Check out this channel 9 video ( http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=95972 ) with a demo of WM5 on a BlueAngel. So it is VERY posible for it to work! the BA demo is about 35min in to the video. i like the way the 2 outer hard keys on the BA are used as menu buttons like on the smartphone.
which file is it?
what do you mean which file? if you go to the channel 9 link here (http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=95972) you will see a save or play button. depening on your connection, click save (download) or play (streaming)
Nice find m8!
I wish we could get hold of WM 5.0 for Blue Angel, it's just soo annoying that we were so close as getting hold of it at tech ed 2005.
Tht guy does get a little too excited tho
it starts at the 35 minute mark where he shows the bA
Windows Mobile 5
As an early adopter of the Blue Angel device i feel that i have been told by HTC and Microsoft to say "how high" when they say "jump". I purchassed this phone in January of this year and i am being told now to go buy another phone in a few months if i want Windows Mobile 5. I have so far had 3 pocket pc phones and would never switch to a blackberry device but at this point i do not believe that i will continue buying devices like i have in the past. Now this clip from Microsoft shows that it is possible to load Windows Mobile 5 onto the HTC Blue Angel device. I do not see why HTC will just not leak this update. They will most likely loose many customers including me and many of the people i have recomended to purchase pocket pc phones. I have no question that HTC scans these sights so i am asking them why they can not just release the file.
Thank You,
Considering that Buzz managed to get it working on the Xda II (Himalaya) I can't see that there should be a problem with HTC/MS sorting it out for the BA.
Interestingly, it looks like HP are going to provide a WM5 update for certain IPaqs, perhaps HTC and the service providers should take note.
My friend recently bought an iPaq with WM2003se and it came with a voucher that entitles him t upgrade free to WM2005.
C'mon HTC, pull yer finger out!! We deserve this more than anyone! Perhaps if we petition and email it to HTC, explaining exactly how turd our current software is and how dsperately we need this.
Yes, it's quite turd.
We need to send a Chinese Food Delivery person to that nerd holding the BA with the NEW mobile 5 rom so he can stick his sd card and run out.
That would kick tush!!!!
Does anybody know him??
I would love a copy of WM5 for the BA. its a pity. hopefully HTC do release an upgrade, eventually.
the guy in the video said that its an internal version only and said it wont be released to the public, its funny though, they say that wm5.0 is better for the faster fones, but as he showed this BA with it working on it, it worked fast too...the only way we are going to have it, is if some idiot that decided we are not having it, has 3 ghosts come to him in the middle of the night , or if someone like james bond can brake into the MS fortress, or if the same guy that leaked the himalaya version of this rom has a heart and leakes this for us.
Peace.
joey.

I've been using a PDA since the days of the Apple Newton! When I bought the Xda IIs recently in Malaysia, I thought I could finally travel light without my camera, iPod and phone. Sadly that has not been the case. My Xda hangs all the time, is unable to answer calls at times, sigh...
So I've spent the last 2 weeks (since I bought the Xda) trolling all sorts of forums looking for solutions. So do we blame Microsoft, HTC or O2? I think that it is reasonable to expect something that works as advertised but I guess not all companies have the same commitment to customer satisfaction.
I know I won't buy anything that comes from HTC again.
I think it is probably MS that should be blamed in this instance as the mics on the II/IIs/IIi have always seemed to work fine for voice recording and even on speakerphone so surely this is a software issue?
Having said that O2 do an incredible job of burying their heads in the sand with regards to the faults that we all nknow exist and it would be reasonable to expect HTC to actually test the phone software on their devices and fix the problem.
So lets just blame them all for bringing us all a package that so nearly is a dream convergence gadget and yet just manages to drop the ball at the last moment!
I have to disagree, what other device gives you Phone/Organiser/Video player/MP3 player/SatNav/Camera (still and video)/Email/Mobile Office document handling etc..etc..
OK so it's not perfect and admittedly the O2 stuff is pants but I have removed all that.
To be honest apart from the odd reset every couple of days I don't really have any problems with mine.
Hey, I even like the keyboard!!!
