I am using xiaomi pad 5 (miui 13.1.3) for 3 months. Recently I have unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone. After that I installed lucky patcher and tried to block ads(blocking all ads was the main purpose for rooting my device. ) But still ads were showing. Then I manually tried to replace “hosts” file inside the “system/etc” folder. But, root explorer said “can not replace hosts file”. It seems that original hosts file is uneditable. Can anyone help me to replace the original hosts file with custom one?

Thanks brother. I have already tried adway. But, it also didn't work. It seems, the “system” folder is unmodifiable.

Stick a Pihole on your router - it'll take out the ads before they reach your devices without having to root, at home at least
It seems like Luck Patch getting less effective recently it's didn't work for me at all. Adaway is the best tool and if it's didn't work. It's gonna be hard to solve. I suggest maybe find a mod version of the apps

Sorry for delay, no, AdAway works perfectly.
You have to go to the Settings from Magisk, tap on Systemless host, then reboot, now open AdAway, and follow the on-screen instructions.
About the system, in newer Android versions, the system remains just RO (read-only), this is the reason, although you can edit the host file, you can't put it back.

Yes, and not. Unfortunately, there is not a universal solution for this Google based underlined method.
Most users rely on the need to use this, based on modules from Magisk, to make one thing here, and one thing there, I mean, a specific job in regard to that, and not, letting the system completely accessible to RW.
This script works for some device while it doesn't for others, so you could try on, https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-superrw-featuring-makerw-read-write.4247311/ This method worked for my last Redmi Note 10, but not for my current RN11 though.
And also, you could take a read on this method, https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/mount-system-read-write.4270857/

I've searched all forums for a solution to make Viper4Android work on Nexus 9.
None has been working for me without killing Chromecast support.
So I've made two solutions to make it work:
TWRP, Root and Busybox is required!
As system app:
In TWRP install V4A_2.3.3.0_[Quality].zip
Boot Android and open V4A
(Uninstall and) Install driver
Reboot Android
As normal app:
In TWRP install V4A_Conf.zip
Boot Android
Install SELinuxModeChanger and set it for "Permissive" mode
Install V4A
Open V4A and install driver
Reboot Android
I've testet with Google Music and Wimp.
PLEASE hit thanks if this helps you!
If you're on another Lollipop device the tricky part in making the V4A driver stick, is to manually edit the audio_effects.conf on the "Vendor" partition. V4A only writes to the system audio_effects.conf.

I had to edit the audio_effects.conf file in the Vendor folder to get the driver to stick. Add the lines in Step 6 of the following link: http://www.hacktabs.com/how-to-impr...ity-with-viper4android-audio-drivers-effects/
Leave out the lines for xhifi and look at the screenshot for the location in the file to add the lines.
After you do this, try to add the driver again, then restart.

I reverted to a backup before I flashed the Super Quality zip.
Which vendor folder? The /system/vendor/ folder that the driver creates or the /vendor/ folder in root? And the .conf file in /system/vendor/ already contains those lines. Even then, the driver won't stick.
If this provides more information, I'm using Dilligaf's kernel. But I'm positive that wouldn't affect the driver installation.
EDIT: Got it. I copied the audio_effects.conf in the /system/vendor/ folder and replaced the one in the /vendor/ folder. Driver sticks now

Good to hear. I'm not sure why some people have to add the lines and others don't.
Hmmm... The /system/vendor folder is just a shortcut to the /vendor/ folder on my device, so it should be the same...?
I'm on pure stock and as I see the posts, the ones having problems is on other roms or kernels.

I haven't gotten mine to work either. I just noticed it. However, my Oneplus One has IRS working on 5.0.1. It could be how the driver is behaving?

Igothacked said he was using my kernel/ramdisk, I'm not sure what ROM, but the kernel in my boot.img is completely stock, the only edits were to the ramdisk, and I'm positive that would not effect anything with this. I'm not sure about what Roms were being used, I guess it could make a difference, maybe permissions are slightly different or there is a difference with some symlinks with different roms and stock.
Thanks, also working on stock Acer A1-810 too.
I'm also running theLollipopalooza ROM and had to edit the file manually before the driver would install. All seems to be working fine now though. Thanks☺
Nevermind I re-read
Hi guys,
I'm having trouble with the hosts file on my OPO3 and the latest stock firmware.
On Android 6 I booted into TWRP, mounted system and flashed my own hosts file to /system/etc/hosts. This worked fine.
Before updating I to Android 7 I pulled the hosts file and uploaded the same hosts file to android 7. However its getting completely ignored.
I tried various other hosts file, different encoding, blank line at the end of the file, tabs, no tabs, spaces, no spaces, 127.0.0.1, 0.0.0.0 etc but nothing works. If I go back into TWRP and pull the hosts file it actually is the hosts file that I pushed earlier so its not that Android is somehow overwriting the file.
Does anybody know what the problem could be?
PS I am NOT rooted and I don't want to root either.
Thanks

