Which ROM and Radio stack to use? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I'm new to this board. I appreciate the wonderful tools and information available here.
I've reflashed the ROM in my XDA first to the XDA ROM, which I loved, but I need WM2003 now so I'm trying the Siemens WM2003 with the older Radio Stack.
I am on T-Mobile, What ROMS are other T-Mobile people using successfully, with Pocket PC 2002, with Windows Mobile 2003, What Radio Stack are you using?

Yeah i'm confused as well with so many options to choose, i'm in New Zealand not sure what GSM it used.
This Device is so complicated might go back to treo so simple, but not enough feature

Hi ...
1st, there is no connection between which ROM and which RSU to be combined together. Whatever RSU gives you a good signal use it. However, flashing the RSU is the most dangrous action you can do. You can find many stories here about people ended up by replacing the whole device for wrong or crashed RSU update. So be very careful during this process.
The 6.24.01 for t-mobile or A30 for AT&T are the best for PW10B type device (900/1900 MHz), and 3.25 for Qtek or 4.21 for O2 are the best for PW10A devices (900/1800 Mhz) ... the 4.21 has some issues tho.
You better check with someone in your area and operator on which RSU to use. For the ROM, you can cook your own ROM at http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org.

It's not that complicated at all ... and the features become essentials very soon.
Be careful and good luck ...

Status Update
First of all; The newest T-mobile Radio Stack I could find was 6.24.00, I reflashed that and the phone works fine. I tried reflashing the PDA ROM, and boy did I waste a lot of time trying to do it via ActiveSynch. It appears that once I had WM2003 in the ROM, I couldn't reflash it to anything else. It went thru the motions, but never actuall changed anything. I changed modality and went to sending a boot image to my 128MD SD card from my PC, using the correct NK.NBF file for T-Mobile WM2003 4.00.21 ENG rom, and then used boot loader to reflash the PDA rom, that works every time!
Well, anyway, the job is complete and the PDA works just fine!!!!!
Thanks to you all for your help.

