really at&t, who in the hell uses that character? i spent 2 mins looking for the '-' character, only to find it located on the P key...that space of jeyboard real estate has been squandered. and whule we're on it, why wouldnt they have the exclamation mark as the first available punctuation character and follow as closely to a qwerty keyboard?
I agree 100%. On a standard computer keyboard (with many more keys), I do not have a "cents" sign. Why does my mobile device need to have one?
How frequently do most people need to use the "cents" sign, other than for the phrase "putting in my 2 cents". Any more, I just see it as "putting in my .02".

Does anybody know how to edit the word substitution list for SMS texting on the TMO-US branded TP2? I had a cooked Touch Flo Rom on my Wing that handled it beautifully, but the stock substitution on the TP2 only seems to automatically capitalize the first word and is missing a few things that I really got used to:
* "i" by itself got capitalized (even in the middle of a sentence)
* "dont" got its apostrophe along with "didnt", "wouldnt", etc.
* I can't swear to it, but I even think it managed some other contractions like "You've" and "You'll"
TIA
its because word completion doesn't work. search for word completion & you'll find countless threads on how to enable it again. Warning though, it will disable the functionality of FN+SYM to get the symbol menu
All the threads I found are talking about a T9 word completion, which I don't really care to use. I'm looking for an auto-correct functiont that automatically replaces "misspelled" words like "dont" with the correct spelling ("don't") after you hit the space bar. I don't like word completion, per se. I just use the auto-correct as a short cut so I don't have to "Alt-K" to get an apostrophe. Has anybody worked on this, or have I missed the thread that discusses it by not searching the right terms?
[Edit]
This is for use with the hardware keyboard, BTW
[\Edit]
If you set up the word completion like it says & then use Advanced Config to set the number of suggestions to 0 then all that will work is the auto correction
@xnifex,
Thanks, I had decided to take the plunge and do the reg hack like it said, and discovered exactly what you said I'd find. Thanks for being patient with my stubbornosity. Still no fix for the [Alt + ,] for the symbols, then? Granted, it's pretty well worth the trade-off for me, since I rarely go into the symbols menu, but I hate knowing that something's "broken", even if I don't use it much.
Just trying out the new keyboard and swype feature. Does it support multi finger swype? sort of like keymonk.
It seems to support it to some degree, but it's sketchy at best. Just curious what everyone else is experiencing.

not sure about the two finger swype but regular swiping is working much better for me than the latest official swype beta...

Interesting. I haven't used it long enough to compare it to swype. I stopped using swype though because I eventually got frustrated with it. Good to hear you find it better!
I'll keep playing with it.

Is there any way to turn this feature on, on any other keyboard than the US one? Im from Finland and id be very happy to be able to try this feature.
Not to sure to be honest. I guess Google isn't supporting other languages with their swype feature yet?

I'm using the swipe feature now, I love it. I could never get in to Swype, but I got into the feature with the 4.2 keyboard straight away

Is almost perfect, to not say perfect, because sure Google improves it more.
This is being written with the "swype" feature in my Galaxy Nexus. Too fast, and can be used with another languages. The system detects the route and compares it with the dictionary. Almost always it detect the right word. Sometimes (very few!) it detects another word, so click in the corrector and add the correct. If you enter some word with orthographic errors, it detects it and is introduced and corrected perfectly, like if you are using the normal keyboard. Is good also with punctuation and spaces.
Using it in vertical position and perfect, always I wrote in vertical in old keyboard I have lots of errors because my big fingers. Since I have installed Android 4.2, I don't needed to use the landscape mode, so I'm happy to see how I can write now at the speed of thunder and chat without getting angry
Thanks Google!

If the new keyboard keeps people from getting angry when they chat - it should be mandatory for XDA posters.
Frankly I hate it. It makes no sense in my mind to drag my finger over letter that I don't need for a word, yet through which I have to go in order to get to the next letter I need... I'd much rather type normally
I've got last update for my Galaxy Nexus and now I'm on 4.2, i cant find anywhere Swype keyboard ..its on English (U.S.A) keyboard
Why?
It's just called android keyboard, that now allows swiping. Swype is a third party keyboard you really don't need anymore.

