a different name.
can i do this if the files are write protected ?
8. put the modified rom back onto your SD-card, using ntrw.
? as per 2.
9. Flash your Magician, with the new rom.
Flash ? - and I dont have a Magician, I have an Alpine.
Anyone able to clarify all of this please ??
Paul

Since you are not that technical, I suggest you to forget about it. Or else you may destroy your IIi.
Be understand that architecture of IIi II and Mini are all different. Extended ROM of II is located at DOC (disk on Chip) ROM. But Mini and IIi are not. Mini Extended ROM is located at normal flash memory and not locked READ HERE. I think IIi is the same as Mini. So, wait for some good programmer or hacker to do it. Which may be forever.
You can get some flavour by reading Here. Eventhough you could not read the language, but all the pictures will tell you something.

but it should not be requred to add the stuff to the extented rom to get it to access gprs and mms it's just about putting in the settings
and making sure the right settings are used if there are still
the old settings there

Thanks Guys
I have copied several .cab files onto the PDA for Orange UK Contract settings.
My concerns are that I know the Extended Rom is full of references to O2 and will revert to O2 should I need to hard reset (unless I always keep Orange settings on my MMC).
BUT, Im not convinced that simply clicking onto the Orange .cab files has given me the correct set-up to access GPRS etc - as I cannot access at all.
I keep thinking that somewhere in the darkest depths of the system those original O2 settings are still controlling my PDA.
If someone can confirm for me that by installing and running all of the orange .cab files will indeed set-up the PDA for full Orange access (with no O2 settings running from within the Ext Rom), then I can cope with having to store a copy on my MMC.
Thank very much guys
Paul

if you search the networking forum with the text
GRPS AND <insert your cellphone company>
you are sure to find the right settings plus how to manualy set it up
and when you then sync with activesync you can set it to backup
your settings so if you hardreset you can just restore your backup
and get your settings the way they were

Orange GPRS Settings on 02 xda i
The settings are:-
In New Connections:
SELECT A MODEM = Cellular Line (GPRS)
ACCESS POINT NAME = orangeinternet
USER NAME = Blank
PASSWORD = Blank
DOMAIN = Blank
IN ADVANCED SETTINGS TCP/IP TAB
TICK User server assigned IP address
TICK Use Server Assigned Addresses - SERVERS TAB
You then tap on the G Symbol at the top of the screen and then tap on
Connect GPRS
Two seconds later you are connected.

Thanks Silverhill,
Unfortunately, those setings are already in the PDA and dont connect.
I get a "modem not found" error message.
I can connect with WAP dial-up, but not GPRS.
.....
I have now ordered both O2 AND Orange pre-pay SIM Cards (as they cost less than £10 for the two).
If I do a hard-reset and the O2 SIM doesnt work, I will know the PDA is faulty.
If it works, I can then load the Orange .cab files (after doing a soft-reset during the hard-reset so as not to pre-load O2 from the Ext Rom).
I will then try the Orange Pre-Pay SIM to see if that works.
If it doesnt, it would suggest that the O2 files on the Ext Rom are indeed controlling the settings - even though I stopped them from loading on the reset.
Other than that, I am totally stuffed.
It may be that I have to do a number port of my valuable mobile number and go onto the O2 network.
Cheers
Paul