ATT RELEASES FINAL WM2003

http://www.my-siemens.com/MySiemens...D%2FHD%2FSX56POCKETPCPHONE%2Fdanda%2F,00.html
enjoy my friends..
A "real" version of WM2003, I bet O2 wont follow suit.
Yeah it is the final.. its very nice i installed it and its way faster and doesnt crash.. very pleased.. although the .exe file sucks and wouldnt install so i just loaded it onto a sd card and used the bootloader to get it on the pda..
great.... this is what i've been waiting for... for months.... the dream finally come true... hehehehehehehe....
Can I install this on an asian version?
Will it force-upgrade my radio stack?
I presume this is for US market? So it will be on 1900.
Its shown on the website that it can be "Auto band selection when traveling overseas", so does I can use the 900/1800 band when in asia and uk?
the other thing, can I just put out the .nb1 file from this exe installer and then replace with the one inside the "cooked" rom? will it cause error?
yes you can... extract the .exe file using Winzip or Winrar
take the Nk.nbf file, use XDAtool or XDarit tool to burn it on your SD card, upgrade using SD method... then it will only upgrade your ROM not your radio stack
what "extras" does it have, and what AT&T WS programs does it have.
Now hopefully T-Mobile will release theirs soon.
hi,
has anyone tried to run the file once its downloaded???
just downloaded it myself and double clicked on the exe and i get a corrupt message...
anyone having any luck with this???
Thanks alot
Zetex
Working OK
I extracted the all the files from the downloaded file using winzip. I then used xdatools to copy the nk.nbf image to my xda.
It worked .... no problems so far running the WM2003 ROM.
I guess I was taking a few risks and would have been better copying the nk.nbf to a SD card and then use the bootloader method but I didn't have an SD card handy.
Hope this helps.
zetex
dont do that if you upgrade using the exe then you'll prob get the radiostack aswell and if it's an us radiostack you'll loose your gsm 900/1800
hi m8,
what the best way of putting on my xda1 and also upgrading my radio stack to v4.21.
my radio stack is currently v4.20. I have recently used the xdatools to load the beta version A.20.07 ENG version of wm2003.
What will i need to laod this version and also upgrade my radio stack to v4.21. IS v4.21 the best for the UK???
should i extract the nb1 from the exe and use xdatools like last time???
Thnaks alot
Zetex
From what I've seen on this forum, I think v4.21 is the most recent & best radio stack for the UK. Follow the links from http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/xda/romupgrade/0,,170,00.html to obtain it.
As for the new A30.09 ROM, I extracted the nbf and then used xdatools. I think xdatools converts the nbf to a nb1 if you put it on an SD card but I don't really know too much about it.
hi,
i ahve just downloaded the radio stack from O2 v4.21. I have tried to upgrade through active sync 3.71 it upgraded ok, but when i went to restart the xda it gets stuck on the boot screen. the one that says test not for resale... and at the bottom right hand corner its says A.30.07 and then locks up.
normally before i tried to upgrade it said A.30.07 the underneath it said 4.20...
anybody know what i need to do to correct it??
Thnaks alot
Zetex
I can't even get the damn thing to download
How does this compare to the T-Mobile Rom 4.01.00 ? I'm in the UK and O2 don't appear to be releasing a Rom so I'll be going with one of the US ones..
I currently have 4.01.00 on my XDA and it is fairly stable, with only a few minor quibbles.. is the Siemens Rom better in any way ?
Cheers
I had no problem downloading, a little slow but it came across ok. By the way, I am in need of an early radio upgrade for O2 xda, anything before 4.21.
what version of the radio update is included in this version ???
fcan anyone fillme in. thanks
Does anyone know if this rom has WMODEM.exe (wireless modem program)?
something went wrong
I just did the sd install of the attws mobile 2003, and my radio stack is not working. If I go into the bootloader I get the message gsm error. I have tried to install the rsupgrade into the windows folder in the sx56 after I execute the file it will get to 1% and then it will say failed and press ok to restart. I do the restart and it trys to reload the radio stack again and then says failed. The only way to get it our of this loop is to do a hard reset and then wait ten minutes for the sx56 to start again. I hope someone can help me. Thanks.
p.s. I don't have a battery meter either and the sx56 charge light doesn't work either.
Hi all - I've just corrected the link on the MPx200.org page (it originally pointed to an international link, but knowing that it is for the US version, I searched the US pages for an alternative link) so if you were having problems getting it before, you should be able to click on the valid US link now.

To all who live in Japan and hope to use this to access MMS via the softbank network:
MMSLITE (both builds) do not work in this rom. So if you need MMS lite, best to stay with 6.0 for the time being until this problem is solved.
I'm loosing faith in this unlocking methodology in JAPAN...PLS HELP
I'm starting to think there is no solution I have unlocked and uploaded and reloaded and re-unlocked, etc but still the same problem...My phone can not access the cellular network. I did a manual search and my phone does not acknowledge the JP Softbank network. I have put different kinds of ROM's and OS upgrades, etc, but still no success. I'm starting to think that these great unlocked PDA's only work in Europe and North America and not in JAPAN.
I have seen several other threads with others having the same problem so I am going to try to ask this question in several different threads.
I have no errors and everything works fine in the process, just like everybody says it does, but still nothing for acquiring a signal. It just either shows an exclamation point or searching dots. I have compared the various carrier options on my phone to other Softbank phones and everything is the same networks except acknowledging the Softbank network.
I'm praying there is some smart person out there who can figure this out...PLEASE...PRETTY PLEASE...

Sounds like a radio problem. Tried flashing to a different radio? See the Wiki for instructions. After upgrading to a new rom you should still be able to get a cell signal.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=349461
tried it and doesnt work...
I put several different radio upgrades and nothing...still can never acquire a signal...Please Help! What do I need to do in Japan.

You are getting no signal at all? Can't make calls? I have flashed many roms and always have a signal after flashing. It unfortunately sounds like your phone has a serious problem. I would send it off to get repaired.