Perhaps I've just been lucky so far!
I suppose I will have to do what everyone is doing and tinker with the ROM, etc until it's right. You guys have certainly been very helpful as the site offers advice that you could never possibly find with support at O2. I do wonder if the HTC or O2 people actutally read these posts and feel guilty for not getting everything right for us
Don't disagree on the IIs being a cool piece of kit, I honestly would have to resort to murder if someone took mine off me but I just wish O2 would admit the problems with it as a phone & put some energy into fixing it instead of bringing out a ROM update which seems to have merely added more useless rubbish to O2 Active & moved the top bar icons around.
If the phone worked properly I would be ordering another 15 at work straight away!

I think they are working on fixes. But software development and testing takes a lot of time.
One O2 person once told me they could take the Imate approach - pitch out a new ROM as soon as HTC have it, and let customers test it, or they could wait and do it themselves.
1.31 is really not that bad, but I guess I don't stress my IIs.
The update isn't "bad", just not noticeably better than the launch ROM (once Bt bld 3500 is installed).
O2 don't even recognise the dodgy phone quality as a known fault. The testing arguement is just a cop out on there part as it's been an issue since the Xda 1, all 3rd party software companies seem to be able to patch/upgrade their software within 1-2 months of a new device release!
I just dont understand why people dont take advantage of the 14-day, or even sometimes 28-day, money back quarantees that all retailers/suppliers provide! People spend ages on informative forums like this one trying to sort out problems and sharing opinions so why not visit these forums before making a purchase? I dont really think manufacturers like HTC or Microsoft can be blamed as they're trying to provide a working environment within hardware/software with technology that is available NOW. Unless people are willing to wait/ponder for another year or 2 before anything that is remotely 90% stable as a pda/phone/mp3 player/camera then the IIs is as good as it gets.
IIs is just not as good as I think. Twice in a week cannot hear each other when dialing a call, but soft reset can solve to problem. Just really want to get back to confidence of reliance. I always feel people cannot contact me even when my phone is always on.
I have not installed any program relating to phone.
May be I should change back to a VGA PDA with bluetooth connecting to a more reliable normal phone, or just change a compaq.
IIs is a phone PDA but cannot dial and receive call sometimes.
Although it's sad, i'm glad to see it's not just me that has the can't hear amd answer calls problems.....I've had nothing but grief with my Xda2s. Thing is it does everything I want and stuff I can't get from any other phone.
Seems like you just have to put up with the problems if you want the most advanced kit
This is all about creating devices to keep shifting boxes, they rely on you wanting the latest piece of kit, it has always happened, flawed devices rushed to market to fulfil a demand created by the people marketing the devices and making all the promises. I have an xda 1, I have tried xda 2, ipaqs etc but I find this phone is reliable, allows me to add software in rom and it does everything I need it to do, I dont need a camera/bluetooth/wireless, I just need a phone/organiser/navigation system that works. I recently posted this topic.

Hi
My PDA2K is falling apart (I have dropped it a couple of times which has not helped.
I need to replace it and I am wondering with what.
I could simply go for another PDA2K but really never want to buy from i-mate ever again so am looking at [email protected]'s XDAIIs and IIi or the T-Mobile MDAIII.
Which is the best or would you steer totally clear of this phone because of all its problems?
Robin
I've got an O2 XDA2s & a work colleague has the T-Mobile MDAIII. Persoanlly I'd use either agin depsite their known issues. I like having an all-in-one device & am happy to compromise to get it
I would definitely buy another XDA IIs, if mine died. The grey colour of the O2 device simply oozes more class than the silver handsets.
Quality has been good (except for the hard reset issue when removing the battery - which is easily solved by keeping the power cord in when changing the sim card). I would be tempted to hang on for the universal though....... NICE!
i simply cannot afford to buy a brand new one if mine died, id have to wait til i can upgrade again, but if i could, then i would buy another as i have already got my bro to get one of these, and also he is a driving instructor, so its useful for his appointments and stuff.
if i was close to my upgrade date tho, i would just wait and get the next xda
joey.
