hey.
i followed the guide for rooting my galaxy nexus.
driver installation was alright, and then i switched to fastboot mode (green android) and then the device manager didn't recognize my gn (unknown device).
tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, tried "updating" it with various rar files i found on this forum and ofcourse i tries pdanet.
none of them worked. it was always unknown device.
then i had no choice and i removed the battery to boot it normal.
suggestions? thnaks
After installation, plug in your phone, look at your system tray for the USB icon, click it. It should show a status of installing more drivers. This can take awhile, and for a lot of people it seems to fail the last step, Android 1.0 drivers. Open control panel, system, device manager. Look for a yellow error icon. Click that, choose to install drivers manually and locally. Then select 'choose from list', find Samsung.
That should get you back on track

Were you able to unlock the bootloader? If you didn't do this, don't go installing any driver... be very careful. If you install the wrong driver in device manager, you'll screw it up. I installed the wrong driver on my main computer and I couldn't get the device manager to even recognize the phone :| I couldn't locate the right driver either because once I installed the driver, it renamed it. It was a huge pain and the only way I got this to work was by using a different PC with the correct drivers.
I have found this to be the best instructions for unlocking the bootloader. Most importantly, it includes directions on how to gain access to adb on your phone properly. Take your time and follow the instructions exactly...

I had the same issue, install pdanet and your phone will be recognized when in fastboot

silly question, but after booting to fastboot, you are using the fastboot.exe, and not adb? if you type "fastboot devices" does anything show up?
no, nothing shows up.
and thats clearly because the driver is not installed correctly.. i see a yellow sign in device manager.
what am i doing wrong? only thing i was different from the guide is that instead of typing adb reboot bootloader, i got into fastboot by pressing the volume buttons.

click open that yellow unrecognized device...manually choose drivers (don't do auto), and select from the list, you'll see samsung, choose the driver
that should install android 1.0...alot of people have gotten this error.
edit: another thing to keep in mind is, after installing the drivers, and fixing the device in device manager, it can still take a little bit to initialize. in your system tray there should be a usb icon, open that to see when the drivers are done
I am in the same boat. I tried for hours on 2 different Windows 7 laptops (both 64bit). I am trying to get Yakju from one of the derivitives (without unlocking the device).
Steps taken:
- Dloaded Samsung USB driver 1.4.6 & Installed: Did not recongnize in explorer or Odin (even Odin did not show a thing)
- Dladed PDA Net A302x64: Did not recognize in explorer or Odin.
Both times the GN is in Device/Printers and listed as having Android 1.0 driver. I try to manually update, but cannot seem to find driver in list (as it just has Android 1.0 driver listed). Any suggestions?
i didnt even see the "Android 1.0".. just "unknown device" all along..
i also tried on a different computer.. same issue.
about manually installing the driver.. i tried pointing him to a manual driver package i got from this forum.. it said its the same driver..

Well, i've saw someone else on here who was having driver issues, who also had installed both samsung & pda drivers...
uninstall both.
fresh install ONLY the naked drivers directly off samsungs website (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/verizon-wireless/SCH-I515MSAVZW -- if you're verizon, if not, you can search there). Do the install. Plug the phone in, it will start to install its usual crap. this is the long part. then, it will fail like you saw before. in device manager, you'll see the unrecognized device. Open, it will ask you to find drivers, choose "Browse", "Let Me Pick From a List", "Samsung", and then pick the driver with the date 11/25/2011
check to see if there are any other unrecognized devices in device manager, just to be sure you got em all. at this point, plugging in your phone should show the USB connected icon in the system tray. do you see this? If you click it does it say "Eject MTP"?