I'm a compulsive flasher but I have never been unable to access the network straight after a ROM flash. What radio do you have now? Probably the only way you're going to check if it really is a hardware problem is to install the standard SB ROM (Make sure you disable the re-locking program in the EXT_ROM before you do that - just soft reset when it tries to run the self config after setup, THEN delete the file from the EXT_ROM itself to stop Softbank from screwing you if they hard reset it.) You'll need to install that ROM if you want to return it for repairs anyway.
Is your SIM sitting OK? That caused me problems once before.
don't flash back to softbank yet....

Correct me if I am wrong, but if he installs the SB ROM it will lock his phone for good right? I think it upgrades the radio to the locked 1.14.01.10 If he does downgrade to SB 5 by extracting only the rom from the setup file, then I can't see it making a difference. He should either get a signal or not get a signal, right? I guess though, if it is unlocked and he sends it in for repairs it is going to come back locked in any event.
Wow...many thanks for support BUT still ???
See, I can not get any support from Softbank because I do not have a Softbank phone. The only pda they offer is the X01T HTC with a japanese OS. I have one but it was run over by a car... I can still access the data inside via activesync. Is it possible to copy a particular file from inside that phone to this one.
I bought a Tmobile WIZA200 from the states. Even if I carried it to Softbank, they will not take it because it is in English (&@*#). I am starting to think it is a hardware issue and hope I dnt get burned on this ebay transaction, but have read some other threads that Japan is difficult (like always). Security Nazi's is an understatement.
I relatively understand these replies but don't really wanna get stuck with a "fried" phone through trial and error.
Do I need a SoftBank ROM?
If so, will I be able to unlock it through the methods in this site?
Will the ROM from an X01T work?
My old X01T, I had it unlocked and changed to English OS but all the unlocking was code based....I never had to input a code in this WIZA200 so I think the person unlocked it before me and I was just doing redundancy...???
Many thanks for your input.
Sent you a PM.

It's moot since he's not got a Softbank phone anyway, but the ROM itself doesn't lock the radio in, a program in the EXT_ROM writes the 1.14.01.10 radio, and then changes the bootloader (I think) so you can't change the radio. It doesn't lock a previously unlocked phone - I know because I have the black model and foolishly loaded the new ROM that locked the radio in, but my phone is still unlocked and supercid, which I'd done before flashing the SB ROM.

I don't think so, but you have a Softbank SIM from the crushed phone, right? Was that damaged in any way?
btw, does this ROM works with MMSlite? or it uses SB original mail program?
Hmmm...It sounds like there are great minds working on this
I had a reply from another thread with the same question and they are having kind of the same problem...I have seen this is several threads. from Japan users with unauthorized hardware.

Is it possible to manually go in and change the radio to 1.14.01.10 and is that the right ?freq? (I hope Im understanding this right). Also, do you know which files these are exactly within the phone and is it possible to go into my old one, copy the right files, change some wording and paste into my WIZA200? Where did you get the SB ROM, etc...?
hey, links are dead....
can I get a link to the Japanese Forum or to the rom.

Upgraded to the "wrong" WM6 version

I have an unlocked i-mate JASJAM phone (Hermes 100 model) that I decided to use instead of my regular T-Mobile phone (the Dash, another HTC phone).
It worked fine until we decided that it was time to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0 (from 5.0)… did a quick search, found a downloadable Windows Mobile 6.0 image and went ahead and did it.. without any thought. As a result, we downloaded the Australian telecom Telstra’s WM6.0 image on my device.
The Telstra WM6 image lets me:
1. Turn ON the phone without problems.
2. Sync Outlook using Active Sync via a USB connection
3. Access the internet when using a WiFi connection.
BUT does not recognize the T-Mobile SIM card (the phone still shows as being unlocked).
I have tried flashing a "neutral" image using instructions from this site but it either says that the phone is not connected (it is via the USB) or tells me that it is not the right utility.
What can I do to get a new WM6 flashed on my Hermes 100 and how? T-Mobile will not help me as the Hermes is not their phone.
Thank you for your help!

Why dont you try a different ROM. Where are you located at?

