How can I get the Wireless Card MAC address ? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Thanks

Are we talking about an SD wifi card? Look on the back, that's where my MAC address is printed.

I am talking about the integrated wifi card

Not the best nor easiest way, but I watched the log files on my LinkSys to see what devices were connected. Mine would not conenct as I had MAC filtering enabled, however I was able to see the devices MAC.
I am sure there are apps out there that will do this, I believe IP Dashboard will do this as well:

It will show you the MAC address in the 'Wireless LAN Manager" (it does on my XDA2s)
The BSSID is the MAC address of the AP (access point) that you are connected to. (if you are connected)
Below that you will see the unit's (client) MAC address

Problem is: WLAN manager doesn't show the MACaddress if you just turn it on, only when it's associated with an Access Point. (i.e. when it has a wireless link)
Just like the previous poster, I've had to disable any security on the AP to get it connected in the first place. Once its online you can pick it up from DHCP logs or whatever and re-establish your WEP/WPA/PEAP and macfiltering.

Hmm are you sure? I've tested it. I'm not near my AP, and have no connect with one, but I do see my MAC address!

Try running vxIPConfig from Cambridge Software. It'll display the MAC address for all installed network cards.

Hi,
On a related note, is it possible to see what networks/wep keys are setup anywhere?
If for example you wanted to remove one or one changed, I have never seen anywhere which lists them.
Thanks
Ian

Mac Adress en wep keys
On my 9090 I also have to be connected to an Access Point to ba able to see my Mac Adress.
Once connected go to Wireless manager, below click on the Configure Wireless Netwerks icon, then click on the network in the top window under Add New, this opens the network with name and connects to: At the bottom 3 Tabs, middle is Network Key, there is the WEP key, Disabled on my work network and Enabled with my Key on my home network. hope that helps abit.

mac address

Does anyone know how I can find out the mac address of my xda IIs ? I have a dreytek wireless router at home which uses a mac based access control list. I've tried the addresses that appear in wireless LAN manager ( BSSID and MAC ) but no joy. The only way I can connect is to switch off the access list feature completely
jeff
Hi Jeff,
Switch off the Access control, and let the XDA IIs join the wireless network. Then go into Diagnostic Tools --> View DHCP assigned addresses, and you will get a list of MAC addresses, IP addresses and hosts on the network. Match your phone's name to the MAC address.
Then you can turn access control on again and input the phone's mac address into the "allowed" list.
Thanks for the reply. I've kind of done that as you can see from the DHCP table below
DHCP server: Running
Index IP Address MAC Address Leased Time HOST ID
1 192.168.1.1 00-50-7F-23-97-CC ROUTER IP
2 192.168.1.10 00-00-00-00-00-00 BAD IP
3 192.168.1.11 00-0D-61-4E-A7-F7 0:00:04.600 hubbo
4 192.168.1.12 00-09-2D-0E-49-61 9:24:34.170
(not sure about that BADIP line ! )
I would say my MAC is 00-09-2D-0E-49-61 but it's still not working.... odd.
Is there no way that you can tell the MAC address from the phone without connecting to a network.
Here is a freeware that will allow you to find your MAC with no connection. I used it on my PDA2K.
http://www.freewareppc.com/communication/vxipconfig.shtml
Install on your device. Just turn the wifi on and run the program and it will give you the MAC and additional device info. Don't have the PPC connected to the USB or it will identify that device.
Sorted thanks, whilst in PC World I scanned for a Wireless network, and found three, hehe! Once connected used that utility to get my MAC.
Many thanks!

How do I find my MAC address?

I'm trying to connect to a WiFi AP that uses MAC filtering - the AP software doesn't show connections or logs - pretty crap software I know - but how do I fing out my wireless adapter's MAC address?
I can't believe there isn't some way of seeing this on the device itself...
Well, you can disable the ip filtering on your ap temporarily, then associate with the access point and click on the wifi icon on your taskbar (the same icon to enable disable the wifi). Your MDAs MAC address should be in the MAC box. But this only works once the MDA has established the link to an AP.
Or try the VXIpConfig of Cambridge Computer Corp at http://www.cambridgevx.com. It might work once you turn the WiFi on and will show the MAC address.
I was having trouble connecting even with MAC filtering off, but that Cambridge utility worked brilliantly - thanks for the help!
Now if only I could get my wireless connection to do something useful, like open files on my network....
Peter
I've never tried it but Resco File Explorer has a My Network tab. Just like in the Windows Explorer. Maybe you should give it a try and let me know whether it works over SMB shared windows drives.
I’m watching the Simsons. On my XDA2s. Using my Wifi connection to stream from my media server.
Bliss at last - good suggestion - http://www.resco-net.com/explorer.asp for a great app - why can't MS produce core apps like that for the platform?
Now I can die happy...

In the US, it should be on the FCC sticker under the battery. Don't know how they do it in the UK, though...
I've checked and it isn't there - good idea though - most devices do carry the sticker but I guess it isn't a UK requirement

Connecting with WPA2-PSK[AES] in WM6

I have a t-mobile Dash. I'm trying to connect to my home router/AP using WPA2-PSK. I've double-checked my network key and other settings, but I can't seem to get it to connect. Here are my settings:
Network name: GTHOME <- matches my router's broadcast SSID
Network type: Internet
Not a hidden network
Not an ad-hoc connection
Authentication: WPA2-PSK
Data encryption: AES
The key is not automatically provided
Network key: (matches my router's key)
Key index: 1
Does not user IEEE 802.1x network access control. (I've tried it both ways, with PEAP
On trying to connect, my Dash give this message:
"Cannot connect to the network. Check your network and service provider settings and try again."
The AP is a Netgear WPN824 v2 with the latest firmware. Any suggestions?
TIA
Try using a 9 letter word for your key.
I had an 8 letter key before. I tried 9 - no luck. What's magic about 9?

