Hello everyone,
I am not as well versed with electronics like a lot of you seem to be, I have ran into an issue and I was told to go on this forum.
So my phone is an LG G8s ThinQ, and I was browsing the web on my phone yesterday until I suddenly got the notification that there are 15 new updates available. I thought that was weird since my phone got system updates like once a year or something. I went to the Update Center app and took a look, these alleged 15 updates were downloadable game apps. In Update Center there should only be like 3 or 4 downloadable apps, which are preinstalled anyway, Facebook, Instagram and some LG Bloatware.
And these 15 games suddenly available seemed a bit sketchy to me.

(Herunterl. means download, Install. means install)
So I let Malwarebytes scan my phone and it didn't turn up anything. I also searched for apps manually that could be malicious, but I didn't find anything either. Never downloaded anything on my phone after my phone's last hard reset. Never done anything sketchy with it. Mostly use it for YouTube, browsing and Whatsapp, that's it.
So I hard reset my phone in order to get rid of that, who knows what caused this issue and what it was doing with my phone. But after hard resetting the update center app again showed 15 available updates. I hard resetted several times, it persisted.
So I became curious and downloaded a few of these game apps. A few of those games you can play immediately after downloading, some others you need to download the app from update center, then the phone opens Google Play and redirects you to a download page for the app... but for some of these games Google Play simply shows an "error" page, these games are not even on Google Play - super sketchy.
(An error occured, please try again)
I played some of those games (the ones I could download fully), and they worked normally as I would expect. After trying them out, I downloaded Malwarebytes and let it scan my phone - and it detected something malicious and uninstalled it!
I hard reset my phone, I am using it still, but with caution. Update Center still keeps showing these downloadable apps and sends notifications from time to time.
So is LG Update Center hijacked? Why is it promoting these weird apps? Is that malware? What is it doing? Is it spying on my phone?
Without downloading any of these apps Malwarebytes isn't detecting anything malicious after scanning... but I don't necessarily trust that. Who knows what is causing this issue and what's going on in the background.
I asked an IT guy I know and he told me that I should be cautious and it would be best if I either installed some custom ROM or bought a new phone alltogether...
I think this whole thing is super sketchy and I wanted to share it with you all, maybe someone here can explain.
Best of love everyone!
Likely an app you installed.
Which OS version?
Anything below Android is suspectable to Xhelper, a factory reset will not eliminate it.
Honestly I can't recall having installed any app lately. And I definitely didn't download any apk apps from the internet or anything like it. Phone runs on Android 12. I read about that xhelper thing, sounds scary .
I was browsing the web, reading about celebrity scandals on some websites when it happened. Maybe those websites infected my phone in some way, is that possible? I put some of the websites and articles I could remember through VirusTotal, but nothing came up on it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/LGVelvet/comments/12lv7vb
It seems like there are some other phones from LG that have similar issues, but besides this single post and another (I believe already deleted??) Reddit post I can't find anything to go on. Another G8 user commented on Reddit saying he doesn't have any issues.

A factory reset would purge Xhelper on 12.
It may have come through as an update for a "clean" app. Payloads are sometimes delivered like that. I don't allow apps to update.
All my games are always firewall blocked as are any apps that don't need internet access to function.
Check the download folder daily for files you didn't download especially when visiting questionable sites. Delete any unknown files.
Get a good firewall to see what's doing what.
Set up free NextDNS to further control internet access and use Brave browser.
Those two options may shut it down entirely but try to find the root cause.
Play with it.
A 3rd party rom isn't needed and may cause more issues. At the worst reflash the stock rom but that shouldn't be necessary at all.
I have the exact issue,
Is there a way to track what apps was updated this saturday? Can be done on PC-systems but not andriod?
Secondly can the install program list be cleared manually somehow?
I am not a big phone user, havent installed any apps for months and havent used the phone for since last week. Still got this crap so I suspect some ap.
The is a LG G6, seem unlikley to be a push from LG. Avast AV-scan found nothing strange.
All games pushed seem to be made by "gameloft"
Update:
I also made a post on Reddit and it seems like this issue has happened to a few other LG owners as well, but not everyone.
Antivirus scans didn't turn up anything so far. From time to time, Update Center still reminds me of these sketchy updates, but I just ignore the notifications. Besides that, nothing suspicious has happened. Battery life is normal, no suspicious downloads or anything...
(On rare occasions phone is a little bit laggy for one or two seconds but that's maybe just age or whatever, I dunno, nothing concerning to me at least, just something I noticed).
I planned on writing an eMail to LG but I still didn't do it cause I forgot, going to do that soon (I hope that they will actually answer).
And I didn't mess with NextDNS or firewall cause I didn't really have the time yet to do so.

