Greetings everyone!
I wanted to bring attention to the site operation.
According to https://tosdr.org/ site which ranks privacy score of websites, XDA gets Grade D.
Remarks:
They store data on you even if you did not interact with the service
This service keeps user logs for an undefined period of time
This service may collect, use, and share location data
Tracking via third-party cookies for advertising
Terms may be changed any time at their discretion, without notice to the user
I think for such an important high level tech site like this, this is unacceptable.
I would prefer better privacy protections for the developers and users.
Thanks.
I'm not concerned...

Ok so I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet but I came across this great site that allows you to download torrents directly into your dropbox. I figured this was worth posting considering we all got 48gb of free Dropbox storage. You just sign up and link your dropbox account =D

It's only free in beta.
Your unlimited traffic is temporary. Our project is at its beta-stage yet. When we launch the final version, users will need to purchase traffic to use the service.

cant imagine it will last long
Well provided the price is reasonable, it wouldn't be so bad to pre-load your torrents into your dropbox when you're away from home. Kind of like a seedbox without the seeding

Dropbox Bans BitTorrent Startup Boxopus Over Piracy Concerns
ErnestoJune 26, 201283 boxopus,
CensorshipPrint
Dropbox has banned the new BitTorrent startup Boxopus from accessing its API. The company fears that BitTorrent’s piracy stigma may rub off on the successful cloud storage service. The Boxopus team is disappointed by this anti-innovation move. Thousands of dollars in developments costs have gone down the drain for what they believe is an irrational fear imposed by a growing copyright lobby.
On Saturday we covered Boxopus, a new startup that allows people to download torrents directly to their dropbox folders.
The news was quickly picked up by many other technology sites and as a result the service’s member count surged to more than 50,000. Boxopus didn’t go unnoticed by the people at Dropbox either.
However, where most reviews heralded the usefulness of the service, Dropbox sees it as a threat.
Although Boxopus is a neutral technology, BitTorrent’s piracy stigma is something Dropbox wants to stay far away from. Apparently, the company believes that a ‘perceived’ link to piracy is enough to ban Boxopus from accessing its API.
A few hours ago the Boxopus team received the following email from one of Dropbox’s engineers (emphasis added):
“It’s come to our attention that latest Boxopus features could be perceived as encouraging users to violate copyright using Dropbox.”
“Violating copyright is against our terms of service, so we are terminating your app’s API access. Once your access is revoked, any API calls your app makes will fail.”
Shortly after this email the API access was pulled, effectively killing the Boxopus service.
To the developers the news came as a shock. Not only was Boxopus adhering to all DMCA requirements, Dropbox also explicitly approved an alpha version of Boxopus weeks earlier.
At the time no alarm bells went off, so the developers continued investing in the product.
“Once the alpha version was approved we were pretty sure that Dropbox was okay with it, so we put our efforts into optimizing the service. It took us 3 months to finish the product with a team of 5 people, which was a $30,000 USD investment,” Boxopus founder Alex tells TorrentFreak.
But now, just a few days after the service had its breakthrough online, the service is dead. Aside from the massive financial loss, the Boxopus team is also disappointed by the way innovation has been stifled by Dropbox due to a perceived threat that may not even be justified.
“This behavior makes it hard to believe that developers are treated fairly and innovation is welcomed at Dropbox. It seems like legit and pre-approved applications may be blocked simply by someone’s will although they act within the scope of company’s terms and international laws,” Alex says.
The Boxopus developers are not blind to the fact that people use BitTorrent to share copyrighted files, but that was in no way what their service was designed for.
“Many people see BitTorrent as a synonym of piracy, however, a lot of interesting legal stuff can be found in BitTorrent networks and this is what Boxopus is made for.”
Nevertheless, Dropbox has made up its mind and a BitTorrent download service is not allowed. To save what’s left the Boxopus team is now negotiating with other cloud storage services to continue their business with a more tolerant partner.

So i was browsing through the "data usage" feature of of my GSIII and i noticed that the "News Republic" app had used about 863 MB of data as a background process since August 6th! I am usually on wifi so hopefully this is a non-issue but I think this is an absolute ludicrous amount for an app I rarely use.
Just want to give this as a warning to everyone, since many of us TMO folk have data throttling caps.
Anyone else experience this?
Request that you contact News Republic, offer to help
Hello elterible,
While many apps continue to run in the background, especially on Android devices, News Republic should not be using such a significantly high amount of data, even for several weeks of time. It is possible that you are looking at the total aggregate data of all apps for that time frame, or that a setting is misconfigured. We would like to help you to resolve this, so that you can continue to use News Republic in the comfort of knowing that it is no more a "data hog" than most other news apps, and less than many!
We value all user comments, and would offer to put you in direct contact with our developer team at: [email protected]
Please write to us, and I will have a developer review whether any of our settings are using more data on your specific device than it should.
We appreciate that you use our app to read your news!

Wow, i was not expecting the company to reply to my post directly.
I have since uninstalled News Republic but let me try to reinstall the app and try to recreate the data usage that i saw. While i am confident that i did not mistake my aggregate usage for just News Republic usage, if i cannot replicate my high data usage results, I will adjust my post here on xda accordingly. I will follow up directly to the e-maill address you posted with my results.
Again, thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my issue. This clearly shows that mobile republic takes pride in their products and sometimes, good service and response time alone is worth the cost of admission
Looking for developer for Paid gig.
Sooner the better.

I would prefer not to get too detailed as I have had ideas stolen before. That's the problem with having good ideas without the skills to do it yourself, or the resources to hire the big trusted company.
As concise as I can be, I will list some of the functions needed.
Registration: Name, Contact info, a designation such as a title or skill (one of 4-5 choices).
A location and radius within which to function. This will be country wide. i.e. Seattle, Chicago, NY within 25 or 50 or ?? miles.
This should be linked to one or more web sites, one for the client and one for the app.
This app is for clients to be able to schedule themselves and be able to hire others from a list of the skill choices in the app. This aspect will have a membership charged yearly.
The app is also for the general public (free or $2.00 ??) to access the scheduling in particular geographic areas. i.e. by city or radius of stated area.
Right now I am doing research on how much work this kind of project would entail. Specifically am I looking at $1000.00(unlikely) or 5 or $10,000 or more to realistically start and complete.
Design is as important as function. The Dev should be more than just technically capable. He / She must also be able to see my needs and suggest options geared for a successful launch and a sustainable management.
Like I said, first I need to understand the industry baseline. I do however have some resources interested in investing.
Any information you can impart would be greatly appreciated and pending specifics will result in a job
Thanks for responding
Peace
JOe
I'm guessing xda peeps take security seriously so I'd like to point out that the VPNSecure deal mentions it's safe and protects you. Well according to various reviews it fails DNS leaks so it's not considered safe.
https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn-warning-list/
VPNSecure – VPNSecure is based in Australia – a 5 eyes country that is not good for privacy. VPNSecure was also identified in an academic paper for leaking IPv6 and DNS requests, which leaves its users exposed to “surveillance and malicious agents.” The same paper also noted that VPNSecure has a number of egress points in residential ISPs. This suggests that users are unknowingly being used as endpoints in a P2P-like bandwidth network – i.e. user bandwidth is being stolen (although the paper could not confirm this). (See here for more info.)

5 eyes means that under a gag order they can force them to log and record everything you do over VPN.
Also lots of reports recently over "lifetime" subscriptions have proven to be not the case. Unless they state it's for YOUR lifetime then it can legal be the lifetime of the OFFER. SO tomorrow that can say it's over.