Personally, no. I've realised I don't need the organisation or programs of a PDA. I bought it for Skype, but that doesn't work. The build quailty is not amazing.
I'll be going back to standard Sony Ericssons next contract period.
Chris
I'm very disappointed with all PDA's.
As a long time user AND enthusiast, I'm completely dissatisfied with everyone available. Moving to the BA from a HP, I expected better innovation from the leading producer of WM based PDA's, especially after seeing what HP was producing with the 6500's. Now I just realized that HTC is producing the 6500 for HP...!?!
Why wont someone produce a quality device with a hires (vga) screen, good memory (128 RAM, not to mention the availability of multi GB micro drives), reliable phone (GSM), fast data (GPRS/EDGE), un-crippled Bluetooth (audio/voice), and a small form factor (Treo). It has to be possible. I paid $850 for the BA (unlocked), and it's ridiculously unstable, and can't do what my $50 cell phone can do.
Bitter, Bitter, Bitter...
I hear you man. Sometimes I wonder if I should have got a different Pocket PC so Skype would actually work.
All of them are crippled/broken/manufactured badly in some way. The BA has its fair share of problems, but the important thing is that they're no more than any other PDA (apart from maybe the keyboard).
Chris
Some guy at work has te iPaq hybrid pda/phone. Quite swanky. I recently have this descision on my plate. Keep my new XDA2s or swap for the slower, but better made and more stable SE P910.
I'm waiting for Nokia N91.
I will surely buy another Blue Angel. Wish they could makde the keyboard more stronger and add WM 2005 in it .
I am pretty happy with the stuff .
NO!
his hardware its really crap...

Is your phone covered by your house insurance.....was it you that dropped it? I would be suspicious and claim for a new one if you get my drift!
I would definetaly buy another one! It has had it's issues, but they all do to one extent or another. I use mine for my work all the time, and it has been the best unit that I have owned to date.
Later.......
i will never buy xda lls.
i hope i can change my xda lls to xda lli now.
but i have no money
Absolutely NOT. Sick of the instability, the poor support, the resetting 3 times a day and everything else that goes with it.
Never again!
I like the idea of an all in-one-device but...
1) phone is unstable
2) bluetooth is unstable
3) pda is unstable requiring resets
4) no UMTS
5) no "good" camera (0.3 MP ? come on! 5MP cam phones are out already)
6) no EDGE support
7) low memory
8) don't use keyboard as often as I thought
it is an OK device, but could use a lot of improvement.
I live the universal and I would give it a try if it were quadband
Until 3 days ago I would have said no. My 02 XDA2s was horribly unstable in all the ways described above.
I then had to try and find a replacement all-in-one. All I found that does everything this does that I need is the XDA2i (which from reading the forum sounds just as bad) and the Nokia N91 (out this Christmas at the earliest - I needed a handset NOW!)
I will take the keyboard of the XDA2s over the camera of the 2i anyday (all XDA cameras are limited by the crappy lenses anyway, no matter hoe good resolution they make them). The keyboard's really useful when doing things like entering passwords with greater accuracy or chatting on MSN.
I then flashed my ROM and radio to the latest availible and I have not had to reset yet in over 24 hours!
I was resetting my other XDA2s with 02 ROM 5 times a day!
Flash your ROM!! It makes this thing work to an acceptable level! Media Player 10 is great too, although the buttons are disabled which makes toggling the screen difficult. Album art and media centre synching make it worth it
Nope, I would not buy another BA. Next time I want to upgrade to get the HTC Wizard. Smaller phone with built in wi-fi and WM5.
With the BA:
I have never used the slide out keyboard
I am fed up with wi-fi choosing whether or not it wants to turn on
I am fed up getting the driver low memory message on BT
I am fed up with the phone locking up up so I can't call out and others can't call me without doing a soft reset or turn on/off BT every time.
Some of you are missing the point here! Let's compare to units that are already available, not things that have not arrived yet! With the right rom combination, this is an acceptable unit! Edge is new and very limited right now,and was not available when these came out.Stability issues can be resolved by cooking your own rom! Using reasons like that,as well as "I don't use this,or that feature", is not really the point,is it!
