Emptying the trash - a little advice please - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before.
I reently removed a number of old apps etc from my device to free up some space etc.
I've now noticed that the storage memory numbers have gone through the roof, sitting at 214.84mb used, 58.78 free. It was much lower before.
Does this thing have a recycle bin like Windows that needs emptying? And if so, how?
Thanks guys
Mike.

Nope, there is no Recycle Bin or Trash Can in WM. Did you use the "Remove Programs" option in Settings>System to remove the apps?
Have you soft reset after removing the apps?

trash
Hi
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I did use the remove programs function to remove them. It seems to have grown after doing that.
I don't have that many programs on the device, but don't understand why the storage space is so small. I keep all my music/videos/pictures etc on the storage card.
Is it possible to check for email attachements etc?
Thanks
Mike

I would do a soft reset first, it's likely that WinMo isn't calculating your free storage space correctly. If that doesn't work, you can also search for large files and possibly find the reason why there is so much memory being used.
There is a program called "Search" in WinMo. Change the "Type" to "Larger than 64 KB" and leave the "Search for:" field blank. This will pull up every single file on your phone (and storage card) that is larger than 64KB in size.
You could also try some cleaning tools like SKTools or MemMaid to find the pesky files. Don't forget to clear up your Internet browsing history too.
Hope this helps!

You can try Treesize mobile, this will let you see all files and the amount of memory they take up.
Another program is memmaid to clean up after uninstallations.

Thanks guys. I didn't even think about ie history! That cleared up loads.
I had a look at the file search but it did't find anything remarkable, except maybe that when you set an mp3 as a ringtone it moves it to the main memory aswell, rather than just using the copy on the storage card.
Lots of GPS trackings also got cleaned out!
I'll track down this memmaid program and give it a whirl. I was also a bit harsher on clearing old programs out and that's helped too. And email attachements.
Up to 111mb storage free and 88mb program free. I can feel the weight difference already!
Thanks again!

You can save your email attachemets to the memory card, it's in tools-options-storage

schap's RSS Hub default to storage card cab

Changed the reg entries in the cab so that you can just install and go. Let me know if there are any issues.
Thanks for that @venelar - I've tried searching for the post where the reg. entries were mentioned, but couldn't find it so until now my Kaiser has been RSSHub-less!
Cheers,
Mark.
thanks for that. trying to get this on a Treo 500, but it won't run. Probably because of the storage card defaults, what with there being no storage card in there.
do you know where I can get a 'vanilla' installer for this app?
This may not be the right thread, but I'm trying to find out if there is a way to allow images to download at refresh time. I refresh over wifi at home and then read my feeds on the commute to work and I'd love to have the images as well as the text! If I view when online, they download at viewing time, but the cost of cellular data here in NZ is ridiculous, so I avoid it whenever possible!

I would also love to know if there is a solution to this at it drives me crazy!
same here. Would also like the images..As far as I can see, there are no options in the menu to do that, however,, I did have the paid RSS hub beforehand, and I know for sure that there was an option available to download images in the paid version.
I highly doubt that, because RSS Hub is just Ilium Software's NewsBreak, which doesn't have the ability to download pictures for offline viewing. The only one that I know that is capable of that is SPB Insight.
(btw, I'm still not clear. I checked RSS Hub and NewsBreak, and both are exactly the same, except the title. Did schaps get a hold of an OEM version of NewsBreak or something?)
given up now
Well, I've given up now and moved to the pRSSreader. Not quite as elegant as the RSShub, but it does cache images and links (if you configure it that way) in main memory or on the storage card.

Not sure if this is the right thread for my query, but I added a podcast feed (GeekBrief.TV) to RSS Hub and although it pulls the feed through OK, each time I try to download video, it tells me there is not enough memory. I'm not sure if the error means not enough free ram to execute the operation or not enough storage memory - though I have about 77mb device storage free and over 3gb free on the memory card.
I suspect the default download location is device storage, but I can't find any way to change it to memory card. Any ideas anyone?
Additionally, I downloaded the RSS Hub .cab in this thread, but when I tried to install it I received the 'insuffiecient permissions' message...help!!

10MB remaining of 50MB - Clean up?

do you install all your programs on your phone or your storage card. most programs will work fine if they are installed on the storage card.

