Blackberry Connect for Pocket PC - Cingular Customers - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Alright Guys and Gals, it's time to take it to the next level: If we want this service from Cingular Wireless then we are going to have to make our voice heard! I do not want to see this fall by the wayside because someone decides that we really did not want this service.
I challenge all in this forum to go to the following web site and send this (in it's entire context, modified, or your own rendition) to Stan Sigman, CEO of Cingular Wireless. I would request that if you modify this request or create your own that you do not use it as a Cingular SLAM session but a true request from Cingular Sx66 Customers for an additional serivce:

Send the following message:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Sigman;
Congratulations on becoming one of the largest wireless provides in the US. I hope that with this acquisition that we (your customers) or not forgotten in all of the turmoil that an acquisition encompasses.
I am writing you for a specific reason. Cingular Wireless has traditionally been behind the rest of the wireless service providers in the area of technology. That is why we were surprised and thrilled when Cingular Wireless began offering the Siemens Sx66 phone/Pocket PC device. Many of us (your customers) purchased this device in spite of the high price tag as we wanted this new technology that provided the possibility to combine so many of the different devices that we all carry on our belts.
There is another service that we are eagerly awaiting but have been told many times by customer support that they either are “not aware of any plans” or that “there are no plans” regarding this new service. The service is the “Blackberry Connect for Pocket PC”, a service that Cingular Wireless already provides (blackberry services) that would allow us to utilize our Siemens Sx66 devices to send and receive our corporate eMail and iPages.
TMobile International is already offering this service and TMobile USA is currently planning on implementing this technology. We (your customers) have purchased the Siemens Sx66 device, purchased the wireless plan with contract or upgraded per our contract. We have also purchased the wireless data plans or the MEdia Net service plans and are eagerly looking for some information as to Cingular Wireless’s intentions regarding this service and a possible release date. We would much rather receive this service from Cingular Wireless rather than having to switch our wireless service plans to another wireless service provider. This new service helps justify the expense of the Siemens Sx66 and will finally move us in the direction of a single device with many services.
I would appreciate receiving more information on Cingular Wireless’s intention regarding this service/technology.
Your Customer,
(Your_Name)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please distribute ths post on as many Sx66 forums as you can. Together we might get this service.

If anyone gets a response, please post here.

I received a call back fro mthe Office of the President. Ther Rep is currently researching internal sources to see if they are evaluating this service.
Although there are several Reps working in this office (of course the president doesn't answer his mail), but she had not heard of any other requests on the "Blackberry Connect for Pocket PC" service.
I need your help, let them know that we want, expect, and will get this service either through Cingular or TMobile (preferably Cingular)
Raptor

Received another call back. They are still researching. A couple of other Cingular customers have told me that they are receiving eMails stating that Xpress Mail or GoodLink is Cingular's Solution. GoodLink is great but does not help for the many companies that have BES infrastructures and that will not go to GoodLink.
Need more voices!

as long as you have blackberry service on your account with cingular you should be able to use your BlueAngel with BB Connect installed on it ... I'm a cingular customer but my blackberry is on T-Mobile, i'm using a multi-carrier SIM so i have both Cingular and T-Mobile accounts programmed on the SIM .... i don't have problems with the P910 as well as my XDA IIs

difensore: i agree with you, however i cannot get the cab files anywhere for blackberry connect for pocketpc.
if you could post them on the ftp site here it would be greatly appreciated!
Raptor

CAB files and desktop client files, too!
Thanks in advance on behalf of all of us suffering Cingular customers...

I am not too smart, so forgive my question: What would this service buy us that the XpressMail (Cingular service programmed by Seven) doesn't?
sorry for my ignorance...

BBConnect
Raptor,
The BBConnect .cab is actually in the BlueAngel folder of our FTP site.
i'll look for it but it should be here ...

difensore: The one that was on the FTP site was a german build for TMobile. You stated you were using a version in Americal on Cingular's Network.

