Trimming the registry and lowering memory use - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I would like to trim the registry because, like the windows registry gets too large, it may also be a contributer to the whole system lagging at startup or normal day-to-day operations. It feel that it might be redundant to install an RSS feed reader and AvantGO at the same time. Other than the fact that RSS reader don't show images, are there any major differences as to DB storage and size after updating them 4hrs a day for 1 week? Does either apps store news information in the database or does it store all news items in the specified folder you give it?
As to memory usage, we all know that it really depends on how many today plug-ins you use and how large the dll files the system has to load. I have a few popular programs that I use on the today screen and I have some application that download weather and RSS feeds every few hours. I wonder if once the application is finished with it's operation, does it give the resources back to the system for other apps to use? I also wonder if there are memory defragmentors for PPC. Kinda like that windows memory management application where it defrags the memory and gives back at least 30% of the memory to the system.
All comments are welcome..

schap's RSS Hub default to storage card cab

Changed the reg entries in the cab so that you can just install and go. Let me know if there are any issues.
Thanks for that @venelar - I've tried searching for the post where the reg. entries were mentioned, but couldn't find it so until now my Kaiser has been RSSHub-less!
Cheers,
Mark.
thanks for that. trying to get this on a Treo 500, but it won't run. Probably because of the storage card defaults, what with there being no storage card in there.
do you know where I can get a 'vanilla' installer for this app?
This may not be the right thread, but I'm trying to find out if there is a way to allow images to download at refresh time. I refresh over wifi at home and then read my feeds on the commute to work and I'd love to have the images as well as the text! If I view when online, they download at viewing time, but the cost of cellular data here in NZ is ridiculous, so I avoid it whenever possible!

I would also love to know if there is a solution to this at it drives me crazy!
same here. Would also like the images..As far as I can see, there are no options in the menu to do that, however,, I did have the paid RSS hub beforehand, and I know for sure that there was an option available to download images in the paid version.
I highly doubt that, because RSS Hub is just Ilium Software's NewsBreak, which doesn't have the ability to download pictures for offline viewing. The only one that I know that is capable of that is SPB Insight.
(btw, I'm still not clear. I checked RSS Hub and NewsBreak, and both are exactly the same, except the title. Did schaps get a hold of an OEM version of NewsBreak or something?)
given up now
Well, I've given up now and moved to the pRSSreader. Not quite as elegant as the RSShub, but it does cache images and links (if you configure it that way) in main memory or on the storage card.

Not sure if this is the right thread for my query, but I added a podcast feed (GeekBrief.TV) to RSS Hub and although it pulls the feed through OK, each time I try to download video, it tells me there is not enough memory. I'm not sure if the error means not enough free ram to execute the operation or not enough storage memory - though I have about 77mb device storage free and over 3gb free on the memory card.
I suspect the default download location is device storage, but I can't find any way to change it to memory card. Any ideas anyone?
Additionally, I downloaded the RSS Hub .cab in this thread, but when I tried to install it I received the 'insuffiecient permissions' message...help!!

Emptying the trash - a little advice please

Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before.
I reently removed a number of old apps etc from my device to free up some space etc.
I've now noticed that the storage memory numbers have gone through the roof, sitting at 214.84mb used, 58.78 free. It was much lower before.
Does this thing have a recycle bin like Windows that needs emptying? And if so, how?
Thanks guys
Mike.
Nope, there is no Recycle Bin or Trash Can in WM. Did you use the "Remove Programs" option in Settings>System to remove the apps?
Have you soft reset after removing the apps?
trash
Hi
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I did use the remove programs function to remove them. It seems to have grown after doing that.
I don't have that many programs on the device, but don't understand why the storage space is so small. I keep all my music/videos/pictures etc on the storage card.
Is it possible to check for email attachements etc?
Thanks
Mike
I would do a soft reset first, it's likely that WinMo isn't calculating your free storage space correctly. If that doesn't work, you can also search for large files and possibly find the reason why there is so much memory being used.
There is a program called "Search" in WinMo. Change the "Type" to "Larger than 64 KB" and leave the "Search for:" field blank. This will pull up every single file on your phone (and storage card) that is larger than 64KB in size.
You could also try some cleaning tools like SKTools or MemMaid to find the pesky files. Don't forget to clear up your Internet browsing history too.
Hope this helps!
You can try Treesize mobile, this will let you see all files and the amount of memory they take up.
Another program is memmaid to clean up after uninstallations.
Thanks guys. I didn't even think about ie history! That cleared up loads.
I had a look at the file search but it did't find anything remarkable, except maybe that when you set an mp3 as a ringtone it moves it to the main memory aswell, rather than just using the copy on the storage card.
Lots of GPS trackings also got cleaned out!
I'll track down this memmaid program and give it a whirl. I was also a bit harsher on clearing old programs out and that's helped too. And email attachements.
Up to 111mb storage free and 88mb program free. I can feel the weight difference already!
Thanks again!