OK
I received my new Orange PAYG Sim Card, registered it and it worked first time. (I did the same with the new O2 Sim and that worked too.)
Instant GPRS connection - wonderful.
SO, we know that the settings I have on my XDA IIi are correct for Orange and that there isn't any hardware conflict and also that my PDA is not faulty.
A quick phone call to Orange Tech Support AND THEY ASK YOU TO ENTER ALL OF THE SETTINGS AND TELL YOU THE PDA MAY NOT BE COMPATABLE WITH ORANGE !!!!
They really are useless !
I explain (argue) that the PDA must be compatable as the new Orange Sim works fine.
Im told that the only way to check is to go to an Orange Shop and ask them to test my Sim Card in one of their GPRS phones - "which will prove the Sim Card is perfectly OK and the problem is with the PDA" (their words).
I travel 25 miles to a shop and the Sim Card DOES NOT work in their phone.
The assistant offers to call Orange Tech for me to confirm the situation. After being kept on hold for 35 minutes, Orange inform her that my Sim is an older (brown in colour) card and it isnt possible to programme it for newer technologies.
The assistant asks for a new replacement for me and is told that because my PDA is not an Orange supported phone, there is no way for them to run a diagnostic check on it and therefore no way to be 100% sure the Sim is the problem - despite the Orange Sales Assistant confirming it does not work on their GPRS phone.
I am then informed that I can BUY a new Sim Card (blue in colour) for £20 that will work.
At this point I have spent a week trying various settings at home and have stood in the Orange shop for over an hour, so I agree to buy the new card.
Hopefully, it will arrive today or tomorrow and all will be well.
My only "worry" is that I still have all of the O2 settings on my extended rom - so I will keep looking on the forums over the next few months to see if anyone has any better solutions to those currently available.
Thanks everyone for you feedback and assistance.
Paul

buy?
odd when i had my old xda1 stolen i just called my cellphone company
and said it was stolen and they sendt me a new sim card
no charge
same thing had i lost it

Hi Rudegar
Yes - BUY
Ive been an Orange Contract customer for around 9 years (OK, so my monthly bill is only around £3).
They are happy to change my account to Orange World (GPRS enabled) and charge me an extra £4 a month min.
They are told by their own staff that my Sim is actually faulty - the Sim they originally supplied.
They are shown that the XDA IIi is not at fault.
And then they insist on charging me to be able to access the things they are charging me to access.
Like I said, Orange really are a joke.
I have actually placed my mobile phone number (it is pretty special) for sale on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rarely-Availa...429158530QQcategoryZ29781QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
When it sells, I will be moving network and will just go to pre-pay with any bog std number as my call charges and usage are so small.
Thanks
Paul
PS, I hope I wont get told off for plugging my ebay sale.

cant you transfer your nr to your new sim with another company ?
here you can but they take a month to do it guess as a punishment because the thing only takes them 1 sec

SCREAM !!!!!!!
OK, thats out of my system now.
Ive just had the new Orange Sim Card for my contract with them.
Ive tried to register it with them and they REFUSE to pair the new Sim with my XDAIIi
They inform me that because it is a non-Orange phone the insurance would be invalidated - I explained that I do NOT have any insurance to worry about invalidating.
I asked why they were happy to pair a new PAYG Sim Card with the phone a couple of days ago but not my Contract Sim Card.
Their reply was that "by pairing the PAYG Sim and the non-Orange handset, we get new business, but by pairing your contract with a non-Orange phone, we are losing money because you've performed a back-door upgrade".
CAN YOU BELIEVE THESE PEOPLE.
I havent a clue what to do next, as Im getting pretty fed-up of dealing with them.
Paul

lol brand now world where the customer is never right and a bit of a bother
and should count himself lucky that they want to talk to him at all
is at hand
take would take my business elsewhere and never look back
here orange just became more and more unpopular untill they sold their
department to telia and left the country

Changing my rom, unlocked/locked?

Hi guys, i'm fairly new with my o2 XDA exec and was wondering......
1. My device is an o2 XDA exec which comes unlocked, if i change my rom to the latest orange rom will it remain unlocked?
2, I have backed up my XDA to my memory card using SPB Backup, if i run this exe. file from the memory card, will it just reinstall all my apps/configurations to the orange rom?
3, Can anyone tell me where to find the latest orange uk rom which ships on their device, the M5000, and do you think its better than the o2 rom?
Thanks for any advice given
1.yes it will still be unlocked. I've installed the latest imate rom on my exec since it came out and I highly recommend it. I use an Orange pay monthly simcard and have configured gprs and mms on my exec without problems.
2. yes it should do but I would recommend that u backup the pim.vol whic ch contains all your user data like contacts etc then re-install your applcations.
3. definatley recommend the latest imate rom personally but others may suggest the orange.
HTH
Thanks bukwit for your quick reply. These questions may make me sound really dumb but here goes....
1, How do i backup the pim.vol, and what does this do?
2, Which operator is the imate rom for, and where could i find it?
..no problem...
1. Use file explorer to navigate to the root directory of your exec. There u will see the pim.vol file which u can literally copy to an sd card or if your connected to activsync then u can copy this file to your pc by clicking on the explore button on the activsync window itself. This file contains all your contact/calendar information as far as I know. Always worth backing it up unless u synchronise with MS Outlook.
2. The latest imate rom is officially for the imate jasjar which is unlocked to all networks therefore there is NO specific operator that this rom is designed for. I've been using this since it came out with my Orange configurations for MMS and GPRS etc.
The rom is on the ftp site in this directory
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Universal/Shipped_Complete_Updates/
it should be called JASJAR_WWE_13076_164_10900_wwe_ship.exe
I would recommend u first look around the Universal forums and read what people are saying before u jump into it. Its always good to know what to expect when doing something like this.