Those of us that use RIM devices (aka Blackberry Interactive Pagers) generally use tham as they are required by our companies, are instant (push), and have other features. There is no need foor a desktop client to be running on a PC, and are much more reliable and stable. The Xpress Mail service is very unreliable, pull, and has to be reset too often on the device and the desktop PC.
Raptor

Yes I checked, this is the germain TMobile version. an English Cingular version would be greatly appreciated and assure your honored place on this board...

Exact differences btw O2 XDAII ROMS 1.72.181 & 1.72.187

The upgrade instructions from the O2 website are for v1.72.181 and say if you want the GPRS to stay on when you are making or receiving phone calls then you should use v1.72.187, but 1.72.187 is not compatible with the software they also offer for free to upgrade at the same time. What exactly is the difference between the two, and is 1.72.187 REALLY incompatible with the other software, or what? Does anyone who has v1.72.187 have experience with whether this really works or not, or what? I thought these phones only had one receiver, so how can it be tuned to receive two things at once, or is it just an automatic reconnect at the end of a phone call for the internet, etc? Does it depend upon the carrier you have for GPRS? Is the reconnection robust, or flaky? I don't want to use 1.72.187 if it isn't completely stable. And why isn't it compatible with the other software upgrades they offer at the same time, and where is the 1.72.187 upgrade, I can't find it anywhere on O2's website!?!?!
Firstly, there are minimal differences between the 2 ROMs; at present the 1.72.187 has been removed from O2's site, though I think SourceO2 still have it.
The essential difference is that 181 includes the new Blackberry client for those who want Push email etc. and 187 doesn't. There have been reports of some O2 resellers (like CPW) being unable to offer BB and Web access on the same account, which can be a problem, as the BB APN is essentially a WAP connection and won't allow POP3 email, or MSN access.
Both ROMS are compatible with the extra new programs- TrueFax, Zip and Fonix VoiceDial. The downloads of the ROM update are now IMEI checked, and the new apps check for an O2 UK V1.72 ROM.
The GPRS issue is not important for most users- the disconnect while on a phone call only operates for non standard GPRS connections. Blackberry and normal GPRS will stay connected.
As you suggest, these devices only have 1 receiver, but GPRS is a service which works on top of the normal phone signal- like you can make domestic phone calls whilst using ADSL for surfing, so essentially both are using the same signal and tranceivers.
I have used 1.72.187 since the day it was released (I chose this as I don't need Blackberry) and it has been very stable. The add-ons installed and ran OK, but I don't use Fax or voice dialling, so have since deleted them.
BTW- to use the fax software, you need to ask O2 Customer Services to issue you with a dedicated fax number on your account- this is free of charge and is added to your existing SIM card, and you just pay for calls as normal on that line.
Thanks for your information. I can't find the .187 ROM anywhere, even on source02. Anyway, I am in the middle of upgrading to the .182 ROM. Here is my situation: I have a SIM card I got from T-Mobile when I purchased an XDA I from them about 18 months ago. About 9 months ago I purchased an XDA II (new) on Ebay, the seller told me it was unlocked, it wasn't. Anyway, I found and successfully used the xda2unlock program on this web site and have been happy with it ever since, with the same SIM card and the same contract from T-Mobile. Now I am running the .182 upgrade, wish me luck!
Is .182 a T-Mobile ROM? I haven't heard of this version in UK. If your XDA II was originally not from O2, then you may not be able to access any O2 ROM's, as the downloader now checks the IMEI number for a genuine O2 device.
I upgraded the Pocket PC with no ptoblem to .182. No, as I was saying above, I purchased the unit from Ebay, it is a tru O2 XDAII. Everything is working fine.

