GSM Frequency Change, dual-band to quad or tri-band - Windows Mobile Software Development

Greetings, can anyone please tell me if there is any way to get my T-mobile device to recognize other GSM frequencies? It is currently a dual-band pocket pc device and I would like to make it such that it recognizes the 850 Cyngular frequency in the US. In other words, how can I make my dual-band device a quad or tri-band device?

Hmm. i would say only by soldering. It's a hardware limitation of the device...

Yeah, my device is only dual band. I thought that perhaps all these devices initially had the potential or ability to pick up any signal but that it was a software issue to actually start doing so. I am not too good with the techy lingo, but is there something called "soft phone"? I can't imagine companies manufacturing very similar phones overseas and in the US and the only difference being that one is dual band and the other tri band. It makes sense that these devices are all quad band and the company places limitations on them depending on where they are purchased

no the HF VHF and UHF and so forth need a frontend which cant just be programmed like that it have to do with filters and such as in before the signal ever get close to being digital and programmable

can you shed a little more light on the filters and hardware change that would be required to change a frequency or activate another if the chip has it. ( sometimes it is capable but not activated )

Omnia i900 with no 3g?

I just bought a singapore-configured omnia and i can only get it to connect to edge here despite being in a known 3g network... In the connection manager i only have options for "cellular line" and "cellular line (gprs)" (as well as haynes and bluetooth etc), but no "cellular line (gprs, 3g)" as I do on my other phone...
Any suggestions as to how i might get it to recognize the 3g in my area? (rogers/at&t).

if i'm not mistaken i900 has 3G but only in the 2100 band, maybe you can check with your operator what 3G band they are using...
I believe rogers runs their 3g on 1900 and there is no option for 2100 on the phone, only 850/1900 and 900/1800...

what you are saying is the GSM band, what I meant was the UMTS band which is 2100 for the i780
I have no option for UMTS in the phone ;\ I believe rogers runs on 2100 also but i'd have to check my other phone... is there somewhere where 3g/umts could be disabled on the phone? The specs say that it supports tri-band and umts.
edit: just checked the rogers phone, under settings -> phone i have a seperate tab for "band" wherein i can choose the gms/umts band "gsm(900+1800)+umts(2100)" etc but on the omnia there is nothing of the sort.
is it possible that the korean version of the phone somehow has umts disabled?

try under the MORE tab in phone settings, frequency in BAND SELECTION should be set to automatic.
This is a big mystery to which there is no real answer.
I have a I900 as well, but I do not have 3G/WCDMA in the US via AT&T which uses 850/1900 bands (which I believe is what Rogers and Fido use).
Here are some interesting bits:
- The I907 is a North American version that supports 3G on 850 and 1900.
- No one to my knowledge has seen any different hardware parts related to the Cell in the I907 vs the I900. The radio in both supports 8 of the UMTS bands that have been proposed (only 4 are in common use, and one of those is only in Japan). The cell antenae of the I900 are designed for optimal gain in the 850/1900 bands.
The Radio is idential to that of the Diamond, Touch Pro, G1, Kaiser, Touch, Touch HD and anything else using the 7201A or 7200 chipset. The I900 and I907 do not use this chipset, but it uses the same radio hardware.
No one was able to get the EU Diamond to use the 850/1900 GSM band, and in fact the US Diamond has the same radio Firmware as the EU diamond.
I was confident that if anyone could figure out how to make this work, it would be people at XDA on an HTC device (caveat - there are a lot of europeans here who don't care about 3G in north America, so I may have been wrong there)
Where does it say tri band UMTS on your phone?
I just upped the UK t-mobile rom into the phone and surprise, the profiles for singapore internet are still in the phone... HOW is this possible on a full rom (pda + phone) flash???
anyways, looks like the umts spectrums we use are locked in the firmware for the phone, despite the radio being able to use it ;\

It seems like there are at least four places in which firmware lives:
- "Phone" (usually called Radio)
- "PDA" (the rest of the ROM)
- "CSC" (seems to be for branding. I.e. TMobile has a special .csc file as compared to stock ROMS with similar firmware)
- GSM settings, accessible through dialing obscure number on the Phone. Search Modaco for a list, people seem to find new ones every day. Some of these numbers just effect the ROM settings, but some seems a little more powerful.
- In some of the recent Roms there is a Band Tab in the phone settings, but it only lists "Auto", "850/1900", "900/1800" and "WCDMA". WCDMA is 2100 in the rom I have installed (Signapore PDA with an "Open Market" Phone (XXHI2) )

Enable 850mhz

Hi Guys,
After alot of searching on here I was still unable to find my answer.
Im currently using XBMOD's ROM (thanks man its tops) I dont want to change from it. But the problem I am having is here in Australia im with Telstra and it uses 850mhz for its 3.5 NextG network.
I have noticed that with majority of the roms on here this is enabled or even supported. I know my phone has it because when i load it up with Telstras ROM everything works like Foxtel and and what not.
Is there someone out there that can help me get this up and running.
Then we could start mixing it in with the roms here.

