VPN and Terminal Services Client with XDA IIs - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I used to use the XDA to VPN into a Windows Server, then control it (for problems) with Terminal Services Client. No problem, worked fine.
With my new XDA IIs (original ROM) I can't figure this out at all - and the instruction manual provides little info.
Any ideas?
What I've been doing so far is:
To set up the VPN conn:
[start, settings, connections, connections]
edit my vpn servers
new - (e.g. vpn1 212.123.123.123) - enter logon info
To connect on the VPN (maybe where the problem lies)
I click on the sig strength icon and choose Mobile Web
Then click again on the icon again, and choose 'vpn1' (weirdly this option seems to come and go)
Also, there seems to be no way to see if you have actually succeeded in connecting to that IP address
Now when I look at the sig strength icon... it says 'O2 Active connected'.
Needless to say, if I use TSC at this point, no luck.
Any ideas? It does not seem a very intuitive process.
Thanks

Hello,
Just moved over from a XDA2 to an XDA2s myself and been having the same probs. Check you work connections and make sure that you remove the O2 active setting from the modem tab. This appears to be the prob.
Now when you hit the signal strength icon, you should click on VPN1 only and it should go out through Mobile web and then initiate VPN when it connects.
However, mine is still having an issue with the password!!! Something very strange is happening and I can't work out what it is.
I'm still playing around with it, and will post when I work it out.

Sorry to be dumb, but >>remove the O2 active setting from the modem tab. << - how to do that??
This system must be the most counter-intuitive process I've encountered!

I used TSC through VPN to connect to my work server with my XDA11. Set up GPRS connection, set up VPN with my user name and password, enter the right server name in TSC and hey presto. Simply go to programmes, TSC click and the device connects to GPRS and then automatically to the VPN via GPRS and on to the server.
Now have a Qtek 9090 (XDA2s equivelant) on WM2003 second edition and whilst it will connect at first to my server, it won't connect a second time. After a hard re-set it connects once but never again. I have tried other devices and they do exactly the same. Anyone know what's going on ?

WiFi problems

Hello.
I've got a rather anoying problem
I can't set up my device to automaticly choose to use wifi for programs that accesses the internet.
This causes the phone to enable an gprs connection every time i try to access the internet instead.
I have sucsessfully set ut the phone to connect to my wifi network and the communication works (skype runs)
In troubleshooting on HTC webpage you can find these instructions:
On your handset, 1. Click start > settings > connctions > connections > Advanced >Select Networks: Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using: "Internet".
My problem is that the option "internet" dosent exixt in the menu, can i have missed something in the setup?
Are you by nay chance using an O2 orbit? If so this is a 'feature' that O2 have introduced to make themselves richer. Check out the other posts on this subject

So what is the best way to get around it??? Another program to help us disable their "feature" and allow us to access the setting we need???

a message comes up at the top of the screen saying connecting : o2 Active
If you have wifi on as well they both appear in the connectivity list.

I prefer wifi to GPRS
I've the same problem. No answers for me in the rest of the threads. I can't select mi wifi connections without ti disable the GPRS connection.

Hi,
First post here.
I experienced similar problems just like you. What I did was to ring up O2 and asked them to disable GPRS on my line because my XDA Orbit was defaulting to GPRS connection whenever I tried to connect to the Internet using WiFi. I told them that I was very unhappy about it. Needless to say, they promptly disabled it.
After this, I saw an X on the title bar, where the GPRS connection used to show up (next to the signal strength).
I no longer have the default GPRS connection whenever I try to access the Internet via WiFi. This means that I can now surf the Internet from my PDA without having to incur any data charge.
kiwi992.
Well I have no problems, it all works as it should, the programs use the connection already established or connects to GPRS. If it is plugged in on USB it uses that. If you make a Wi-Fi connection it uses that. If you don't make either of those it connects to GPRS. But it won't look to make a Wi-Fi connection first. None of my devices have done that, not just the Orbit.

