When I go into Accounts & Sync in the settings menu and try to add Facebook as an account, it doesn't work. I click to add facebook but it just returns me to the settings and never adds it. It works perfect for Twitter, LinkedIn, and other apps as well. Anyone else having this happen too? I've tried uninstalling and clearing all data, didn't work.

Same here. Don't think its setup for ICS yet
Facebook has not made an app that actually works with Android. Many companies, like HTC, have made apps for that by themselves. Facebook and Google are not on friendly terms when it comes to sharing contacts data, so this might not change anytime soon.
Doesn't that make the People Hub pointless then? All of my "real" friends are on Facebook, not Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn so it doesn't sync any real info or high def pictures.

It seems like they want everyone using Google+ Most of my personel friends are on Facebook also but, I hardly use Facebook. Hopefully they will fix it this for people who want to use it.

That's not entirely true. Facebook sync used to work with all Nexus devices but Google themselves pulled the sync due to them not allowing contacts to also be exported to Android devices. From Google:

They only stopped this feature on the Nexus line of phones and the reason Facebook sync still doesn't work is because Facebook has not made the necessary change yet that Twitter and the like have. Google however doesn't stop other OEMs from allowing Facebook to sync contacts though - I wish they would to light the fire under their ***** so I could get my contact photos back, but what can you do? They hate each other right now.

You could always start spamming Facebook to allow contact export so Google will let them sync again. I doubt they'll do it though.
The fact that any OEM can make this feature work again no matter what Google does kind of sucks when you only buy Nexus phones. I've gotten used to it not being there and I take a random candid picture of everyone I add to my contacts list now which works better in some situations since some of those FB profile pics don't give you any idea who the person actually is.

No they did not. The way Facebook synced before was a hack, they did not use Android contacts API the way others do and the way it is meant to. Google removed the hack.
Facebook does not want to share contact information with Android so that user 'owns' their data. They can always build their app the right way. Zuckerberg & Co just don't want to.

because it is called the People application, not the Facebook application.
Not everyone uses Facebook, as apathetically ubiquitous it may appear to be. Some people use Twitter. Some people use Google+. Either way, the point of it is that it links with multiple social networks. The Facebook application does not work properly with Android 4.0, and even if/when it does it is unlikely that Facebook will be allowed API access to the People application due to the fact that they do not make it simple to get at your contacts data. It's your prerogative if you want to blame Google or Facebook there, but the point I'm making is that the People application obviously has a point, since Facebook isn't the be-all-and-end-all of social networking.

Google cannot stop anyone from syncing and using the API, this is open software. Facebook simply does not wish to implement that feature, since all contact data synced is accessible by other applications. The other thing is that Facebook does not wish to share friends email addresses.
It is entirely about Facebook not allowing user to do whatever they want with data shared with them by friends.
Basically, Facebook is afraid that if they allow people to export contact data, it will be very easy for everyone to just move all their friends to a new social network. Since Facebook only has one way of making money it's understandable that they want to make it as hard for us as possible to do that.
From Google's point of view, it's very exploitative of Facebook to expect to get special treatment on Android phones even though they refuse to play ball with Google, hence why their special privilege has now been removed.
Whose ever fault you think this is, it's us consumers who are made to suffer. -.-

Not backed up to GMail but backed up to the phone. If you delete your FB account and I only had you as a FB contact then you would completely disappear from my contact list, or if something happened and FB went down for a few hours or a few days I wouldn't be able to contact anyone who was synced only through FB. Most people only join existing contacts so they only suffer from not having the photo and status updates synced, but not allowing export could be much more problematic. It's not that it's your property, it's information you have access to that you have been given approval by those you have friended to have therefore you could just use what FB gives you and manually enter the contact yourself if you wanted to. Google is basically saying if that's the case you should be given the option to automatically export that entire list to your phone instead of having to manually enter all the information that FB is supplying you with.
This frustrates me also.. ever since they updted my nexus s and removed it. Its the only thing i will miss from htc sense. I know use contapps to sync facebook and its associatd contact photos

No problem with linkedin and others. But when I try to add Facebook, I'm kicked back to the list of accounts.
Tried to reinstall facebooks, tried to clear the FB data ad cache. Even was not possible to add FB account after installing a stock 4.0.4 ROM from google (after full phone erase).

Facebook never made or modified an ICS version for there app. Consequently you cannot add account and phone will not sync. There are numerous fix solutions with root. My Gnex is not rooted so I simply use an app called SyncMyPix in Play Store. This app will at least sync you photos for contact purposes. Facebook just need to optimize for ICS and things will work better!

If you want a deeper integration on stock android like status updates in you "people" app you can get something like HaxSync (don't know if there is a better or free solution).
Hi, I wrote "Calendar Manager" to create new offline calendars on my device (Samsung i9000). Since custom ROMs like AOKP or CM don't ship with the "local/phone/offline" calendar, known from Samsung devices. Its free, no demo, no ads.
For anybody who wants their appointments or tasks safe on their's device, just download the apk, install (remember to allow 3rd party apps in your device settings), and create as many calendars as you wish.
The offline/local calendars integrates into the standard calendar module of Android, so you can use them with any calendar application, like the stock calendar viewer.
You can sync the calendar for example with MyPhoneExplorer to Outlook, Thunderbird/Lightning and other programs. But it will never be copied into the cloud.
Have fun with it. (Attached)

I was already doing some research on the Android contacts database. I have no clue why, but it works completely different than the calendar database and on top the documentation is very - lets say compact. Almost as if someone doesn't want you to create offline data storages...
Neverthelesse - will try to implement it in my (very little) spare time.

