New UK O2 1.72 roms - Future? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

OK, so the wait is over and we finally have, to our dissapointment the Official O2 1.72 roms. Yay! (not) So we've had to wait longer than all the other operators we got their in the end. I have to admit i'm tempted byu the xdaIIs, as i cant see much further support for the poor old XDA II. When there was still hope of a WM2003SE update I could see a reason to stay with the device as its by far the best PPC ive ever owned, but now i'm looking at other options(espicially now i got my p900 - now theres a phone!). I'm a bit pissed that when SE was launched several people had beta releases of 2003SE on their devices, however none seemed to want to discuss the release. Now with no chance of an update being released how about some feedback from the people who actually USED the upgrade? (And if some kind soul posts the file we'd all be eternally gratefull! Anyone who wants it that bad wont care about it being 'unsupported')

bump!

Upgrade to WM5.0, Reassurence needed! N00b!

(reposted in correct forum)
Hi folks,
I was interested in upgrading to WM5.0 from WM2003 on my SPV M2000 (=XDA 2???I'm told it's a blue angel...). However since I've come here i've got the impression that it could be riddled with problems. I'm a total n00b and I've been overwhelmed with different ROM versions and fixes....I wondered if you folks could help me a bit.
Is it worthwhile to upgrade? What has your experience been?
Will old WM2003 programs work on WM5.0 (I have loads of them)
Are there any bugs I should know about or will everything run smooth?
What are the disadvantages?
How do I go about upgrading? I upgraded my ROM once before using an update released by Orange. But the .exe file did it all for me. All I had to do was connect the device via the cradle and click next (pretty much).
Cheers folks! Much appreciated.

PS - is this the correct forum? (I'm guessing SPVM2000 is a hymalaya)
PPS - sorry if some of these questions have come up before. I'm sure a few of them must - I checked as best I could but I'm a total n00b and I'm dyslexic which doesn't make post plodding easy.
Thanks again!
help please! Some of you guys must have some ideas or thoughts that might help me!
Like you I also have an SPV M2000 (yes it is also known as the Blue Angel), and I am still running WM2003, I have done a few ROM upgrades etc so have a very basic understanding but even so am still holding back on upgrading to WM5, my main reason is that my phone is for work, and so need it to be reliable. saying that it sounds like that they have done some fantastic work porting WM5 onto the Blue Angel and one day I look forward to running it (which may be very soon).
Sounds like to me though before making your decision you should read this..

And this

And I REALLY hope you have read the Wiki page which is here...

As with any upgrade there is a chance you will turn your device into a brick, so you need to read thorugh all the previous posts, there is a search tool to allow you to search the forum (USE IT!), I am sure people here would love to help you but have a bit of respect and search the forum first, I expect every question you could think of has been answered before.
Somewhere there is a list of software that has been tested on WM5, cant be bothered to search for it, but I have seen a post on the forum somewhere!
EDIT:
Sorry didn't read the bottom part of you post, that will teach me!! Hope the links I have given you get you started though!!!
Dont bother with WM2005 yet. I tried it a month ago and found little glitches. Overall it was good, but eyecandy doesnt justify the upgrade. Speedwise it's the same.
Also, there's still not as many WM5 programs, as there are for WM2003. Old progs may have issues with WM5. For me that's reason enough to stick with WM2003, since I need stability.
If you hard reset your phone, install only progs that you really need AND use, you'll be amazed how quick and stable it'll be. Yes, BT and WiFi are flaky, but that happens right across the board on all OSes/ROMs.
PS. Avoid any crap that goes onto Today screen.

And Latest Update from T-Mobile UK

Hi,
As per the post below on O2 I thought I would drop T-Mobile an email.
Here is the reply
"Good afternoon.
Thank you for your email.
We had thought about providing an upgrade to WM6 for our devices, however we have decided against this. It was decided that our phones ran well with WM5 and to concentrate our resources on releasing our new MDA Touch and, in time, MDA Vario III with WM6.
Kind regards.
Paul Byrne
T-Mobile"
I am have been monitoring the various WM6 roms on this site but I was holding off on updating my MDAC3 to see if T-Mobile would update it. Seems like that ain't going to happen.
Bugger, may have to take the plunge with one of the ROMs on here.
Regards
take a plunge mate, use the uspl tool and then upgrade, its easy if you follow instructions,
thats T-mobile for you though, they dont look after there customers properly. shoddy i say. its not like they have to pay for it. they could even just get hold of the original htc copy and put there code on it for there branded device. ndont take much...
im using the new rom with the htc touchflo included, and its bloody awesome.
ive been running a few WM6 roms without any problems on my MDACIII.
Ive been running the 3.5 rom recently which is great and as we speak im upgrading to 3.7.
Please Delete.
not a scooby but its a higher version and im a sucker for the latest and greatest.
Please Delete.
Would I have to unlock my MDACIII if I am to also upgrade the ROM to WM6 of which is available here?
No, but you'll need to download and run the USPL first.

