Question fastboot still works if recovery bad? - Sony Xperia 10 III

I plan on building AOSP following the Sony insctructions. If for some reason I flash a bad recovery can this phone still boot in fastboot mode with a broken recovery? I'm asking because recently I had a friend brick his Asus phone because you need to boot into recovery to be able to go to fastboot. I didn't expect that since on my Xiaomi you can go straight to fastboot without recovery..

fastboot is separate from recovery on this phone, yes.
Also, you can test the recovery first without flashing by using fastboot boot recovery.img, it boots into the recovery image without flashing it.

Only fastboot works on my zenfone.

Hi. I'm terribly lost.
I bought a ze500kl (z00ed) and played around with root, twrp and marshmallow. The last thing I did was installing marshmallow and then I wanted to flash twrp.
What I ended up with is a phone which you can't boot, you can't get into recovery and I'm not even able to flash any other recovery than the stock one. And even if I flash it 'successsuccessfully' I'm still not able to boot into it.
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
yields the phone starting back into fastboot mode.
As far as I understood my bootloader seems to be locked.
How can I get my phone working again?
The command fastboot reboot-bootloader only boots you into the bootloader, meaning to the fastboot. If you want to boot to recovery, you need to select this option in the fastboot menu. I don't remember if you can use a fastboot command for that, and I can't turn off my phone to check.
On the ze500kl, when phone off, press vol- and power to enter recovery.
some progress
Thanks for the info. I did already try to wrok with the vol- button but it just keeps showing the ASUS and android logos and doesn't start twrp. I've succeeded to install the system thanks to the following site: (I c'an't post it cuz I'm not here long enough) however now I'm again not getting into twrp.

If you haven't unlocked your bootloader then you can't flash TWRP. You need to unlock bootloader. I have the 551ML so can't help here. Try the search function and read...
Try to erase your cache partition in fastboot with the command "fastboot erase cache", this might get you booting back into Android but since you've been playing around without doing the necessary reading, no guarantees...
To get to recovery, stock or custom, you must go through fastboot or bootloader mode. You need to use the volume key until it says recovery then hit power key. It will reboot the phone and most probably show you a droid on its back with "Error" above it (if it's still stock). Hold down power and press volume up to enter recovery.

I did qutite some experimenting today. What I'm currently ended up with is:
1) I can boot into the system.
2) I can't boot into the recovery of the Phone
3) I can boot the StockRecovery via fastboot however I can't boot TWRP by any procedure (Although I was able to do so during my experimenting. I don't understand why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't)
4) My Phone is Rooted (at least it says so)
5) I have run the Unlock.Zip via TWRP when I had TWRP flashed however now I'm again at a point where I can't start TWRP at all.
I find this very confusing and I can't see any pattern to it. For now I'm OK with having a more or less functional phone but I'd like it to be more reliable and predictable in behaviour.
First of all you can't boot directly to recovery the way you are thinking. Booting into fastboot (actually called the bootloader) then selecting recovery is the normal way. You can't have 2 recoveries on your phone. So you probably did the tethered version of TWRP the first time. I don't have the link handy but you need to get the official TWRP and use fastboot to install.

You HAVEN'T UNLOCKED YOUR BOOTLOADER...
No recovery or custom rom will flash successfully... It will say it will, but you will either go into bootloop or just get stuck at ASUS logo...
Nothing will stick until the bootloader is unlocked, if you use tethered TWRP and flash a custom rom you will softbrick your phone until you flash a stock rom back on.
If you go ahead and flash TWRP onto your phone using fastboot then you will have NO recovery on your phone.
You have been warned...

Well I disagree and I think you are wrong . I strongly assume that I have TWRP installed as I'm able to boot into it without having the phone connected to the computer.
Consequently I HAVE unlocked my bootloader and I DO HAVE a recovery on my phone. And of course I'm not able to install a custom rom seing that there aren't any for my model yet.
I think however that I've (for now) [SOLVED] my problem and we're drifting away from the original topic. Thanks for your quick help :highfive:

Phone can boot into fastboot, and system but wont go into recovery

Hi guys i flashed the 3.5.3 CM today but i decided to go back with 3.26 again, so i followed a guide that tells me to install stock recovery over twrp before i install the rom but after i fastboot flash the recovery i cannot go into the recovery anymore.
i tried to flashed the modified twrp and then boot to recovery but still wont open it.
the phone works and can go into fastboot still but it just wont access recovery
anyway to fix it? sorry if this has been discussed before. im on a mac for more info
TIA
1+3
Is your OS booting?
yea
Got the same problem here. Can boot into system and fastboot but if boot to recovery i get the oneplus logo and the bootloaderscreen and then i get a black screen where i should get my recovery. And if wanna Force shutdown my oneplus it freezes somehow. I tried everything to fix this with no result. Stock recovery doesnt work too.
Hi I just had the same problem, I have sent it back to Oneplus for repair. According to the ticket, I had a faulty motherboard, which has been replaced. If you can, do it. I only had to wait for a week before it was sent back.
Had the same problem last night. Following method nr 2 in thos thread solved it.

Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using XDA-Developers mobile app
using fastboot to wipe the recovery partition then fastboot flashing modified twrp twice worked for me, i think the oneplus recovery image thats doing the rounds doesn't want to play nice lol
If youre phone boots in to system, download Flashify from play, flash recovery.img (you need to extract .img file). Go to recovery to check if it works. If not try other recovery.
after flashing the community build i cant boot my device in fastboot mode, it wont start the recovery or boot the system sucessfully.

If your device is unlocked, flash the recovery.img from fastboot.
You can download TWRP for oneplus 3 from their site.
Rename the downloaded recovery to recovery.img.
And open fastboot in the path of the recovery image.
Use the command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Hopefully this helps

managed to fix it the other day, by flashing the modded twrp.. somehow that one worked after that i flashed the 3.26 plus the 3.26 modem ones because if i didnt, my touch screen wont work...
For me, I flashed the twrp from fastboot.
But still the 1+ logo shows when I try to boot in to recovery for 5 sec and shuts down with 2 dots of lights in the navigation button area
The normal boot is working fine. Did flash the recovery using apps like TWRP Manager, Flashify etc. It will show successfulll. But when I try to boot in to recovery, same result.
Please help

TWRP - What am I doing wrong?

Hey guys and gals,
Silly question.
For a few months now, I've had TWRP 3.1.0 RC2 installed and no matter what I do, I absolutely cannot reboot into recovery. If I choose reboot to recovery while the phone is running, it results in a ramdump and eventually boots to system. If I reboot into the bootloader and choose to boot into recovery mode from there, it just boots to system. It's incredibly annoying. Literally the only time I can get into recovery is when I connect my phone to a computer and fastboot boot into a temporary TWRP Img and install TWRP again. Once I boot into system, I can never boot into recovery again. This is extremely inconvenient on the go, like right now, because I want to flash V4A before I start playing music from my Bluetooth speaker. Guess I'll just listen to low quality music :'(
What am I doing wrong? This is stupid.

I was on RC1 also
Anyone got some insight to this? Can't be that uncommon of a problem...
Try starting the process again.
Boot to bootloader
Fastboot boot 3.0.2 rc1
In twrp flash 3.1.0 r 2
Reboot recovery and check if it works

I never had TWRP stick unless I added another step to your instructions --boot completely into the rom once, go back into the bootloader, open temp TWRP and flash the TWRP zip again. If I didn't do this my recovery would always revert to stock but, strangely, even though I was running a custom rom the combination of the custom rom and stock recovery never bootlooped my phone and I was able to boot from the stock recovery to the custom rom with no problems. The only reason not being able to boot into TWRP was even an issue was that you can't flash any zips in recovery without it. Otherwise the phone ran so perfectly I didn't even realize at first that TWRP wasn't still the installed recovery.
Get the stock boot.img (this will remove root/kernel/twrp)
Boot into the bootloader
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot --set-active=a or b (switch to the inactive slot)
Fastboot reboot bootloader
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot --set-active=a or b (reload previous slot)
Fastboot reboot bootloader
Fastboot BOOT twrp.img
Flash TWRP in twrp..
If you can do that I would be interested in your results.
Also pointing out flashing rooms and certain zips here in the forums WILL revert you back to a stock recovery. Just my last bit of helpful information, hope someone gets it figured out, flashing is already a chore for those of us who like to experiment.