Flash with any WWE ROM like Schap's WM6.0 v4.30, but be sure to upgrade your SPL to 2.10 Olipro and better to upgrade your radio version also.
before upgrading the radio make sure you find out which is "best" in your area.... Upgrading the radio is one of the riskiest thing you can do as it is MAJOR trouble if things go wrong generaly resulting in a brick(pda still works but no phone function)... also there has been some problems associated with radios suddenly not working. if your radio seems to be working fine then leave it alone as the wrong radio can result in BAD reception and fast battery drain. Make sure you do a search b4 upgrading this so you go in with eyes wide open. Cheers

I think you may have learnt a lesson here sir, these devices NEED you to think when you are upgrading them or you will end up one of the many people trying to unbrick their phone.
READ READ READ next time
Thank you all for your replies. Yes, I do feel absolutely stupid!
I am in the Seattle area of the US. Is it important?
have you tried putting the device in bootmode/-screen before connecting to your PC (through USB)?
Or maybe even flash from SD?
Yes, I have followed the process outlined in this forum many times but I either get the message that the device is not connected (as soon as it starts to flash, it is kicked out).
From what I have been able to gather, it is the radio that is blocking the SIM card and any flashing (unless it is from the Australian Telco Telstra whose image I managed to download... why they would allow that is another question!).
Thoughts?

The SAFEST way to flash Official AT&T WM6

Hi!
I’ve just received my phone back from AT&T Repair Center. Sent it there because of “No GSM” problem. Guess I was experimenting with ROMs and radios too much. Anyways, now I have my 8525 with virgin WM5 installed on it and I don’t want to mess up the phone again, ‘cos my life without it was really miserable. But I really got used to WM6 (I was using Pandora 9.1 for couple months prior to breakdown). So I would like to upgrade the ROM to WM6, but do it as safe as possible. As far as I now, it is better to flash latest official AT&T WM6 ROM before flashing any modified ROM. I did check Mr.Vanx guide, but I couldn’t find the answer to my question – it guides you how to flash modded ROMs, however I couldn’t find info about how to flash original ROM.
So , could anybody quickly guide me through the process of doing it SAFELY, please?
Hard-SPL – should I do it before I do it anything else (before reflashing original AT&T WM5 with original AT&T WM6). I still do not understand what is this “Hard-SPL” , the only thing I know is that it can potentially prevent bricking bricking the phone, have no idea what exactly it does though
If I remember right, you cannot choose Hard-SPL when using Official AT&T ROM upgrade utility. Should I extract the nbh file and put it into a folder with Custom RUU Wrapper in it and run it from there?
From SD card or via ActiveSync? Which is safer? Is Hard-SPL needed if flashing with SD card?
Should I install the complete AT&T WM6 ROM or install vp3G ROM without a radio, so radio is left untouched (it is 1.40.30.00 now)
So it all comes to the question - What is the safest installation sequence?
1) WM5 -> WM6 from SD card
2) WM5 -> WM6 via ActiveSync
3) WM5 -> Hard-SPL -> Official AT&TWM6 from SD card
4) WM5 -> Hard-SPL -> Extracted nbh from official AT&T WM6 coupled with Custom RUU wrapper via ActiveSync
5) Other
Thank you!
And please, do not send me to search, I did... Just pick the number Thanks again!
i vote for 3
Are you crazy I was like u I instead got a new 8525 from Craigslist, but anyways came with WM5
and THE ABSOLUTE 1st THING I DID WAS HARDSPL : 2.10.Oli and then the ABSOLUTE best ROM for AT&T customers is vp3G's WM6 v3.62 AT&T ROM but I have an older Radio like 1.16.00.00 but I am scared to FLASH my radio to 1.54 so till I grow the balls to flash my RADIO I'm gonna STICK WITH 1.16 and vp3G's WM6 v3.62 AT&T ROM like he says "AT&T WM6 sweetness without all of the suckiness"
if you are simply wanting to use stock at&t wm6 just us activesync and open up your update package. you can then use hard spl if you wish to falsh a custom rom

I agree wholeheartedly with this advice. HardSPL is a great utility, but if you have your mind set on the stock AT&T ROM (I've been using it for months, and it's not that bad), then simply use the one that's legit, and don't mess with anything else. This way, if something DOES go wrong, it should still be fully covered under warranty.