Blackberry for XDA2s

Has anyone got any news on this topic, 02 say January?
How about a search on this site? A great number of us have been using BB service since 1.72.181 came out.
BB for Blue Angel... not XDAII
Dear k_kirk,
I believe that houssie was looking for BB for Blue Angel (since he posted his question on the BA forum), not for the XDAII serie (an 1.72 is clearly an XDAII rom).
I am looking for that too.
You're right of course. Apologies to Houssi & all offended.
I've been in touch with O2 who advise they are planning on a ROM upgrade at the beginning of next year to include Blackberry Support for the XDA IIs.
I was in a store in Glasgow and they advised to download the XDA II rom as this is effectively the same(!) but needless to say I didnt download it and sought advice from O2 Data support.
T-Mobile are only pushing Blackberry on the RIM devices at present, no idea if they are planning on extending to the MDA and Orange are just trialling Blackberry with the business customers at present - again no information on the SPV.
On a sidenote, it took almost 6 phone calls to various "customer service" individuals until I got a definitive answer.
Also, does anyone know if Vodafone are releasing their version anytime soon as the Company I work for use Vodafone and I'm pretty sure they'd be interested in it.
Thanks
D
justa little note that i have a xda2 device with blackberry on it. could someone tell me what its for?

FWIW, T-Mobile DE just released the BlackBerry Connect software for their MDA II's, so hopefully that's a good sign for the rest of the T-Mobile international companies!

Its 'push' software for email, it'll send your mail rather than having to dial up and sync with your mail account

Blackberry and XDA IIs
Is there an alternative to Blackberry for the XDA IIs in the meantime. I was using BB on my XDA and is was excellent - having just upgraded to the IIs, and found no Blackberry I'm in a slight dilemma.

See this post:

Unfortunately, the demo its offering appears to be scheduled retrieve rather than push - although if you go onto the smartner website, O2 UK is listed as being a partner. Strangely enough there's nothing on the O2 website about them or the service.
I've signed up to the demo and it seems ok, although I'm not convinced.
Oh and the demo will only allow you IMAP or Pop3 access, no desktop client or anything for corporate email.
Maybe once O2 offer it properly it will be a proper push service.
Have you looked at O2's xmail? Again its a retrieval service, although they're offering a 3 month free trial and it will hook into your existing exchange environment by way of a desktop connector - downside is that your pc has to be on permanently for the service to stay connected.
http://www.o2.co.uk/xmail
Cheers
Ok, I'll give the smartner a bash - got to be worth trying for three monthst - by then, maybe BB will be available on the IIs
Thanks
Ahhhhh.....seems to work....interesting.
Only allows one email account though :-( Shame!!!!
Give xmail a bash - its not restricted to O2 customers from what I've read in the [email protected] on the pages, and you can add up to two other accounts to that for it to poll them for you.
Just about to test it meself, I'll let you know what happens - problem [email protected] got is that my SSL certificate is self signed and their servers dont like it - time to enable non-ssl comms i think.
Added my home email to the xmail profile, but it still only accesses the part of the setup thats connected to the desktop connector.
It is possible to access the other mail via the web portal, but not much point since I can just configure it via pocket inbox.
Roll on Blackberry
Tried xmail when it first came out - was a bit flaky to say the least. And of course you needed the desktop client to be running for your XDA to get the mail!!!! Which is no good for me.
Like you say - bring on the BB rom update - cannot be that far away now really - especially as it works on the XDA II - how different can it be!!!!!
t-mobile releases blackberry for MDA III
t-mobile has released an update to the MDA III with blackberry i"m using it and it's great note that the rom is 1.22.01GER I tried loading the cab to the english 1.22.00 wwe but it doesn't work. iT DOES DOWNLOADING OF ATTACHMENTS and calendar updates over the air.
I take it you have subscribed to a T-mobile blackberry data plan?
Oooooo sounds interesting...not sure I want to learn German though for the use of Blackberry!!!!!
Yes, the 02 version on XDA II will do attachments too - very cool indeed.
We just need 02 to get themselves into gear and release a rom update!
Not sure if you've seen it elsewhere on the site, but apparently O2 havent arranged a support contract with RIM, so until they do I suspect we may be waiting.
But if they can do it for the XDA II then they must have something in place for it!!!!!
I have emailed a few people I know at 02 this evening to try and establish what the state of play is.
Quite frankly the more I think about it, I can see me sending the IIs back to them within 14days!!!

