Battery life

I've just got an MDA3. Is the battery life really that bad? With wifi/bluetooth off, radio on, backlight on maximum, writing for 25 minutes constantly to SD-card (making a backup), it went down from 100% to 88%. Also, does anyone have experiences with the mugen extended batteries?...

usually lst a bit longer if u turn the backlight down to lowest without turning it completly off. only use things when u relly have to. and if u travel get a car charger, its a real lifesaver. dont use vibrate cos that uses a lot of power, its the screen that uses the power the most,i find that if i turn the battery meter off that my battery also lasts a little longer. the other day i used wifi for a minute,and i forgot to turn it off, within an hour i lost 60% of battery power.
and id like to har more about extended batteries!

I always turn off WiFI and BT when not in use, stanby mode ( phone on unit off) I get all day out of one charge. But start playing games or internet with WiFI and I'm lucky to get 2hrs out of 1 charge. I also use an auto charger and have a seperate USB sinc/charge cable with power connector to recharge at work.
1 of the downsides of the Qtek, but it is better than the iPAQ 2210 that I had before.

I purchsed an Mugen extended battery from Lion Battery http://etxquc.simplyonline.com/
I got a version 2 2200mAmp battery and it works fantastic. There are a subset of people that have had problems with the battery, but Lion has been great about exchanging them without complaint.
There's a version 3 coming out thats 2400.
I say well worth the cost myself. Its taken my Sprint 6600 from a recharge once a day minimum to a 2-day pda.

Battery Problem

Hi. I have a Voda branded TP2.
I have installed the 1% battery indicator and have realised that the battery is dropping at an alarming rate. In two hours without any data activity, just two calls of 5 mins each and the battery has already reached 74%. The number drops in front of my eyes. Quite scary actually.
Anybody else faced a similar porblem?

2 things I can advice you (as a TP2 beginner)
-First times: charge up to 12 hours non-stop even when light is green (has nothing to do with phone but with the chemical proces inyour battery) this will prolong lifetime
-This TP2 WWE ROM has a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of background running stuff compared to other WM 6.1 - ROMS. So you thing it is not using any current but it is!
Maybe you could install advance task manager and check out all running programs and processes ...

Had a strange one last night. Went to be, put the phone on charge (was about 16% iirc), and the orange light came on to say it was charging. Then, this morning at about 3am, I hear the phone making bleeps. Check it out, and it's at 5%, with orange light flashing. Take out charger, put it back in, and it starts charging. I went out afterwards, came back about 4.30, and it says it was about 80% complete. Go sleep, wake up about 7.30am, and it's fully charged (green light). Then, I unplug charger, turn on, and it says 96%, and I notice it dropping the amount of charge in front of me (like OP's notice), until it got to about 91%.
Now, about 5 hours later, it reckons the charge is 74%. So dunno why it went down so quickly, and why it didn't actually charge... But will keep my eye on it and see how it goes...

Another way 2 keep your eye on it: check data connection (start>settings>connections>comm manager) a lot of stuff open this connection which uses power. if it turns on without you knowing .... (especially auto-update plugins (weather?)), sometimes AS also ...

I really don't know what to think of LiPo battery management, so many different theories.
Also, something that annoys me is that I fully charge the TP2 overnight, in the morning the lights green. If I simply unlug charger and plug in back in it well go back orange and stay orange for a good half hour... and I can start again a few times...

To be honest, I had to hard reset my device couple of times and haven't had time to 'fully' recharge it after the resets.
I guess I will give it a few days of full charging and then check on the battery.
But, I am not joking when the 1% battery meter just drops numbers faster than a meter at the gas station.

