Hello. I have recently unlocked my phone and now I am flashing some custom roms to test around with, but some roms when they don't install, they leave 112 gigabytes of junk and then they make the storage inaccessible? What's the reason behind this? I know how to remove all of the junk, but I just want to know why does that happen?
Normally you have to format data to remove the junk. The "junk" is actually your internal storage and data which is encrypted by default.
Because they are encrypted, the phone can't understand what they are and they get classified as "other" in settings.
And since they are basically nothing more than junk files anymore (because they cant be decrypted) they fill up your phone.

My phone broke (HTC M8) so I'm using my wife's old phone (T-mo GS4). She had a fair amount of stuff on it, and as soon as I got my hands on it, I rooted it, factory reset it, and flashed a new ROM (from 4.4 to 5.1). Now I only have 6GB of free space on my storage. It says the total is 9GB, and I already know that the other 5 are devoted to non-accessible storage that make up the phone's operating system, but 5GB on an empty 16GB phone is just not right. I know for sure that I didn't wipe internal storage because I never click that option when I flash (otherwise my recovery zips would have to have been transferred a second time). How can I hunt down the old data?
Use an app to search what is taking up the most space in internal SD. I use es file Explorer for file managment and it has that option, but surely there are other apps
Sent from my SM-G920T
Since a couple of days I am not able to update my apps anymore. Error message is that there is not enough space left in the internal memory.
The concerning phone is the HTC M8s (TMO-NL), 16 gb, SuperSU, stock recovery, Lollipop 5.0.2, SW 1.10.114.11)
Is there a way I can transfer apps to the SD card? (symlink?) All the big fish (like the facebook app, 400!!! MB, whatsapp etc) are not able to be moved to the SD card, which to put it politely, annoys me deeply. My previous phone I have used for 2,5 years (HTC One X 64 gb) and have never had this issue with a flooded system partition.
Thanks in advance for your ideas!
why not update to 6.0.1 so you cand format the sd as internal ?

You're getting your facts wrong. Apps downloaded from the Play Store and other places are not saved to the system partition. System partition is the OS, and the only system apps are the ones that can included with the OS, such as built-in Google apps or "bloatware". The exception if you specifically installed apps as system apps under root privileges, but this is not the typical situation (you'd know if you did it).
Apps are saved in the data partition, and AFAIK, there is no limit, beyond the size of the internal storage. On a 32 GB M8, you have around 25 GB of storage.
It may just be that you need to delete or move to SD some files that are not necessary.

I really don't feel much for going through whole the installation process* again. I am glad I finally got Adblock plus working and to be honest I only want the d*mn thing to function normally.
(* Run a RUU since TWRP messed up my OS software version, having to re-root again etc etc.)

Yes, you are right, I meant the data partition indeed. I will change the OP. Anyway, the data partition is almost full and I've moved everything I can move to the SD already.
So is there a way I can increase the data storage, since most apps tend to store their information in that partition? I would like to sacrifice the emulated Sdcard0 space to increase the /userdata space.
I've attached a screenshot of "df " as additional information.
And yes, I know the Sdcard0 is already almost full, but for that Whatsapp is to blame with their ridiculous impossibility to relocate the media folder, for which I am wondering if I could make a symlink to my actual SD card.
All in all I am rather disappointed in the M8s, if I had know beforehand it would be a struggle for just loading app updates I would've bought the old M8 .
Edit: I've already deleted all the factory delivered bloatware from T-mobile, as far as the google apps (games/books/music/etc.) I am still working up the courage to remove those, because I don't know if it will render my phone with all kinds of bugs.

You should investigate whether there is an MM update for the M8s, and if it supports adoptable storage (its supported on the M8). Adoptable storage would allow you to use your SD card as part of internal storage, and greatly increases your data storage capacity. It sounds like exactly what you need.