I'm not at home for the weekend so I can't pull the actual file but I used (among others) the one from http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

I also tried the host file I pulled from my phone before upgrading. I'll upload that one once I get back to my PC. Should still have it somewhere.

nothing suspicious except encoding.
can you try UTF-8 encoding.
I tried but it makes no difference. Tried notepad++ as well as windows notepad (files made in notepad++ look messed up in windows notepad and vica versa though).

Great.
Except on that piece of **** of mine this craptastic os is simply ignoring the hosts file. Even if I put in something like 127.0.0.1 cnn.com it won't block ****.
And no I'm not going to root because it breaks banking apps, pokemon go etc. No I'm not going to bother with endless workarounds for that either and finally no unroot does not work and has never worked.

I'm sure that's not on. I've tried Firefox as well and the results are the same. Something weird though is that if I connect to my own vpn server and block a url on the firewall there, somehow chrome still finds a way around it while on Firefox the url will be blocked.
When I got time I'll root and try adaway. It's not really a solution for me as I can't keep root (and unrooting still permanently triggers some apps thinking the phone is rooted) but at least it it should narrow down the problem.
I cannot be the new dm verity in android 7 right? Somehow ignoring files that have been changed? I obviously do get that error/warning during boot because I changed the system partition.
@sjaak1234
Hi
I can confirm that my hosts file has been working fine on
OOS 3.2.8 to 4.0.3
CB5 to OB12
H2OS 7.0 & 7.1.1
So nothing wrong (as yet) with Android OS or Google or even OnePlus. I can share my hosts file if you want to try.
Two suggestions:
use Aroma File Manager to replace hosts file and set permission (644 or rw-r-r).
Use Magisk for root as well working banking apps (MagiskHide).
Good luck :good:
Have you tried creating a symlink to data/hosts?
In order to make adfree android the symlink is required,
Maybe the symlink is also needed to make the hosts file work without the app

Well if you mean like accessing and editing system files I'm not how to do edit them but I know that you can use a app like root explore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.explorer that's the free version the paid one is $3.99 in the US. With that you can move and add files to system folder you can edit permission of files and things of that nature.

Well system file is where all the data and software is at basically everything visible on the phone. Maybe this article could help it deals with modifying samsung rom and flashing it. If you want to read more on it here's the link: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/85703/modifying-samsung-rom-and-flashing-it-on-a-device if you wanted to remove apps or add custom apps to your phone you would modify system file.
But what I thought was important was this;
(I did not write this thread)
< "You should be able to use an archive program on PC and recompress to .tar, .gz, and others. Dont forget to re-sign the archive. Keep a copy of your untouched ROM until you have the modified ROM tested and running.
The ROMs are signed with a signature. When repacking if they don't get signed they will fail in flashing. This link will help explain it.
So basically after downloading the firmware you have to rename it so you can extract the files, change them as you need, recompress them again and re-sign them, so you can flash them using Odin." >
This thread was dealing with modifying CM rom;
< "There are multiple solutions available:
Re-Zip the Image
Advantage: You do it once, and can use the resulting image for multiple devices. That's what I did with CM7.2 for my Milestone 2. Easy enough to do:
create a temporary (empty) folder
unzip the zip file to it
remove unwanted *.apk files from /system/apps (be careful of what you remove, of course)
zip up the directory contents again
Using a graphical ZIP manager (like WinZip or the like), steps would be even easier:
open the zip file with the archive manager
remove the unwanted .apk files
if the ZIP manager requires it, save the manipulated zip
Manually cleanup after flashing, using the shell
This is what ce4 recommended in the comments. It requires you using a terminal emulator on your device:
Flash the image as-is
remove superfluous stuff from the system partition by hand (like rm /system/big/junk/example.mp4)
Manually cleanup after flashing, using other tools
Almost the same as the previous method, but a bit more user-friendly. Disadvantage: this won't do for superflous ringtones and the like:
Flash the image as-is
Use a tool like Titanium Backup or Root Uninstaller to remove unwanted system apps" >