News on T-Mobile MDA III (UK) Rom Update

rI am told by a reliable and senior source within T-Mobile UK that they are shortly releasing a further ROM Upgrade. Thank heavens for that
And before everyone says that they have already upgraded etc.. this is of specific importance to:
1 Those who don't feel comfortable puting a different ROM on; or
2 Those like me who use Blackberry which won't work with any radio other than 1.0 and 1.6 (unofficial confimation).
Anyway watch this space because I am told end of June will be
the date. Please also pass on this news through the other fora as a lot of users are posting wanting to know about T-Mobile MDA III updates.
Thanks
J
Thanks for that info - I wait in anticipation.
Do you know any details of what issues the new ROM will address? Does it have WMP10?
MDA Unlocked ?
Jiggy
I notice your signature mentions Tmobile MDA III Unlocked.
Havin just got one yesterday I want to look to doing bloody everything on it.
Firstly, use it a a phone.
2nd - Sync it with my Mailbox on Our Exchange 2003 server which is fully accessible from the Internet. - I' think i understand that to access this server, i need to use GPRS (and also seen how expensive it is - 7.50perMb).
But what/why do i see all this unlocking terminology on these boards.
I assume there are benefits ? if so could you tell me what.
Thanks in advance.
David.
The "Unlocked" simply refers to the phone being either locked to a single provider (E.g. TMobile etc) or able to accept SIM cards from any telecoms provider. If you put a different telecom providers SIM card in your phone it either works or displays a locked message with a request to put an unlock code in.
A great number of supplied Blue Angels (And other XDA type devices) are being shipped locked to the provider who supplies it. For people who are travelling abroad and use foreign SIM cards or people who simply want to swap SIM card for a different provider are stopped from doing so.
This I feel is a very annoying situation as most providers lock you into a 1 year contract if the phone is subsidised and then refuse to provide an unlock code for that year. This is unacceptable and is simply a money generating exercise in these situations (Providers will tell you it is to stop people purchasing the phone and then disappearing with it without paying but they can block the IMEI number of the phone to stop this anyway!)
Hopefully that answers your question and allowed me to have a little rant!
Jiggy
Thanks. Totally agree with your comments.
David.
MDA III Updates/Unlocked
As regards the post quering my device being unlocked - T-Mobile UK will unlock one of its devices for £15 after 1 month's use. They did not make me wait for 12 months (the term of my contract). I happily paid this, as it is a relatively modest amount, compared to buying out the contract . They are one of the cellcos in the UK who will do this.
On the updates thread I will keep everyone updated. My contact as much as admitted that they view this site as a helpful way of getting the updates to end users. So unofficial Kudos, as always, to xda-developers

So he has worked out were he can download the cabs to install in the T-mobile Ext Rom, think he will be able to download a radio version that is newer?
I can also confirm this as the nice man at t-mobile who assisted me with enabling blackberry last friday told me that there is a patch coming soon., and that we should be informed by service message
MdA III user
LOL and Bump I like your thinking MDA III User . Good to hear from you haven't spoken in ages. You never know they may just about have taken the hint.
I am one of those high maintenance customers but I spend a fair amount so they humour me!!
J
Hi,
does anyone know what level the update will go to as I am unsure whether to wait for it or just go ahead and upgrade to 1.40 now cos I really cant be bothered to do it twice if the tmobile one is going to be better somehow :?
Any help would be appreciated
i spoek to t mobile last week while sorting out my mda 3 and they said that they thought the update would be about in september. She said that they were currently doing testing on it before the release.
however, she promised me that when available it woud be published here!