WM6 Question for an ATT 8525

I'm asking your opinion, should I just wait for the version of WM6 to come up on the HTC website, or is this ATT rom on this website legit? I'm skeptical to update because I'm not sure whether I can go back to the WM5 with the recent upgrade from HTC.
What are the ups and downs of updating to WM6? And should I bother or just wait for the 100% official HTC version.
ryan
that's entirely up to you. Some of us can't wait to try the latest and greatest, others are a bit more cautious.
Read some of the rom threads and figure out what you want.
Yes, you can go back to the OE roms, but I believe if you install HardSPL the OE rom doesn't undo this. So that may be another point to ponder.
If you're worried about warranty or stability, stick to the OEM roms.
However, there's some fine WM6 roms out that you should do well with. Better yet, read even more and make your own. Everyone has their own comfort level, but you gotta start by reviewing what other people are doing and why.

How did we solve the SDHC mystery?

I'm no looking for anyone to reveal any state secrets, but Bepe's masterful cracking of the SDHC issue has come after many months of trial, effort & failure by many people.
Can any of the ROM masters who are privvy to this new magic explain to us interested end-users just how the problem was actually cracked?
Was it just the use of a new driver from somewhere or some registry setting that hadn't been tried before or something else?
Just interested how, after all this time, we've found a solution (that even HTC didn't know of or build into their very recently issued WM6 rom), that so suddenly fixed the issue and could be built into many of the bespoke ROMs already available.....
What was the magic ingredient?
I second that !
I'd love to know, as HTC told me that it was a hardware issue. Maybe their way of trying to persuade us to update to a newer phone?
Thanks for the hard work guys. Haven't updated yet as can't afford an HC card.
extremely interesting question that i would also like the answer to.
Hi,
Question not thee, for thy shall not receive the answer thy seek.
Just say God bless the great BEPE. He's opened new doors for our devices and now there is a hive of activity all over, because we have this great ROM and SDHC driver - something that had evaded this great Forum for a very long time, despite several efforts.
Long live XDA Developers, long live all the other heroes in this Forum. You know who you are.
Something that I don't quite understand though - the great Bepe has taken a back seat and nobody hears of him anymore since he released his unique ROM. I guess he's cooking something else. I just hope that Microsoft or similar hasn't snapped him up.
THANK YOU GREAT BEPE. DANKA, DANKA, DANKA FOR THE SDHC.
Kiwi992.
Of course we thank BEBE very much for all the nice job done. No questions about that, at all.
But, still, I am also curious about how the stuff worked out.
Maybe

As simple as that? A new release from Microsoft of WM6....
If it was that I'm slightly deflated that it wasn't down to some ROM cooker mastery......
But then the update did only come out on 11th October, so the timing is right and also that would explain why HTC failed to get SDHC working in their official WM6 ROM, as that came out before this general upgrade was available.....

{closed topic 19 Nov}Official HTC/ATT US Rom off line or being upgraded?

The official HTC/ATT US Rom has been off line at HTC's Support thread for the last three days. I wounder if their is a newer ROM getting ready to come out.
Back up Now
I contacted them about it and they replied that it's a server error but the only thing I can think of is that the release file name no longer matches the link in the support download area of their site. Time will tell. I'll update this when I get a confirmation or the link starts working again.
New File Location
ftp://att8525rom:[email protected]/RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3.62.502.3_6275_1.54.07.00_108_UOOS_SVN05_Ship.exe
I believe that there were a few posts regarding the AT&T rom, they had an announcement that the ROM is going to be posted for only a limited time, Although i am not sure if it is until the 18th or not.
On the site it says it will be available from November 1, 2007 to February 1, 2008.

i saved it on my hard drive if any one needs it.
Yes I have it also but was just surprising to see that the file is off line for the last 2 days. Could mean an update is coming I hope that may fix some of the problems many have been having. I have been useing the official ROM for about 2 weeks now in Florida and it's been running really well with no problems in radio except maybe a little less signal than what I had before running WM5 with radio 1.4x.
Anyway just started this thread as a means to keep an eye on the official to see what goes with it.
I also downloaded and now using the official wm6 from htc. I like it but no msn home anymore? gotta go online to check my hotmail? sucks! still no youtube streaming. other than that I like it a lot. I called htc just the other day and they said their site link is down because they are waiting for user reviews on it to release the final version in just a few weeks for the htc hermes/8525. they said the final release in a few weeks should fix any or at least some of the bugs in the pre wm6 release they put out for a short time.
I hope it's sooner rather than later and bug fixes are always welcome. I'm sure if they patch it up the cooks will be much happier around here. They are all great and their offerings are fantastic but if the code you get to work with is buggy from the start it makes life a lot harder to get out a stable and error free ROM. Not to mention all the time the Cooks put in patching the bad code they get from the officially released versions by HTC. [I'm trying to compliment all the cooks here if it doesn't sound like it your not getting my point ]
Looking to the future...
yep, I hear u. always nice to have a custom rom for ur personal needs. I just like to stick wit the legit version so when my phone bricks ill get a new one under warranty. these things cost too much to buy another one.
As of this morning it's still off line no change in the page yet.
Well it's back online now and no change in the file name so I guess not an update.
Consider this thread dead for now.
