I have seen this question asked several times but I have not be able to find an good answer.
I want to use the WiFi bit of my XDA2s for various things including MSN, what I dont want however is when I walk out of range of the hub is the thing to connect on GPRS and start running up a big usuage bill without my knowledge. I have tried following various instructions but I still get the connecting to GPRS message up.
Is there a way to disable GPRS so it does not even attempt to connect.
TIA
Brynn
I'd also like to know. I know GPRS isn't meant to cost anything unless you actually browse the web etc, but the other day I installed the SPB GPRS monitor and told it that it costs £2.35 per Mb, and noticed that it costs about 30p just to connect! Then another 30p to disconnect! WTF is that about?!?!
Also, it DOES cost just to sit there connected!! Is there some kinda prog sending anonymous usage statistics that I don't know about?
Whilst on the subject, does anyone know if 02 UK have started charging for GPRS yet? I've never had it included in my bill but I've heard they started charging as from the 1st May.. I sure hope not
Cheers -Mike
Disable GPRS
One way is to delete all GPRS-Connections (the most of them are predefined from the provider) under "Settings" -> "Connections".
When the PocketPC has no GPRS-Connection defined it can't dial a GPRS-Connection.
Ok, I am getting increasingly frustrated trying to resolve an issue... my Xda O2 IIs keeps "waking itself up" ....aaaargh!!!
I hit the power button on the top to shut off the display (it saves power and enables me to lock the other keys from being accidentally pushed) but after a very short time, the screen comes on by itself, and I can't figure out WHY!!!!
While just sitting on my desk or out on the road, not in the cradle, I noticed, from time-to-time, that the "G" Icon at the top is often replaced by an "x" and the 'left/right sync arrows' ...so I naturally thought it was trying to connect to something.
I thought it might be trying to connect to GPRS, so I removed the connection. It didn't fix the issue.
I thought it was a Bluetooth File Transfer issue, so I deleted that connection also... still no resolve.
I checked my ActiveSync settings, and it all looks ok.
PLEASE HELP, it's killing the length of life in my battery on a daily basis!!!
i had the same problem when i was on the o2 rom, i sorted it by getting shut of the o2 rom and installing the imate 1.40 rom.... it runs faster, better and never needs soft reseting, with the added bonus of wm10.
but i kinda came to the conclusion that when the fone itself talks to the network every so often, ( ya know when u get interferance when its next to a radio or ur desktop speakers.) as it did it at those times, maybe u should stick it next to something and see if u get the radio interference, and see if it does this in flight mode......
also maybe think about removing the o2 active if u have that, and as a last resort, if no-one else can halp with a fix, maybe think about upgrading to imate 1.40 rom...
Mine did this for a while. I can't remamber the EXACT setting, but it was activesync trying to sync on a schedule (like every 5 minutes) over WAP.
If its the same problem, a bit of rummaging around the activesync settings should sort it out.
-Mike
Thanks joey jojo. Thanks mike freegan.
Joey, where can I get iMate 1.40 ??? Although, I really don't want to use the iMate rom. Ideally, I'd like to find and fix the problem I'm having with this O2 rom.
Mike, I checked my ActiveSync settings on the device... everything looks ok to me. Under ActiveSync/Tools/Options/PC Synchronization: 'Use this PC' is set to ZEUS (which is my computer name) and the other two boxes are UNchecked for 'Use mobile schedule to sync with this PC' and 'Sync with this PC during manual sync' ...then when I click on the Options button, the 'When cradled' dialogue appears, the checkbox for 'Enable PC sync using this connection:' is CHECKED and the connection to use is set for 'USB' . Then, under the 'Mobile Schedule' tab, everything is set to 'Manually'.
BTW, when I put the device in 'Flight Mode' ...it doesn't mysteriously 'wake-up' by itself.
I agree, it appears to be trying to use GPRS to 'connect' or 'sync' with something... I just can't seem to find what or where the cause is located. Aaaargh!!! Any other ideas guys?? Anyone else?
XDA III IIs IIi Waking UP
I've found that if I leave my bluetooth switched on it does this I'd love to have my bluetooth on all the time but as it does this I have it off unless I'm using my GPS.
Can this be fixed ?