I had this problem when I have push mail turn on. If you disable push mail and set it to receive like every 15 mins, it save the power a lot.
Try the advance config to auto disconnect every x mins, this will helps as well.

yep your source isn't to bad. Beginning with full charges (6 to 12 hrs instead of 3 like the manual says) isn't about the old charge-memory story (because Lithium-Ion battery don't work this way, only the nickel-cadmium and nimH do) but about fully charging cells.
I mean the best way to look upon this is like a pile of bricks on top of each other (all different cells if you wish). So the first time it is important to give all the bricks enough time to charge - so even when it says 100% it does not mean that it has (you're indicator is a feedback of a reading by your cpu). So not all the bricks (let's say) have the same quality (yesyes even in this day and age of hight teck).
So you can also take this parallel to discharging: if you discharge fully, you risk that one of these bricks get busted and so will NEVER recover.
So i agree on this with your source a LiOn batter is bettery served with frequent partial charging and must NEVER be drained completely

I put the TP2 on for charging the whole night (about 9 hours). In the morning the LED was green and the battery meter said 100%. I took the charger off from the handset and re-inserted the tip in. Guess what? 95%.
AM not sure if it is a battery problem or handset problem?
Its come down to 73% with just one phone call of 5 mins. Mail is on, but its on manual and havent pulled anything since morning.
Any idea?

Battery drain with Desire on alcohol

Hi. I know there are hundreds of threads on battery usage, but I felt I have a special story behind my test.
Lately I feel that my battery life has decreased, but I would like some second opinions on the case.
It's over a month now since I received froyo OTA, and I had some suspicions that my battery life went slightly down after that. I used it more to test the new features, so its hard to really know. However, the big problems occurred a couple of weeks ago.
At a party with a friend of mine, a friends friend literally pulls my Desire out of my hand and drops it into a mug of beer! As a joke!!
He had heard me taking about my Nokia 3720 earlier and decided to test it. However, ignorant as he was, he did not see that it was A DIFFERENT PHONE I was holding!
So it took 2 seconds in the mug, and the screen went black, and the phone was dead... Or not really, I took it out and dried it of with my t-shirt, turned it on, and the screen went garbeled green on me...
Decided that it was best to leave it alone, so I took out the battery, SIM and MicroSD, dried them off, put it in my pocket and continued the party.
But I have to admit it was kindof a partypooper for me...
Well, later that night, probably 3-4 hours later when I got home, I inserted the battery and tried to turn it on.. Screen turned on with the familiar white background, and green htc logo.. and some garbeled green at the top, argh...
I took the battery out again, left all the pieces spread out on the kitchen-counter and went to bed.
The morning after (or should I say afternoon ) I looked at the phone, it seemed as it had dried out over the night. So I put in the MicroSD, SIM and battery, crossed my fingers, and turned it on. And it worked fine, like nothing had happened, phew!
But some days after, I am sure that the batterylife has decreased quite a bit, seems to not hold a normal 12-14hour day with normal use.
I did at one point post-froyo (pre-drowning) have it running for 2 full days before charging, approx. 40 hours, not very much usage though..
So, I decided to test it starting yesterday evening.
I let it drain fully (turned it on 1 time after it died, and let it die again). Charged it while turned off, and unplugged it and turned on after approx. 1 hour of full charge (green light).
Now, I have already ordered a new phone (a Streak is on its way over the North Sea as I write this . But I wanted to do the test just for the heck of it.
My girlfriend also has a Desire running Froyo, and I notice she uses her phone WAY MORE for gaming and stuff, and only charges a little more frequent than me.
They are both AMOLED phones, I got mine in Feb, she bought hers in March.
So, here comes the timeline:
@23:30, Turned it on after fully charged, went through all homescreens to activate all widgets. Did not run any programs.
I have no specially data intense widgets, only email and weather (3hr sync). Wifi off, and 3G (H) on always, no active background.
@08:00, On my way to work, Battery indicator (i use *#*#4636#*#* to check battery status) at 88%, recieved 1 email during the night.
Battery usage says: 49% Cell standby, 49% phone not in use, 2% android system.
I have noticed my phone struggling to keep connections while travelling even short distances(pre- and post-froyo), maybe a little worse of a problem post-froyo.
Did not happen today though!
I often need a reboot to get the connection back (Flightmode often works 1 time, but not 2 times. does not activate the second time I try it, just hangs...)
It's not only the data connection, there is no cell reception at all (apparantly).
Maybe I should start a thread on that also, but it is not a big issue for me (this phone is on a free use data plan, almost never use it for calls)
Dataplan here in norway costs around 50$ btw, no other extra costs for tethering and such in norway
@09:45, at work, recieved 2 more emails. now @84%, on EDGE network. battery usage: 53% Cell standby, 45% phone not in use, 2% android system.
not that bad actually... 10:21 "on" time, with 34 minutes active-use time.
Will try to leave the phone alone some more, and do some surfing on it around noon.
@12:55, still at work, used the phone for surfing and gReader for 25 minutes, on EDGE network. Downloaded a BOL revisited episode (podcast), I usually listen to an episode via bluetooth streaming while driving to/from work.
Now @67% and 35°C ( I noticed an temp. increase). Cell standby 47%, Not in use, 41%, android system 9%, screen 3%. uptime 13:35, waketime 1:07.
It connected to H (3g) the last 5-10 minutes or so of surfing. Turned on Wifi when I was finished, to see if I notice any battery decrease.
@14:25, did another 15-20 minutes of surfing, this time on Wifi, now @62%. also was a quick trip via google maps with gps on. battery usage states: Wifi usage 3% and google maps 2% already.. seems they use a lot of battery in a short time.
Wifi is set to turn off after 15 min of inactivety.