My R800i Is rooted and has a version of recovery but not sure which version, i am wanting to update my phone with a better kernel and rom since the current one i have installed is giving me issues ( not being able to receive incoming calls for example )
Another problem is i reformatted the phone since i was having issues with receiving calls but now when i connect my phone to ANY computer via the USB cable the computer trys to install MTP or MSC driver ( depends on which connection type i select ) the Installer fails and i cant even take any files off my phone.
Provided details below. i want to somehow get into the current bootloader and install the ROM thats on my SD card! i do have flashtool installed and Android tool SDK installed but still no success in phone wanting to talk to my laptop.
I am running windows 7 64 bit. i am starting to think the phone is belond repair since i cant get any software to work between the phone and computer.
does anyone know what buttons i need to push on the Xperia Play to enter into the boot loader, i have tried pressing the back button and search button on phone boot but nothing happens apart from the phone starts up normally.
would a factory reset delete the boot loader and other config-ed software off the phone is this why i cant enter the boot loader or am i not pressing the right buttons on boot.

If you want to change the kernel you must unlock your bootloader. If your Xperia Play is a SIM free one, you can do it for free in this link: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com
For SIM locked devices I think you must find another ways to do it. There are some online sites that unlock bootloader to SIM locked devices for a fee.
Once you have unlocked your bootloader, turn off the phone, hold on the search button, plug the USB cable in the computer, release the search button (power button LED will be blue) and install this driver: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Google-USB-Driver-Revision4-Download-139077.html
Now you are ready to flash any kernel you want with Flashtool or any other app.

I have tried what you said but having problems with connecting my phone to my Windows 7 Laptop!
Check your device manager. The fastest way to open it is running this command: devmgmt.msc
There must be some kind of Android device while your phone is connected in fastboot mode. If you see it, update its driver with the Google USB driver v4 pointing at the folder path with the uncompressed files.

Hi I tried what you said, i Turned off my phone and holded the search button and turned it back on, the light went blue and the computer popped up trying to install fast boot i point to the SDK folder to update the driver but it fails.
do you have google talk might be easier on there to talk! cheers!

Just tried, i put my phone into Media Transfer Mode.. my computer tried to install the MTP usb device and i directed the installation to the driver you linked..
Update Driver Software says: the best driver software for your device is already installed MTP USB DEVICE, there is a small yellow triangle on the icon and in MTP USB Device Properties it says: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

You must install that driver when you plug the phone in fastboot mode. It shouldn't work in any other case. In other words, when you plug your Xperia Play being powered on and Android is running it needs one driver, and when you boot it in fastboot mode you need other driver.
Please, install the driver following the steps previously posted with your phone in fastboot mode (blue LED).
Hello, i put my phone into fastboot mode, my device manager shows 1 device not installed S1Boot Fastboot, i right click go to properties and click update driver...
then i browse my computer for driver software i point the location to usb_driver_rev4\usb_driver and it says: Windows was unable to install your s1Boot fastboot!

Try to update the driver using the "choose from a list" option to force the installation, point to the driver folder and select "Android ADB Interface" from the list. If Windows shows a warning message don't worry about it and go ahead.

I just check the Windows device manager with my phone plugged in bootloader mode and it appears as Android Bootloader Interface, so this is the device you must choose from the list when you install the driver.

I had similar problems. I don't know how to fix it permanently. but i do this to make it work for some time.First, download flashtool and install it.Open your device manager and select view->show hidden drivers.Then, delete all your drivers related to xperia play. like the adb interface, semc flash ,etc. All of them in all categories. then reboot your computer into safe mode with administrator and connect your device with flashtool running in your windows in safe mode. then the flashtool will indicate that you don't have the drivers. then,open the drivers folder in flashtool and use the setup to install arc-play-...,flashmode drivers and fastboot mode drivers.then after the installation is over windows will ask you to reboot.now reboot with your mobile connected. after boot windows will automatically install the drivers. then unplug your phone and turn off it and connect in flash/fastboot mode.it will automatically install drivers.wait for windows to say drivers installed successfully or installation failed. don't unplug it in the middle of the process then you will have to start from first.sometimes it will not work in the first time ,then reboot into safe mode and try again installing the drivers and rebooting into safe mode itself and connecting your device.at one point of time flashtool will say your device is connected in flas/fastboot mode.then continue with flashing

I have here adb driver packed in, but if you are using Windows 7/8/8.1 you need first to disable Driver Signature Verification. Here is the link to show you how you do it:

Signed ADB drivers for Xperia M only come with very recent builds of PC Companion (even FlashTool 1.3 doesn't have this drivers currently). I managed to get only them from a local install, download the attached file and run DPInst.exe (or DPInst64.exe if running 64-bit OS). With this package you don't need to disable driver signature enforcement, they work out of box in Windows 8/8.1...

