I went to sleep last night with the battery at 15%, slept for ~5 hours, woke up, and the battery was only at 50%. Is this normal? Does it take this long to charge for anyone else?
For reference I'm using an HTC charger from a previous Android phone, would using the Samsung charger make a difference?
Yes it seems like too long for too little of a charge. Give the Samsung one a shot.
Your using a charger that at very best pumps out 1amp
The default note 2 charger pumps out 2amps
In other words your charger will take twice as long as it should to charge your phone

If you use note 2 charger, than it can charge to full within 2 1/2 hours.

I agree, the Samsung charger with its 2A is necessary for this large battery if you want it to charge fast.

It's there any harm done to the battery if you use an old charger from a previous Android?

I haven't seen any ill effects on any of my phones from using different chargers, only different charging rates.

were you charging from mains or pc ? from pc it takes .... ages to charge ( like 1% in 15~30 mins) but from mains it takes more or less 2-2.5 hours to hit 100%.

It's from a HTC wall charger. I changed it to the Samsung charger that came with the phone. Will let you guys know how it goes when I go to sleep tonight.
Will the USB cable make a difference? I have a super long USB cable that I like to use instead of the short default cable that came with the phone.
I know about the 1 Amp / 2 Amp charger ratings, but unlike the original post:
I have my Motorola Xoom 10.1 plugged into the wall, and i use a USB OTG cable from the Xoom to charge my Note 2 overnight (so to only use 1 plug socket).
So i assume this is providing 1 Amp or even less to my Note 2.
I often have it charge my Note 2 from 5% or less all the way to 100% in under the 6/7 hours sleep i get.
Somehow the original posters 35% charge in 5 Hours seems very slow.
with my Samsung box set usb cable, it still takes 8 hrs to charge 100%. sometimes the red led is on but without a single percent charge. I am talking about charging with the usb connected to the laptop. if plugged in power, it takes less that 3 hrs for a full charge.
I remember my previous win7 was perfect, may be the new win8 is having some problem or not, I don't know?

My Xoom must give out some good Amperage if i can get a 100% charge in 6/7 hours then.
The "only" thing that matters is the voltage.
The included charger puts out 5V(+-5%) and 2A.
Too little voltage, and it won't charge.
Too much voltage and you will burn a fuse or the charging circuits in either the phone or the charger.
The phone chargers (no matter what brand it is) are within the limits, so don't worry.
The current (Ampere) shows how much power your charger can deliver at a given time, but the phone itself decides how much current it can take.
A standard USB-port (1.1) gives out 5V and 500mA.
I've built LED cables based on this.
USB 2.0 and higher are supposed to be able to give up to 1500mA under certain circumstances.
My motherboard has a pair of special USB-ports which can recognize cameras, phones, etc. and charge with a higher current and even without having the computer turned on.
While charging through USB-ports a full charge takes ages for me, 6 hours while sleeping will never even charge close to 100%.
On the other hand, charging though the adaptor that came with it or any other adaptor that can pump some juice is blazing fast... 3-4 hours and it's back to a 100%.
Okay, this will sound too silly but this worked for me! Encountered and suffered from the same problem..
It used to take 8 hours to get fully charged...but in time i noticed this silly and weird thing...should work though..
Before putting the phonw on charging, kill all running apps...then when you plug the charger-DO NOT TURN THE SCREEN OFF BY YOURSELF...let it sleep automatically. And it'd get charged lighting fast...it worked for me!

If i put my Note 2 on charge where its at 25% battery, in 30 mins my battery gets charged to $85%! And you should ALWAYS use the charger that comes with your phone instead of a charger made for another phone. The HTC charger is designed to charge that HTC Phones battery. Each charger is different in the sense it provides different amounts of power. The Note 2 battery is huge so the Note 2 charger is designed to push a specific amount of power to it to charge it in a reasonable time.
For e.g. If you use the iPhone 4 charger to charge an iPad, in 5 hours it will charge the iPad to approx 50%, and if you use the original charger to charge the iPad the iPad will be more than fully charged. Thats because the iPad charger is designed to accommodate the huge battery inside the iPad.
Also i read an article not too long ago that said that alot of science goes behind these smartphone / tablet chargers and how its dangerous for the charger and device / battery if you start mixing and matching chargers.
My $.02 cents!

from 0% do 100% 2hours 30min. its very fast for 3100mah baterry.
I use my iPad3 charger to charge my N2. It juiced up faster and my N2 does not heat up when it is fully charged.
I use my iPad3 3.1amp in car charger as well when I drives around