Read that. Do a teardown and clean everything, you're out of warranty anyways.
Most likley a drop/smudge of beer etc inside short circuiting something and you'll have a slow, but increased battery drain from that.

Not sure if I will take the time to fix it though, I'll have to see how much I miss it when I start using my Dell Streak

@15:35. On my way home from work. Writing using voice recognition on android. Battery level is currently @ 46%. Downloaded several emails, and 1 reply. Now connecting bluetooth for BOL streaming.

Okay now i'm home, after 40 minutes of Bluetooth streaming battery is @36%. Stats are: cell standby 39%, not in use 34%, android system 15%, screen 5%, WiFi 3%, Bluetooth 2%, maps 2%. Times are: 17:07 total, 2:49 awake.

@18:15 Surfing for 15 minutes now over 3g, and battery icon is orange.. level: 27%, awake time is now just over 3 hours.. I think it has held up quite good today, but I have really not used it as much as I normally would. And I also have a suspicion that using less WiFi helps a little on battery. Previous I have used WiFi always on to save 3g usage, but maybe it decreased battery.. anyone with a comment on that?

[SOLVED][Q] Battery issues?

Wondering if anyone else has had any battery issues? I went to sleep last night with about 85% or more battery, and 5.5 hours later my phone was dead....when i plugged it in for like 5 minutes to call my work and tell them i was going to be late...when i got to work my phone said 45% phone idle and 45% cell standby for battery use

none here - took phone off charger about midnight, this morning after alarm rang for the full 10 minutes, it still showed 100%
i've been watching it and am really impressed with battery life - is it possible you've got a program running in the background? - i had Startup Auditor to stop apps in the background but had that from before, on my Vibrant
on the vibrant,running a predominantly black wallpaper, screen brightness at 13%, putting phone in "airplane mode" when i sleep, keeping GPS off, data sync off etc, it'd be down to 17-22% at end of day before going back on charger
this G2, running live wallpaper (thunderstorm), no efficiency moves (ie GPS off, etc), screen brightness at 50%, phone still had 34% last night before going back on the charger - and the battery has not "conditioned" - i noticed on the past 2 phones batteries life got better after the first few weeks of use.

Nothing different than my nexus...and i was thinking maybe it was a game but that should have been killed automatically and i dont think it would say phone standby and cell idle if it was an app would it?

tonite you might try putting the phone in airplane mode when you go to bed, and turn off GPS
see what happens to battery drain overnite - if it diminishes then i'd look at what apps you've installed. there was an article on engadget not too long ago that some researchers had analyzed the 358 most popular apps, and found 30 were reporting data to their "mothership" that had not declared it or asked for permission to report data.

well another weird thing is, that when i bought the phone and brought it home, usually it comes with half battery and thats what it showed but i had to charge it quick with no apps really installed on it yet...Im charging now and will test to see what happens with battery...i just removed off alot of my apps.... to see whats up

I'm getting about 10 hours with regular usage though I wish I knew why Photobucket keeps starting everytime i kill it.

