Hi everyone,
I am planning to get an unlocked S22 (AT&T unlocked, fully paid off) from the USA to my country (India). The box says it is following:
Model: SM-S901U
S/W: S901USQU1AVA7
Even though it is unlocked, i can see the SM-S901U does not support 2 5G bands which are used my in country (unlike the generic unlocked SM-S901U1). My question is that,
1) Since the s22 is basically from samsung, with the carrier models having control over the software, will i be able to flash to the generic unlocked firmware and model SM-S901U1 and get support for the other 5g bands too (i see the generic unlocked version SM-S901U1 has the 2 other bands that i need)?
2) Will the hotspot work and will i be able to recive OTA updates?
3) And the main question, will i require an AT&T SIM for the flashing process?
I was digging around the ultra thread for some info:
OTA and Non-OTA Firmware for S22 Ultra SM-S908U and S22 Ultra SM-S908U1 Versions
See Post #2 and #3 for the Links to the Firmware All of the firmware posted here can be flashed on any U or U1 Device. Each of the firmware's are NOT carrier dependent and only has carrier labels listed in order to have an idea if you might get...
forum.xda-developers.com
If someone can help/guide me, i'd be great!
Thanks and Cheers!
1. You will be able to flash s901u1 firmware (you will need a patched version of Odin to do so) but it still will not have the 5g bands, it's a hardware thing.
2. Hotspot will still work and you will be able to receive OTA updates when on s901u1 firmware.
3. No you will not, even when the phone is locked you will still not require a sim

Thanks for such a quick reply
I had thought that the bands were locked via firmware (was hoping that samsung gave control to the carriers to control the bands via software). Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case
Since the s901u1 has those bands available (i checked here: https://devicebeast.com/devices/samsung-sm-s901u1-galaxy-s22-5g-uw-dual-sim-td-lte-us-256gb), i guess that will be a better buy for 5G.

Hi guys I got a Verizon N975U note 10 plus and its stuck on Verizon I'm trying to flash it with U1 so I can pop a sim in and changes it to that carrier. Do I just need to flash it with the U1 file here https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=297980 or will it need something special the build # is SQS2ASJ8

Can't say for sure it would work on U firmware (lack of first hand experience to verify) as it would for U1.... As long as the phone is network/sim unlocked then you should be able to just put the new sim card in it (and the phone will read the sim card settings and apply them).
Flashing the U1 firmware instructions on flashing U1 firmware have been at link below (bottom of first post). You can get the firmware from that thread also.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80072192&postcount=1
Of course keep in mind that none of this will matter unless the phone is sim/network unlocked. As long as you meet the requirements from Verizon (or the phone was blacklisted for either non payment, lost/stolen or a warranty/insurance exchange that wasn't sent in) then this shouldn't be an issue.
its locked to Verizon at the moment when I put a sim in it will work for a bit then say its not allowed to use another carriers sim at this time.

Either wait until the phone is able to be unlocked by Verizon, or call them and request that they unlock it for you. Until that happens you will not be able to use a non-verizon sim card.
I would also advise keeping the U firmware for Verizon installed and not flashing the U1 firmware, as the Verizon sim/network unlock requires the carrier firmware... At least that is what I am gathering from various discussions/threads.