Currently they have the rom i am running.
Keep your eyes peeled for it!
Thanks for the link I have updatred wiki
Any more news on this subject??
T-Mobile have gone silent
My contact at T-Mobile has gone silent on me. Despite voice mails and emails requesting an update on a) what is in and b) release date of an update. Never a good sign :?
Can all T-Mobile customers start bugging them with me as this is the only way to raise the priority of this issue.
We still do not have WMP10 or an updated radio stack (you cannnot use BB connect with anything other than 1.0). Although with the no sound problem on certain ROMs perhaps we should be thankful!
Stength and safety in numbers on this one
I've been checking this link weekly since this thread began with no joy. Now even the link no longer works! I gues this won't be happening then!
it works
you should go on connect and then mda3 then rom upgrade and download it

Which SX66? AT&T or Cingular? There is a Differnce!

I just received my new Siemens SX66 from my Cingular provider. I tried to upgrade to the 1.33.110 firmware from the Siemens Website and got an invalid Country ID Error. In Contacting Siemens, they said that I have an AT&T variant version of the SX66...
So my Question is, since AT&T does not really Exist anymore, will my AT&T Variant SX66 be supported by Siemens/Cingular?? Should I return the phone and switch to a Cingular Plan?
I dont want to be stuck with a phone I cant upgrade or be forced to toss because they get rid of the AT&T SIM Cards or something...
Thanks,
Scott<-
In a word, yes.
If there is in fact a difference, then you're likely going to continue to have problems, unless and until Siemens makes modifications to the ROM to allow your unit to update.
If you are/were with AT&T, and then got absorbed by Cingular due to the buy-out, the quickest way to an answer is to return your current unit, and then "switch" providers to Cingular and get the SX66 from them.
I hope that helps. Good luck!
Thank you for your reply.... I had a feeling that this might happen. )-;
Now after all the people I know and have spoken with at Cingular/AT&T, there is no one who will understand my issue to help me out... I'm sure of it...
Any Advice?
Yeah... scream and yell until someone listens. Talk to managers and supervisors. Talk to regional/district managers... Talk to Level 2 tech support.. Someone there MUST listen. If they don't, return everything, import a PDA2k or XDAIII from O2 via eXpansys USA and then pop your SIM in the slot. That's what I did... Cingular doesn't even know, and doesn't NEED to know what phone I'm using. They've said that much themselves.

Blackberry Connect - T-Mobile UK

For those who have PM'd me my apologies I haven't had time to reply as I have been earning my salary more than ever over the last few months (good for the soul )
Yes Blackberry Enterprise Solution and Blackberry Client (or whatever it is called both work. The Rom was published many months ago and there is a cab file with the BB software in it posted on this site.
I use T-Mobile so I cannot speak for other networks.
To get BES in particular to work I recall the following:
1 Speak to T-Mobile to get the relevant service book set up for BES.
2 Downloaded to my laptop the desktop software available on the German T-Mobile site (again do a search the link is on here somewhere)
3 Gave my BB Pin to the very nice folks in my IT Dept - they are genuinely great
4 At this stage they registered my PIN on the BES server or whatever it is they do but they got an error and the Server wouldn't talk to my device.
5 One of the IT guys experienced in this said it was a problem with my SIM as it had to be specifically enabled at T-Mobile's side for BES to work.
6 I called T-Mobile and they denied this was a cellco issue initially  but then I transferred their expert to the in house IT guy and low and behold they admitted that it was a SIM issue  (To be fair T-Mobile have been polite and helpful to me up until recently when they have gone silent on the issue of when they are finally releasing the mythical upgrade to the MDA III software).
There you have it. As much as I know about getting BES working which is really just anecdotal as I don't profess to have IT skills. One thought I did have is that those gurus on here who have put the cab file on their machines and done everything they can are probably being blocked by your network. Ultimately they have to enable your SIM card and have inked a licensing agreement (I suspect) with the lovely RIM folks.
Good luck anyway and I hope my post has been of some small use.
J