I hope you guys charged the phone fully before you used it first. That can play a big role in battery life.
I got my phone yesterday and haven't done any calibrations yet. I've been playing with it like you normally would if you buy a new smartphone. I took it off the charger around 9pm last night and at 7:32am right now I have about 60% left. So roughly 10.5 hours later and I've only lost about 40%. I'm very impressed by that. My vibrant would have been dead by now, it rarely lasts through the night if its not on the charger.

What's your time with out signal, sounds like the 50% bug to me, google the airplane mode fix, if not you might want to look into a new radio, and you should allways recal your battery after you flash

what do you mean time without signal? and cant flash the build or radio without root(if thats what you meant) im fully charging it now and removed all of my apps...and going to see what happens from there

I've been using mine off and on mostly text, web and speedtests for 4 hours off the charger and my battery is at 91%

Problem With Battery

Hey guys, I just got the droid incredible 2 and I first had the LG revolution but the 4g and the screen size made the battery drop down quick. I played with it for 20 minutes after it being fully charged, changing settings, and the battery went way down to about 80%. So I exchanged it for the HTC Incredible 2. They told me the batter was way better.
I went to the Verizon store to tell them the batter dowesn't last as long as expected. My Iphone 4 would be on all day, texting, pandora, email and web browsing and I still came home from work with battery left. My droid gets used from 7am to 1pm and its pretty much dead by then. They made me change the background data off, sync only email and weather, and download juice defender.
The batter still dies by 12:30pm after charging all night.
I have read all over people are getting excellent battery usage but I don't really know what to do to get the same. It is not temp rooted. Any ideas? Also, at work, in the building the data coverage is not so good so I usually do nothing but text on it and it still dies by 1pm.

I can't really say how well mine would do on the standard battery because I bought the extended battery immediately after getting the phone. I've been unplugged almost 15 hours and have 38% battery and I have sent/recieved 40-50 txts, 20 mins phone, browsed internet for 30-45 mins, played games around 30 mins, and listened to pandora for around 45 mins.
I would recommend the extended battery, it's $50 at verizon and I haven't even come close to killing it in a day.

Does the extended battery make the phone bigger? I'm thinking it would be thicker on the back. Would it have any drawbacks as to cases and stuff like that?
I'm not sure why mine is so bad, prolly because I am in a secure building and signal doesn't get through constantly. I'm surprised, I thought my iphone had bad battery.

the extended battery does have a thicker back. and yes, there are currently no cases for it, so there would be an issue there if having a case is very important.
as to your current battery, if your in a biulding with bad signal, that will most defintiely affect your battery life as your phone will have to use more battery to try to find a good signal. additionally though, the phone battery does seem to improve after about a week of charge/discharge cycles. not sure why this is, but i have seen it on my phone and seen many other report the same.

The battery sticks out a little more than 1/8th of an inch I would say. However, IMHO it protects the camera lens and flash lens from getting broken and I never really like using a case anyways.

I have amazing battery i charge it to 100 percent unplugged after then go to school texting 100-200 average everyday internet music by the time i get 3:00 i still have 80-70% and i'm 13 so imagine how much i use it and it still stays at that percentage

Having a phone in a building (or anywhere) the signal is weak is a drain on your battery. If your iPhone was with AT&T the signal may have been stronger where you work than with Verizon and may have therefore contributed to better battery life.
Also, if you didn't FULLY charge your DInc2 and FULLY discharge it right when you got it, you should really do a factory reset and immediately do the following:
Charge the phone for at least 8hrs with the power off, unplug for a few minutes, plug it back in. The light should only remain red for 10-20 seconds before turning green, otherwise this unplug-plug part should be repeated a few more times always letting it remain on "green" for an hour before unplugging an plugging back in.
THEN power up and use the phone until it shuts itself off because the battery is drained. Let it sit for a few minutes, and turn it on again. It should sut itself off again pretty quick. Let it sit, turn on again. Do this until it wont power up at all after sitting untouched for a few minutes and your battery is then fully discharged.
Now you can plug it in and start the charge part of the cycle as lined out earlier. Once the light turns green 10-20 sec after plugging it in again you have completed one "cycle".
This may sound excessive, but I'm kind of a nut about this kind of thing.