Is your phone carrier locked to Verizon? Has it been activated on Verizon's service for 30 days? If not, I'm pretty sure firmware flashing won't help anything. I'm on a Verizon MVNO and they wouldn't even unlock it for me to use on their own network. I had to activate with them for 30 days.
However, now that mine is unlocked, it's still locked down to Verizon in a lotof ways. My SIM card for my current carrier can't apply an APN, for example, so I have to do it manually. I'm contemplating flashing U1 to fix that issue (I hope).
I have a very similar situation. I bought a Note 10+ N975U (Verizon Unlocked) and I want to take it to U1 and then maybe to Sprint. I tried to go to the OP here and follow instructions. So I downloaded and selected all the files for U1 and apparently I did the "no-no" and got stopped with the SW Rev Check Fail : abl Fused 2 > Binary 1. I looked at what my phone is on and it is the SJ8 (November?) from Verizon. I'm guessing that means the BL file (bootloader?) in the U1 folder (SGO?) is older than what is on my phone? What do I need to do differently? I already tried without selecting the BL file, but it still gives the same error. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The bootloader of the U1 firmware you were trying to flash is lower then what is currently on your phone. So yes you are correct that is the no-no. Also you can not skip the bootloader file when flashing, so that wouldn't have worked.
If you read through that thread you will have found others asking how to go from U to U1 firmware. Also the error within regards to trying to flash a lower bootloader version firmware was also asked and answered. I would encourage you to browse that thread and the Q&A forum because this process has been discussed on more then one occasion... It might contain helpful/useful info for you.
In short you need to get a newer firmware release. Using samfirm or frija apps, or the sammobile website look for the firmware your seeking. Google searching will show you how to obtain samfirm, frija is posted the forum here if I recall correctly.
For U1 the model is SM-N975U1 and the region is XAA.
My sm-N975U AT&T note 10+ has never ever received any updates.
It's currently at Android 9, N975USQU1AS12, security patch: September 1, 2019. Since I got it in 2019.
I see that the unlocked version SM-975U1 AT&T receives updates frequently and I can easily get the firmware online.
I've not even seen any Android 10 firmware for SM-975U AT&T.
So is it possible to flash SM-975U1 AT&T unlocked over SM-975U AT&T.
Or even just to make it US unlocked with no carrier so I can receive updates from Samsung?
You can flash the N975U1 firmware onto the N975U (and vice versa) so long as the bootloader is the same version (or higher) then what is currently installed on the phone.
Three things to keep in mind:
No way exists to downgrade the bootloader... So if you flash firmware with a newer bootloader and you decide you want to go back you will not be able too.
Bootloader version can be found by doing the following. Looking at your About Phone > Software Version look at the baseband version info.. Start at the far right and count 5 characters to the left (with the first character being the far right one). The number that is the 5th character in will be the bootloader version that is currently on the phone.
The USERDATA isn't always included with the U1 firmware should you desire the AT&T version of it. You should be able to find that in this thread,
For an example the red number is the bootloader version:
N975U1OYM3CTE7
For anything else this question has been discussed here a lot so you won't have any issues finding information about it.
So this will unlock the phone? Does the same go for the Sprint version?

You can flash the firmware from the N975U1 to the N975U (and vice versa). It doesn't matter the carrier, only the model number matters.
Just be sure to be mindful of the bootloader version.
Flashing the firmware from the N975U1 does not have any relation to the network/sim lock. For network/sim unlocking you will have to ask your provider to do this for you
The term (or name) "unlocked firmware" is derived from the phone it comes from.. The N975U1 is the carrier/network unlocked variant sold by Samsung.
so if i put the, U1 firmware to n975u and i'm out USA. now I will receive all the new updates automatically via OTA?
Excuse me, I am new to the forum, I have a question for you, I have an at & t SM-N975U, this at & t firmware does not update outside the USA, I am in Mexico, which firmware should I use, I want it to update automatically via OTA here in Mexico? t-mobile firmware or U1 firmware, I really appreciate your answer,
hello, my question is similar but regarding the carrier. My Note 10 Plus is AT&T locked, if I flash the SM-N975U1 over the SM-N975U, will that unlock the carrier so i can use anyone outside USA?
No. It won't. You'll have to have AT&T unlock it.

Hello can you please help me too
I'm super new here
So i have the N975U and i live in Europe and i don't get any updates cuz my Note 10+ is the AT&T version and now i want to change it to N975U1 so i can get updates from Samsung themselves.. from Sammobile i downloaded The N975U1OYM7GULD-(XAA) model and also N975U1OYM7GULD-AT&T model while the current one i have is N975USQS7FUI7 so both of them i think should work because they have the same bootloader so my question is since i want to get updates to which one should i flash my phone with? I heard the XAA is better because u get updates directly from Samsung themselves ( even when I'm in Europe ) and the AT&T version is also N975U1 but I'm not sure if i will be getting updates because now I already have the N975U ( probably AT&T model that's why I'm not getting anything ) So what do you think i should do?
I'd appreciate ur help
And sorry for my broken ass English hope you understood..

