3G USIM in 2.5G pda - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I am tempted to go for the orange spv m2000 -although it costs more than the MDAIII- if I can use it with my orange 3G usim where I've got lots of free data allowance. Alternatively, I would go for TMobile but I would have to take one of these expensive data bundles.
Has anyone tried to use the SPV M2000, or the xda2s or the MDA III with a 3G SIM card from the same operator? Does it work?
I've read 2.5G phones would not accept 3G usim cards, but I spent the past couple of weeks in Canada where I used my Orange 3G USIM card in an unlocked Vodafone-branded Nokia 6600... and it worked great!
Any help would be much appreciated.

There is no reason why a 3G sim can't work in any 2G phone. Of course you will only get GSM/GPRS and not 3G services. I've used one in various xda's and no problems at all.
Having said that I have heard reports that sims from the '3' network don't work in xda's. Dont know if thats true.

Great
That's great, many thanks.
Are you happy with your xda? Is that the O2 one? Are you allowed to browse outside O2 active? and how much are you charged for gprs browsing?
cheers

Three Uk Sim (3g) Work Or Not?

Hi, will i be able to use the Three Simcard in the phone? it is a xda orbit. i am picking it up tonight and would like to know. thanks
From what I can remember, the answer is No, 3 monitor the imei's of handsets connecting to their network.
I remember this being discussed a couple of years ago.
It may work for a few weeks/months but you may receive a phonecall requesting your sim to be put in one of their handsets
3 is a 3G network which drops down to 2.5G when 3G is not available. As the Orbit is not a 3G capable phone I think it unlikely that a 3 sim will work in the Orbit.
Hi! I have the same problem con 3 italian sim. Htc p3300 didn't never work!!!
Have I a possibility that it works by some manner?

Old thread bump.
I have just tried a 3 UK sim in an Orbit - and I was able to make and receive voice calls without changing any settings. But as other posters have said, 3 take a dim view of people using their sims in non-3 branded handsets and may cut off your sim without warning.

Three network SIMs not working but O2 & Vodaphone SIMS ok-HELP! I'm really confused

Three network SIMs not working but O2 & Vodaphone SIMS ok-HELP! I'm really confused
Cannot find a solution either searching the forums or via Google so perhaps someone can help by answering this post:
Got an XDA Orbit that works fine when I insert either an O2 sim or a vodaphone sim (so the phone appears not to be locked) but not when I use a 3 (three) sim. When I insert a 3 (three) sim I get the message "Invalid or missing SIM card". I have 2x three sims and both do the same thing. However both the 3 (three) sims work fine in my XDA exec and Sony Ericson K610i so there appears to be no fault with the sim. So if the SIM appears to work and the phone appears to be unlocked what else is there?
I have considered upgrading the ROM but there seem to be a lot of people either turning this phone into a brick or breaking wifi (needed) while updating the ROM on the Orbit. If someone can point me to a rom that works without doing either that might be a solution.
Details of ROM XDA Orbit is running:
ROM version: 1.25.206.2 WWE
ROM date: 10/4/06
Radio version: 02.67.90
Protocol version: 4.1.13.28
ExtROM version: 1.25.206.101
Any thoughts or idea's welcome
PS. I have also tried inserting a little paper between the battery & the SIM as suggested in some of the forum posts which didn't work.
3 is a 3g network only, the Artemis is not a 3g phone.
Older 3 USIMS used to work, but when 3 noticed you were constantly roaming onto O2 (who provide 3 with their backup network, at a cost to 3) they blocked those SIMS. Newer ones simply don't work at all in 2.5g phones.
Upgrading the ROM would make no difference, you would need to change the handset to a different model to use the 3 network, but then frankly I never understand why anyone would want to.
i thought the same thing as the post above...but what made me wonder is why the 3 sim cards are working inthe xda 2s which is not a 3g phone.
maybe its not the 3 sim cards that are at fault here after....as hard as that is to belive
hey guys,
three sim cards will not function at all unless the phone is 3g enabled.
Remi
Even if the phone was 3g, 3 used to block IMEIs of phones not sold by them. Nice. Don't know if they still do that though.
update
arielc - my error, sim does not work in XDA2 (tested again), 3rd phone tested was a Sony K610i -> have updated initial post to remove error.
LargePig - The XDA Exec I have was bought from O2 and does work 100% (so far).
Gajet - I think you are right. Is there any way for the phone to fake to the sim that it is a 3G phone? I realise this is probably grasping at straws but thought I should ask just in case.
Assuming it is impossible to get the 3 SIMs to work any idea on what these are worth? I'm depressed askign this as it is a realy nice phone & I would prefer to keep it.

