bricked - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Hi i have a pixel xl. I had it rooted via magisk and I had LOS on it. But then i decided to go back to stock. I did that but i forgot that I had to uninstall magisk so i locked the bootloader and wound up with a stock rom rooted. It worked for a while them it started crashing. Im not too sure what happened or what i did it was a year ago. So anyway when i turn it on it says the bootloader is corrupt which it did before. Android flash tool did not work wok. I can boot into recovery but i dont know what to mdo no.
can someone please help me.
Also I am able to use fastboot I just tried from my pc. I just dont know what to do to fix this. I know I have to somehow get twrp back on the phone and flash the magisk uninstall.zip. But this was so long ago i dont even remember which version of magisk I was using or which magisk uninstall file to flash.

i was able to get a flash-all .bat to work but im still in the same position. Basically the phone gives me the message your device cant be checked for corruption then goes on to the google screen and eventually the screen goes blank and it starts over so it is bootlooping i guess.
Can anyone tell me how i can flash twrp.img on the phone with fastboot? Right now the current active slot is b. I tried typing fastboot flash b then the twrp.img file name and it gives me an error. Am I supposed to be flashing to a certain partition?
Please someone help I am not very good with the command line. I dont know all the lingo

Stuck on team win recovery project please help

I have no idea how to root or anything like that, I bought this oneplus 3 and had a update a week later.. so when I did the software update it took me into teamwin recovery mode and now I don't know how to get back into my phone please help....
Did you buy the phone second hand or did you try to flash TWRP yourself? It shouldn't have TWRP installed by default.
Regardless, you can use TWRP to flash the latest update.
Given that you have TWRP, I'm assuming that you have an unlocked bootloader. Did you notice a warning pop up everytime you reboot your phone before? It should say something along the lines of "your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted". If not, you'll have to unlock it (it wipes your phone in the process).
If the bootloader is unlocked, you can simply download and flash the latest zip for OOS 4.0.3 in TWRP. This will update you phone and replace TWRP with the stock recovery (so you don't run into this problem again in the future when installing an OTA). If you don't intend to modify your phone in any way, then this is all you need to do, your phone should be functional.
There are plenty of threads with detailed guides on how to do all of this.
I'm also stuck on TWRP after stupidly downloading the latest OTA and I don't know what to do!
Phone won't boot normal, just goes off.
Situation:
- Bootloader, Fastboot and TWRP wil load.
- Device seen by windows
- Zip install in TWRP gets stuck at 'patching zip unconditiontally'
- Another zip flashes, but gets stuck at the end, no reboot option (manually but that's not the way)
Can someone please point me in the right direction? I don't care if I lose data, just want my phone back!

Simple, check the OnePlus D/L sites for this one http://oxygenos.oneplus.net.s3.amazonaws.com/recovery_op3.img and flash it by TWRP or fastboot to RECOVERY. Boot once with the official Recovery and all ist fine again.
This is issue of using a faulty twrp so for that when ur phone us booting up go to fastboot and flash twrp 3.0.4-1 and everything will work

Similar Problem here:
just wanted to flash latest OOS 4.0.3, so I flashed back stock recovery with flashify and rebooted into recovery mode to flash the already downloaded OOS 4.0.3. zip. That's when it began to go poop! After rebooting it just went dark with no Chance to power it on again! No dice with power button, Volume up/down + power button, nothing! Not even the LED's are blinking when plugged in. So this one seems to be basically dead!
I got it once booting again after randomly pushing the buttons (after x minutes!?), but everytime I reboot the phone it just shuts off without beeing able to power it on again. At the Moment it's dead!
Any ideas what might happened? If I get it on again, should I immediately reset it to factory Settings?
I am kinda lost here! Any help/ideas would be much appreciated!
Flashify? Never used it and never trusted apps which flash stuff on a running system. Use fastboot and reflash the recovery partition. Link to recovery is in my former post.
fastboot flash recovery PATHTOIMGFILE
Thank you for your advice! Still a lot to learn! Got it up again, will try as you suggested!
It appeared that my stock recovery file was corrupted , but all is fine again! Thank you very much!