Lordsmiff operator cabs

I've been through the new HTC Operator config software for the UK and extracted all the various cabs that will configure your internet, MMS and connection settings automatically.
I've tested the T-Mobile one and it works fine on WM6 (Black 2.0 specifically
I know there is some software being developed to get this from a central source but I find having a cab I can run much more useful as I can store it on my SD card and restore all the settings even if I'm not near a computer and have had to hard reset
By now, I've flashed so many new ROMs from here that I can remember the details for pretty much everything anyway, but it's always easier getting it done automatically ;-)
Question is - do people want me to post the cabs here for them?
OK, question answered : here they are
yep! that be great!
Hi there,
A set for Orange UK would be fantastic!
I`ve downloaded quite a few but most of them dont work and I end up fiddling with the settings myself until I get it right.
I flashed to WMB2.0 last week and although I THINK everything is ok now, I dont think my MMS is working fully.
Avid
Yeah, that'd be cool. I could put in on my SD and it'd save me running the app.
Nice one lord.
Maximum number of files reached - here's the vodafone one
Enjoy
Thanks dude!
You utter star Lordsmiff, I've been trying to make one of these but not getting too far converting the xml files from the ext rom.
Thank you very much
Italian cabs? Please..... (in the HTC site they call our language ITALIEN, instead of ITALIANO, Europe is far from HTC's headquarter!)
cool. thanks tired of manually entering all my voda settings when i flash.
Great!
For the first time since I bought my Tytn (Novemeber) I can now send and receive MMS on Tmobile.
Thanks a lot.
Rob
Lordsmiff, what a star you are!!! I've been after a T-Mobile one for ages... fantastic

I tried to do the same (running the exe with hermes not connected) but I realized it deletes the cab file from the temp folder.
If you briefly tell me how I would gladly lose some mins to extract some more for other countries.
I'm overwhelmed by the positive response here - thanks everyone I thought it was only me who was getting sick and tired of always manually entering all the connection settings.
I will therefore, have a go at extracting the cabs for the other country's operators, starting with, as requested, ITALIEN ;-)

Creating a ROM image

Hi all
From some research i've been doing i think i need to create a ROM image but i'll tell you my problem and let you recomend me a solution.
Basically i need to setup 30 PDA's (XDA Argon's running WM5.0) These PDA's will be running a program called service director and also have TOMTOM installed. What i need to be able to do is be able to create an "image" that i can just copy to each PDA to speed up deployment. It would also be useful should there be any problems in the field with the PDA's that they could just be hard reset back to their modified state after deployment. E.g with Service Director and TomTom installed. I have found out that if i create a folder on a memory card with a directory name of 2577 and put my .cabs in there that they will automatically be installed on insertion of the card. This could also be beneficial to me, but i don't think that it would be robust enough, especially if they drop the device and put their memory card back in after its popped out.
So what do you think my best options would be?
Thanks for any help in advance and if you need any info, just let me know.
Thanks
Andy