I got from a PC Companion update. Make sure you have the latest version of PC Companion or reinstall it to fix that...

Lol, what are you on about. Please explain to me, what do you mean by unsigned drivers. I used that programme on windows 7 and the drivers work perfectly for me.

As I assume you've already worked out drivers can come in two forms, signed and unsigned.
Signed drivers are generally ones coming from manufacturers and have a valid signature bundled in with them.
Unsigned drivers are generally ones coming from external sources (like flashtool) and do not have a valid signature bundled with them or they don't have one at all.
In Windows 7 there is slight driver enforcement, when you try to install unsigned drivers a window pops up telling that they are unsigned and that you shouldn't install them. You still have the option to install them.
In Windows 8, 8.1 and 8.1 Update 1 there is strict driver enforcement. When you try to install an unsigned driver with driver enforcement on, it will fail. When you turn the driver enforcement off (which is a pain to do) and then try to install an unsigned driver you get the pop up window telling you that the driver is unsigned and that you shouldn't install them, you still have the option to install them however.

I'm trying to revert to 4.2.2 from 4.3 to root my Xperia M dual 2005 that I received brand new today. I have spent four hours trying to get Flashtool to recognise that the phone is in USB debugging mode. It definitely is - USB debugging (and nothing else) is checked in Developer Options, USB connectivity is set to Mass Storage (not MTP) and installing from unknown sources is enabled in Security.
When I connect the phone powered up, this is what Flashtool shows:

But the notification area on the phone shows "USB debugging connected"!!!!!
To flash, I know I have to disconnect and turn the phone off, choose the .ftf then start the flash procedure (preparing files). Then when the animated graphic comes up, I press the volume down button and re-plug the USB cable back into the phone. Nothing happens - no lights on the phone, no flash starts, nothing. This is regardless of whether I keep the vol down button depressed for ages, or let it go after a few seconds.
I'm sure I have the ADB driver installed. I have the latest version of Sony PC Companion. I tried the ADB_Nicky method above from mbc07, using "have disk" and the driver seemed to install no problem. To double check I downloaded the file from the link given above by paper13579 and it detects the phone as a Sony Ericsson, and says the ADB drivers are already installed. I have also uninstalled the device in DM and restarted the PC and reinstalled the driver. Clip of Device Manager attached (as it appears when the powered-up phone is plugged in). Nothing appears in Device Manager when I try the flash procedure as above (phone off, vol down depressed).
I have been using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, and (in desperation) XP SP3, with the same results. I've tried different USB cables (known good). I don't know what to try next.
@zumtotal, ADB drivers are different from flashmode drivers. Turn off your phone, hold Vol Down and plug USB. Go to device manager and see if you have a "SEMC Flash Device". If it show up with an exclamation mark or don't show at all, try reinstalling PC Companion or selecting "Have Disk" and then pointing to PC Companion folder in Program Files...
Please note that while in flash mode, if the phone doesn't receive any answer from the host computer within 2 minutes it'll automatically disconnect and restart the phone in normal mode, so, after plugging the phone while holding volume down you'll have approximate 2 minutes to do the driver install...

Thanks, mbc07, your answer helped. To cut a very long story short, I made two mistakes:
1. When I first enabled USB debugging on the phone I didn't have any data connection enabled (neither wifi nor sim). So when I connected the powered-up phone to the PC the phone didn't install the USB debugging feature properly. After I got data enabled, more installation took place, and eventually Flashtool recognised my phone correctly and saw that it was in debugging mode.
2. I didn't pull out and re-insert the battery to get the phone into flash mode (that is not included in Part 1 of paper13579's instructions in the main 4.3 rooting thread). So when I connected the powered-off phone with the vol down depressed I could see that nothing changed in Device Manager. After I pulled and replaced the battery, the phone was recognised as SEMC Flash Device and the driver installed.
Simple mistakes but they cost me hours. Hope this helps someone else.