Thanks Carl n Adele,
I tried your suggestion, shutting off BlueTooth, but after doing so, and then pressing the power button, the device STILL wakes-up after about 20-30 seconds. So, that wasn't the problem.
Is there any O2 subscribers that can call O2 Tech Support and ask some questions? I'd even call myself if I could pretend to be someone else. Just a thought, if there was anyone willing to help out.
i will try to get u xda support number, i work at o2 so i might be able to ask someone too... tho i guess they wont know, cos there idiots.... lol
I had this problem too. Found that Activesync was still running in the background and was using "mobile schedule" to sync via GPRS (even when set to manual), check that ActiveSync does not appear in the Running program list...
Thanks joey jojo, I really would appreciate the help!
m4ttyw, you are correct, ActiveSync was running in the background. But I had set everything in ActiveSync to MANUALLY SYNC. Nevertheless, I STOPPED ActiveSync in the Running Programs List, then pressed the Power Button again, and with fingers crossed and holding my breath, I waited to see if the device would 'wake itself up' again... and... sure enough, it did. Same thing as always! DAMN! Nice try though, thanks.
This is really frustrating me. The manual shows NOTHING about that Icon at the top if the screen (see earlier message in this thread) and what it is doing, so I can only think that is is still trying to connect or sync something... AAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!
Hmmmm, I wonder if it might have something to do with the GSM Band setting? It's currently set to Automatic, I am not sure what it SHOULD be set to for Rogers in Canada???
Darn think waking up
checked all my settings and its def the bluetooth causing my problems
Not mine, Carl... I have BlueTooth SHUT OFF and the device still wakes up by itself!!!
NEW Observation: When the device wakes-up, it takes about 5 seconds before the "G" icon changes to the 'sync' icon with the 'x' (see pics earlier in this message thread) but, I've noticed that signal strength drops off to nothing except a few dots "..." as if it were searching for a signal. And then, immediately comes back to normal signal strength.
sol
This is sometimes caused by a conflict between ur current radio stack and the frequency ur network is using.
What i mean is, the 'G' icons only represents the availability of gprs in ur current coverage area.By default, ur phone syncs with ur provider every x interval
in seconds, by which the state of gprs availability is changed (Hence, its icon) in ur case, ur pda wakes up whenever ur pda syncs with ur network. A temporary solution would be to choose a network configuration (under settings - connections) which doesnt have a gprs connection. This might, or might not cure it. The best thing to do in my opinion is to change ur current Rom ( or atleast ur radio Rom) that would definately cure the problem.
Try both solutions and post.
Sorry for my worse english.
I met this problem for several times, and it seem to cause by active sync inside the PPC.
I have to connect it to PC and have a Sync Operation, then solve it .
My Device :
Simpified Chinese Dopod 696
The Version Number is fogotten Because I had upgraded it .
Thanks gz_lgz,
I think you are CORRECT!!!! I started to think about what you said in your message, and decided to INSTALL the NEW VERSION of ActveSync 4 on my desktop pc.
After installing ActiveSync 4, I did a sync, removed device from cradle, pressed the power button on the device and waited... and waited... and waited... and waited... and waited... and waited... AND it did NOT WAKE ITSELF UP!!!
It seems there was something happening with the ActiveSync installed on the device that was not working properly and therefore kept trying to sync itself again & again, but since installing the new version of ActiveSync, it corrected the problem.
NOTE: I suppose that uninstalling and reinstalling the OLD version of ActiveSync may have done the same thing... but I never tried to do that.
Nevertheless, I am very happy that it is working properly now!!!
Thanks EVERYONE for your time and patience and WILLINGNESS to help!
Gentlemen,
After upgrading to the latest Dangaard ROM I've got a problem that seems to have the same root cause although the symptoms are slightly different.
If Bluetooth is switched on and my hands-free Logitech is paired with the Blueangel, it wakes up every minute. Once the hands-free is switched off, the device sleeps normally. Another lame thing is if the phone call is long enough for the device to go to the sleep mode (longer then 1 minute in my case), the Bluetooth connection is dropped and the sound is transferred to internal speaker.
There is no need to mention that Activesync is stopped. I'm quite sure that all these problems have something to do with the power management of the device. That's why I'd like to ask if somebody uses any additional software for the power management and if you've got any recommendation on the subject.