I'm way faster on Swype. I hate trying to hit each key perfectly and and/or moving my hand to enter the suggested. But to each his own.
I have to try this new swipe since people seem to like it.

Did they add in any variety of custom dictionary sync? That's one thing I really like about the version of Swype I have now. I no longer need to re-teach the keyboard all the technical jargon every time I get a new device.
i got some issue with the newz android keyboard, sometimes the word are show twice
The personal dictionary allows you to add words directly (Skype doesn't), but I don't think it works. I added a few email addresses and typing the first 2-3 letters don't bring up the address. Swype had problems with words beginning with a number, so does android. I find android just as accurate. I like having a "." on the numeric keyboard that's not on Swype.

I like it...
never used Swype before because it seemed a bit counter-intuitive, but really like it on the nexus 7 (possibly because typing is a pain normally)
I can see why some people will hate it, mind - some people hate predictive text for similar reasons.
I spent some time with swipe. It's pretty accurate but just feels clunky in places. What I really missed though was the shortcuts that Swype has like swiping from the Swype key to the 5 key to bring up a number pad and swiping from the Swype key to the shift key to change case. And I don't like having to change keyboards to enter numbers. I like the convention of a long hold to get numbers and common punctuation like in Swype.

My version of Swype has a '.' on the numberpad. Are you actually referring to the number pad (accessed by swyping from the Swype key to the #5 or long pressing on the "123" key) or the symbol/number keyboard accessed by quick pressing on the "123" key?
Swype also lets you add to the dictionary--it just does it whenever you key in a new word, as opposed to having you specifically go through the hassle of adding words to the dictionary. That's why I was impressed with the versions of Swype that sync online--so I don't need to re-teach it words I've already taught it on other devices.

Ahhh forgot about the actual numpad. I always found it easier to press the 123 key, and don't think there's a "." there.
The android keypad lets you add words as you're typing too, I just find the "+" in the dictionary more convenient (at least on initial set-up). I also like the nicknames you can add to the personal dictionary, for "words" that Swype doesn't recognize (or suggest)... Like I have "[email protected]" as an email, if it's in Swype dictionary it won't come up as a suggestion, but in android, set a nickname like "mrk" or anything you want, and the suggestion will pop up.
I have nothing against Swype, used it for a year, I just find "little" things about android I like better. I don't type a lot, so may not know all the secrets to Swype (or Android). I do like the new Swype theme options!

The handwriting ability on the Note 2 is all very well when you have decent handwriting ... but my scrawl leads to too many errors, delays etc.
I can write fast using characters - abcdefg....xyx and numbers and symbols but there are too many errors and delays with this method also.
For example try wrinting, letter by letter, the alphabet and you will get a mixture of capitals and full stops . Even worse - try and write a colon or a semi colon .
These errors make the art of writing tedious and time consuming when it could be GREAT with a bit of thought in the way the letter input works.
The hardware is perfectly capable of fast almost flawless input but the software lets it down and holds back what could be an easy and pleasant experience.
In the alphabet that you just inputted try and delete a few random letters ... how hard was it to navigate to the letter you wanted to delete ? Really painfully frustrating and time wasting I bet.
Can anyone please improve the way the PEN input works ??? If you can get it to fill in formula in a spreadsheet without having to click on extra buttons then you have a winner for the benefit of everybody.
MAKE THE NOTE live up to it's NAME !!!
Thank You