I don't know what I had installed for this to happen, last programs I installed from the market before this happened was two airhorn apps. It added fake search and market widget. Changed my homepage URL.
I thought this happening us pretty wild on a cell phone.. I also have bitdefender security installed.
So I don't know what gives. Thought I post to give heads up.
.: sent from my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch :.
bit defender is about worthless and is a resource hog to boot.
I just noticed the Home page in Stock Browser changed to the same.
Did not install any new apps from Market or anywhere else in about a week, just did some updates yesterday.
I have Lookout installed, will do a full scan and look around in TiB for any new apps installed (by Date)...
Weird
It's probably a library packaged within an app that pushes ads and garbage to your device. MP3 Downloader is one of the biggest offenders in sending random ads to your notification bar even when you're not using the app.
This is your best bet in finding the offending app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector&hl=en (Addons Detector)

Badass thanks for the links

My browser was redirecting to: "http://start.infospace.com/?sourceid=6&app=13]....".
Ran 'Addons Detector' and 'AirPush Detector' to find out if one of these AirPush addons is in one of the apps.
With Addons Detector I used the filter 'Push Notifications', did not detect anything.
Had to clear Cache and Data in Settings>Applications>Internet to get back to be able to set my home page to google.
Now after a reboot, so far so good. Still need to figure out what rogue app did this!
[EDIT] Found this thread:
http://androidforums.com/android-ap...rt-infospace-com-has-hijacked-my-browser.html
always always always read a ton of reviews, download count and permissions carefully.
i wont even touch stuff like fart or airhorn, downloading apps(wallpapers,ringtones,mp3's) for this very reason. also another reason to carefully and frequently logg and monitor system activity and background activity. this is also why i strip down my system folder, etc to avoid any risk... every app running could be seen as a potential victim of an exploit. so far my paranoia has led to absolutely no problems, although i have seen some strange activity before for instance. infinite black a game i used to play would always be running in SERVICE mode in the background NOT cached this would be the type of behavior that should warrant removal.
My wife got some airpush crap on her phone from the latest update to the LivingSocial app. She uninstalled it and the notifications have seemed to go away. :fingerscrossed:
Always mark apps using airpush as malware, one star and say so in the comments to discourage devs from using it.
I guess that we are finally starting to see the downsides of Google's quick app approval process (as compared to iOS). Let's hope that the big G does something to thwart this nonsense sometime soon, but in the meantime, the best weapon on our side is knowledge. Make sure you know which app is causing this unwanted behavior, help your friends learn how to detect which app is the culprit, and urge them to uninstall/rate as needed.
I've only ran into one so far, MP3 Downloader, which was promptly uninstalled despite it's generally awesome usefulness.
I can't wait until root apps start messing with the hosts file. That's when the really fun redirecting starts!
Install and use these:

I'm also one of the victims for the start.infospace.com malware and im using the international GS2. My suspect is that i got infected after i installed this app called "Deal or BE Millionaire". Search shortcut has been created on my homepage instantly after i installed that app (Deal or BE Millionaire). Few days later (normally i would use opera mini as my main browser), when i opened up the stock browser, i was directed to the start.infospace.com URL instead of my actual homepage which is google. I found it strange that my stock browser was hijacked so i looked around the web for insights and this was what i did which seems to resolve the issue. Delete all the shortcuts created by the malware app, reset the stock browser to default, and also go to manage applications and clear data for the infected app (in this case it was "Deal or BE Millionaire" for me), and finally uninstall the app and reboot phone.
Funny I'm reading this now as about 30 min. ago my wife installed a live wallpaper on her phone and an ad popped up on her home screen. I uninstalled the live wallpaper & it went away.
Not sure if this will help but should do. Gemini app manager which I got off the market will show you exactly what each app on your device can access and detects advertising code etc in them as well so should be able to help narrow down apps causing issues.
As regards ios approval process stopping malware, while it it is better at it than googles process you can still get malware on ios via the market as evidenced by the report at november www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15635408 as they changed the market last year and malware got on it undetected and was working on non jailbroken devices.
I hate spam but have been lucky and worst I had is those ones that send notification messages. I refuse to use apps that use that advertising method as to me ads should be in the app rather than spam your notification bar.

For the time being I can at least take comfort in the fact that removing any suspected malware, adware or supposed virus off our devices is an easy fix. Unlike my windows based pc.
I've pointed this out on another section of this site when I had my Evo: But why do antivirus/malware apps made for Android only scan an app after its been installed, shouldn't it be scanned prior to installation? Or am I missing something here?
So for those who don't know or have no heard of this, After the Li3 update on the Galaxy S3, the Samsung Default Keyboard in a such broke. Its functional but auto correct is broken. Word suggestions pop up but no matter what, it will not correct any typos or anything along such lines. After speaking to Samsung they basically have said, they dont know wtf the phones issue is and I'm not willing for them to have my phone away for like a month for repairs.. Another person from Samsung told me it WILL be fixed with the next update, the Android JB update came, and nothing was fixed, even a different looking keyboard but no change.
I honestly love the samsung keyboard more than any other keyboard but i cant figure out a way to fix this. Factory wipes of every single type, DO NOT fix it.
About a month i think ago, i tried downloading previous S3 updates so manually update to, but knowing how i tend to overlook things, the phone fails updating to previous versions.
My initial idea was to update backwards to the one before li3, and then try going to li3 and see if its fixed and then update back to jb. Process of elimination was my idea but i couldn't get so far.. For those lazy people who just say root, please dont. I want to find a real solution. I like my phone fully functional including google wallet and ota updates to work flawlessly.
So as i was saying somewhere above in this mess of a post, i believe the issue/glitch/bug or what ever it is, was a corrupt li3 update file that a large amount of people got including me and in this update, it affected a part of the phone thats setting and stuff gets passed over with wiping or factory resetting..
Does anyone have knowledge of how to fix this or what i should do? Last time no one had any solution besides the easy way out by rooting -_-

Don't know a solution for this nor did I experience it but would just like to point out that like I said in the other thread root access alone won't break ota updates or Google wallet. And when you blast people who suggest rooting you should keep in mind your posting on xda-DEVELOPERS so rooting is a natural thing and you won't find too many people scared to do it here. Gotta lol at ur other post tho.
Like I said, I'm not into the root terms considering I'm not going to root that which perfectly doesn't need rooting

Guess its not as perfect as u thought huh
Cool story, download a 3rd party keyboard. Swype beta and swift key3 , soon to be swift key flow are my choices. Both are a million times better then Samsung keyboard.
And everything on the phone works with root access. By no means is it the lazy way out. Takes more work, so in essence not rooting is the lazy way.Just a fyi.