do the 2577 option but create an autorun program that installs the cab files and then deletes the 2577 folder, thus it wont re-install when the cab is re-inserted
That's ok, but then the engineer would then have to send the card back to us so that we could set it up again. E.g the card would only allow them to set the software back up once and then they would have to send the PDA back to us for us to reconfigure it should it go wrong again. We can't really afford to do this as they need the PDA to find their next job/update jobs etc and can't really afford to have it sent back to us everytime it goes wrong.
well there is currently no way flashing custom ROM's to the xda argon (HTC Panda?) and wont be until one or more devs get thier hands on one so burining it into the rom isnt an option. the only thing I can think of is to have it ask if you want to install the software when it is inserted rather than doing it automatically.
I didnt think it wouldve been available yet. Oh well, looks like i'll have to make it do it via the memory card for the moment. Like all brilliant companies mine just told me, here's what we want, now go and make it happen! Haha!
I take it the card will need to have some kind of .inf file on it to ask you whether you want to install it or not. I would try it, but my company havent even given me the PDA to play with yet.
All i have is an SPV M500(My own old phone) and knowing my luck, they won't work the same with the software we're using.
In that case, why dont you have the autorun RENAME the folder instead of delete it. Your users should then be able to rename it back in case of need (they should be able to do that!), and do the insert sd card thing.

Why not on original installation have it delete the file from the folder and also have in the same folder a IE web shortcut to the original file on a Company server that would allow them to download the file again into the same folder, assuming they would have an internet connection and the file is not too large to download and you can direct the download to that particular folder?
They could then take out the card and re-insert it to automatically install the program again.
Maybe a poopoo idea, but I guess worth a thought?
Good luck
C
the autorun folder is the same for all devices with wm5/6 so thats fine and you would haev to write a progra to do it, not an inf.
if you cant do it yourself im sure someone else on the forum wouldnt mind for a modest donation (myself included)

4GB SDHC card on WM5 XDA Orbit

Hi Everyone,
I have Xda Orbit by O2 bought in 2007, used it for only few months and since then it's been sat there in the box, have just started using it again and needed to put a bigger card (I have never used any memory card in it, and it dosn't even detect my SanDisk 4gb SDHC), now after all the search, it says i'd have to put a newer version of windows mobile in it, mine one is on WM5.
O2's website won't provide me with an update as they only have new XDA's listed on their website. upon my research i have found out on this forum that by putting this file called "SDHC-Artemis.cab" would make SDHC 4gb up and running, now the question is will this .cab file work on WM5? Where from i get it and how do i install it?
Plus any suggestions on how can i upgrade my WM5 to WM6 as i don't have any genuine copy of it, are the ones available around some cracked versions or something?
Many thanks in advance!!!
did u get your phone from the UK??
try this thread....I just flashed it today, works perfectly!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455130
You may want to upgrade the radio rom to 3.34.90
...and I have no idea about the SDHC issue.
Thanks Klee, Yes i bought the phone from UK around Jan, 2007. Just called O2people but they said they can't do anything, which was very bad, and we can't even go to the manufacturer.
Sony Erricsson provides 3 years manufacturer's warranty even after your service provider stops.
well, have you tried putting in any bigger memory card after you have put WM6 in your phone?
which installation process did you follow, any tips? shall i use AutoSync which came with the phone originally?
Many Thanks for your help, Much Appreciated!!!!
by the way Would i have to Crack this windows or is it ready to go or something?
Basically first install activesync, run activesync and connect your phone to the computer
wait until your phone finishes syncing and all that, double click the exe file you downloaded in the thread I gave you earlier.... follow the instructions, after ~10 minutes, a working wm6 phone!
This is the official upgrade, so there is no need to unlock the phone first.
about the sdhc issue....I've never tried anything over 1GB, as I don't have the need for a bigger card, so I've no idea. I believe there is an SDHC cab somewhere floating around here, try searching for it
Hope this helps.
Thanks a lot mate,
this surely and definitely is helpful, i have downloaded the file, but haven't put it on the phone yet, as i don't have any spare phone for "just in case".
once i get a cheap standby phone i'll install it, very much looking forward to it.
and yes, i have thoroughly searched about the SDHC issue, and there is a patch available which i'll run once i have got WM6 sorted!
Kind Regards!!
Xda orbit rom download link please
Hi did u flush your xda orbit with windows mobile 6 if yes which one because on the site it don’t show the xda orbit, (which rom shall I select) , if yes can u provide the link to download the rom please, also after flushing with wm6 lot of people on the forum claiming problem with wifi, gps, and Bluetooth one or the other , have u had any problem with any of this, please help will be appreciated thanks
Hi klee,
I have managed to put the newer version of windows you suggested onto my phone, and it seems to work fine, have got my 4gb MicroSD card working too, by the help of above .Cab file i mentioned. can't manage to stream videos despite of trying several different utilities, i have installed .Net framework as well but still can't run the Cab files, any suggestions?
Best Regards,
Ahsan