And should i use Odin patch or just the normal odin? I actually wanted to flash my phone with the Germany version but i don't know if it will work!!? ( You'd use odin patch you want to change region! ) so idk if it would work if i change it from N975U to N975F which is Germany model !!?
...because I use the phone in Europe. Given the firmware is North America I was wondering whether I need to change the modem in ODIN to get better reception/ 5g in Europe. The last Samsung I owned was the S4 where updating the modem to your region was ubiquitary. Not sure if this is still necessary and doable., so hoping for some advice.
Second question: I have a US S20 locked to AT&T. Will flashing the U1 firmware (incl. factory reset) also unlock the phone?
Cheers!

You can't mix exynos firmware and Snapdragon. I doubt you can use just the modem portion of a European exynos code. You can flash U1 code freely, but that does not unlock the bootloader. Do you mean you can't put any sim other than AT&T?
I didn't mean to unlock the bootloader (since that's not possible for US phones) but the sim so I can use my German sim card in Europe in this phone.

Do you know if I run the risk to brick my device if I tried to combine the exynos modem with a snapdragon rom? Cause otherwise I might just try it.
Hello everyone.
I just bought what I thought it was an unlocked S20 Ultra over the internet and, nevertheless my sim card form my country works well (Im from México) the OTA updates dont work.
The last security update it has is from March 2020 and I have checked the system update option but it says that my phone is up to date.
I have seen that maybe that the most recent update can be forced using Odin but I dont know what firmware to download for my model so it can be updated regularly via OTA as I only have found firmware options for another USA Carriers that I dont have, and Im scared to brick it for choosing the wrong one.
Curiously enough, the phone model and IMEI correspond to the AT&T USA variation, however, the start up screen doesnt show up any AT&T logo and the phone doesnt have any bloatware from any carrier. So Im not sure if the phone was already flashed with some fw?
The model that it displays is SM-G988U and the S/W is G988USQU1ATBN'
Hope you can help me to have updates on my phone.
Thanks!

Your device is a US Branded Variant, most likely Verizon/ATT. Go to Settings, About Phone, Software Information, Service Provider Software Version. On the bottom row the last three letters will verify which carrier is branded. If it is in fact AT&T you can download the appropriate fw here. Be sure to select the appropriate carrier in the drop down menu but be aware AT&T typically doesn't offer it's firmware to be accessed online.

Fast download latest Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra firmware SM-G988U from USA (T-Mobile) with G988USQU1ATBN and Android version 10

You MAY need to be on AT&T's US Network to receive OTA Updates but you should have no problem making and receiving calls and texts in Mexico.

You're most welcome. Verizon is in the drop down menu and since they've merged with AT&T it should be the appropriate FW but it doesn't load after selecting it which reflects AT&T's ongoing efforts to block updates outside of it's proprietary platform. If you're unable to access AT&T's network inside the US the other options are downloading the FW on Samsung's Smartswitch app or acquiring it on ATT/Verizon website. Good luck!
I have a paid-off Permanent Unlocked SM-G990U from T-Mobile. My carrier is US Mobile on the Verizon Network (CMDA). It does work on the T-Mobile Firmware but there is no Wi-Fi calling, MMS works but I can only receive MMS (can't send). It's not actually connected to CMDA according to AIDA64 and yet Verizon somehow still works, and also there is T-Mobile bloat, and software updates are slower than on an unlocked device. Even though the U1 has 2 sim slots but the U doesn't and the U does not have an unlocked firmware from what I know, would the U1 firmware still work fine with Cellaur and etc on the U fine despite having only 1 SIM card slot? Since I'm pretty sure the hardware between the U and U1 is the same otherwise.

I've flashed U1 unlocked firmware on U carrier firmware before (S9+ days) so I'm thinking it still should be possible on modern devices, though you need patched Odin to do so (search for it on XDA/Google)

I will probably most likey back my data up try it to see if it works, if not then i can just revert to normal firmware
You can flash U1 rom without any problem. My device is from Verizon and I flashed successfully the U1 firmware. You will just need to choose correct CSC for your carrier