I may have been the person you traded with to get the OnePlus 3, but I took the phone back and after 5 hours I got it up and running.
The phone would boot to TWRP, but even after wiping the entire system and dragging a ROM zip to the internal storage, reinstalling did nothing. It just kept booting back to recovery.
The solution entailed the following.
Download stock recovery IMG. Flashed through TWRP. Rebooted recovery and now was back to stock recovery.
Download the official OxygenOS ROM zip from the OnePlus website and changed the name to update.zip
Next I downloaded Android studio for access to ADB. I had never used ADB before, but I knew this was needed to push a file to the phone.
Needless to say, ADB kept freezing my computer when I would type in the commands to side load.
I deleted Android studio and installed a minimal ADB/Fastboot I found online. I opened my command prompt, typed the command for sideloading, and immediately got my installation starting. It took about 10 minutes to fully install. When it was finished, I rebooted and had a fully functioning OnePlus 3

Hey guys
I tried playign with the new magisk. Decided to factory reset and ran the script, and keep getting:

Any suggestions? I thought factory reset, literally reset everything...
Thanks in advance

A factory reset erases the partition where user data is stored. It does not touch any other partition. You're getting that message because the phone detects that the boot image is no longer stock. If you want to undo the changes you have made, you'll have to flash the stock Google image.
Ok, SO teh message is normal?
I flashed factory 8.0.0, and I get the same message,

I haven't had a chance to test Magisk on this phone yet (I returned mine and am waiting on the replacement) but when I've used Magisk in the past, the first boot took a really long time. Give it like 10 minutes or so. If it never makes it past that, something went wrong and you should flash the stock image.
Oh wait, you get the same message if you flash the stock image? Well in that case, I'm not sure what's wrong. You may need to re-lock the bootloader before that message goes away, but make sure you're on 100% stock software before that happens. It might have something to do with the fact that Pixel devices have A and B firmware slots, so if you bring A back to stock, B might still have the Magisk patched image on it. Someone more familiar with Pixel devices should chime in.

Well, to clarify...
I was able to get Magisk to run fine. But decided I wanted fresh stock image, so went to flash stock google image, flash went fine, but at reboot i get the same thing. could this be a slot issue?

I'm thinking so. I'm not sure what the proper procedure is for designating which slot you're flashing to on the Pixel 2's, but it's possible that you now have 1 slot with stock firmware and 1 slot with the Magisk patched image. For the original Pixel devices, the partition names were boot_a and boot_b. So I think, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, fastboot flash boot <file> will flash the file to whichever slot is active, but using boot_a and boot_b will flash to those designated slots. So to fix your issue, you need to make sure that both boot_a and boot_b contain stock images.
Keep in mind that I've never owned a Pixel before now (although I'm pretty comfortable with flashing other android devices), and I'm not 100% sure about this, so you might not want to take my advice.
relock the bootloader.
Here is what I did:
Fastboot flashing lock
fastboot flashing lock_critical
then tried running the flash-all.bat, got FAILED being it was locked
SO then I ran
Fastboot flashing unlock
fastboot flashing unlock_critical
ran flash-all.bat, seemed to have gone fine. Phone reboots, then after you get the circle, where it says "erasing", after about 10 seconds it reboots and says "your device is corrupt..."
Ughhh, I hope I didn't brick this thing???

all is good. I wish I was able to delete this thread

Make sure you have the latest version of adb and fastboot from the developer site.
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html
I got the message as soon as I unlocked the bootloader. It's normal
I had this issue with old platform tools and could not get my device to boot no matter how many times I flash-all'ed or changed the current boot slot. Upgrade to the latest platform tools and run the flash-all from that directory. If it's still not working, I also unlocked critical: fastboot flashing unlock_critical , so that the flash-all could flash my bootloader as well.
Like some have said already. This message appears every time you boot after you unlock your bootloader, whether you are still running stock OS or not. Same thing happened on my 6P. Only way to get it to go away is relocking the bootloader. Don't worry though, your device isn't really corrupt. Just a scare tactic by Google.