I'm using a Telstra diamond, and im running the official Asia 2.03 rom, and it works fine...the network drop down box doesn't show UMTS 850MHz, but it is picked up as far as i know...(i've travelled to a nextG only town and had signal - even without the patch attached installed)...also all the quad band radios support 850MHz, you can enable it in the drop down list using this patch if you want:

It's not software that allows us with Telstra Diamonds to connect to the other frequencies but hardware.
Our Telstra Diamond's are DIAM130's. They have extra hardware to enable the use of our 3G frequencies.
well i know i have the hardware cause when i am using the telstra stock rom i can do what i want to do.. so its more of a software side where i have to activate that piece of hardware

Just because you can access the Telstra features doesn't necessarily mean you're on the 850Mhz band (trust me, I learned the hard way)... you could be connecting through their 2100 Mhz network (I think it's 2100). Even if you have the option of selecting 850 Mhz in the phone settings it doesn't mean you have the hardware for it.
Want a definitive check? Try restricting the phone to the 850 Mhz setting and seeing if you can still connect. Otherwise, pull the back cover off, pull the battery away from body and read the model number below the bluetooth icon (assuming they all have this)... if it's a DIAM100 then definitely no go. If it's a DIAM130 then you're laughing and I'm not to sure on any other model no's though.
I've flashed a myriad of ROM's from here on the DIAM130 and have never had an issue with connecting to the NextG network... they have all connected straight after reboot. The only thing you have to do for internet access is ensure you set the HTTP proxy to 10.1.1.181:80 although it has worked fine for me without this.

I live in rural NSW, there is only the nextG 850MHz network here, or GSM...where i checked the signal was a nextG only region...no GSM coverage at all...so i think that's proof enough don't you?

Agree, rip the back off and do this check first, I've found no issues in using any rom's with my DIAM130. I've left band settings to Auto lately.
I use to go in and change the registry to show all bands, but got sick of doing it everytime a rom cooker "missed" our bands.
The cab from Dutty does work I think by my memory ?
I did have a DIAM100 proir, and yes it will show "Telstra" etc but you will NOT get NextG 850.

My device is DIAM100 and upgrade to "hTC_Asia_WWE_2.03.707.2_Radio_Signed_D iamond_52.51.25.26_1.09.25.23". It also do not have 850Mhz. Is Radio 1.09.25.23 not Quad band support? But it appear when using original ROM.
Most radios support quad band UMTS.
DiAM100 devices do NOT though and this is a hardware limitation.

The context of 'quad' band in this thread is in relation to the Aussie Telco 'NextG' network which requires 850MHz UMTS connectivity - something you DON'T have on a DIAM100.
You meant only UMTS 850mhz or simply 850mhz (GSM & UMTS)?

We're discussing 'NextG' which is 850MHz UMTS although Telstra do have 3G service via 2100 UMTS as well...

thanks for the large amount off support. I check my phone. I have a DIAM130.
And I installed duttys cab and chose GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
and it still isnt doing what I want it to do.
Those that have nextg here know that you get access to bigpond, and foxtel mobile tv.
But this isnt working. I think there might be something in the registery I might have to change or something for it to know that its a telstra device.

US Touch Pro 2 Unlocked

Anyone know if they will be releasing an unlocked version for the US carriers? I would get the European version myself, as 3g isn't a big deal for me, but what gives me concern is the Wall charger doesn't include a US plug. Im sure this is a small deal considering i could proly just buy a standard HTC charger, but im just curious if they will be having an unlocked that will both include the US charger, and work on US 3g networks.

As far as the charger goes, yes, that is a concern. But I don't doubt that somewhere in your house you've got a miniUSB charger lying around. If not, your local Wal-Mart/Target/Radio-Shack/Best Buy will have a million of them.

