My files are not deleted but lost - Redmi Note 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello forumers, please help me...
There is a problem with my Note 8 Pro phone. My files are in ghost form. I can't use them, open them, view them. I can't find some either. I didn't delete any of them. They suddenly disappeared. Some are in ghost form, I can see them but I can't use them I leave: "File doesn't exist or has been"
While playing with the Redmi Note 8 Pro brand M1906G7G phone, when I opened the gallery, the images in it started to twitch (flickering while being processed), all the images were gone in less than a minute. When I tried to check the files from the file manager, I noticed that all the files except system were not in place. So all my files suddenly disappeared before I knew what it was. Nothing happened to my contacts, sms, calendar information and externally installed applications (games, programs). The "second space" wasn't on when this was happening. When I looked at the size used from the storage it was 35.5gb, as if it was reset. The advanced settings of the phone are open, but the phone is not rooted.
I tried various file recovery programs, they couldn't find it. Except for the aforementioned files, only 3% of the files were found. So I think the files are lost, not deleted. There is a loss of at least 30gb. I'm in a predicament. Can anyone help with information on what happened to the files and how to get them back?

[Q] Gallery3D raises the dead...

I searched as best I could, but couldn't find a match to this particular issue.
I do have a rather weird issue with Gallery3D, that I've noticed after switching to OpenDesire, in 4.0.10 and 4.0.15.
Until recently I have been using various Sense based ROMs, where photos taken with the phone are stored in DCIM/100MEDIA and I always just used HTC's gallery app.
Now I'm on OpenDesire 4.0.15, which stores phone photos in DCIM/Camera, and uses Gallery3D to display them.
The thing is, when I try to display photos from DCIM/100MEDIA, taken earlier on various sense ROMs, Gallery3D shows some completely random photos instead. The thumbnails in 100MEDIA display correctly, but when I tap any thumbnail, it expands to the grainy fullscreen version, and is then replaced with a sharp and refined version of *another* picture.
It shows photos that I have taken with this same handset, but imported to my computer and deleted from the phone long ago. That is, photos that aren't even *on* the SD card anymore.
I have tried the following:
1. settings > apps > manage > Gallery3D > force stop + wipe data and settings
reboot
no luck
2. rename 100MEDIA to something else.
repeat 1.
no luck
3. Create new folder DCIM/Test
Copy files from DCIM/100MEDIA to DCIM/Test
The copies in DCIM/Test work well.
Hm.
4. factory reset, wipe cache + dalvik
reflash OpenDesire (4.0.15)
no luck
5. Made a flashable zip with most recent Gallery3D.apk from this thread and flashed it over the one included in OpenDesire 4.0.15
No luck (yes the update succeded, different file size )
Ok, fine, so I kind of solved the problem in attempt number 3, right? Well, yeah, except that I'm uncomfortable about my phone magically raising photos from the dead that I've deleted long ago.
Have you guys got any ideas or input?
Well, your deleted pictures aren't exactly "dead", they just aren't in the master file table of your SD once you hit delete, but they can definetly read. But to avoid going offtopic, you can simply back up your files, format the SD card and restore the files. Everything should be ok.
As to why this happened, it's possible that your Master File Table got corrupted somehow (or Android's MediaManager isn't reading it correctly). But I can't really say much since it's difficult to tell what the real cause is (perhaps you didn't "safely remove"?).
Either way, reformatting should help. And keep using Gallery3D from that post, it's one of the best around
Reason
Even i experienced the same issue,,but couldn't find the solution,,,,but i figured out why it is happening..!!
My gallery 3d app was showing the images i took long back which are no more in the SDcard..!!!how can it be possible..??
The reason is,,
>When we delete the file in the sd card,,the operating system will just mark that that memory location with some special character ,,in fact the data will appears to be deleted but truly i won't ...!!
>when we add new files to the file system that space will be overwritten ,,,by the new file...!!
>So in our case the file which appears as the thumbnail is in exact same memory lactation as the old deleted image....so the thumbnails will be stored in different location as the cache,,,,,
>this is the reason why it show the thumbnail but when we click on that,,, it shows the original data resides there....!!
> its just a bug in the Gallery app
>And it will happen only when we delete the files inside the gallery app...
>Next time try to delete the files in Some file managers like Astro