This is somewhat true. There are 2 different messages. One that says you are running unsupported software and the color is orange. This message pops up on every boot while the bootloader is unlocked. The other message says your device is corrupt, in red. The phone will not boot. I just ran into this issue while trying to flash the november update
EDIT:
I was able to resolve this by updating adb/fastboot. I updated adb/fastboot before but i guess i did it on my other computer.
So was there any way to fix this without having to relook the bootloader? I've already had to set this phone up a second time after the longest marathon session of trying to get both TWRP and magisk to live happily together on this device, so I'd rather not do it again if it's avoidable.
Literally all I did to cause this is press the button in TWRP to switch to slot A, and after rebooting I immediately got the new scarier message that requires a power button press to boot, after which you get the regular nag about the unlocked BL. The device then hung at the Google padlock screen, so I used the buttons to reboot into BL then tried TWRP. TWRP then hung at the splash screen, so I hooked up to the PC and fastboot booted TWRP. When I tried to switch back to B, strangely, it said I already was. I pressed the button to switch to B anyway, then rebooted. The error happened again, but at least the device boots. I tried rebooting again to see if it had cleared up, but unfortunately not.
I would really like to be rid of this without having to start over. I do have a nandroid but I don't even know if I trust a restore to be successful and potentially make **** worse. Thanks in advance!

I was able to switch back and forth between the slots with fastboot. I thought maybe I was getting the error because they had two different boot images installed, so I backed up my boot on side B, and then restored it to slot A. No dice. I still get the error message.

Hm, ok. If you're getting kernel failed to load errors from the bootloader, then maybe you flashed the wrong boot.img for your device?
Either way, try flashing the XT1922-9_no_dm-verity_boot.img.
To do so, make sure you have TWRP. You don't have to install it, but if you wanna root you can flash it...
So either do..
Code:
fastboot boot moto-g6-play-jeter-patched-twrp.img
Or do..
Code:
fastboot flash recovery moto-g6-play-jeter-patched-twrp.img
After you have TWRP running, then flash the boot.img by doing..
Code:
fastboot flash boot XT1922-9_no_dm-verity_boot.img
All of these instructions are found in the thread for your device [GUIDE][ROOT][Moto G6 Play][JETER] TWRP, Root, and magisk installation guide
There is also a step to flash a modified fstab.qcom file to remove forced encryption as well which you should look into. But honestly I would like to see you get outta this situation you're currently in then we'll get the rest done after

Ok, well we're getting somewhere at least. Sounds like you have the right boot.img at the very least. Now we need to find you the right stock firmware (or even at minimum a system.img and vendor.img from some else with the same device).
I'll look around to see what I can find.
Next thing I need from you is to connect your device to the computer and reboot to bootloader and get me the output of..
Code:
fastboot getvar all
and copy/paste it to https://hastebin.com or copy/paste it to a text file and upload the text file as an attachment here (or wherever you want and post the link) so I can review it. That should tell me what I need to know to help you a little better. Do NOT just copy/paste the output into a post please.