That is done on purpose as a security measure, you can not have two simultaneous connections (except if your using the phone as a modem when you can have USB & GPRS.)
Hi, Maskedmaraudore. Thanks for your answer. For me the problem isn't it: often I've both connections simultaneously (I supose, both are connected but only one is working and carrying out data, it's clair).
Problem is: with both active connections (wifi correctly started and GPRS available), but no sessions initiated, I run any program having an automatic connection to internet (explorer, outlook,...), and the device starts a GPRS connection without use the current, and able, wireless connection. Why I must pay with GPRS having my home wifi active???
I've the program "NO GPRS", that I found in this forum, I think, but not always I remember to use it: I only want that HTC choice wifi if it's available.
Thanks,

wireless problems on my Orbit

Hi All,
I have a problem with the wireless connection on my Orbit.
When I try to connect to the internet the first time via my router I am assigned an ip address via DHCP and everything works fine. After I have left the device for a couple of minute and try to connect to the internet I just get the message Locating from the internet explorer and it will not connect to the internet unless I reboot.
I have tried the following to try and resolve.
Assign Static IP Address and DNS Servers
Removed all Encrytion and Mac Address filtering from the router.
I have tried to stream internet radio to see when it drops the connection.
Tried continuously pinging the router deafult gateway.
Disabled powersave options.
I would like the device to always stayed connected so that I can send and recieve Skype calls
Has anyone else experience this problem ?
I have exactly the same problem with you (my device is the HTC P3300) and I have tried everything you mention -apart from the ping and streaming audio - but no effect whatsoever.
I suspect that the problem lies with my wireless modem-router (USRobotics 9108) but I have yet to find something useful for it. Others I have asked have no such problem.
Someone mentioned that in "my network connects to" in the wireless network adapter settings we should check "Work" instead of "The internet". Haven't tried that yet though.
Do you have the same problem with other types of internet connection e.g via usb?
USB and GRPS work fine! It is just the wireless that has the problem, it seems like the device is loosing it's connection to the router even though it retains an ip address. When you try to ping from the phone to the router you get timeout request.
Even when you release and renew the ip address it still will not work, the only way I have found to make it work is either to reboot or turn the wireless off then back on.
I just wonder if there are any timeout values that shutdown the wireless connection after a certain amount of time?
Some remarks...
I used Media player with streaming audio via wifi and guess what? It didn't stop a couple of minutes later as I expected but kept playing for 15-20 mins. The P3300 was on power supply all the time. Then I quit from Media player and browse the net for a while. After about 5 mins... here we go again. I beleive that IE has some kind of counter that when exceeded (data, time?) it stops connecting. The funny thing is that afterwards neither media player streams nor skype worked.
On the other hand I tried skype on a new session without ever opening IE and guess what? It worked like a charm for about an hour... It never stopped responding. Now what do you make out of this?
I thought it may be IE causing the problem so I installed Netfront 3.3.
Same problem! I don't think it is the browser causing I have the same problem with Netfront.
When the connection goes I use pocket lan to ping from the phone to the router and do not get a reply.
The fact that we can stream music/video and use skype for long periods of time with out problems leads me to believe that once you initiate a constant outbound session from the phone to the router it is fine but as soon as disconnect this session this is when the problems start.
I think there maybe a registry setting for the wireless card may need changing.
I will check later and post my findings....
Any luck with our problem?
Could it be a ram allocation thing to do with IE? As I don't seem to have this problem with the WIFI but I do find that my orbit slows down to an unacceptable rate during IE use or until I use space reclaimer etc.

I don't beleive so, because my P3300 is working as it should except that it won't download any pages after a while. If I check RAM afterwards is pretty much acceptable. The machine will not slow down at all it just stops downloading as if the connection is broken (but its not).
make sure under settings/connections you have a a setting called MY ISP, if not then make a new one.
then go to settings/connections/advanced and "select networks", make sure BOTH say using "MY ISP"
then go to settings/wifi and click on network adaptors and make sure it says "my network card connects to the internet
Voila all problems solved !