Well generally I'm told to root and flash a custom rom which I don't want to.. But I use SwiftKey 3 and it has to many issues =/ the English set up is missing a lot of words I've noticed, and a lot of the time doesn't want to save words that I save, it takes up more battery than Samsung keyboard and just has some small occasional irritating issues. But yes SwiftKey flow does look nice. Also I just wish someone could look into it who has experience. This post isn't a matter of what's easiest to do, it's a matter of solving an annoying issue that a decent portion of people have, not to mention I prefer the Samsung keyboard more over SwiftKey..
I am coming from Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 and I have installed many apps with no issues. When I moved to Note 3, the same apps that were running just fine in the Nexus 5 and 7 start to have problem:
- Apps opened up, perform certain activity, crashed
- Apps opened up, vertical and horizontal scrolling is really laggy
These apps are like Pocket Informant (calendar app), Pocket Money (financial app), and Shiprack (package tracking), just to name a few.
Seeing all these apps functions well in the Nexus series, the problem seems to point to something within the Note 3.
I am rooted, stock, Knox is NOT tripped. I turned off all animation (0) in the Developer settings. I frozen some built-in apps (see below). Is there anything in Note 3 that I need to UNFROZE or anything I need to do to fix this problem? It's kinda hard to like the Note 3 when the same apps that works well in other phone just quit working...

You froze over 70 apps off the stock ROM? I have at most 20 and don't have the issues you are having. Guess you froze something that is needed.

Yeah, many of these are widgets, or things like Google+, which I froze in my old Nexus phone and tablet with no issue.
I scrutinized each app that I froze to figure out what are its function to make sure it won't cause problem. But it seems something is tied with TouchWiz or vice versa. For example, if i turned off animation, rearranging apps in folder sometimes crash TouchWiz, which is bizarre by itself.
Do you mind letting me know which apps did you freeze? Screenshot is appreciated.

Thanks, Man! Sorry for the delay in replying, the new Tapatalk notification screen is not very intuitive. I.e. now I see each post instead of the forum title, so i got a bazillion entries...
Anyhow, could you repost the image? It didn't show in the forum.
It is in your reply above. I can see it fine. Using tapatalk 4
Looks like AdAway is blocking tapatalk image hosting... that's interesting...
Anyways, I can see it from my desktop. Looks like you use many of Samsung apps (Cloud, Backup, Group Play, etc.) since those were not frozen.
I am going to unfroze Samsung stuff to see if it make any different...

I don't use them, but they have not been a bother. I only freeze apps that cause problems, like Knox, or snoop around like the T-Mobile app.

How about battery life? Don't those stuff keeps running in the background?
If I do a hard reset, will:
- all frozen apps are unfrozen?
- all xposed module uninstalled and system settings like battery icon reverted back?
I am rooted, stock with no KNOX trip
I may have to do this to fix the issues I am having.

Just unfreeze everything. Just remember, Nexus means pure AOSP. Samsung means TouchWiz, which has a ton of things needed to run "correctly."

Just because something is running in background doesn't mean it is using the battery. This phone has lot of memory compared with most so for the most part it doesn't really matter.
Things that use the battery a lot are apps that use the Radio, actively use GPS and bluetooth being on. I only have BT on when I am using it in the truck. I always have GPS on because I don't use many apps that actively use it (Google maps uses it when you are navigating or have it active on the screen, but stops using it when you put it in the background).
Battery life is really in hands of the user and how they use their phone and what apps they choose to use.
For me, I get typical 15hrs of life in my phone (that would be down to the 20's% area) which is more than adequate for me.
I don't have time to play games and my phone is required for business so if the phone doesn't ring when someone calls, notify me when a page comes in or I cant make a call when I need to or access data that I need to access, it is useless to me.
As a result, I don't load different roms, play with kernals and do a lot of tweaking because that typically ends up with something not working.
I do have the ability to quick charge my phone at just about every where I go. So if I know I am going somewhere where I will be hanging out for a long time, I can do a quick charge to make sure I can do it. My truck, each computer station at work and home has 2amp charging available which charges as quick as the original charger that comes with the phone. I rarely need to do that however.
When I rooted for 4.4.2 I blew the Knox flag. No longer cared. At one time I thought I might need it for work but that is not going to be the case and I am confident that if I have a real hardware issue it will be covered with the coverage that I have on the phone.