Moto G7 Play XT1952-4 Recovery

Hello, does anybody know when a recovery for the moto G7 play XT1952-4 might be released? I am eager to root my new phone.
I am also looking for the recovery of Moto G7 Play, I unlocked my BootlLoader to make Root and I do not think any Recovery
You don't need TWRP to root the phone. As long as the bootloader is unlocked, you can root with Magisk. Select the Link To Installation Instructions and follow the Boot Image Patching section. It requires using ABD commands, and although it looks/seems complicated, it is actually very easy. Plus, you will have learned something as well as root your phone.
If the G7 Play is actually code-named "Channel", then this link will give you stock firmware for you to download and extract the stock boot image.
Magisk boot.img
Ok I got the retail Canada ROM. Now I am going to extract boot img and patch it with Magisk manager. Once patched I am going to flash it to my phone using abd fastboot? At this point it will be rooted or do I use SuperSU to root? Under software channel on my phone it says "Bell" but the build number and model number matched up. XT1952-4 PPY29. 105-57 so it should be good hopefully.
Thanks
Error: cannot open 'magisk_patched.img'
Must be wrong Rom. Everything worked fine until I had to flash it. I put patched IMG right in adb directory and opened a command window from there but when I tried to flash it I got the error cannot open file. Oh well I think I will wait for a recovery it's the easy way for me.
Thanks
Code named 'channel'
There are 2 more versions of it in the list you provided. Not sure what the abbreviations are before CA for Canada but I will try them too. If I get the same error when flashing these patched boot.imgs I will have to wait for a recovery. Hopefully it won't by be too much longer. I just hope there will be a recovery.
Thanks
Continued error when flashing patched files.
I have tried 3 boot images from 3 different retail Canada firmwares. All 3 patched alright by magisk manager but when I try to fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img I get the same error cannot open file. I must be doing something wrong. My phone's bootloader is unlocked so unless someone has a solution. I will definitely have to wait for a recovery. Hopefully soon!.
Thanks
Dumb question...when you are attempting to flash your patched boot image, is your phone in fastboot mode? Also, you may be able to extract your boot image via ADB. It's been a while since I've done it and am having trouble finding the proper commands, but you can try this:
adb pull /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/boot stockboot.img
Click to collapse
It may or may not work. I hope it does but apologize if it does not.
Furthermore, you will likely have to wait quite a while for a custom recovery (TWRP). The G7 play has A/B partitions, which makes ROM building and recoveries very difficult. There is no separate "recovery" partition with A/B...the recovery is combined within the boot image. FYI - I have a Xiaomi A2 Lite that has A/B partitions. We still don't have a 100% working TWRP after 9 months. Custom ROMs have just been coming out slowly. I was able to root with Magisk using ABD commands though.
This link might provide clearer steps for installing Magisk.
Best of luck!
Yes, it was in fastboot mode. I will keep trying with your new intructions. Thanks for your help.
My mistake
I did not even have adb fastboot installed I was opening a command window out of the folder that was left over from uninstallation. I am about to try it again. It should work now. Stay tuned.
So far
Okay, so I installed adb fastboot and flashed the patched boot file from the RETCA firmware. I got this message " failed (boot a)" . So I tried the flashing the 2nd patched boot file that was from I think BWACA firmware. With this flash I got " not signed or corrupt" then the phone failed to start with bootloader log to confirm.
So I took the original unpatched boot.img from RETCA and flashed it. This fixed the phone so it would start fine making me believe that it's the right boot image but maybe the other firmware boot.img would have fixed the failing to start issue as well. So I think I need to pull the boot.img from the phone itself like you suggested. I am going to read some more and continue. I will figure it out. Any suggestions would be of great value.
Thanks.
Getting Closer
I realized that the magisk zip file that magisk manager downloaded did not get unzipped so that it could patch the boot.img properly. Fixed that. Flashed the boot.img and it said "okay" but said "(bootloader) image signed with key bad key" so I think I will have to pull the boot.img from the phone itself. So I am about to read up on that then I should be able to flash successfully for root access.
Thanks

A few posts back you said you flashed the stock RETCA boot image. If that's the case, then if you successfully pull the boot image from the phone, you are simply pulling the RETCA boot image you already flashed. It seems that the RETCA boot image is the correct one for you phone. I would start completely from scratch with that. To verify which build number you have, go to Settings>About Phone or ( Settings > About Phone > Software channel) and scroll down to Build Number. Match it up to one from link with all the firmware images.
The only other thing I can say is that you should read and completely understand what to do prior to doing it. I am sorry you are having difficulties with this. It really should not be so hard. As I don't have the phone I cannot be of much more assistance. However, once you figure it out, perhaps you can write a quick guide to help others.
EDIT: You should be rooted. SEE POSTS 10-13. Did you check for root?
EDIT 2: I'm assuming that since you unlocked the bootloader, when you reboot the phone the screen goes black and says "Bad Key", correct? That is normal for Moto phones.
2nd, after you root, when you reboot the phone, the screen should go black and say "N/A". Again that is normal for Moto phones.
I understand what you are saying I would also expect the N/A on the black screen that's when I knew I successfully rooted my old phone. I must have the right boot image if flashing it fixed the startup failure. I am going to start all over again and see.
Have to give up.
Tried and tried it's just not going to work. I think it's the patching because the boot file starts out as 32mb and only 18mb after being patched. Flashing has no effect on my phone even though it says 'okay' when I flash. I never get the N/A on boot unless there is a startup failure. Oh well have to live with ads among other anoyyances. My Moto g4 play is rooted I can use than in case a solution comes up. Thanks for all your help.