Just my 6 cents worth..... Later....... 8)
ill still buy ba or the upcoming one
this is the best i've ever had...i started from xda1 then xda2 now xda2s...that's why i love this site...and thanks t'all the people Here...lm working at night, n use my wifi w/o problems...use my verichat for chatting or agile, surf net...play my old school super nintendo (thousand selection)...use resco to ftp my website n upload/dowload mp3's ,files etc....listen my new remix mp3's w 2gigs while im in the gym ...ayt....
With the current selection of phones/pdas in the market today, I would still buy the same IIs I have....thats considering I can still aford one
Hello all, firstly! thanks to all those good people for making these forums!
I am getting a XDA 2s from an EBAY seller, its 2 months old, what should i look out for faultwise? like testing the screen or testing for Dead Pixels.
Button testing is quite straight forward. Moving Parts, I'm a classic worrier so i'm bound to have some setup questions.
I have all the info on new firmware for ROM updates, is it best to Upgrade the ROM 1st ? this seems to make sence as I know how slow FIRMWARE UPGRADES take, hopefully ironing out some existing bugs, thats why I wait a year before I buy any peice of Tech these days.
My last phone is a battered to death Nokia 6310i so go easy on me
"I cant wait to get involved with some new BLUETOOTH nightmares."
he said sarcasticly, involving XP SP2, WIDCOMM drivers a LINKSYS BLUETOOTH DONGLE, a JABRA BT250 headset and POCKET SKYPE
Biggest complaints people seem to have with their xda 2s is either that the screen works itself loose from the keyboard, or that the screen makes a whistling noise. I have had mine for 4 months now though and i haven't seen either problem yet (touch wood!)
In terms of firmware updates, the o2 one is crap so you will need to cook your own ROM, prob from the IMATE 1.40, which is the most stable IMHO, although everyone seems to be going for the beta of WM2005.
Hope your phone is perfect when it arrives, sure it will be,
HTH
Fin
XDA 2's F*%*#*g things !
I have dreamed of owning one of the xda2 series and now in the last 2 weeks i have owned 4 of the bloody things 2 XDA 2s's and 2 XDA2i's.
With the xda 2s i had the same problem that everyone seems to get, the hanging screens the crashing 4/5 times a day!
then swapped for another 2s it was even worse took the advice about doing the corperate install work slightly better for 1 day then it crashed completely and would not even restart after a hard reset!
took that one back and tried the 2i first one was ok for 2 days then constantly reset every 6 mins again and again and again and well i think you get the picture!
I now have a second 2i I really hope it works i love these things but i would love them even more if they bloody worked!!!
Thanks FINDUS and Cording59 for your words, Just letting you know it finaly arrived, slight scratch on screen where the battery was LOOSE ontop of it in transit! stupid stupid person!, you wait till i give FEEDBACK on that EBAY sale, anyway at least it arrived and is otherwise immaculate, yes it crashes easy dosnt it wonder why they sold it?? Crashed in Explorer 1st YAY! then in just about everyother program haha bloody microsoft the nightmare biggins, although Im beggining to enjoy my MS problems in a sick twisted way, except when it comes to bluetooth. I'm still running old firmware, so the XDA is in dire need of an upgrade, but which one? iMate 1.40 or WM2005 I might put a post togeter to discuss this. my other similar post is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30223
I have an ipaq 5550 and I'm having a tough time finding any info on whether or not I'm going to be able to put WM 6 on it, and if it IS possible, how might I go about finding it. I realize the answer is probably in this forum already, but I can't seem to find it. Any suggestions?
Bump. Anything?
I'm looking for the same thing, but would be equally happy with even WM2003SE or WM5!!!
Is it possible to use Bootloader to throw on another iPaq ROM from a similarly-equipped unit (i.e. the 2495)?
I was wondering about using a rom from a similar unit as well, but I have yet to try it. You can buy an 'official' upgrade to WM5 for $40 from the HP website, but I am mostly interested in WM6. Looks like I may end up having to use WM5 after all, though.