Hope it could help us to get rid of the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated. My device details are mentioned in the signature.
PS. Thanks to all the contributors to this wonderful forum. I must admit that the idea of BlueAngel was as great as the implementation sucks...
Update: Check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=21235
I think this workaround is good enough.
just a thought, but open active sync on your xda, and make sure that on the PC tab, the box marked 'use mobile schedule to sync with this pc' is not ticked and the other marked 'sync with this pc durin manual sync' IS ticked
also on mobile schedule tab, all selections are set to manually, and the box marked 'sync outgoing items as they are sent' is not ticked.
dunno if that will help, but its a thought anyway!!!

ah, i didnt read that before my last post, ok, glad to hear you sorted your problem out tho!!!

i get the same problem with mine - ever since i turned my active sync onto manual it started with the problem so i turned it back to automatic.. just seeing if that fixed the problem i've been having..
also Downloading the lastet Active sync 3.8 and see if that helps..
I've figured out that its Sprite Backup Software v3.0 thats causing my XDAIIs switch on all the time. Disabling the Scheduled Backup seems to resolve the problem.
However, I've upgraded to SBSv3.14 which works even without turning off Scheduled backup.
Hope this helps
Hi guys, last couple of days I encounter the following problems:
1. P3300 goes to stand-by during the night time and does not wake -up by incoming calls or incoming sms on the morning. Sometimes it also happens if the phone stays untouchable during few hours on a day time. The people on another side who are trying to call or sms me get the reply that I'm not reachable. Just switching on the black light does not help even so that the network coverage indicated as 100%. Only when I start to call someone or try to send sms, the storm of the delayed SMSes suddenly comes to my screen and then the people can reach me back by phone.
2. The pop-up message comes to the screen few times per day:
"Pocket PC networking: Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings."
Well this message starts to come very recently and I did not change any network settings before.
I do not know if these two problems comes together, but they are start to rear the heads more or less at the same time.
From the long-time installed programs I have :
TomTom
Fizz Traveller
Resco Keyboard PRO
Opera
Skype
CorePlayer
Vimio LiveTV
The recently installed programs (let's say last two weeks time frame):
Softick Card Export II
BatteryStatus (overclocked with CPU Scaler : min 143- max 260 boost)
So, guys, your suggestions what it could be are very appreciated.
If interested I have Test WWE HTC ROM 1.12.405.1_026790
During an Activesync connection in which I was transferring some files from the PC to the P3300, the power suddenly went down.
I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but after that I started to get that same message you refer to in problem 2 and I was unable to access the internet while connected via USB to the PC.
Anyway, I googled around and found this:
Solution #1 - via the GUI
In Settings | Connections go to Configure Network adapters.
Set the 'Remote-NDIS Host' settings to use a specific IP address of 169.254.2.1, subnet 255.255.0.0, and a default gateway of 169.254.2.2
Solution #2 - via Editing the Registry
Fire up your registry editor then head to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\RNDISFN1\Parms\TcpIp]
Set AutoCfg to 1
Set EnableDHCP to 0
Soft reset the device to activate the change
I've tried solution 1 and it works (so far, at least).
Regards,
cfvilela,
I appreciate very much that you redirected me to that blog.
Fixed the issue with Network message with the help of option 2.
Well, we will see where it leads me.
Anyone has the idea about my first issue?
Last evening I changed the reg values as described in order to eliminate this annoying message.
Well, this morning the Network message was popping-up again.
So , the solution number 2 does not work for me.
cfvilela,
to use the solution number 1, where did you find "Configure Network adapters" in Settings/Connections menu ?
Actually it was the reason why I choosed yesterday the second way, could you advice?
- Click the 'Start' icon on the today screen top bar, then select 'Settings' and inside it, choose the 'Connections' tab.
- Then, choose the 'Wi-Fi' icon and inside it, the 'Network Adapters' tab.
- Once there, choose the 'Remote-NDIS Host' and it will open another window.
- On that new window choose 'Use specific IP adress' and use the following settings:
*IP Adress: 169.254.2.1
*Subnet mask:255.255.0.0
*Default gateway: 169.254.2.2
*Don't change anything in the 'Name Servers' tab.
-Click OK and hopefully it should work.
Good luck.