You can save your email attachemets to the memory card, it's in tools-options-storage

JM6 update: remove DMService "Software Update" (and other auto-starting apps)

JM6 update: remove DMService "Software Update" (and other auto-starting apps)
I don't remember seeing this background service in JK5, so I removed it (I think it's for OTA updates, probably a carrier-specific thing that should be in the CSC). Anyway, I don't like apps like this that run with full permissions.
I first spotted it using "Advanced Task Killer" (in the "Running Services" section), and I used "AutoRun Killer" to prevent it from starting at boot time. Now I decided to just moved a few APKs out of /system/app to my SD card, although one could also use Titanium Backup's "Freeze" feature to achieve the same thing.
Here is the list of files I moved:
* syncmldm.apk/odex
* syncmlds.apk/odex
* wssomacp.apk/odex
* wssyncmlnps.apk/odex
A related discussion thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811567&page=2
I will report if things get unstable, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be ok.
I went one step further by removing the background OmaDrmConfigService from /system/app:
* EDIT * DO NOT REMOVE THESE FILES ! (read on to the next post, music and video playback crashes if this service is removed)
* DrmUA.apk/odex
* SisoDrmProvider.apk/odex
I also removed com.sec.android.app.samsungapps.una:
* UNAService.apk/odex
Based on what I read on the subject, I will probably get a few Force-Close when using the Samsung media player (which requires DRM for some media types), and it seems that Quadrant fails on H264+ video decoding...never mind, I'll see how things develop over time.
I should point out that this is not exact science, I am just experimenting based on feedback from other users, with similar Samsung Android devices. I may well make my Tab unstable in the future.
I should also explain that some self-restarting "start-at-boot" processes cannot be killed by "Autorun Killer", which is why I choose to move the APKs onto my SD card (backup...just in case). It is important to understand how "Autorun Killer" works by checking aLogCat output (apparently: 9 passes/attempts to kill the specified auto-run apps/services). For example, there's no point trying to kill unstoppable processes, as it wastes CPU cycles at boot time, and it may actually end-up generating instability in the initialization phase of the device. The "Autorun Killer" User Interface displays a list of running services, so from there you know that there is no point marking them as "disabled", because there is nothing the process killer can do about it => the solution is to uninstall the offending app.
GMail is a particularly annoying one, because I use the K9 email client in IMAP/Push mode, so I couldn't care less about GMail's Pull abilities, and I don't need it to run in the background. Maybe it handles contact synchronization, I don't know. At any rate, all of my device synchronization is configured to be run manually, I don't like automatic processes that launch arbitrarily in the background.
EDIT: well, I forgot to re-configure GMail notifications since I flashed JM6 (I wrongly assumed I had restored my old system settings using Titanium Backup). So hopefully this will cure it
As for SMS messages: I had to manually disable notifications in the "Messaging" system app, and enable them in "Handcent SMS" (which is the app I use for SMS/MMS purposes).

* WARNING *
My music playback was crashing consistently each time I would move to the next song. I restored these 2 files (well, 4 really) and it is now working fine.
Yep, it looks like DRM is anchored deep into the system. Yet I couldn't find any relevant crash information in the LogCat, so it is effectively near-impossible to debug properly (I just read on forums that the DRM framework seems to be a prerequisite, so I tried that).
Oh well, not a big deal after all, I don't think the DRM services eat a lot of battery.

Yes, I had to do the same.
So far JM6 seems very quick, the web browser has faster page scrolling after you give it a few minutes. I like it.