I didn't do anything special when I got my I2, am a realtively heavy user, and have an all day battery life. I'm pretty careless with my features being left on.
If you can't get it to last all day, either you are a much heavier user than I am or you do, in fact, either have a battery problem, or a battery calibration problem. You shouldn't need to calibrate the battery algorithms, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

I wouldn't say I am a heavy user. I normally text while I am at work and check facebook a few times. I also listen to pandora most times. I work for Vanguard and most people here have Verizon I believe. I was told when I switched from AT&T that signal should not be a problem where I am at. My Iphone 4 would get used much more and it too would have signal problems as well until I turned 3g off but it would last way longer than the droid.
I guess I can try the factory reset and full charge cycle this weekend but I'm not sure what Verizon can do for me either so it may just stay like this

this is bump charging no? (well the part about how to charge it). i spoke to am htc rep that said that bump charging will significantly decrease the lifespan of your battery life and therefore is highly not recommended.

I just got mine on Sunday, but even yesterday I was texting and surfing a fair amount yesterday and went to bed with the phone at 61%...
I am sort of amazed, I think Verizon has taken the underclocking thing and put it to work on the official release... at one point I turned off the screen for what amounted to an hour and when i turned it back on it was still the same battery level.

if your comparing battery life on the dinc2 with 3G on versus the iphone with 3G off there will also be a pretty big difference. if your tuirn off 3G on your dinc2, i would imagine battery life will be similar or better than your iphone had with 3G off also.

No I was comparing the Inc 2 to the Iphone with 3G on. My iphone would also last longer if I turned 3g off and just used Edge or whatever it is called. I don't think I can do this with the droid until it is rooted or download an app to do this.
I turned off juice defender and we will see how it goes today. I don't really like apps running in the background and it was turning off data eacht ime the screen locked.

I think the biggest difference is the verizon signal. The battery on this phone is amazing for an android device. While it is still nowhere near iphone 4 status as far as battery, it shouldn't drain like that. Have them either swap you a battery or the phone itself.
I'm a relatively heavy user. Especially with voice calls and I can go a day and a half easy.
But I also run launched pro with only a couple of widgets. To me sense is a battery hog.

Well, lets be honest, one of the things Apple really puts a lot of time and effort into in their development is long battery life. It wouldn't surprise me to see the iphone outlasting most Android devices.
In any case...
While I don't need to, I do charge my phone while at the office. If you have a desk job then I don't see how this would be problematic. My work day usage includes 2 hours of bluetooth streaming (in my car to the stereo), media playback (music/podcast), and mapping with gps and 3g data (this drains my battery pretty quickly, but that's relative...it's about 15% per hour). Outside of that, my battery drain is quite low.
I only started charging at the office because I like to keep my battery as full as possible in case of extended emergency that requires being away from a charging source. It's that whole boy scout be prepared mentality I have. Besides, if you have the opportunity to charge, why not? It seems to charge pretty quick anyway.

I can charge at the office, but normally I forget the cord at home. Not a problem to buy another one but still. I was just concerned because I hear people getting 15 some hours on one charge and as of right now, my battery is below 50% since I just got back from lunch.

take it back to the store, and if that doesn't work then call. but the store would probably be a better bet as they can give you a new phone or new battery there whereas the phone support, you'd have to wait for the shipment.

Seems as if they were not able to help in store the first time. Rather than have someone check it out, they had someone come over and tell me I should turn off all the sync and data features. So I did do that, but then why did I get a smartphone?

It's possible you have an app that is not allowing the device to sleep. If it can't sleep, it will drain the battery much faster. You might get 8 to 12 hours awake yet idle.
Are you using many third party apps? If so, have you considered going through them, removing them one at a time, until you find the battery doesn't drain so fast anymore?
If you go to About phone in settings, then Battery, the last item will show awake time. This should be much lower than your Up time.