Tried to connect my phone to a Windows 7 64bit PC using the USB cable but Windows couldn't find the device driver for D5503. I found these from the Sony site and downloaded them but I couldn't install them manually either. Anyone managed to gracefully connect this to a PC?

I've got the newest Sony PC Companion (thorugh Update) and my System recognized the phone directly.
Did you tried that approach also?

I have a Win7 64Bit System. I have not yet tested on Win8.1 64bit, but will do in the next days.
"Through Update" means, that my (already installed) PC Companion had informed me for an updated version 1-2 weeks ago and I've installed it.
So last Friday I just plugged the Z1C and it the driver was installed and I was able to use my phone on the computer.
If you installed the PC Companion after you connected your phone, than you might have to remove the device within the device manager. After a reboot it should work. At least my experience with other Sony devices.

If you installed the PC Companion after you connected your phone, than you might have to remove the device within the device manager. After a reboot it should work. At least my experience with other Sony devices.

Ah found it!!
I didn't have Windows Media Player installed and that was screwing up MTP! All up and running now thatnks for your help.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate N so I just downloaded the media player feature pack from Microsoft. Not sure how to get it for other Windows versions though.

start -> control panel -> programs -> turn windows features on or off
check in list for Media Features, Windows Media Player should be there, enable it and it will automatically install.
OT: Im on win7 64bit. No problems at all. I did not have Pc companion installed before, but i installed it before connecting my phone for the first time.
just bought a xperia z1 compact, plugged into PC, didn't work.
found this thread, installed PC companion etc... still doesn't work. Windows 7 64bit just shows it with a yellow triangle in the device manager?!
I try to connect through PC companion and it does nothing, just sits there.

I read that. But I have windows media player installed. Who doesn't on a Windows pc, its default?
I have it working on laptop, will give up with the PC.
Same problems as described above.
Following worked for my PC: (I have a Dutch windows (7, 64) and translated the following commands in English. So it is possible that these commands are named different in the English windows version.)
Go to device manager, right click on D5503 (with the yellow triangle), Search for device on my computer (second option), I want to choose from the driver list on my computer, uncheck view compatible hardware, standard MTP device, MTP USB device.
The Phone has to be set on MTP in the USB connection setting to use it with PC companion

USB debugging and MTP already worked successful, but now it's not working anymore.
Following situation:
If I disable USB debugging and plug USB cable into PC then nothing is shown in Windows Explorer and even not in the device manager. The field "MTP" is greyed out/disabled in XPERIA connectivity -> USB connection.
If I enable USB debugging, phone says "connected" however Windows is showing yellow triangle. I tried to download the drivers from http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/xperia-z1-compact-driver/ but Windows doesn't detect them.
If I try to uninstall the drivers right click on D5503 (with yellow triangle) nothing happens.
Phone reset the only idea?

Hi there, I'm having the same problem. I've installed the CWM recovery, but stupidly didn't check that I could access the phone over USB beforehand. Now I'm stuck with a continuously rebooting phone, and windows says it can't install the Sony driver.
When you said you added the above two lines to the android_winusb.inf file, what did you mean? I found this file in the
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\android_winusb.inf_amd64_neutral_d58a98da913cec3a
folder, but couldn't edit it, even as admin.
Any help appreciated, thanks.

Ok, I installed the driver on a notebook and was able to get a ROM (CM 11 M8 snapshot) loaded to /sdcard. But after I installed from zip, I'm still stuck in a boot loop to CWM recovery.
Anyone know how to get out of this?

If you can install PC Companion then it should be fine, the correct z1c driver will be installed for your windows and Adb will work normally. But just some people never can install PCC successfully and they will need to modify their android_winusb.inf to add two lines and let your windows to recognize your Z1c.

I went back to the previous snapshot, and that worked. Phone is up and running now.