You're actually fine with flashing hardspl (for xda rom cooked upgrades) and flashing back to stock ATT rom if you're sending your phone back for a replacement. I've done it twice within my 1yr warranty coverage.
I never had any issues with ATT receiving my broken phone and telling me they would not honor the warranty. I received my replacement phone and I'm fine.

Thanks for replies guys!
So HardSPL is not necessary if I want to flash AT&T ROM on AT&T phone? It can provide some additional safety only when flashing custom ROM? Is vp3G's WM6 v3.62 AT&T ROM considered to be "Official" or "Custom" from the HardSPL point of view ("Derived from AT&T Final WM6 ROM (3.62.502.3)")? I have to admit that I am a little afraid to mess with the radio. As of now, I am leaning towards flashing vp3G ROM (OS only) from SD card without HardSPL.
P.S. My phone is not under warranty anymore. So when I came to AT&T store asking if my phone can be fixed (No GSM), they offered me to buy a new phone
All you have to do is plug into activesync and flash it.
It doesn't matter because the WM6 AT&T official rom doesn't need to be hardspl or anything

If you decide to go with vp3g, you should definitely flash HardSPL first. That is NOT an official ROM. Don't get careless, now. Warranty or not, you don't want a brick.

Telstra branded diamond changing to different rom

I have a Touch Diamond branded by telstra after reading looking through the forum for a while I can't find an answer to a perplexing question ....
Has anyone tried to change the rom on a telstra branded TD to the vodafone rom?
Or has anyone changed to a custom rom with a telstra branded and to what success?
Thanks everyone in advance for help.
While I haven't tried the Vodaphone Rom I have tried a number of other ROM's Dutty's, Swifts, Panosha's Simple, and now Hikari ( i don't like the Tf3d). All have worked well on the Telstra Network. I can't see why it won't work on the Vodaphone network. My nephew's work fine on the Optus network.
To be really honest the only extra functionality you will gain from the Vodafone ROM is the Vodafone specific software and the theme.
If it's just the theme you are after I suggest browsing this forum for one.
Alternatively if you're after the Vodafone ROM for Vodafone SIM... I'd skip that and jump straight onto one of the custom ROMs. The phone performance is a HEAP better than any of the telecommunication company's stock ROMs.
Food for thought.
Im on NextG with Telstra and i have tried nearly every rom here except vodafone.. but the only one flaw with using a unbranded telstra rom is being able to access bigpond.. like with foxtel and all that.. just doesnt pick it up as being a 3.5G phone.
i dunno why.. but i have just put it back to telstra rom and modded it completely myself. if i knew how to take like an image of it i would and post it up here but i wouldnt know one thing about cooking roms lol
I have a Telstra branded Diamond and am using it with an Optus SIM.
When I first got the phone I couldn't get it to accept the Optus settings for Internet access.
So... I upgraded it to one of the cooked ROMS. (Dia Duit and Duttys were tried)
Since then I haven't gone back to the standard ROM and enjoy the better performance.