I have been on a number of blogs for the TP2 and they are seem to be in agreement that the European TP2 will only work over the EDGE network in US...
Personally, I am currently an iPhone user, but my wife is driving me crazy waiting for this US version!

uk/europe model will only work on edge in US. devicewire have done a detailed review on a europe model and could only get edge. to get 3g will need to wait for official model for that region.

Actually you have it awry. European 3G runs on 2100mhz not 1900. U.S 3G runs on 850/1900mhz.
If you go to HTC's site, the TP2 Euro model will do GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 1900mhz. SO if O.P imports a Euro version, he could use it on EDGE or he could just wait for the AT&T version. T-mobile USA's 3G runs on 1700mhz though.
T-mobile USA's 3G requires both 1700mhz and 2100mhz. Suppose to be hear around July 22nd...

Standard mini usb cables, yes and i also am aware i can also just charge the thing using the included USB cable. What im asking about is the WALL charger. If HTC uses thier standard USB-mini cable that is on a good chunk of their devices, including the HD/ Tilt/Diamond ect.. im sure finding a US charger wont be that hard.
Also, i was asking about an Unlocked US version, i do not intend to get one though the carrier as i dont want a modified version that they lock down. Nor do i care to wait till the fall when AT&T gets off their duffs to finally release it.
In any event, im just keeping my ear open and seeing what the grapevine heard about it.

I was confusing the specifications thinking that HTC would at least be smart enough to include full support for all markets. I was reading the Quad-Band GSM as support for HSPA/3G bands. I was totally bypassing the HSPA/WCDMA dual-band specification.
Chalk it up to a mix of wishful thinking and childish excitement. That does, however, kick the crap out of my week. Only HTC can bring me down this hard.
Well, I guess ATT got approved for theirs. Now the only question remains is, will their be an unlocked US version that supports 3g? or will we have to get the European version?
I'm in Taiwan for Computex and am so tempted to buy a touch pro 2 here. I would wait for the AT&T version but after seeing they changed the keyboard I want the HTC model. Only reason I haven't picked one up yet is because it only gets edge in the US on AT&T.

The hardware physically cannot handle it. The Euro/Asian model only supports 3G on the European and Asian bands which are completely different frequencies from the ones used in the U.S. It's definitely not just a matter of software.
And I think we all need to be clear that no one has any idea what the AT&T keyboard will actually look like. The promotional material we have all seen and discussed ad nauseum is a slap-together of the HTC mockup with AT&T's promotional verbage. Even the promotional bullet points list that the "HTC Fortress" has a 5 row keyboard while the mockup picture shows a 4 row keyboard. That picture, at this point, means pretty much nothing at all.
I see, Ill hold off then. Its kinda hard to justify ~$800 on a phone here anyways that doesn't have a warranty in the states. Thanks for the help!

What is the advantage of getting a carrier specific phone (AT&T or T-Mobile) as opposed to a US Unlocked phone outside of price?
I'm currently with Sprint and want to switch to a GSM provider.

the carrier phones usually come with some sort of branding (software: e.g. sprint tv application / hardware: different battery cover, different keyboard layout and so on)
This can either be an advantage or a disadvantage...

So basically what I was hoping for in terms of a 3G phone with a front facing camera won't happen this round.

TouchPro2 UMTS Bands

I am in Canada and one of our carriers Telus just released the TouchPro 2
telus is a CDMA carrier, however, released the device as a world phone, quad band GSM and UMTS 2100 3G.
I am new to the GSM world and would like to understand better.
Telus and another carrier, bell mobility are building a 3G+ network that they plan to fire up later this year, the CDMA network will stay for a while and HSPA+ will be an overlay network with no GSM support.
Telus and bell plan to use UMTS 850/1900 bands.
When a company like HTC makes a phone, are the UMTS radio's hardware or software?
Is it possible for a OEM working with a carrier to hide UMTS 850/1900 bands or install 850/1900 bands in a new ROM update, say Windows 6.5 ROM?
It does not make sense to me for OEM's to make multiple versions of same phone, I understand each carrier has cosmetic outer requests, I am thinking of the core inside build.
It would be nice to have both networks in case the initial network build out for HSPA+ has issues.