Yeah, I quite like JM6 too.
With cleverly-configured DroidWall and Autorun-Killer (and a dash of AdFree for good measure), the whole experience is very smooth indeed.
Although the stock keyboard is improved I still much prefer the overall feature-set of SmartKeyboard Pro (and of course I've paid for it, so I might as well continue to use it )
I currently use a mix of web-browsers, including the stock app, Dolphin HD, xScope and Miren. I have yet to find the perfect combination of features, and I am particularly picky with regards to text layout and zooming (I read a lot of online content). The pinch/stretch + double-tap zooming that automatically adjusts the text column width (fit-to-screen), and that centers the page properly, is *very* important in my book. I like the built-in touch gestures in Dolphin HD to quickly scroll up a long vertical page (and other navigation features), but unfortunately the pinch/stretch zoom is broken at the moment !
Anyway, I digress ! (off-topic)
Cheers, Dan

[Q] SMS sync with Windows Mobile

i believe this is a common request but i have not found a good solution.
i dual boot from winmo 6.5 to android and want to sync SMS between them.
contacts are easy through gmail.
i have seen solutions using export csv/xml, some sort of file text string manipulation, then import but all a bit convoluted. i could do this ok for a 1-off transfer.
i do not want to replace either of the databases, only import/merge.
anyone have an easy(ish) answer. must be able to handle folders.
paid for progs are not a problem but free is always nice
(i already posted on android apps but 44 views and no replys, and now its 6 pages down )
you should bump your thread there. I dont think there is 100% compatible cross platform SMS export since usually android apps are made considering android as primary OS
@dark_prince: did think about that but on the android forum i think they already made the switch, so the one-time transfer has been done. was hoping to have more luck here with people dual booting.
i will continue searching as i cannot live without winmo yet (mostly for offline maps and gps stuff)
For offline maps and gps check out Mapdroyd. It doesn't do navigation, but I haven't found anything better for offline maps and gps, and because it uses vector maps not stored images, the maps take up surprisingly little space. Also it's free!

ok, thanks but thats the killer. i have tomtom and igo maps and navigation is what i need.
so, hard to believe that with all the dual boot, and even 2 phone people, there is not an app to sync the 2.

[FAQ] Workaround to solve the HTC mail bug (storage getting low) !

Why my storage space keep disappearing even without installing any new app ?
I'm sure that the question has been asked many times, without any solid answer or solution.
I finally find out the reason, and would like to share to everyone in xda.
NOTE :
1. The followings only apply to HTC owners using HTC mail client in a regular basis.
2. The followings apply to other HTC models (post here simply because my HTC is Desire).
3. The scripts provided below only works on ROOTED phones.
MY SETTINGS :
Using 4 POP3 accounts, check mail every 15 mins, mail size limit to 25 KB, keep 30 days, and store attachment in SD-Card. On average, I only receive a total of 30 email per day.
SYMPTOMS :
In one month, approximately 22 MB of internal storage will be gone. The space occupied may vary due to your settings and how many email you receive daily. I've seen someone in other forum, doing tests and keep losing 10 MB each day.
So, what's wrong? In short, HTC mail keeps creating lots of temp files without deleting them at all.
But the tricky part is, almost all of these temp files are having zero filesize! Every single file (even if filesize is zero) occupies at least 1 block size. That is, 4 KB in most cases. In one month, about 5800 files are created, 22+ MB is occupied. But if you try to check the total filesize within the temp folder, it may still return zero. And you will be unable to check total filesize using any file browser app, because it takes too long to process and the system will popup a suggestion to end the task.
WORKAROUND :
How to solve the problem ? A silly way is using the "Clear data" button in the built-in application manager. But it will also delete all your email accounts, so you'll have to create them manually.
Smarter way, I've wrote 2 script files (may take a while to run for the first time) :
htc_mail_tempfile_check.sh - it helps you to calculate how many temp files (created by HTC mail) in your internal storage, and tells you approximately how much space being occupied. This script simply provide information, and do nothing else. So you can use this one to check if you are having the same problem.
htc_mail_tempfile_cleanup.sh - this script shows you the internal free space, then delete all those temp files, and shows the free space after deletion.
After using the cleanup script, all email accounts / settings / messages / attachments are preserved. Basically nothing changes except that you get back the storage space.
If you want to automate the process, find "Script Manager" (free but ads) from Android Market and create a schedule task to run the cleanup script once a day. Don't forget to allow the script to run as root.
Please post your result if it helps. Let the others know if it works.