It still works on my P3300. I use two different PCs, one at home and another at my working place to synchonize and it works with both of them.
regards,
cfvilela,
obrigado
I discovered Networks adapters in Wi-Fi, but since it was not mentioned in original blog, I was thinking that I overlooked something.
Great. Thanks again.
Same here
I have the same problems here.
The network error doesnot bother me much but not receiving calls is anoying.
After all, it is one of its main functions!
I tried the following with No succes:
1. T-mobile gave me a new sim-card. didn´t help.
2. Technical service of T-mobile did some kind of network reset thing. (He didnot want to explain any further.... I suspect he just rebooted something and hoped it would help) Didnot work.
3. Hard reset of device Didn´t work.
So, If anyone has a solution, you´ll help at least two people!
(are there more with the same problem?)
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
Still NoGo
I still have no solution.
Anyone else have the same problem? or is it just the two of us?
T-Mobile is verry unhelpfull. They prommise to return my calls but then only send an sms that I should call back, or that they are workin on it or that they couldn´t reach me (duh)....
They want me to turn in the device but I don´t want to miss it for the two weeks it will take them and only get it back with the memo "works fine". So I realy want to speak to a technician so I can explain him what the problem is.
The customer services ladys are verry polite and nice, but they really don´t know anything about technical issues.
So I am still stuck here.

Hi,
i have a o2 orbit with the original german o2 wm6 firmware. Now i have the following problem:
After 1..5 day(s) the telephone function don't work. At this point nobody can call me and i can't call out. Also GPRS don't work. The problem is that the green LED is still blinking and the start display looks normal too.
I can turn off the telephone function. But it is not possible to restart the telephone function again.
After a soft-reset the telephone function works normal for the next time periode.
Does anybody has the same problem or a bugfix?
I've got the same problem since today...
Yesterday, may be it starts, because i was not able to connect Internet by GPRS. First, the problem was happened, when I tried to connect O2 Gprs APN internet, what is preconfigured or APN (Zugriffspunktname) surfo2, thats preferred to my datapack, only in roamingnet (TD1), then even in O2's own net.
then the Phone did not work.
I've got XDA Orbit with WM6.
I called O2's Data support for that problem, they said, I should try to do an Hardreset, after save up all my configuration and keep on watching, if it happens again.
For Hardreset, look at your Manual.
...I'll tell some more about, if it works or not in a few days, when I'm shure it will.
If not, I'll call O2 again (Must) and write theyre answer here.
After Hardreset, I've got no Problems until now!
May be, it was a Problem by trying Windows Live Messenger, because he is connected to the Internet whole time. Are GPRS and Calls at the same time possible? I think, normally it should!? but not shure..
The second thing, I've tried, was the Touch flo alpha...
it did not work on my device, so i made uninstall. After that, theese Problems did come.
Hi all,
I have been searching this morning and found some possible solutions (most notably this thread) however I still cannot get a GPS Fix in TomTom 7 with the Phone Off - I get the "All connections disabled" message.
Reason for no phone is I am giong to America on holiday tomorrow and therefore will not be using the phone due to the charges etc.
Are there any definite fixes for this yet? I used the same reg settings (minus the IP and port ofc) from post #3 in the above thread but it still did not work. I also tried GPSMode = 1 with no luck.
I am on a VF ROM - could this be the problem?
MAny thanks,
DW
Just turn on bluetooth alone....should work....
Bluetooth On, Phone Off, Flight Mode Off - Still All Conn. disabled message
Thanks
indeed......you are right.....used to work on previous devices....
Sorry I couldn´t be of any help....
No problem, thank you still for your suggestion
Add a PIN to your SIM.
Switch phone on but don't enter your PIN. This disables the phone, but enables GPS.
Don't know about power drain though. Never measured this...
Don't pick up any phone calls, send any text messages, or use any data and you won't get charged.
Strange I have just tried mine in plane mode and google maps still uses gps picking up 10 sats, but TT7 cannot receive anything, so the receiver is still working, just a case of making it work.
Like you on my Tytn2 I used to switch the phone off whilst using tt abroad, fortunately I now have integral sat nav in the car, so no longer rely on the phone for sat nav.

Very true - just tried it and got the same, picked up a lock in seconds on Google. So it's TomTom...