Wait, so will you actually be trying to put WM5 on it? What ROM are you planning to use?
I was thinking a WM5 upgrade from the 2750 would be ok? The only problem I foresee is the limited ROM space, what do you think?
If someone can get a standard WM2003SE ROM from the 2750 I'd be pretty happy to try that as well!
Please let me know what you end up doing or think about this! I'd love to give my h5550 a breath of fresh air, it's still a quite capable device...
this device can't even get pass wm2003se, not mentioning wm5 or 6. bro, move on. I have this device too and was asking the same question yrs back. cheers!!
Well, OK, I'm willing to admit that it can't do WM5 or WM6, but I don't see why it can't run WM2003se. Nobody is answering my question:
Is anything preventing us from taking a hx2750 original ROM (if one could be had...) with wm2003se and slapping it on this unit? They are almost the same specs as far as I can tell, with the only differences being CPU speed and amount of ROM by 16MB. Let me know!
Hell, I'd even pay a small bit to someone if they could get a working wm2003se solution for it, since it would squeeze more time out of the device for me!
Look, go here
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...esId=322916&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1087
And click on the 'Buy Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade'
Now, it only shows you can only upgrade the hx2000 and hx4700, but I figured it might still work since I got to it from the 5550 download page.
May not be worth it at this point anyway. I know eventually I'll have to throw down the cash for a new device, but I thought I might get at least a little more mileage out of this one before then.
So wait.. are you going to be buying/finding this and trying?
What if the installer claims our device isn't on the list of approved units... do you know a way to force it?
Also, I've done a little more research about how much ROM space WM5 takes up and it's very promising! This thread talks about it in more detail: http://firstloox.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4455&page=10
Also, if WM5 can fit, then OF COURSE WM2003SE can work. It's just a matter of being crafty about installing or forming a ROM for our unit. But I feel pretty confident that even WM5 could be put on our h5550... like the WM5 from a WM5-upgraded hx2750. What do you think? If only I had the skills and knowledge to try and cook this up myself...
EDIT: I've been researching this for hours now and feel confident enough to begin trying to get 2003se or WM5 on the h5550. There's still a couple of key things I need to clarify, but I think I have all the fundamental information at my fingertips to adapt methods that work with other units to our unit. Unfortunately, I was a fool and left my iPaq charger/sync cable away and I won't be able to use it and test my theories until the 12th.
then i will hear from you again. good luck to your experiment.
Cool, let us know how it goes. I was about to try the WM5 download from the HP site, but now I can't get my 5550 to power on. I think the battery just died. Anyway, I'll have to get a new battery in the next week or two, so I won't be trying anything until then. I know... Useless post.
Trying to upgrade ipaq 5550 to ROM WM5 or WM6
Did you get your Ipaq 5550 to power up? Did you hard reset & soft reset? Did you use the normal upgrade or another 'bootloader'. If yours got to power up was it successful. I have a 'spare' 5550 here I want to try or risk an 'upgrade' with. If I know we can recover it back to ROM 1.10. There is no harm as long as we get back to bootloader mode (button 1 & 4 & reset I think)
I tried to use the Rom upgrade for a ipaq 4700, but it would not go because it knew it was a 5550 and said this was for a 4700. So until we can fool it or edit the ROM file. There is no hope.
It's been a few years and I presume there's more cooks on here that can do magic.
I just fired up my H5555 (same as the H5550) and was blown away how far WinMo has come over all these years.
anyways, instead of starting a new topic, figure I'll bump this one. Has anyone tried WM5 or WM6? I don't see how space can be an issue. I think drivers might be more like it.
If any cooks out there wants a challenge, can you tackle this one for sh*ts and giggles?
Thanks!!

@chivas228:
Guess what? I'm currently on a lookout for an iPAQ H5555 through eBay, I loved those little iPAQs and loved WM 2003, the XScale CPU in these lil devils are over-clock-able upto 530MHz from the Standard 400MHz, it can be pushed even more, and this ADDs real performance improvements.