If you're talking about the Bigpong 'free to browse' page being different the all you need is to change the 'custom user agent' setting in Opera... see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2688822&postcount=260
But anyway... to answer the OP, I've flashed a stack of ROMs from here and am currently happy with CT's latest (HD version). Just remember to keep the original specs (Radio & ROM version no.s) in case you need to revert for warranty.
thanks for all the help
thanks for all your comments
I bought the touch diamond second hand, and didn't realise till after I'd parted with the money it was branded (HUGE newbie mistake) but I haven't bought a new phone for 6 years since I got the Nokia 6620.
I use a vodafone sim, and have it working pretty well, just the last lot of telstra locked stuff annoys me. Thanks to this fantastic forum I have been able to change and unlock most of it. Biggest thing is some things just won't work on it, because the current Telstra rom is 1.38.841.5 (vodafone rom is 1.96.XXX.X) and experience a fair share of the modding apps & cabs have problems or simply don't work.
I was thinking of the vodafone one simply because I'm with them. Also when I was first trying to unlock it talked to HTC and they said I couldn't use the vodafone rom on my telstra branded because the hardware in the telstra one is different to the vodafone one.
Thanks for the help, can anyone suggest the best custom rom, & what else do i need to change roms? I've got a bit of a IT background, just not with phones.
Really love this little phone, and I see potential for tf3d, but long way of modding to get it as I want it.
Thanks again everyone.
I have a similar question, thought I'd save wasting a new thread and post it here.
I've had a Telstra branded Diamond for a few months now, using it with a 3 Mobile SIM, and have had no worries until a couple of days ago, when I started roaming, and haven't been able to reconnect to the three mobile network since..
Any ideas??
The only question regarding Telstra branded Diamonds is returning to original SPL 1.38 for warranty reasons..
just one more thought
another question or two...
If I upgrade to another custom rom will I still have to unlock it after the hard reset?
I've been looking and think I've found the rom I want, but can't find a definitive link for hard spl. I've read the thread that everywhere directs me to and the links that I think are for the unsigned hardspl has the headind stock spls, or am I just misreading this.
Also does anyone know if CT 6.4 is signed or unsigned?
Guys - I understand the confusion surrounding upgrading and flashing ROMs as it was only recently I was in the same position.
So in an attempt to make it a little easier for those reading here I will pass on what has worked well for me...
1. Flash HardSPL as downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=93362&d=1213719705 (it's unsigned but don't worry about that... it saves headaches if you want my opinion)
2. Download the ROM of your choice (as stated earlier - my preference is currently CT's v6.4HD... fast, stable and HD, what more do you want?)
3. Once you have the ROM, extract the .nbh file and rename it to DIAMIMG.nbh and copy this to the root of your internal storage on your Diamond
4. If you're ready to flash (meaning you've backed up whatever you wanna save) then hold the vol down and back button and press the reset button together until you see the tri-colour screen... you're then in the bootloader
5. The phone will search for the .nbh file you placed in memory and ask you to press the power button to confirm you want to flash... obviously you want to do this so sit back while it flashes
6. Once done, reset the phone and perform a hard reset (this is recommended by most ppl although I haven't always done it and never had any issues)
Now enjoy setting your phone up with a custom ROM...
If you want more detail then I strongly suggest you search around and read... it takes time and effort but it's definitely worth it if you want to flash with confidence...
Cheers
not as easy
Sorry if anyone read this orginal post just getting jitters when something went wrong with hardspl flash.
But a soft reset later and its still works. But it raises the question if something bad happens when flashing the hardspl and bootloader doesn't work what can be done apart from throwing phone away?
I assume as long as the bootloader works you can manually redo incomplete rom install?
Something going wrong with hard spl install is my biggest worry, it was a nats ear from happening a little earlier so I'm asking these questions.
Oh & last thing with CT's 6.4 rom what is the real difference between original TF3d and HD? How is the increased screen resolution handled? Do you have to scroll down for the area I cant see, or is it cut off so you can not access it, or is it squished to fit the smaller resolution?

As long as you can access the bootloader you should be able to sort out the phone... personally I've never had an issue with flashing (and on average I've flashed my two Diamonds (a 130 and 100) an easy 30-40 times).
My preference with flashing is to do it from the internal storage (seems the most logical in terms of reliability - and is also by far the fastest) but I'm not sure if HardSPL can be done that way - if it is possible I'd be strongly recommending it - USB connections are just too dicey for something that serious.

I have the OliNex 1.4 hard spl and I can flash CT's ROM without any problem.
done
Well it done.
A little easier than I was expecting but just as concerning, but over now.
Finally went with CT's 6.4 Original, I can always change to the HD or just add one of the HD add ons.
Everything is running smooth and well. Finally all the testra crap is gone.
Thanks to everyone for their help and kind advice.
This is a GREAT forum, its been a fantastic help and resource.
Till next time
How do you flash the new 2.03 ROM? I have tried with the executable from HTC and it gives me an invalid ID error.