Yeah, I have done that, but some issues still happen, namely the apps that I use. It could be just the apps, but I am trying to narrow down the problem.
I have used Samsung phone before (Galaxy Note 1 and S4 Active) and even HTC phone. Freezing built-in apps never caused this kind of issue (3rd party apps from Google Play crashed), as long as I don't freeze those I know is essential (for example, I won't freeze "Phone" or "Touchwiz"). If you see from my screenshot above, although I freeze a lot of apps, most are widgets and apps like Google Music, etc.
However, It seems that with Note 3, Samsung make Touchwiz more integrated.
[UPDATE]
Unfreezing ALL the apps I previously froze did not fix the problem. I rebooted, pull the battery, etc.
So I did a hard reset and...lo and behold, all the issues I had disappeared - the apps downloaded from Google Play no longer crashing or have scrolling lag.
There must be something in Touchwiz that "hooks" to these 3rd party apps, though I don't know what it is. It is quite interesting that Samsung will do this (first Knox, now this?), when I didn't have this problem with previous Samsung phone when I installed the SAME EXACT apps and Xposed module.
I will try to freeze the built-in app one-by-one and see if there is any issue there.
My unrooted HTC Desire 816 has just received a rather prominent message sayind "System Update Available. Tap to download the system update." I would like to know what sort of system update it is--is it Lollipop (I read somewhere that this phone wouldn't get Lollipop, and to be honest I was relieved)? Is it an HTC update? How do I know whether I want it? I've heard so many unsatisfactory reports about Lollipop that I have no wish to have it. I've also read some complaints on Play Store about some kind of HTC update. Is there a way to find out what the update is, and, more important, is there a way to refuse it? I just wish I knew more about it and whether I wanted it or not. Right now, there's a big banner across my phone's home screen that gets in the way of my accessing some things not just on the home screen but in play store and other places as well. I've included a link to a screenshot of the top part of my phone's home screen, showing the update announcement that I can't get rid of:

I'm pretty much a newbie with this phone, and I don't want to root it, nor do I want some possibly problematic update to screw it up. It's currently on KitKat 4.4.2, and I'm quite content with that for now. Does anyone know more about what this update is and how I can get rid of the announcement? Thanks in advance for your help.
Um, if you tap the notification it tells you exactly what the update includes.

Thanks very much, FoxyDrew, for your quick response. The problem is that the banner says tap to download, so if I tap it, chances are that it will download, or perhaps even download and install. Then I'll be stuck with it.
I'm wondering whether I can deal with this the same way I did months ago on my Nexus 7 tablet. I knew from all the complaints on the Nexus 7 forum that I did NOT want to install Lollipop. Someone else suggested that if I long press the notification and then select app info, I'd be taken to the play services app info screen, where I could uncheck the enable notifications box. That worked fine on the tablet, but I have no idea whether the same thing would happen if I tried that on the phone (the guy who gave the instructions was talking about his Nexus 7 tablet). Obviously, I could try, but I'm really afraid of prompting the update to download.
So, is it possible to tap on the notification to find out what it is without the tap also triggering the download? And if I find it's Lollipop, can I prevent it from downloading? I know lots of people are eager to get it, but I also know that lots of people who were eager are now wishing they'd stayed with KitKat.

No, a Nexus has stock Lollipop, which is drastically different from it on your phone, which HTC has heavily modded to give the experience that it believes its users want.
And taping the notification won't download it, or install it, it will just tell you what the update is.