Again, you seem to be confused about the system partition vs. data partition. Deleting pre-installed apps isn't going to help you, as it only frees up space on the system partition.
I'm trying to do a full backup of my HTC 10 in case something happens and I need to restore the device to a working state but I'm failing to understand which partitions should I include for that.
These are the partitions I have:
System (3360MB)
System Image (3824MB)
Cache (0MB)
Data (excl. storage) (11451MB)
Boot (64MB)
Recovery (64MB)
I know that Boot is important, but I'm not sure about System or System Image. Which one should I pick and why? Then there's the question of Data... All backup guides I saw mention "Data" but it doesn't contain the "excl. storage" string nor it takes as much space as the one listed on my device. This is a problem because I don't have an SD Card installed and a full backup with all those partitions (even if I just want to include Data) takes too much space and I don't have that much space left on Internal Storage.
What should I do?
https://twrp.me/faq/whattobackup.html
I personally have a System Image backup that I'll likely never need (I just RUU when I want to update) and when I'm doing normal backups I do System, Boot, and Data for my "just in case" backups (like, for if a new ROM doesn't work out).
Additionally, I just transfer all of my files (DCIM, Downloads, and any music or other media files that may be hiding elsewhere in /sdcard) to my laptop for off-site storage and easy access. I don't worry much about my external SD as nothing should touch that unless I tell it to, and I try to keep everything on that card anyway, but I always double check.
If I could make a suggestion: A good 32GB microSD card is under $20 at Walmart (or at any online retailer, obviously) and it's nice to have a physical card that can move around and be separate from the internal file system. I would never assume that $20 is pocket change for anybody, I've certainly gone through seasons where that's an unjustifiable expense, but if you've got some freedom in your budget it might be a worthwhile investment. I got a 64GB card for not much more than that, and it sure is nice to have room to store stuff without hitting the limit.
On Android Nougat (LineageOS), I flashed firmware and ended up re-installing LineageOS, etc. Recovery (TWRP) did not see my SD Card, and LineageOS sees it, but wants to format it even though it has tons of data presumably. I had it configured as 'adopted' storage. Same device. does flashing firmware erase the SD card or re-create the key? I had it setup as 'adopted storage' and all my TWRP backups are on it. Can I retrieve this data? Is it even still there?
If I do need to re-format, should I still use the 'adopted storage' choice? I want to make sure that whatever I store on the SD card will be usable after I flash a new ROM, firmware, etc. Is it just a matter of meticulously backing up all the data from the device while it is in a working state? Boy, I don't want to start over if I can avoid it!
Thanks!

Adopted storage extends your internal space, I always use external storage, but I have a 32gb phone.
If you want to access data after reflashing rom you must use external storage.
And for the data recovery I don't know if it's a chance to recover it.
Ok.. looks like I am going to start over. If I choose external storage, can I install apps on the external, and use it for storing the same kinds of data and expect the phone to use it, just not the same contiguous virtual partition/volume?

You can move some apps, but not all of them.
zips for twrp you can storage with no problem.
music, videos, photos, etc you can storage with no problem.
Hi all. Is it possible to wipe everything but the internal storage before flashing a different ROM? I have a load of stuff on my storage and don't want to have to copy it all off and then back on again afterwards when want to change to a different ROM. Used to do this all the time on my other phones
Thanks
I'm sorry to say that I don't think there is a way. It's been asked a few times before, but I haven't found any way to do that. That's one of my pet peeves for not having MicroSD card slots on the Pixels (and many devices these days).
If TWRP is ever updated for Android 12, plus made available for the Pixel 6/Pro, then we should be able to do that.
I routinely backup everything in internal storage to my PC for the express purpose of doing what you ask. I use wireless FTP but you can do it anyway you want. It is easily restored after wiping. As far as doing this with TWRP, I've all but given up hope for that to ever work again. It is effectively obsoleted I'm afraid.
I have my p6pro internal storage synced to OneDrive with the onesync ultimate app, except for /data , but Swift backup takes care of that.
