ConnMgr GPRS / ActiveSync - Windows Mobile Software Development

Hi,
I've written an app which uses a GPRS connection to read from the internet. Now when the XDA is put into the cradle then the current active connection switches from GPRS to the internet connection that is active on my PC via ActiveSync. Now... don't know how many of you guys use All-locations traffic counter but that program goes insane when this happens. Upload and download go to 4096 MB (or something like that). it scared the hell out of me when i first noticed it the next day but it's caused when the XDA switches connection?
Any idea how to drop the GRPS connection when the ActiveSync takes over?
Other problem is that Pocket Internet Explorer doesn't start up a GPRS connection when an url is passed to it as parameter (using shellexecuteex function). so i have no idea how to detect when that application closes so i can shut down the gprs connection.
Any ideas are welcome.

Automatic GPRS connections...

Whenever I soft reset my PDA2K, after latching on to the GSM network, it connects to GPRS automatically. I don't know why. But even after that, it connects to GPRS at times when it feels like it. I do not know what data it transfers, or why it connects. I do not run any program which needs to access the internet. Is there a freeware program which can monitor my GPRS usage so that I can find out how much data it transfers, and what process causes it to turn on? Also, is there any option in the PDA2K which gives me an option to confirm whether a GPRS connection can takeplace or not. I like to be in control of my devices, not vice versa. I would like the PDA2K to ask nicely if I want to connect to GPRSor not.

On your PDA go to activesync and uncheck "use mobile schedule" ... that may be the culprate, automatically trying to find your PC via your GPRS connection.
Thanks Wiz! Seems to be working... Let's see if it carries on. And how about a freeware for measuring GPRS traffic?

Is it possible to use GPRS whilst cradled?

...I have just upgraded to T-Mobile 1.42 and decided to subscribe to T-Mobile UK's Instant Email using Blackberry Connect. This of course uses GPRS and works perfectly wherever I go.
At work, however, I often leave my phone cradled. When I 'sync-up' to the PC, I lose my GPRS connection, and forcing a connect drops the ActiveSync connection. As such, Instant E-Mail stops working.
Some may argue that if I am synced up, I instantly get all my e-mails through the cable anyways, but in fact I also get personal e-mails via Instant Email.
1) Is the disconnecting normal behaviour?
2) Is there any way of keeping a GPRS connection whilst ActiveSyncing?
3) If not, is there any other way of using BB Connect in this state?
Regards,
Darren
disconnecting is normal behaviour - I have not found a way to avoid it
Hi!!!
It´s normal, you only have one chance, sync or GPRS.........if you want to conect by GPRS while your PDA is in the cradle you sholud disable USB conection on active sync
PD:excuse me for me english

Thanks for all the advise but my problem still not resolved yet.... not too sure whether is my home WIFI+router setting or my P800W setting problem.... this really getting to my nerve !!!
1. I can connect to my home WIFI and able to surf internet with my laptop.
2. I can connect to my home WIFI and able to surf internet with my old pda MITAC 558.
3. When i use my p800w... can connect to my home WIFI but cannot surf the internet. The weird part... managed to surf the internet few times... and then cannot surf again/..
Please help !!
I'm facing same problem also..
I can connect to Wifi, but when try to open website, using IE
is stuck on LOCATING....
WiFi Issues
I have exactly the same issues and have tried installing both Opera and Netfront to no avail. I can connect to Wifi perfectly can then sync Avantgo, download quick GPS updates and surf a couple of pages, then the DNS seems to fail, have tried with DHCP and fixed IP's. Think the o2 Orbit has some sort of DNS cache fault...As a side issue when the Orbit does connect it runs the Internet very slowly...Both a XDA IIi and XDAs run perfectly on the same wireless!!
Get the devices early and wait for the fixes!!
the same thing on Artemis - device gets IP from WiFi Access point by DHCP, but without DNS. I set DNS manually and Internet is working thought WiFi now.
I had the same problem then installed Wi-Fi Companion, issue resolved. You can download a trial for three days from Pocketgear or Handango.
I changed the wireless mode of the router to only wifi g
has anyone any idea how to get round this yet?
Tried to connect today and all that happens is ie sits there saying 'locating'
I tried Wifi companion..it shows me connected and everything but still can't surf the net.
how can I set DNS manually? might be worth a try
thanks for any help
quick update...Ive just been doig a tracert and ping of my service provider and although the trace and ping come out ok...i.e. still just sits there saying locating...
anyone any ideas?? getting desperate here
Apologies..another quick update....
it's not that I can't connect to the net..it's that there is a default page on IE that tries to connect to pda.o2.co.uk or something..and this page is either not there or something...so, changed the default page and I'm good to go...
apologies again
Mine did the same ... Heres the fix ... It has trouble locating the home page . Type in manually to the address line the url for say GOOGLE and wait for it to connect . Then go to tools options and save current page ( Google) as home page and hey presto ! Sorted
Hi
I also have a similar problem
I have a 802.11b broadband router (linksys) which works fine with my two wifi PC's and my Wifi XDA Exec to access the Internet and collect e-mail
I just got an XDA Orbit and although it "sees" and connects to the Broadband router it will NOT allow access to the internet or e-mail (apart from one very short half page of ntlworld.com home page on one occasion)
WORST than that , when I use the XDA Orbit with Wifi and Internet Explorer - it HANGS the wi-fi router after about 30 secs and I have to reset it before I can access the Internet from any other PC's !!
What am I doing WRONG ???
Any suggestions welcomed
I tried the above 'fixes' and it DID get me a BIT further
i.e. I was able to get a connection to google.co.uk for about 30 seconds and do one enquiry - but then it STILL hung the router and the XDA Orbit was stuck saying 'locating'
Take a look here this worked for me.
Sorry did not work for me - after 30-40 seconds of surfing IE hangs on 'locating' and the router hangs and has to be re-set
ANYTHING TO DO WITH 802.11b compatibility ????????
Where can I get Opera browser to try that ?
How many posters have fixed this problem ?
OK
I downloaded the latest trial version of OPERA and tested that
EXACTLY the same result
If I switch on WiFi and connect to the Internet via Opera, I can access the internet for about 30 seconds, then the browser cannot access any more
If I switch of WiFi on the Orbit quickly, then the Router is OK - if I don't, then the Router Hangs and all my computers lose internet access
Has anyone else seen this ??
Has anyone cured this ??
Is is an 802.11b problem ??