I certainly don't have "MY ISP" !!!!
How can I add one? the only thing I can see in this screen is "internet" in bold and below "add new modem connection", "add new VPN connection", "Proxy server...". When I choose "add new modem connection" it asks for my modem type (GPRS, irda, bluetooth, COM1) and afterwards "call number" and such...
Which one should I choose for MY ISP?
I think that there used to be a "MY ISP" but I must have erased it...
go to manage connections/add new
Thx for info, I figured it out...
no problem m8. any other problems give me a shout, I have only had the Orbit for around a week but have sussed most of the problems out including loop resets etc.

I'm having trouble and can't figure out how to do the setting for the internet. Can anyone post a step by step guide on how to do it? TIA
When u say settings for the internet do u mean for wifi?
Yes, I mean for wifi
First of all read the manual. Or try the following. If all fails try to be more specific about your problem.
1. Make sure wireless network is up and running.
2. Press Comm Manager and press wireless icon.
3. Usually it scans automatically for nearby networks
4. If a network is found is announces the network's name and if a connection is desired.
5. You enter password (WEP, WAP, or whatever u have)
6. Connection established.
It is recommended to use in "start>settings>wireless network>power" the slider in "better performance" setting. Leave others as is.
Tip: if u open Internet Explorer before a connection is established (check for the apropriate icon) then it connects automatically with GPRS.
Network/Connection/Communication Manager for my HTC Artemis/XDA Orbit
I've got a problem with my device's connection Manager in Setting/Connection/Connection. I am able to add any connections using ISP, GPRS, bluetooth... but can only use the last one added. I have no facility to manage these connections or switch between these (this is rather strange, I've always been able to manage this on my previous devices).
I am therefore left confused with this. I have tried to download a communication manager, but this one did not work.
Any ideas from anyone?

VPN and Remote Desktop

Hi Guys,
either I dont know how to search or there is no info on VPN on the forum(I probably dont know how to search) In any case. I need assistance. How do I setup a VPN on my TyTn running WM6 and also how do I get remote desktop client? I am sure this was around previously. Did MS remove it from WM6? Or was it HTC? It this is the case.. how can one get it back?
thanks!
here's remote desktop. How do you use it? I don't know how to set it up.
thanks!!!!
now for VPN....
cheers!
The remote desktop client is available in several places in this forum for download.
To set up a VPN:
add a new VPN server connection
enter the name / ip of the server you want to connect to
select the vpn type -- ipsec or pptp
next
enter your user name and password
finish
The only way I have found to connect to the von is to goto
Start-Settings-connections-connections-edit my vpn servers- -- tap & hold MY VPN
select connect
you must be using a plan that assigns you a public IP (not WAP)
hope this helps

Thanks cmccarter, done it but how will I know I am connected.. It does not say connected anywhere that I can see and when clicking/hold on the item it gives me the option to connect again, not disconnect as I would have thought The other thing is terminal server does not connect. It connects fine on USB. VPN/Remote desktop connects fine using normal internet on pc from outside the network. So I believe the network settings are fine.. How would I know though if I am on WAP or get an IP. Also ow would I know if the VPN is connected?
thanks

i also have struggled getting rdp to work over a vpn, in particular over 3+/hsdpa
the only i found in wm5 was to add the vpn connect to the exceptions list of the connection manager, so that it didnt disconnect the vpn whem connecting the rdp.
this occurs more when u use an ip address to connect to a work intranet.
suppose if u use the dns name of the machine and not the ip address then it isnt that much of an issue. in wm5 when u put the ip address in it assumes a an internet rather than intranet connection so it disconnects the vpn to look for the ip over the internet
putting the ip into exceptions forced wm5 to not disconnect it when rdp was looking for it.
i cudnt get it to work this way in wm6 so i am also looking for an answer on this.
rdp to my servers when they have crashed and i am on the road wud b wonderful....
Hi,
I've a similar problem.
I use a VPN-1 SecuRemote that normally connect my PC directly to the company network.
Well, using the share modem tool, I'm not able to reach the gateway.
the share modem system give me a private IP that establish a connection between PC and TYTN.
This connection use the Tytn like a gateway to navigate in internet.
Someone know to solve this issue?
Tanks a lot
if i select start the vpn connection, nothing happens - and i can`t ping the IP`s in the VPN. so i think the vpn ist not open - OR the routing entrie is missing....
is there some shiny "pptp - standalone" client?
greets, Nik
for some reason i dont think the vpn option works over 3g/hsdpa, atleast not on my device using t-mob web and walk.
if i connect the vpn when using wifi it connects and everything is fine, if i try and connect when i'm already running a 3g connection it doesn't work.
i dont think the radio stack is capible of handling a 3g connection and a vpn connection. we might need to go down the route of getting a seprate wm vpn client.