Official Igo 8.3.2.87762

Hi,
i have just received this Igo package but when when i start program all I see is the blue start up screen and the words initializing.
then it just shuts down, when I restart the application it mentions that it is already running and I need to wait a fes seconds or do a soft reset.
The application will only quit with a soft reset.
Any suggestions?

igo8 first boot
the first time you install the sd card and run it can take 3 to 5 mins and longer to start on its fisrt install.
after that its not so bad untill you add new speed camra database.
just give it some time to load if after 10 mins it dont start then some thing is not right.
Doesn’t matter official or unofficial always make sure you have right sys.txt:

Hi,
just a quick update. I have emailed several times with Naviextras and have even send the original sd card back for a check (turned out te be just fine). The problem in short is foloowing:
- if I install the original 4GB card the program does not start automatically. Searching for the card using the Windows explorer option is not possible. Looks to me like my phone does recognize the card.
- If I copy the 4gb cards content to a 8gb card and install it into the phone, hte programm immediately starts. after the 2577 installation is done I can see the Igo icon in the today screen but when I tap it, it freezes on the blue igo screen with the words "Initi Appli". Naviextras support could not yet find a solution and I am now trying to check with HTC if there might be a ROM update that I am missing. I found a ROM update on their website but cannot dowload it onto my phone.
any suggestions, anyone?
Hi there,

My Igo still does not work on my HTC Touch HD. These are the steps I have taken. Maybe someone has an idea that can help me out?
- Bought the official software, it is a 4gb card
- tried to install it but no luck. The Widnows explorer cannot find the card at all.
- Emailed Naviextras for their support
- Tried changing the sys.txt, no luck
- Card was sent back to Naviextras, they checked hte card but it was fine according to them
- On their request, copied the content of the card to my computer and onto another micro sd card (8 gb). It was found but with the above mentioned problem
- Naviextras suggested to contact HTC
- It turns out that my phone is a Vodafone branded phone and they re-directed me to Vodafone
- A lot of mailing between me, HTC, vodafone but wiht no luck
( I even got the suggestion to format the original card)
I have tried the same original card on a HTC MDA Compact V ( it is a month old) and the card was immediately recognized.
I am currently still trying to find a solution.
Any suggestions anyone? HTC also infomred me that there is a ROM update but that I cannot download onto my phone due to the fact that it is Vodafone branded.
Help anyone, please?

Hi, tried it but Vodafone is refusing to help me with it. There is even a "radio silence"from their side ( and I am emailing them a lot.)
HTC has already offered to help me to get the ROM update on my phone if Vodafone still refuses to help me out.
But in the mean time the card still does not work. The strange thing is that a cracked version of the software works fine ( but I cannot receive updates) and the official one does not work.
My last guess would be that it has to do with the simlock that is currently still on the phone.
Story continious (as both HTC and Naviextras would like to know what happenend).
and as promissed. I contacted vodafone and it took me quite some time to make them understand my problem. The original card works fine on:
- t-mobile brnaded HTC MDA V
- KPN Samsung Qwerty
- Telfort branded HTC Touch HD
I finally managed to get vodafone ot look inot it and their plain and simple answer is use TOMTOM. The software from Igo is not compatible with the vodafone software on this HTC and I should somehow see how ot upgrade the rom myself. The guarentee however would not disappear as everyone seems to be doing this?????
So finally, after almost 5 months Vodafone admits that they have somehow locked their software so it does not run with other navigation softwares except the ones they choose.
But I was wondering, if I unlock the SIM code, could the issue then be solved? I have no idea what this simlock stuff does.