I've enabled OEM unlocking and installed the USB drivers. the command 'adb reboot fastboot' doesn't work, just reboots the phone. adb over usb works fine. The official method to get into fastboot 'plug in USB whilst holding vol up/down' also doesnt allow me to get itno fastboot mode, phone just stays blank with a notification LED. I use 'fastboot devices' to see it if it connected. I've tried this on 2 PCs now to no avail
I'm thinking maybe the fastboot drivers are wrong?
Does anyone have any other suggestions or help?

Connect the turned off phone to PC via USB just pressing volume down button (no power) and keep pressing it until you see the LED turning green or blue.

Hi thanks for getting back to me,
I assume you meant the '15 second installer', which I just did just install successfully. I am still unable to see the device with 'fastboot devices' command.
Other info: I have factory reset the phone, made sure oem unlock is checked, tried the same process on another computer. I can get adb mode to work fine, but the command 'adb reboot fastboot' just reboots the phone as usual

That is the correct behaviour.
Blue LED = Fastboot mode
Green LED = Flash mode (for reflashing stock firmware with XperiFirm in case EVERYTHING is broken)
Install these drivers:

When in Fastboot mode, go to device manager, there is an Android device in there (may also be called MTP device).
In the device manager, install a new driver for that and use the ADB driver from C:\Program Files (x86)\ClockworkMod\Universal ADB Driver
Windows will tell you that it's the wrong driver. Install it anyway and Fastboot will recognize your XA2 now.

If it won't work, after that just go to devices and printers and delete Xperia XA2. It will work.
Else, after installing 15 seconds, inside device manager, update the driver of your phone (or mtp device), select local, then Android device, then fastboot. Disconnect the phone and reconnect as before (volume down)
Fastboot is VOL. UP (on this device)! (Not vol. down)
So basically turn off the device, hold Vol. UP and simply connect to USB, hold Vol. UP until LED is steady blue and you are set.
Note: VOLUME UP activates fastboot and VOLUME DOWN enables flashmode and/or recovery mode

I had the same issue with my XA2.
The solution (at least for me) was: different USB cable and different USB-port. As it turns out, my cable was somehow worn out (though data transfer and charging was working quite well). Going into fastboot, the blue led lit very short time and then the phone restarted. Furthermore on my PC it somehow only worked on the one USB port and not the other (both USB 3.0).
--> Maybe trying the most obvious might help also some of you

Did solve this by connecting to different PC. No cable/port/hub change did help. Looks like there was some trouble with drivers (though the same PC fastboots Z3 Tablet Compact perfectly).

Using latest Android SDK tools (i.e. ADB and Fastboot platform tools): platform-tools_r30.0.5-windows. Got it directly from Android site.
I think I had a previous driver for Android already installed or somehow Windows got it. ADB worked, Fastboot didn't. Read online about someone on this forum getting it to work by using XZ2 driver from Sony as they evidently don't have a published driver for this device. The person who posted this solution had reported problems with this driver recently. I tried it anyway.... ADB commands work and my phone shows up when listing devices. Reboot into fastboot mode and the only thing my phone does is show a blue light indicator... no splash screen or logo. To me this means it's starting fastboot but my driver isn't working with it to recognize it as any commands for fastboot return nothing or fail. It doesn't show up under fastboot devices command.
Does anyone have a clue as to what to do?

I have the exact same problem, have not managed to find a solution trying with 3(!) different laptops and 2 different cables. No idea what could go wrong. I checked the device and it says that unlocking is okay. Really frustrating.
Edit: I actually found a way! Once you manage to enter the fastboot mode (light is permanently blue) go to the device manager in windows, click on the unknown android device, and install custom drivers (either by selecting from the list or by picking the universal adb driers from a local folder). These custom drivers should be adb drivers. Once they are installed, fastboot should work.
I had the same problems with my device XA2 H3113 and Win10.
My solution: Try it with Ubuntu. Just grab an 8GB usbstick, install Ubuntu via usb-installer, boot ubuntu and open a terminal
sudo apt update
sudo apt install adb fastboot