Help XDA Orbit wireless through PC

Hi guys,
Having some trouble connecting my Orbit to the internet through wi-fi...
I set my desktop to share internet connection through wireless and have been surfing on my laptop via this for ages...
Now when I switch Wi-Fi on the orbit on, it finds the network, put my WEP key in and it connects... then when I go into IE and go to a page it says "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings click "settings"......."
When I click settings it just takes me to the page that says
"My Work Network
Add a new modem connection
Add a new vpn server connection
Set up my proxy server"
Can anyone help with what the heck I need to be doing to get the internet working?!?!
Cheers
GK
UPDATE:
Whilst I was typing the message (supposedly still connected through wi-fi to the internet) the Orbit beeped at me and message said
"Unable to obtain a server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network Settings"
Could that be whats causing the problem and how can I fix it?
Cheers
M
Solved my own problem thanks to the BBC website...
What are the chances of this happening on the same night as I get my XDA and try to set up my wireless...

Lmao, so is everything working now ?

How to share my pc's internet connection with my MDA Compact III??

Hey Everyone,
I have just upgraded my device to Windows Mobile 6 so I had to install Activesync 4.5 and I would like to access my pc's internet connection (which is adsl) when it is connected via USB. But when I connect my device via USB it doesn't seem to have access to internet at all even though it should be automatic as far as I know. I guess some things should be done in settings but don't know what they exactly are. Would you be so kind as to help me by writing every single step I should take to make it work?
I would also like to access my pc's net via Bluetooth but I think it's going to be more difficult to set. I have a bluetooth adapter with Bluesoleil software and I don't know what I should do to synchronize my device with pc via bluetooth using Activesync 4.5. I guess after making it work, accessing my pc's net via Bluetooth wouldn't be a big problem.
I hope you have ideas what to do.
Thank you for your help in advance!
when in settings->networking->usb to pc->enable advanced network functions is checked
and connetions->advanced->select networks is set to my work network
when ever the pda is connected to activesync using usb or bluetooth
the network which is being used is that of the pc
unless the pc is set to otherwise
Thanks for your short reply. I have done as you wrote, but it still doesn't work.
at settings->connections->connections->My work Network there are 4 things:
-Add a new modem connection
-Edit my VPN servers (I have tried to add a VPN server but didn't know the exact settings)
-Set up my proxy server
-Manage existing connections (I have also added a cellular modem connection and *99# is supposed to be dialled but I didn't do any other settings)
So I guess there are things here that should be changed. For example at VPN, what should be the name of the Server? My computer's name? and there's a part at which it requires a Username and a Password and also a Domain marked with a *. What should I write in these fields? The usernam and password that are set to connecting to the internet on my pc or something else?
I might have to check the settings of my as well, I guess. What settings should be checked on it?
Thanks in advance!!!
I might have to check the settings of my pc as well, I guess.*
Sorry I left out a word.
settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks
dropdownbox is set to my work network
to spell it more out
It is set that way, but it still doesn't work. This is why I think I should change things either on my pc or in My Work Network settings (the 4 menu points I mentioned). But I did everything the way you wrote in your first reply and despite this fact it still doesn't work. So I'm out of idea