Camera won't save pictures, can't dl whatsapp-images

Hey Guys,
I'm having a problem since i first rooted my Nexus GSM: When using the camera, the clicking sound appears, but there is no new thumb in the corner and no picture saved in the DCIM/Camera folder. If I'm trying to do a video, the app crashes.
If somebody sends me a picture in Whatsapp, I see the litte thumb, but if i click it, nothing happens (and of course - no picture is saved on the phone).
I check the permessions for the camera and the DCIM-folder and I let the RecoveryMod fix all permissions. Do you have any idea what could have gone wrong?
First I installed Revolution HD ROM, today I did a reset and installed AOKP ROM. Problem stays the same.
I hope you can help me!
EDIT: Checked data & media, too.. everything is rwxrwx--x
Ok, I fixed it.
If anybodye else got this problem: I simply deleted the DCIM & WhatsApp-Folder.
Don't know why i didn't try that before -.-
Sorry guys
permissions the cause
hi, i had the same problem. PERMISSIONS SEEM TO BE THE ISSUE....
I backed up and restored my memory with the tool kit.
Under "BACK UP OPTIONS" i selected "3. backup you Internal Storage [virtual SD Card]"
The only way i have been able to get around it is by changing the name of the dcim folder as i was unable to delete it.
note: i have also had various other problems with other apps. these apps had folders that were restored via the toolkit. in some cases all i had to do was rename the permission locked application folders. in other cases i had to rename their folder and create a new one with the original naming and sub folders

[Q] Unexplained Consumed Memory

I bought this Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 SM-T210R for my mom its currently running kitkat 4.4.2 non rooted which I am about to fix here soon.
The problem is my mom hardly does anything on this facebook some books recipes and maybe 1 or 2 games and her church stuff and for some ungodly reason it keeps telling her she has low memory around 775mb left and it wont install anything else.
I put a 16gig sd in it for her and moved everything possible over to the SD cleared all the cache from all apps and have gone to the extent of restoring it to factory and it still keeps doing the same thing.
My only thoughts are root it with custom recovery and wipe it that way and reinstall the firmware but that is a extreme I would only do in a worst case scenario.
If anyone has any idea's I would appreciate it this isnt my first rodeo with android devices I am not a complete novice I have rooted my phones in the past including my current galaxy s4 so I am open for any and all ideas.
Thanks,
West

Yea I am aware of that part my problem is I keep wiping the tablet and restoring to factory and within a couple hours it tells me it has full memory or low storage space again.
I went to the extent of deleting the non needed folders such as downloads images dcim etc and letting the system remake them assuming they were the culprits I also went into the Android\Obb
and also Android\Data and cleaned out the stuff that did not need to be there on my last factory restore.
And No matter what I do upon resetting back to factory the space gets consumed within a couple hours and that's only just browsing the web and clearing the cache when done.
W,
hi, if you have a large amount of pictures/video, it may be gallery
generating/regenerating thumbnails in /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails.
Check the size of that directory, if that's the case delete the directory and replace it
with a dummy file named .thumbnails an set it's permissions to read-only
i ask because if your moms got hymns etc. that are actually in an image format instead of text
those will have thumbnails, the same with some ebooks.
Replacing .thumbnails with a fake .thumbnails will only make gallery run a little slower.
Many apps do the same thing, generating images in hidden folders on your sdcard for caching ads etc.