Guy, do you have a Mac Adddress Filter area on your router?Open your router so no key is required to make a connection and after you establish a connection use the WEP or WPA2-PSK key option! Can you find your Mac address and your Phone's Ip address on your router. You can find this info on your phone also in Comm Manager> setting> Wifi> Connection Status area. There is a place on your router to put this info, so that the router will know that its ok to connect to this device with this info, I believe its in the advance area on your router and use the 10 key WEP if possible!
Install NetWorkMagic To You System
Go to http://www.networkmagic.com and install the trail version on your PC. Networkmagic will tell you if your system is setup correctly or if their is some kind of problem. Use the network map, this will give you a good ideal of whats going down on your system......! If you cannot see your phone on the network map, then Houston, we got a problem...........!But we will fix it! Happy Thanksgiving!

Yep 8 is secure enough. try again without any caps or numbers. e.g. give aaaaaaaa a try
And see that error you mention, that looks like the one IE gives. What happens when you press connect in the wifi list?
I found that having any character other than a-z, 0-9 would cause the dash to fail to connect even though pc's and laptops had no problems. My initial key contained a "-" and "$"-- it drove me crazy trying to figure out the problem until I realized only the dash couldn't connect.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday
I double-checked the MAC address filter - it's turned off.
I was able to connect with Open Authentication and WEP Data encryption, and if I disable security altogether. Neither of these options is satisfactory.
I also tried 'aaaaaaaa' as the key. It doesn't work in either WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK with TKIP or AES encryption.
The warning I get when I press the connect key in the wi-fi list is -
"Cannot connect to the network. Check your network and service provider settings and try again."
Make sure the Key Index on the phone matches the Key Rotation on the router.

I don't think I'm using Key Rotation. Isn't that just for WEP? And, only if you have a RADIUS server? I just have a simple home network, nothing fancy.
I have a basic USRobotics router and it supports key rotation for WPA2. I had it set to 0 (meaning off), however there was no equivalent setting on my S621. The S621 could only be set at 1,2,3,or 4. When I set both the S621 and the router to the same number (in my case 4) I was able to connect.
My netgear doesn't have a place to set key rotation. I tried each key order (1 - 4) on the phone - no luck.
I even tried installing the evaluation version of CommView for WiFi (http://www.tamos.com/products/commwifi/) so I could see what each device is doing. But, I don't have a compatible adapter.
Your Router's IP Address Is 192.168.1.1 Not 192.168.0.1

For your router with IP address 192.168.1.1 with the WPA encryption, turn on the MAC address Filter and install the phone's MAC address in the router in the appropriate area, save settings (soft reset)! Now your phone will now be able to connect to your network via wifi.........!
Well, it's working now in WPA-PSK(TKIP) mode. Here are the changes I made:
I installed a new battery (my Dash started dying every time I turned on wireless while on the battery).
I removed a network called "Free Public Wireless." The Dash would try to connect to this network when it failed to authenticate on my encrypted network.
I suspect the "Free Public Wireless" network was interfering with the login to my home network. I'm just happy that it's working.
Hi, all,
I have the same problem:-
"Cannot connect tot the network. Check your network and service provider settings and try again."
After some troubleshooting, I found that this problem will go away when I set some IP address in the network adapter.
I have confirmed that my password (network key) is correct and my MAC filter are also correct.
The only changes that I can think of is that I went to US last week and connected using hotels' wireless access. No IP settings were done during the connection.
Please let me know if anyone has any idea on how to solve this problem.
Many thanks in advance.
Joe

You "guess" it's off??
Either you have it on or off.
Just log onto your router, which for example my Netgear is: 192.168.0.1
Enter your router's username (admin) as standard
Enter your Router's password (which hopefully has been changed from the standard password, which is..."password"
Click 'wireless settings'
There you should see an option to click on "Setup Access list"...click it.
Then you should see "Turn Access Control On" with a box with an option to tick or untick.
If it's ticked, then you need to go to "Add New Station Manually"
You will see "Device Name:" ...so enter your device name.
then you will see "MAC Address:"....enter the MAC Address of your phone which can be found by going into:
Settings/about phone/hardwareinfo
Once you've entered your info in the 'Device Name' and 'Mac Address' fields of your router, click "ADD" then click "Apply"
OR:
Just uncheck "Turn Access Control On" in the router, then enter your WEP or WPA password into your phone to connect.
If that doesn't work, unplug router from mains supply for 10 seconds, plug it back in then try that.
cheers

My wifi at home worked perfectly fine until about a week or two ago. Since then when I connect to my home wifi it appears to be connected with 5 bar signal but the internet is not working . Sometimes I have internet for few seconds, but than it's gone.
I tried 3 different roms including stock , viperx and cyanogenmod 11 all with the same problem.

I just tried to use my laptop as a wifi hotspot and it worked so the router seems to be problematic .
But I have 2 laptops connected to the same router and are working fine.
Maybe some bad settings
My router uses Openwrt with most settings default.

check if something like parental control is enabled or if the hox mac number is blacklisted... check also if there are conflicts in dhcp and ip reservation....
I would disable DHCP in your phone and put a static ip.
Hold down on the network name till a windows pops up then go on Modify Network>Show Advanced Options>Ip Settings>Static
IP Address: 192.168.x.128 (The X depends on what range your router is. Just do an ipconfig on your laptop to see, 1 is the most commonly used)
Gateway: 192.168.x.x (That is your router address do ipconfig on your laptop to find the 'Default Gateway'
DNS 1: 192.168.x.x (Same as the router as most routers have their own DNS)
DNS 2: 8.8.8.8 (I normally put google's )