BUG? in ActiveSync configuration on WM6?

When configuring Activesync, you would choose which connection for it to use to sync with exchange server and in the WM5 I would pick My ISP but on the WM6 "Internet" is the only options in the drop down menu.
Shouldn't it be listing all avaiable connections you have added in the Connection settings?
Maybe a bug? or is there a setting where I select connection type for "Internet" on WM6?
Thanks
Bill
In the connections dialogue you select what My ISP (or whatever you use, i.e mine is 'O2') connects to, which is usually the internet.
When you set activesync to connect via the internet it will use ANY connection which does just that. So if you are connected via the USB to your pc it will connect to the internet through that. If you are disconnected from your PC it will use your GPRS instead.
I dont think it is a 'bug' really. Does your activesync work as desired?

Yeah Activesync seem to be working fine but in WM5 it wouldn't work with connections that uses proxy and it would allow me to select a connection in the drop down menu that doesn't have proxy setting ie "My ISP"
Perhaps the new Activesync now works with proxy.
As far I can tell it's working fine.
Mine does not - I have to manually use activesync to get mail from the Exchange Server. Push does not seem to work. There is another thread on this here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297781
It is really annoying me at the moment as I canot find a workaround.
It seems that activesync can find the GPRS when I do a manual Sync, but has a warning that i do not have a cellular internet connection. Odd. I originally used the Orange .cab files to set up the connections, I then deleted them and recreated the connection manually which made no difference.
Any ideas would be welcome!
I have a similar problem. I'm not sure if it's the same or not. Help would be appreciated...
When my Hermes is roaming everything in hunky-dory, GPRS, HSDPA, Push-Email... all is running smooth. BUT...
When I Activesync (I have "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" unchecked - as advised in this thread), the hermes initially drops any wireless connections, then, instead of using the PC's broadband (as per WM5 & Activesync 4.2) to sync with Exchange it tries to dial up to GPRS again. Sync ultimately fails with error code 85020006. This webpage says the problem is "The Connection Manager could not find a path to the destination.
- OR -
Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try again"
This is annoying as I have SPB Insight installed which I want to use the PC's connection to update all the channels, as well as sync with Exchange.
EDIT: I tried this before among other things and it didn't work but now it seems to be working OK. The only thing I can think that has fixed it is changing "This computer is connected to:" The Internet
well i also have WM 6 installed on my device and when i configured AS to sync with mail2web exchange server it stopped accessing the Internet when connected to the PC via USB/ AS.... whenever i try to access the Internet when the device is cradled the device opens the GPRS connection and connects to the net.... how do i get AS to connect to the net when cradled and not GPRS... and the exchange sync gives an error MSG 85020006...
someone please help me.... its really very frustrating not being able to connect to the net when connected via USB/ AS...
thank u