Ok so I may have found a solution for you it requires a pc and to download a program. You'll need your rom and any apps you would like to insert into it. The program is as simple as right click and delete for any apps you want to remove. The program is made by a developer on XDA named "_Logie" here's the link to the Web page: http://m.tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/how-to-add-or-remove-apps-from-a-custom-rom-101986.html and the link to the program is on there or here's the direct link: http://www.solidfiles.com/d/da2dd6335d/
This program compiles the ROM into a .zip if you have TWRP recovery you could do a backup of your previous rom before flashing your current one because you'll have to completely wipe every main partition before flashing new rom to ensure you don't run into problems
Edit: backup system, data, and cache because those are the ones you'll need to wipe also before wiping them just in case I would remove any password that locks your phone because if you try to flash a new rom and fails and your left with the recovery file it'll mess up the password, fingerprints will be forget and backup password will be unchangeable and will require a factory reset to be able to change it.

Hmmmmm ? I think you want to change the boot animation (white Verizon logo red background? ) if so your gonna need to either need to flash a pre-made zip with Flashfire (can't seem to get it to apply from twrp) or your gonna need to manually copy into the appropriate directory (mount system directory r/w copy then change permissions of the file you copied to 644 and reboot) presumably with a root explorer though doable from terminal

Try flashing with flasfire enabling the option mount system r/w and use common paths (probably not necessary but won't hurt) I have had difficulty getting anything other than ROM and gapps to apply from twrp but flashfire seems to work . I'm thinking its due to the fact that flashfire flashes after boot loader and then resets prior to os load.
So I booted twrp.img and installed magisk 17.1 and updated to magisk 17.2 beta and root is there via root checker. However, regardless of what file explorer I tried to use I cannot replace or delete files in vendor/libs or anywhere in the system folder. Can someone explained to me why and how I can overwrite files in vendor/lib?
Is the file explorer showing root permissions in Magisk? I've started running in to a similar issue recently myself. It seems random but I can view and edit some files in the root partition but there are others where I am denied access. Before a couple of weeks ago I didn't have this issue. I'm not sure when the problem started but from what I have read FX file explorer and there dedicated root addon will work. I haven't had a chance to check for myself though.
I have the same issue. I can't save my edits in build.prop.

Worked for me on stock October security patch with Magisk 17.2 and Total Commander. I use Google's default Kernel.
What has worked for me in the past was to uncheck the two radio buttons on magisk main screen. {The two advanced items} then I would press the install button right below. After doing that I would be able to change files in directories I once couldn't. Worth a shot

Thanks for the info. It works! :good:
Until TWRP is available for this device, root must be done by flashing patched boot image via fastboot. I'm still in the waiting period for the bootloader unlocking, but I prepared files in the meantime. Maybe someone will find them useful. Attached are stock boot and patched image with Magisk 21.1, EEA ROM version. Just unzip them and flash from fastboot.
Full version: V12.0.6.0.QJSEUXM_20201117
Edit: patched boot image reuploaded, the previous one didn't work (at least on my phone). This one has been tested and is working fine.
hello,
having the EEA version 12.0.6.0, as a boot patch can I immediately give the modded boot, in fastboot?

You can flash patched boot image directly, or just hotboot it (fastboot boot patched_image.img) and install Magisk from Magisk manager.
hello,
I did and at the moment everything is ok.
thanks
but there is a strange thing, Mixplorer, it does not change the permissions of the files, yet it has root permissions
I think the root is not perfect, I can't change the permissions of the files

Which files on which partition with what kind of permissions? RO partitions must be remounted as RW, but it's not always possible and using Magisk is usually a better and safer approach.
hello
let's talk about system partition files how can I remount as RO?
using Mixplorer, if I click comeback as RO, it tells me failed

I keep my system partition RO so I can apply OTA updates, so I haven't tried it. You could try another app (for example Total commander), but you will be probably out of luck because of Android 10 limitation. Read more detailed explanation here https://android.stackexchange.com/q...m-partition-locked-to-read-only-in-android-10
I would suggest using Magisk module for system modifications.
hi
i tried other app manager like root explorer and es explorer, but the result is the same. i also installed magiskhideprops module, but my phone is not supported as fingerprint yet
What are you trying to achieve?
the terminal command to try to mount as RO would you know?

Why don't you do it with a Magisk module? Once you install a module, you can edit it directly in /data/adb/modules folder.
i read android 10 problem, would you recommend me to mount with termux, installing vim?

If you know how to edit system mixer files, you should be able to build your own module (or adapt one of the existing ones). But of course it's up to you, I'm just offering a well known and working solution to your problem.