Hi.
I have owned my SM-T700 for about a year now and its a beautiful tablet! But after updating my firmware to 5.0.2, i have had a problem that really messes up my time with the tablet.
My tablet has slow charging. Like extremely slow. After the update, it usually took around 9 hours to charge completely when at around 30% of battery. Now when I charge it, It only charges around 5% per hour!
I used the app called Amperes to measure my charging rate and it was at 750mA but then dropped to 30mA. I tried resolving the issue by switching to 4.4.2 but I cannot find the XAC version of it unfortunately. Also,
I am not using the samsung charger that came with the device, I am using the samsung charger for my broken s3 but it says that they take in the same amount of mA. I also tried with my cousins tab s charger to no avail.
Thanks! I would be grateful for any help!
Are you using original or hi-quality cables with a real 2.0 amp charger?
I've a Tab S 10.5 LTE updated to Lollipop from the first day I bought it, so I'm not sure if the charging speed differs from KitKat.
When using the original 2.0 amp charger and cable I've noticed that the charge is slower while I'm activelly using the tablet, but that means about 12% hour rate.
If I try with another Samsung charger rated at 0.7 amp it can recharge the tablet slowly and only when it's idle, or just slow down the battery discharge if I'm activelly using the tablet.
I consider this normal, as the tablet can easily surpass 1 amp discharge rate when the display, cpu, radios are all busy.
To get full charge rate of 1800mah , I normally see 1500mah/1600mah you need to use the original Samsung 5.3v 2amp charger and original cable as a lot of third-party charger will only charge slowly as the Tab S cannot recognize the charger is powerful enough, so it only uses a slow charge so not to damage the charger, even with the original charger after the battery reaches 80% fast charge stops and it is normal for the charger to use lower and lower ma as it reaches 100%
John.
I have just bought the UCH10 from Sony to try out on the fast charging, its seems charging at the same rate as a regular 2.1A Charger.. Anyone facing this issue?

I don't know about the UCH10, but I know with my Powergen charger I see it going into HV (fast charge) mode. (The charger I have has an indicator for when it's in 9v mode).
However, I have noticed this device's thermal throttling is pretty aggressive. You need to let the thing idle if you expect it to charge at any reasonable rate thanks to the Snapdragon 810 being a power hog.
Confimed the UCh10 charger fast charge working
Only got 13% from 1% for 15mins
What happened!!
Mine came with the UCH10 charger and am using my short Sony usb cable that came with my headset (EC300). I went from 4% to 100% in 1 hour and 35 mins. At the end of the day with my bluetooth headset and smart watch conneted all day (12 hours) moderate use emails, mms, calls. I have about 42% remaining. It only seams to be getting better with each charge. Today it went from 5% to 100% in 1 hour and 22 mins.
Perheps Sony's fast charging is to speed up overall charging at a faster rate. As i was from Note 5, its charging takes only 10 mins to jump from 5% to 38%!!
Perheps they are both using different fast charging tech?

Both are using the same under different names. Samsung named it "Adaptive fast charging" and the rest use qualcomm's name "Quick charge".
For example mine is in the box with standard 1.5 normal charger, but I am using the charger from my dead note 4 (yes it is a quick charger one) which is charging z5p at the same speed like my note 4. Also I am monittoring the charge rate, and I can confirm that samis Adaptive charger charging at max using qualcomm's quick charge standard our z5p devices.
Edit:
If note 5 charging so fast it must be another tech from Samsung (or wrong battery stats - believe me I experienced these few times on my note 4 during flashing AOSP roms).
Cheers
Edit 2:
I can remember that note 4 when stock (tw) is charging much more aggressively during initial charge (upto around 50%, and then it just slow down), while AOSP is fast charging constantly (lower rate compared to samis stock tw rom) but use quck charge upto 90-95%.. It is a setting at the end. Yoi can force set this with custom kernel.
Can i use my old moto turbo charger for fast charging ?
Which is 12v*1.5amps ..
Tried mine and no same charging speed
You can use it but it won't "fast charge". The Honor 7X isn't a "fast charge" device.
BUT (yes there is always a but), use the provided plug... it's a 2A output. It will charge a little bit faster with it than ith your 1.5A one.
Sadly no fast charging, takes me 3.5-4 hours to charge regardless of what charger I use.
My other phone only takes 1 hour 30 minutes...
Wow..

In The United States of America BND-L24... You are looking at 2.5 hours max. from 0 to 100%.
I'm usually, 4 hours S.O.T. a day average and still @ 50+ %..... only once have I drained it in 2 long days.. but I pretty much watched a movie.. made a sandwich and it was @ 100% again.

Carefull to the USB wire you are using. They have not the same caracteristics.
I've bought one without reading... and it can't charge any device faster than... 0.5A... So my new 7X or even my old HONOR 7 just discharge faster than it charge...

Yes, you are right in that regard, like trying to force extra charge when it cannot do so.
I did however purchase a new usb cable 2.0A and it does charge slightly faster, around 3 hours instead of 4...
I've lost my honour 7x original charger