I would first delete all old text, mms, emails, call list, missed call list , then go into the deleted item folders for each one of those and delete those also, because when you delete messages( sms, mms, email ) they move to the deleted items folders. check my documents for old files /stuff you don't need anymore, move any pics , music , from device to storage card. Second you can use sktools to autoclean the phone's cache's and cookies, it removes bad shortcuts and temp folders. Now I'm not saying you'll get mayor space, but those things help quite a bit.
Also reinstall programs to SD card the only things you want on device mem is startup programs "so programs that launch on bootup" & i'd do the same with media player to take load off storage card.

Cool, thanks for the replies. I'd say just about the only media players installed on the device are what came with the ROM. I cleared out all of the old MMS messages and texts. I don't really do email on the phone because I don't have internet on my plan. I do need to check that though. I've used my wifi to get email before I'm sure...yay sktools lol

Moving One notes from main memory to storage card

Hi
I'm looking for some way to store the onenote files in the storage card instead of \Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote Mobile.
I looked in the registry but didn't find the setting or something that helps me
Anybody here has any solutions?
Is there a solution to this? My Onenotes are filling up the small 219MB of main memory and I'm getting memory full message on phone. Plenty of space on storage card, how can OneNote use storage card space instead of main memory?
cant you guys just copy the files in File Explorer and make a OneNote folder in the Storage card root? I don't know how you can have them saved on SD card by default, but I don't think copying them to the card is a big deal after you write a new note.
I'm using the HTC supplied WM6.5 and the OneNote Mobile offers no options to open files anywhere but the main memory. One can copy the notes to SD card to make space, but there is no way OneNote mobile can open them from that source even using file explorer and choosing OneNote as program to open file. It appears a limitation of OneNote.
I've asked HTC for their opinion, siince they sold the phone with OneNote and a small main memory size. No reply so far.
Got a reply from HTC who suggest a hard reset and not a mention of Microsoft or OneNote Mobile! Wtf, thanks.
Wow that's pretty messed up. Why on Earth would they suggest a hard reset? Sounds like the person you spoke with has no idea what it is that you're looking to do. I hope you find a solution to your query.
I don't know of this helps, but I use the "Notes" app located within Outlook. There you can set the program to save notes to the SD card and it saves a lot of room. I don't know if your current program is needed for your particular needs, but maybe you could try it?
Actually I replied to HTC and told them I did the hard reset and it didn't work. (I didn't actually do it as I know its a waste of time!). They are looking at it further and I'm waiting on reply with ticket still unclosed on my support question.
Basically I'm trying to get them to agree OneNote isn't suited to their phone which they have sold me and see what they respond with. Still waiting
I have writen down the solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11100039#post11100039, hope it can make some helps.

Deleting temporary files from internal memory

Hi.
i'm wondering if there are a temp folder somewhere on the internal memory where programs are being stored even tho they have been installed.
the reason is that last week, i had 40 something mb free, moved everything to sd, so problem solved.
Today i have 19mb free, i have installed some new apps, but they are installed on the sd card, so i can't figure out where the 20mb went.
I am figuring that it's probably the apk's i've downloaded which are left somewhere.
How would i go about figuring out where the 20mb went?
The cache of some applications is probably taking the space.
Go to settings, Applications, manage applications and look in apps.
Inside each app, Cache button is present.
Or, install from market
http://www.appbrain.com/app/app-2-sd-free-(move-app-to-sd)/com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd
the new version can clean cache of the applications, if you start app2sd.
t.
Yes, i've seen that mentioned somewhere else, the thing i'm wondering about, is that the 3 games i have added to the collection over a week, should that make a 20mb difference on the internal memory?
I've installed app 2 sd, and it's reporting that i've got 1.6mb cache used by apps, so not much going on here.
On the phone tap, it'll let me move maps, facebook and voice control to sd card, that's cool.
In the phone only tap, i can see those apps, which cannot be moved, i got 7 apps.
flash 11.2mb,
space invadars 4.6mb,
marked,
launcherpro 3.5mb,
beautiful widgets 1.8mb,
3g watchdog 688kb and setcpu 432kb.
On the bottum it says total 147.62mb, 21mb free.
21mb free, and i've only got those 7 apps installed on internal memory.
does that look correct to you, because to me it looks like there should be more available.
Hi,
I have more apps on "phone only", and even some under "on phone" and still 41 mb free.
And what about mail attachments and cache.
Go to mail, then settings, and see if you keep the data on internal or external storage. Check the same within the web browser.
And see if you have deleted already deleted mails from trash folder.
I can't help more.
T.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'm having the same problem, and like you can't find a solution .... yet.
I'm at 12mb free with everything possible moved to SD card.
I installed an app from the market yesterday then uninstalled it, but never recoverd all my memory, so I think, lke you there's something being left behind in a temp folder somewhere.
I'll keep you posted if I find a solution.
Bump.
As of right now i've got 8 apps installed on internal memory.
i've got 13.85mb left.
on sd i've got 39 apps, and 2.93gb left.
still no solution to where all the storage went?
the thing is that sometimes when u install then uninstall an app u don't recover the whole space, this issue has been discussed many times before, and basicly there is no temp folder from which u could delete unneeded files.the only way to recover that memory would be a factory reset