DNS66 is your friend! I have used it on other unrooted phones. It was decent from what I remember. Good luck!
Sorry that root wasn't working.
EDIT - If you are up for a little more testing...I just found this. I don't remember if it's what I had to do for my Xiaomi or not, but it makes sense. (Further research - No I did not have to do this). Scroll down to method #2 and look for the part about A/B partitions:
fastboot flash boot_a patched_boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b patched_boot.img

Click to collapse
Edit #2 - I don't give up easily LOL
After any of your attempts to flash the patched_boot image, did you ever boot the phone and open the Magisk Manager app? Doing so should ask to install Magisk, if not you must tap on the "Install" button. Then choose "Install" > "Direct Install (Recommended)" to install Magisk on the phone, and reboot when finished.
Neither do I
I have been trying everything since we last talked. Just so you know the link labelled as "this" in your last response is not working. I always opened the magisk app after flashing to see if it was either installed or gave me the option to do a direct install unfortunately, it did not. I have magisk manager installed on my rooted Moto G4 plus and it gives me that option to do a direct install. Will definitely try your new info. Thanks so much for more help. I will let you know.
Still no luck
Without the link I got the jist of what you were saying by the quote boot_a boot_b I tried both consequtively and then tried it for ever possible retail Canada image still no luck. Thanks for your help. I don't know why it's so hard for this phone. I will keep researching.
I'm at about the same place where jwreidmoto is. I purchased my unlocked g7play from Best Buy. First I tried the files in the channel/RETUS folder, these all caused a bootloop. I then tried in the RETAIL folder... still no joy. None of the version numbers quite matched up, and none worked to restore the phone. I finally found a matching file in the AMZ folder, which I was able to use to get the phone to boot up again. So I used that boot.img file with magisk and when I flashed, it gave no errors, no indication anything failed. Unfortunately though, I do not have root access. I started over from scratch and did the process over with the AMZ boot img again, and again no errors, but no root. I've never rooted before, so I don't know if there's another part somewhere I missed, but I do feel like I was able to follow the directions on the g7 thread by mingkee, and performed the steps accurately. I supposed it's just the wrong boot img. The about phone says the software channel is US Retail, and the build number is PPY29.105-36. The RETUS folder only has PPY29.105-43 and RETAIL folder has five different zip files, but none were PPY29.105-36.
You are doing it right
You have not missed any steps. If the boot.img fixed the boot loop then it should be the right one. I had the same issue with a startup failure and fixed it with the RETCA boot.img so I am also using the right one also. I think it's an issue with the model of phone, this method just does not work. We might have to wait a while until someone comes up with a solutuon. I know it sucks.

Question Bricked after Magisk update

I was using Magisk canary build, on update something went wrong and the phone would just hang indefinitely at load screen. I had the latest firmware from updating just last week, so I unpacked it, flashed a new boot.img, and then tried running a fresh root from magisk. On trying to flash that boot image it still would hang at load screen. I then tried switching to stable build but same problem, at this point it started getting wonkyer and I shoulda stopped 2 steps ago. It hung and wouldnt boot even with fresh boot.img from firmware, so I tried switching active partitions, it said I couldnt do it cause "slot change not allowed in lock state" but then shows me as on b whereas I was on a, and now I cant get out of the bootloader, can only push the images that dont require fastbootd (I can push boot.img and like some of the random small ones, I havent tried too many as I am unsure of correct order, but CANNOT push system or recovery, system says to be in fastbootd, recovery says "flashing non-hlos image is not allowed in lock state") my phone says I am not allowed to unlock flashing, I tried running fastboot update and passing in the full firmware download as the update, but it says it is missing the "android-info.txt". So if anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