UMTS Radio is hadrware.
GSM/WCDMA(or UMTS, if you will) basebands are all hardware as the last poster noted. However, at the request of a carrier, one of the radios in a dual mode CDMA/GSM device can be disabled(as is the case with the dual mode CDMA/GSM version of the Touch Pro2 headed to Sprint here in the US). It is also [theoretically] possible to re-enable the GSM radio in one of the dual mode versions of the Touch Pro2.
On a side note, I wish the CDMA carriers here in the US would transition to GSM technology. I know Verizon will be conducting LTE trials late this year and early next year so that's a plus. It would be nice to transition to LTE, as well, or at least HSPA+....
EDIT: Actually, many OEMs make multiple versions of the same model device. The Touch Pro2 has numerous variants for each carrier which will sell it.
Well, in this case it's a different build from other Pro2's as it has cdma and therefore a different processor.
As for what it is truly capable of I don't know. Carriers have blocked out hardware functionality through software in the past (i.e. certain famous cases of phones with GPS having to wait a long time before a ROM that would let them take advantage of the GPS).
So maybe it's possible. I don't know if it is in this specific case, someone more familiar with the specific hardware and stuff will probably have to weigh in for a definite conclusion.

I think the Telus TouchPro 2 is the same build as Sprint with Telus customization.
I understand that the hardware radio must be present for UMTS 850/1900 to work.
I am not too concerned about the GSM radio(s), just the UMTS radio(s).
According to the spec, it only has 2100 UMTS band
If Telus and likely Sprint have disabled the radio, is it possible to find out if indead the radio would support UMTS 850/1900 and could a cooked ROM enable those above bands?

according to the msm7600 spec sheet it can have the following umts combinations:
2100
1900+850
2100+800
2100+1700+800
2100+1900+850
Now I personally have no idea how one could check to see what options the installed hardware has and whether they are blocking something.
no idea if a new ROM could unlock those frequencies should they be present or how easy it would be to make a ROM to unlock them (they might need a ROM for a device with those features unlocked on that chipset from which to rip the necessary files/drivers for all I know)
And for the record, I think it might be more appropriate to say that the Sprint version is the Telus version with Sprint custommization (after all, the Telus version has come out first), rather than the other way around
and for the record the msm7200 specs sheet says it is capable of the same combinations but personally I can only remember dual band hspa in HTC's phones (the msm7200a sheet doesn't mention the combinations, just the individual bands)

HTC FUZE (AT&T's Touch Pro) has 850, 1900, and 2100 and I assume AT&T's Touch Pro 2 will, too.
Didn't know that, just the question remians of when AT&T will get theirs out to market.

Enabling HSPA: 850/1900 on the Global Version (GSM/CDMA)

Does any body know if it is possible and if so how to enable the HSPA: 850/1900 band on a Global (GSM/CDMA) Version of the TP2.
It already has the HSPA: 2100 enabled... so maybe someone RF inclined could shed some light on this question.

I dont believe it has the hardware to do it. It is not a software tweak.
That is why so many people waited for the ATT version to come out. There is an Australian version that works on one of the bands but not both.
Sorry to say that I think you are wrong about the Hardware reason...
Apparently the Pro2 has the chip installed, but it's locked down some how. That info has been floating around from an inside source at Telus. they say it actually has 850/1900/2100 UTMS bands but just got "locked" by Telus.

Also The TP2 uses Qualcomm's MSM7600. The specs for that processor allow two major sets of radio interfaces, only one of which supports CDMA 800 and 1900. That major set has two variants that support HSPA: 2100+800 or 2100+1900+850.
So the question is; is there anyone with the proper knowledge that can tell what is onboard the TELUS TP2 and if it has infact the variant that supports the North American frequencies, how do we enable it?

Hmm this is definitely an interesting idea. I'd love to have the front facing camera of the Global Version, but I still need 850/1900 UMTS

While the chipset has the various frequency capabilities, it is the tuning of the antannae that determines which frequencies are recieveable , ie, turned on, in the various versions. The AT&T version has a different tuning of the antannae than the global versions.
While theoretically possible, the anatanne is part of the main board and must be physically removed and replaced. I have not been able to find a universal antannae that could be resoldered to the board, if one was brave enough to give it a try.
there is software changes to the chipset controller required as well.
I think it is pretty impractical and likely impossible to do outside of have a new board installed with the properly tuned antannae to make it work. I have researched this for some time now, in an attempt to be able to use the EU versions here in NA. I travel internationally a lot, to Asia and EU, and need the 2100 band, so that has been my motivation.
There may be someone else out there who has different information, but this is what I have learned in digging through the available data for the past 3-4 years of various HTC devices and their variants.