[Q] SD Card shares the same disk with os

Hello everyone..
So I while managing pictures on my SD card, I noticed something that is making dumping/importing pictures to my PC, a nightmare.
I think I have a solution, but the app (MoveToSdcard), is giving the following message: "SD Card shares the same disk with os"
Looking at some of the file/folder structure, I think I know what's happening, but I don't know how to fix without breaking stuff.
What I'm trying to do is move all apps that will every have pictures associated with them, to the SDCard. This will allow me to export (and worry) only pictures from the SDCard and delete them like I normally would with my iPhone.
Anyone know of a way to resolve this or have a suggestion on how to achieve what I'm trying to do?
Why do I want to dump my pictures? I put them on a NAS, back them up to various cloud services. I also place my none mobile photo work on this NAS an upload them as well.

I'm having a hard time understanding specifically what you are trying to do. But if the end goal is back up pictures to your NAS then I suggest downloading "Sweet Home! Alfa". It will allow you to select which albums to backup and automatically do it for you based on preference (for example, I have mine setup to do it when I'm connected to my home network and plug my phone in to charge".
You can set it to automatically delete photos off you device once backed up too if you want. Managing albums can be done through the stock gallery app or through a file explorer.
Hope this helps.
BTW, /sdcard actually refers to internal storage. So if you are trying to move apps to /sdcard, that it why you are getting the error. You are telling it to move an app from internal storage to internal storage which doesn't make sense to the app
Hi Artimis! Yea. I'm sorry about how I laid out the thread. Not clear at all. Basically, there are pictures everywhere
I use several apps - Instagram, Photoshop, SquareDroid, Afterfocus, Lapse It, Viva Video, etc. Each one of these apps either place the completed edits/export in their own folder, located in the app's directory, respectively.
When I pull out the SDCard and put it into my machine to dump/export them, not all the pictures are there, because some of the pictures are in their respective app exported folders and those are on the Internal SD.
This now forces me to hunt around and hope I've located all the possible directories and pictures.
If Instead relocate the apps to the SD card, the export folders would also be there, making it one less and easy step to ensure that all possible pictures/directories are accounted for.
Make any sense? Sorry about that.
Now the app you recommended takes it to a whole other level! This is awesome! and it detects new photo directories, created anywhere on the phone or SD card! This more or less solves my whole problem! WOW! Thank you!
As for the whole SD thing, I'm confused. Not a big deal though since all pictures and videos (all big in size) taken using XCam end up on the true SDCard. All the other pictures scattered about are not large in size and I'm not concerned about it. It's just a pain to hunt them down and dump/export them.
This app you suggested though is perfect and solves my problem, and then some!
Thanks Artimis!
wouldn't it be easier to just use Dropbox's import feature or even their auto saving of pictures? Of course letting G+ save them is also a more practical solution, I use both, and would be less time consuming
Yes, I use them as well. They work well. The goal is not to move away from any of them either. The goal is to save them locally to my NAS and at the same time, recover the space back on the device/SDCard.
The program that Artimis recommended takes care of all these issues.
I'm good! Thanks!

Does your phone actually have an sdcard in it (it would show up as something like /external_SD through the file system). As I mentioned before, /sdcard actually refers to the phones internal storage. It is a symlinked directory that emulates an sdcard but is mapped to /data/media.
So you will get this error with an app trying to move something from /data/app to /sdcard because it is actually trying to move it to /data/media/.. which doesn't do any good.
If you do have an actual external sdcard (/external_SD) then the problem could be due to the write protection changes implemented in kit kat. There are threads on how to fix this if you are rooted.
I do I have an SD card in my tablet and I supposedly already did an SD card fix for Kit Kat but I will look into it thanks.
i have micromax canvas juice 2 .... i inserted 16gb sd card but iam not able to move apps to my sd card ..... please help me
So how to make it understand I have to sent it to ad card and read data from there..