I was able to boot into recovery after doing this. Got a bootloop booting into system though, but flashing the ROM (and TWRP) fixed it.
Hello,
Try booting to TWRP 3.0.2 RC1 then flash TWRP 3.0.2 RC1 + SR1-SU v2.82SR1 + SU Pixel Fix (from Chains beta thread) one right after the other in the same TWRP session then reboot. Should fix your issue, give you recovery+root without ram dump.
Cheers
Everytime you flash a rom you need to flash twrp before rebooting or you'll lose twrp recovery.
Unfortunately I've had to get my Pixel XL replaced due to a defect and received a Verizon edition XL running 7.1.1. This is what I get for buying it from Best Buy Therefore I cannot unlock the bootloader and this problem no longer applies to me.
I'll keep this thread open for a bit in case it's useful for anyone else. I'll just sit here in all of my Stock-ness.
I couldn't get this to work. Tried flashing stock boot.img, then booting off of the TWRP images but I keep getting TWRP boot loop. Any suggestions? Tried flashing the entire stock image as well and no dice...

Redmi Note 5 Bootloop & Can't boot Recovery

Hello, need your help guys.
So my Whyred bootlooping now. What I did previously was wiping System, Cache, Dalvik & Data before flashing custom ROM -- I know, this shouldn't be an issue. But since I can do fastboot, I tried to flashes recovery. I tried a few (TWRP, RedWolf & Batik), for each the steps were all the same: Via fastboot flash the dummy image to manipulate ARB check, then flash Recovery and finish with boot into recovery.
The phone booting into recovery, I can see the screen of recoveries for few second, then phone bootlooping again.
What should I do?
And for additional information, my phone was unlocked bootloader -- it still unlocked because I can see the Unlocked sign on bootloop screen. I also tried to flash official MIUI rom via fastboot (whyred_global_images_V10.0.6.0.OEIMIFH_20181127) but it was failed because anti roll back -- I also don't understand this because the ARB was supposed not allowing me to downgrade, but why is it also not allowing me to flash the latest ROM too?
I am now stucked in bootloop -- still can do fastbooting, but really have no idea how to flash any rom and get into the system. Really need help help help please
Try this:
Code:
fastboot boot recoveryname.img
like fastboot boot RedWolf.img

Yes, for redwolf it was the command -- I was short typing but thats the idea.

Semi-bricked XA1, possible recovery?

So my phone has been lagging a whole lot using the stock rom and I have decided that I'll try a custom rom to see if that changes anything. So I came here and saw this forum:
I thought I'll try and so I unlocked my bootloader, only to have my phone be reset (not a problem, everything was backed up). It also boots with a warning "Device unlocked and can't be trusted".
Then I went on to download TWRP using this link in that post: "https://mega.nz/#!FQFXCYSY!DgxQRkaY1Eqq3B0fZLEQBNzUs0Zj80L6IzSHxdorQ3A" which is the TWRP 3.3.0.0 V2 IS FOR ALL USERS.
I didn't want to flash in the event it was the wrong recovery so I tried booting into it, fastboot boot recovery.img
It flashed, everything was ok and now the phone doesn't boot. It stayed in a boot loop. I went ahead and flashed recovery this time, no luck. Downloaded a recovery.img from another website and it didn't allow me to boot to android or recovery.
Is there a way to save my phone, I can't get another phone until August due to contract. It can still boot to fastboot and gets stuck when trying to boot to android. It being able to boot to fastboot makes me think theres a chance to flash a stock rom or any custom recovery and rom to get the phone working again. Any help? Thanks!

OK use the boot.img and recovery.img made by @janjan HERE. Under the heading ¨Downloads¨ see ¨Xperia XA1¨ and download the KERNEL + RECOVERY the boot.img and recovery.img are compatible with the G3121-G3112-G3125-G3116-G3123 devices on the applicable firmware.
Flash BOTH using fastboot. The boot.img is patched to allow TWRP to boot which it will never do using the stock boot.
If you wish to go back to stock then simply use FlashTool to flash the stock fotakernel.sin and boot.sin contained in the firmware for your device.
Does it works becouse I boot my g3116 from flashtool camand was
Fastboot boot boot.img and then also it's stuck into bootloader