Thanks, FoxyDrew, for your follow-up response. I think for now I'll just try to ignore the notification, especially now that the ugly black banner has disappeared and is no longer blocking my access to parts of the screen. I really don't think there's anything in the update that I need or want, at least nothing right now. If I begin to find that lots of people with unrooted HTC Desire 816s have upgraded with no problems, I might give it a try. But I'm really quite content staying with KitKat 4.4.2.
Don't worry htc won't bring any problems to it's devices. If there is any problems in Android Lollipop I'm sure htc team has already taken care of it ! And you better always keep your phone updated. It might include some important updates such as performance improvements, bug fixes and security updates. It's ok if you tap the banner it only shows the updates, after that you give it the permission to download and install or not...

Thanks, Arash94, for responding and for seconding FoxyDrew's statement about tapping on the notification to find out what it is. I'll probably now do so. However, I'm afraid I don't share your confidence in HTC's ability to correct the huge raft of problems people have been reporting about Lollipop. Heck, when 5.0 was such a disaster, I felt confident that Google would quickly come out with a fix that took care of the problems. But the problems persisted through 5.01 and 5.02, and apparently even 5.1 still causes some problems. I doubt that HTC has more technical expertise than Google.
I have this on the root of my storage and I have no idea what it is or does. There is also a folder EyeballSDKLogs. Am I the only one?

Can you be more specific as to the location of that file? Where is the "root of my storage"?

Thats from some app you downloaded. I definitely don't have that. Did you download a VOIP app or messaging app? Verizon Pixel?
Only hangouts
A Google search indicates it may (or may not) be related to Eyeball Chat.
Do you have any video chat on your phone?
Maybe some online based school apps?

Eye don't have it on my phone.
Get it.
Eye don't have it.

I do have vr camera installed. Not much else. I deleted the folder and file to see if they pop up again.
I had installed samsung ipolis at one time.
Anyone come up with any more information on this? Just came across it on my own phone today. Google search turns up a few other posts about it but no info on what it is. I am suspicious that it *might* be associated with the DirecTV app because I just downloaded it today and then happened to notice that folder in / with a last modified timestamp of today. Other than that I have nothing to go on.
I suspect it's some 3rd party tool that many different software vendors will use.
Kind of how like everyone uses Flash or Java for something or other.
After deleting, it was consistently recreated shortly after rebooting. Using this behavior and after much trial and error I found that if I disabled storage permissions for the Directv app it would not be recreated. I don't know yet if it has an adverse effect on the app to leave the permission disabled. I wonder if it is related to the app's commication with the receiver since many of the references to eyeball sdk when googled are related to messaging. Just a thought with no hard evidence.
About the file EYEBALLSDKLogs. I just got the Samsung S7 and also the Galaxy Tab E on promo deal, but my husband and I both have S5 Actives that we have used for a little over 2 years now. Best phones we've owned BTW! Any who, before downloading any apps to either one of the new ones, I of course played with them a couple of days to get used to the features and see what was new. Tab E is pretty much a big version of S7 phone. They both had this new file that stuck out like a sore thumb considering the name of the file is a bit funny, but this file hasn't ever been on our other devices and we had the different messaging apps, I had a couple VR apps but deleted Ayer a few days & this particular file has never shown up. I did notice the DIRECTTV App was already pre-installed on the S7 and Tab E so it's very likely that's were this file is coming from. I just don't understand why after using the Directtv App it shows the file size with 50mb instead of 00.0 before use, but no extensions to the file when I click on it. I did delete it but as soon as I opened the DirectTv app, Viola' it's back.

Similar files
Had similar files on my stock LG tribute HD. Undoubtedly picked them up after getting greedy and down loading free cracked/nodded app not from playstore. Found this searching. Idk but it appears to be a p2p, remote client app. Have not checked Hybrid Analysis site for review yet but will.
*cannot post link as this is my first xda post. The site that has the developers description is slides hate.net eyeball-messenger-sdk-v100
Woukd like to hear input as this raises concerns and is suspicious in nature. Thanks
Hello, I just wanted to chime in and say thay I think it has something to do with the Directv app. The DVR portion in particular. I noticed when I tried viewing my dvr on the app, it had a quick view feature and it must have created that folder because I noticed mine after I was messing around with the Directv app.