No the lack of function occurs when the SIM tries to register on the network I believe, so it instantly knows it can't register on the UMTS (3g) network, and because it hasn't tried it is blocked from registering on the GSM (2.5g) network.
Any 3g enabled phone should work, and there are 3g HTC pocket PC devices such as the Universal etc. but they all tend to be bulkier.
3 has to stop this behaviour because they have no GSM backup of their own and therefore they pay O2 to provide their backup, this means they make little (if any) money on those calls.
Personally I don't think 3 are as cheap compared to the other networks as they used to be, the other networks have had to try and attract customers back. You could get a SIM from the other networks for a fiver at the most. My personal recomendation at the moment is a T-Mobile Flext and Web & Walk Tariff.
As for the value of the 3 USIMS, Have a look on Ebay at what they are going for, they do have a sale value.

xda orbit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on 3?

yay i got one! but i tested to nsee if it was unlocked so i put my 3 sim in and it worked! but it comes up as orange?
well anyhow what are the gprs settings for 3
i wouldnt mind all the free 3 stuff? so anyone out there who can help meh?
ipwnage!
Hmmm, the reason it says Orange is because that is what network you are on. 3 is a 3g only network, your Orbit cannot do 3g, therefore falls back onto it's networks roaming agreement with Orange.
The worse news I have for you is that 3 will notice that you are permanently roaming which costs them money and is against their terms and conditions. They will then bar your SIM card and send you a new one which won't work in a non 3g phone at all.
If you want further clarification or to check what I'm saying head over to http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/ and ask them.

no hsdpa/3g

this is a problem ive been trying to resolve with tmobile, to no avail.
basically the data network only seems to use gprs and not 3g or hsdpa, despite me being in an hsdpa area. my kaiser with another tmobile contract sim gets hsdpa speeds fine, as does the tp2 when its got the old sim in, but this new sim doesnt seem to allow it. it wont be a handset problem and its not a coverage problem, its as if its been disabled by tmobile. for the record both the contracts are identical. (the kaiser one has a few days left in it)
ive called and emailed tmobile frequently over the last week, but they dont seem to understand the problem and cant help. noone seems to have heard of hsdpa and the last phone call lasted over an hour, with the ending result being 'we dont know'
im aware that they might have to 'flick a switch' to enable it on my data plan, but cant quite communicate with them this.
anyone got any tips? could their be a particular number/email address i could use?
They probably indeed have to flick a switch. If all else fails, just request a new SIM from them saying this one broke or something.

I have the same problem but on Orange Romania. The THC is unlocked and on the TytnII the SIM has worked perfectly but in the new TP2 no HSDPA. With another SIM from Vodafone the HSDPA is working.

You're not the only one facing this issue i see! I have had a Tmobile contract for years on the TytnII and ALWAYS had the HSDPA working fine. I got the Vodafone touch pro 2 and now the best i get is GPRS or 3G. trying the settings>all setting> advanced tab> did not help either. I guess T-mobile can enable or disable this at will especially if they can detect the device type is not a Tmobile one...
Sorry for the lame question but how do I know what my connection is? My icon with the bars changes to "3G" when I use data but I noticed a friend's phone shows "H" instead. I already have enabled HSDPA in the connection settings but still get 3G everywhere and never seen H on my phone so far.

[Q] Using a Vodafone TP2 in US, Advice please?

Hi,
I am about to visit New York and was wondering whether I can use my VF Touch Pro 2. It is unlocked for international use. However I am not totaly sure that its frequency is right for the US. Perhaps it can be used over GPRS and not 3G?
Also the prices are pretty hefty... £1.35 per minute and £3/MB for first 5MB and then £15 per 5MB.
Some good advice on the above would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam
Vodafone TP2
In US, you will roam on the AT&T network and the 3G frequencies are 850/1900. Your phone has 900/1800/2100 3g frequencies, so no, it will not see 3G speeds. You can, however, expect to get EDGE service, but that will be prox 100KBS speeds, so double dial up speeds, but much slower than 3G. OK for email, but web is dog slow. NY has poor 3G service, in general, due to heavy users and lot's of people.
If you need data, better to find wifi hotspot and use that.
Welcome to America, and the incompatible world of roaming with 3G.
MWS
Thanks for this... Useful
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
So my options are:
1) GPRS/EDGE with email used sparingly
2) TP2 with Wifi
Also I guess I cannot purchase a local SIM since my phone is a VF. Having said that I am not sure that VF have locked it. So perhaps purchasing a local PAYG SIM may be a cheap option????..... or go on hols properly and stay away from the mobi
Thanks,
Sam
Thanks all.
Returned from US. All worked fine, now waiting for my bill! No 3G though of course.