I don't know what's happening to me, but I'm looking for Nokia 7110 although I have the HTC Desire HD, and Looking for iPAQ H5555 although I have a Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1.
Its Crazy, ain't it?

I'm sitting here fiddling with my H5550, I use it mainly to play music files hosted on my NAS using Media Control.
Would be interested in getting WM 5.0 if anybody is still even looking at these units?
A somewhat diffrent post =) but i need to say it. Just a basic huge thnx to the dedicated BA developers and programers. You seem to be in control here, and maybe its a good thing to have a phone that not to many uses nowadays (Less crowded) Thnx D-Two and Chef Tony for your never ending dedication. Made my starting point as a new user on BA forum very easy. Tonys guide how to flash this phone is just great and to the letter. Only wish you could elaborate more on radio flashing since i cant for some reason upgrade just as easy as the rom (wont accept the radio on second screen its no info at all) .. i have 1.12 and thought 1.15 could help issues i had on 6.1. Luckly i have no issues on 6.5 so far with dropped GPRS connection (weeeee).
Picked up my my old Qtek 9090 and flashed with 6.1 and then to the current 6.5 and though scary, it worked (Phew). Many years since i used a old WM device and having a Leo today, this is scary compared in flashing proceedings.
I installed some basic need apps according to me, and Opera 10 is really best on a BA in comparison to the HD2 and other new phones i used/tryed. The possibility to use buttons and arrow keys really makes for smooth surfing and next to non movment of fingures (and mouse arrow!!!). I just saw, what a breeze, a true one-man-hand surfin experience...now if i only had 3G =)
I loved my BA when it came out, and only reason i droped it for a new device was that it broke down. So why not get a new one then? Well here in Sweden phones came and went fast and when i was hoping for a replacment, it turned out they stopped importing it since they claimed it to be a device with a lot of problems ... so i had to upgrade =( (Cant say i hated my HTC Universial thou)
But 1 year ago, i helped a friend moving and guess what fell out of a box, a Qtek 9090 model of BA and since he didnt use it he gave it to me. With 6.5 now onboard my love continues. If it only had the 3 swedish letters on the hardware keyboard ... or the possibility to hold down a, and o to get alternetive letters it would be turnd in to my nr1 daylie driver.
I am thinking of scraping up some money to buy a mint condition one even. I see them on our eqviliant to e-bay here now and hen and its itchy. So thnx BA community for restoring my love for this device.
If people never scratches the surface of there WM devices they can surely miss a lot. Thnx to the dedicated work of the likes like my fav rom chef D-Two and master mind Chef Tony i now enjoy a Blue Angel that feels great and is up to date. Though i belive the HTC HD2 to be the best phone ever made, i must say, all modernazation is not of good. BA suprised me a lot in usability, and there is only 3 factors to really make it a dated phone today, despite a great dev community.
1. Screen: Man its lovly to look at with modern software but it wont help the fact that brightness and resolution and the good old angle problems is there. Its barly usble in daylight.
2. 3G radio. Being a media monster as it is, it still suffers in my point the fast internet usabillity. While still very usable as it is, if in a thight spot it takes to long to make things happen.
3. Storage space, 4GB is little for a media consumer like me. 8GB would have made it ok atleast, but 4GB just dont cut it anymore for me on a device like this.
So, there i said it. But it still dont stop me from loving this phone, and as it is, its my second daylie driver since i use 2 phones a lot. And all the Iphone users etc, they just cant get there head around what this is (there too young to remember prolly).... shall they fear it, laught at it ... they dont get it, and that is a fun disraction in everyday life. Only wish i have left was a way to boost the CPU. Remember xpuScalar and ....1 moe, cant remember the name, to do the trick. But they where pay software and apperently my key has expired at Handango (lol its only ...what, 6-7 years ago =). Prolly wont work with 6.5 anyway, wich is a shame. Btw, can you restore a 60MB made 6.5 device to original rom? Guess my Swedish rom is gone forever =( If i get a second BA i think of having this restored to original just for kicks.
Anyways, a long post for a short word, thnx once again all Blue Angel lovers.