android.process.media keeps stopping - so annoying

Dear all,
I have been using RMN5 for a while and this is the most f**cking annoying error in this phone (or MIUI's error - i got it in my LG F180L running MIUI7 a long time ago and it happened too)
Every time i connected the phone to PC, i got this problem, I've followed the tips on XDA about disable media storage and download (force stop only in RMN5) and reboot, ok it fixed for a while, but not for long, next time i connect, it happen AGAIN.
I'm so tired of this sh*t and want to get rid of it.
Please, somebody please show me the way.
Thank you
Don't disable those apps instead go to the app settings media storage and download and clear both cache and data, hopes this will solve the problem and move this post to question and answer thread. It belongs there.
you disabled critical system app and complained why you get error messages
This is the Android Media Scanner, looking for files to index on your storage.
Some options are:
Try creating a file called '.nomedia' in every folder, and the problem should dissapear. In that case you may have a corrupted file somewhere, so try to delete the .nomedia file in some of the suspected folders to see if the problem comes back (or google something like 'android.process.media .nomedia' for a better explanation or solution.
You can also enable debuggind (via developer options), to inspect the problem with adb logcat, or to install a logcat related app from Play Store, in case the dump that should appear at the time of the error contains some hint.

I'm having this issue after updating my Samsung GT-N8013 to lineageos 16.0. When you say to put a .nomedia file in every folder, do you litterally mean every single folder on both the tablet and sd card or a certain level of folder?

The .nomedia flag file will stop the scan in the directory it's placed and all of the directories contained in it.
I ended up reinstalling the the OS 16.0 rom for my Samsung N8013. It took a total of running the installation 3 times but it finally became stable.

Lost ALL images and videos - will rooting possibly save me?

Hey all,
as I was backing up files from my phone (internal storage full, 500MB to go) via USB, and after I'd done a bunch of PDFs and what not, I wanted to start moving videos / photos. That failed instantly and after that, EVERY SINGLE IMAGE / VIDEO file was gone from the phone. I installed three "recovery" apps - they couldn't find a thing. I have a bunch of family stuff I really, really would like to have back.
I downloaded the MIUI unlocking tool and wanted to 'get going' with rooting, but I'm getting a "Unlock will erase user data" notification, for if I continue. This does not seem what I want.
- Can I continue without definitely trashing any hope of recovering files?
- Is there another way to get to files that magically disappeared (no Sync on, no OneDrive auto-backup, no nothing at all) that do not required root, and/or ...
- Is this a "known" problem? I cannot seem to find anything.
Many, many, many thanks......
As MIUI Unlocking tool says, it will delete all the data on the phone.
Whelp, this is happening. I'll give it a go before I can't get the files...
I have to wait 2 weeks for the MIUI tool to allow unlocking the bootloader. So I guess at this point I'd mostly like to know if the Mysterious Case of the Disappearing Files is something that's more common on the Redmi Note 5 - or on Android 8.1 / MIUI? I'd like to assure the reader at this point that, while threads like these are a dime a dozen and it often boils down to user error, I'm not a complete nitwit and assure you I was doing nothing other than Ctrl-X -> Ctrl-V to harddrive, got an error message, 40GB were magically freed up on internal storage and ALL files were gone. All of it. Folders too.
Updating thread title, hope that's okay..
Realistically, considering different "undelete" / "recovery" apps are not finding ANYTHING!!! at all, how likely is it even that something will be found once the device has been rooted? This almost seems like it had a system reset while it was still enabled...... Just everything gone / re-encrypted / whatever. Is that even possible? Again, though, the device DID NOT reboot. The files were there......then 40GB was gone.
It is possible to recover the data but the process will require root permissions. Install Disk digger pro from playstore. And give root permissions it can easily recover the most of the photos ( May recover all but possibilities are less ) Give a try bro it will definitely help you. As it helped me before.
I had something similar back when I had Redmi Note 3. Files just disappeared when I put them inside obb folder. However, they reappeared when I entered the recovery (it was custom) and I copyed them via cable onto my pc. They weren't there when I connected normally turned on phone to the pc, and it was annoying. So whatever you are doing, don't format your phone, otherwise you'll lose the files forever.
If rooting and installing an app to recover the files won't help, I suggest you flashing twrp and trying to find them from there using the cable and a pc, or whatever.
Thanks. It's a shame I'm finally "getting in to" rooting only now, now that I have a problem. When I tried many years ago I felt it was too complicated and most of all risky....
The main problem I have with rooting is that the Mi Unlock Tool wishes to Reset the phone, re-encrypting it in the process, and destroying any hope of recovering data. I intend to flash OrangeFox before it can reset.... Does anyone have a better idea....? It's really very, very much appreciated!