Well, for fun I'd thought I'd compare whether I write faster with the pen or using a keyboard. So I compared using the
Note pen, typing on keyboard, and using swipe. First, a few caveats. I'm pretty slow at typing and I don't use swipe
much. I also made lots or errors (too much pressure on me I guess...) with each approach but didn't
penalize time. I'm sure I'd improve with practice but thought I'd just present my results and others can describe their own experience.
Feel free to suggest how to improve comparison as what I tried is full of flaws to be a real fair measure of performance..
For the comparison, I decided to see how many words from the Gettysburg Address I could type in one minute. For this test I used the
new beta swipe keyboard that has popped up lately in these threads. My results were for one minute each:
Pen 30 words
typing 25
swipe 20
So from this limited study I'm writing a little faster using the pen. I was not completely surprised with this result as I had an "inkling" about
this in the past... A victory for the pen! But wait... I also noticed there is a voice dictation option on the keyboard.
Well, it only took me 20 seconds to dictate 30 words with clearly far fewer errors (for me). So in this case the pens glory was fleeting!
I find that I make FAR more mistakes with the pen input. I'm just not a good enough writer to use it I guess. Sometimes it takes me too long to write a word, and it posts up unfinished words. Sometimes it just doesn't like my writing.
I find that I use voice dictation quite a bit. I don't care how people think I look. It's a very good experience. Keyboard is pretty middle of the road.
Personally I'm faster with the keyboard and I make fewer errors on keyboard. I like having instant access to numbers and punctuation as well. I just like the basic keyboard, no autocorrect, no auto capitalization, no prediction, just keys with letters and numbers on them. My input method of choice is Hacker's Keyboard - it's basic and functional. It has a 5 row QWERTY layout with number row, punctuation, and arrow keys which make going back to correct misspellings easy and fast. I haven't messed with handwriting recognition on the Note 3 but previous attempts at using handwriting recognition software were less than impressive - my handwriting is pretty sloppy and I don't get much practice outside of signing my name these days. I think I type faster than I can speak, let alone write, at least on a real keyboard. Nowhere near as fast on a touch keyboard but still am pretty fast with two thumb typing.

Hacker's keyboard is still my mainstay as well although I think it's layout could be improved without sacrificing the keys (I often need Ctrl tab and esc).
For some reason the left hand side of the keyboard is not quite right. The left most key on the number row with the characters ` and ~ is too small.
Is that the case with your keyboard? Maybe there is a setting I can change? Hackers keyboard looked perfect on my Note 1 as it is a little wider than the Note 3.
One thing that might hold back my typing is that my flip cover can make my Note 3 a little awkward to hold and type.
Anyways, for writing long notes, email or even some texts, my experience with the pen has been quite good. When I pull out the pen and bring it near the screen,
a little square appears that when I tap creates a memo pad. The pen works very well with this memo pad. Indeed making corrections is also very easy as you just
draw a line through what you want to remove. It also does a pretty good job of recognizing both my printing and cursive.
Anyways, for fun, you might try a quantitative comparison. Who knows, you might find a surprising result!
The pen is good for 2 things writing if your in a turbulent situation like traveling and for taking notes on a call that's it.

Cleaning the wax out of thy ears?
But seriously, I have horrible hand writting and hardly have any errors when I am using the pen. Try using swype with the pen, now thats something totally different.
Anyways put me down as a pen lover.
I like to write with the pen and find that it works quite well for me. I usually use it to swype because it's easier than activating the handwriting panel. I also find that swype interferes with my entry with standard typing. Sometimes if I hover too low over the keyboard it thinks I'm swyping and enters an interesting combination of typos. The ear wax thing is also pretty useful.
If I say "Hey Google, message Tom", it gets the contact and prompts for a message. I say something very simple like "games" then "question mark", I see it enter "Games" then add "?" and then change the "G" to lower case. Why? Then it has a very awkward interface to edit. I select to make a change and see the correction at the bottom but at the top it still shows “games?” with a lower case “g” and a check mark under it to send. ???
Then when dictating something more complex, a few sentences long, it throws random periods in the middle of sentences. They made a big deal about the speech to text being better on the 6 but it seems worse for me than the Pixel 4. Are you to be stating all the punctuation as you talk? My spelling and punctuation is really bad. I'll say something like "Would you like to go get some food latter?" and it puts "would you like to. get some food latter?" I guess you could say it should have a comma ("Would you like to, go get some food latter?") but why a period? Maybe I slur when I talk.
Speech to text is worst on the 6 in my opinion compared to previous pixels. It's not you... The voice dictation is horrible and I'd rather type than correct all the mistakes.
Like I tried to say fork and couldn't remember how to spell it and phone kept thinking I was saying fcuk but was spelling it right i had to say say knife and fork to get it right in end lol
Yet not that great for me, I'm wondering if its more fine tuned for certain accents because these American reviewers seem to swear by the speech text on it