It was written to run on the custom roms like CM or AOKP which are base on Android 4.x, ICS, JB but don't ship with the local calendar. Samsung stock roms have the local "phone calendar" but CM does not, and they don't want to integrate it because they feel it doesn't make sense to not backup all your data to google. Well, I feel it makes sense to have my appointments stored locally only, so when I flashed AOKP I had to come up with a simple solution to lock Google out from my data.
(By the way I noticed, that Google syncs data from their calendar storage even if you switch syncing off. Weird isn't it?)

Really? Even if under settings you disable Sync feature it still syncs to Google Calendar is it?
I am surprised because ultimately I was going to use your app to get the Calendar DB started(if and when I get the latest Android phone running 4 or later) and sync stuff back and forth from the phone using MyPhoneExplorer. I do not want them synced anywhere. If an old Palm or for the matter the dated Windows Mobile can do it, I cannot fathom Google's reason for disallowing this feature.
Does anyone know if something similar is available fro pre ICS ROMs?
FYI, the people from MyPhoneExplorer may include offline calendar creation capabilities in their App in some future version. They intend to make it work on older systems, too.

I think the reason may be, that you disabled "calendar storage". This is an internal database in android, that holds all appointments from all calendars. So if it is disabled, no app can access any calendar. Google did really choose bad names for their apps and services. Here is my "Little Dictionary Of Confusing Google Identifiers and Explanations what they really mean" - that I wrote when figuring out what is NOT documented in the SDK (maybe intentionally, so that everybody just uses Google Calendar Sync...).
Google Calendar =
1) the google calendar web service
2) the google app that displays any calendar
3) the google calendar concept as a whole
Calendar Storage =
a relational database (guessing sqlite) that holds a table for all calendars and a table for all appointments. All calendars that want to use the Android calendar APIs and show the "system" calendars, must use it
Sync Provider =
a service in Android that syncs things from the phone to the cloud
Google Calendar Sync =
the sync provider service that moves appointments from Calendar Storage to Google Calendar (1) and vice versa
Local Calendar =
just a usual calendar in Calendar Storage. BUT it gets a a flag set, that it stays local. So none of all the Sync Providers has a chance to access that data.
Calendar Manager =
creates entry in calendars table in Calendar Storage with "local" bit set.

I just stumbled across CalendarSync which can create a local calendar in Gingerbread (and maybe older versions, too). I don't see any limitations in doing this through the "free" version on the dev's web page, and don't know or care what else it does. I intend to use the local calendar with MyPhoneExplorer.

I am a newB to android and smart phones. I enabled both calendar and calendar storage, and then tried your app to create an offline calendar, it did work perfectly fine. I have selected only the local calendar that i had created with your app to be 'calendar to display' options in the default calendar. Sorry to have bothered you with my lack of experience and knowledge. And thanks for your long and patient reply
Just a short update: I did some more programming and investigation regarding Google's spontaneous synchronizations. I can confirm that you pull the plug by disabling "Google Calendar Synchronization" and "Google Contacts Synchronization" services.

What about an offline contact app as well? You write on your homepage "The problem doesn’t arise when it comes to contacts management, since Android ships with a built-in local contacts account that you can use. On most devices it is simply called “Phone” and co-exists with the Google-account-contacts.".
I've just checked a an AOSP ROM (Slim Bean for the Galaxy S2). There is no option to add a phone account, just one or more google accounts. So, I'm not able to use local contacts.
If you could develop a similar contact storage, this would be awesome!

I just installed the KITKANG rom (cf. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549776) and a the first glance, it is pretty nice. But then I noticed a few things I really dislike such as
- The Web Browser does not reformat text (to make it fitting on the screen) if you zoom in manually by gesture. The browser I had on my previous image (caynogenmod 7) did this. And I don't want to miss that feature anymore.
- The contacts application seems to work by syncing contacts tothe Google cloud, only. My old contacts app had the choice to store contacts locally on the phone without Google sync.
I have no idea how to get this missing features back, again. Any comments / pointers?

It is dangerous to only store your contacts on the phone, because if you ever lose the phone, you lose all your contacts.

@ browser issue: I meanwhile learned that the issue cause by a change of the the rendering engine in Android to WebView. So, almost all browsers are affected by this. (For details, google "Text Reflow Removed From WebViews In KitKat, Probably Not Coming Back"). Opera is an exception, because it comes alone with its own machinery. However, I tried Opera and is is slow on my HTC Desire. As many, many other people complaining, I cannot understand why the Android development folks dropped such a fundamental feature. The Android Browser of Kitkat tends to be unusable now! And I consider a smartphone without a proper browser as unusable as well. Which at the end might prevent me from buying another Android smartphone...

I can see this descending quickly into a rather philosophical debate, but on the basis of your reasoning I wonder whether an Android smartphone is suitable for your needs in the first place. I didn't know your stance on personal data from your first post.
I agree with the text reflow browser, a really useful feature. Opera has it like you found out, though the Desire is just an old phone now which struggles to run it. Plenty of newer Android devices will run it just fine. The depth of the Play Store is such that you'll almost certainly find an alternative suitable for your requirements, so perhaps test and consider that for future smartphone purchases.
As for syncing with cloud services, it comes down to user trust and needs I guess. You're right you don't have to use Google, but an Android smartphone really does work best if you use their services.
No, I don't think that syncing of all my data is equivalent to syncing to Google, I use other other accounts too and don't sync everything. In my opinion I think it's possible to find a reasonable middle ground between paranoid tin hat and being ignorant about all personal data. For me, I disable all location tracking stuff and usage stats for any apps (not just Google ones), as I don't need them and feel uncomfortable sending this data. But I do sync other google services like Gmail / contacts because I find they work and are convenient for me. You believe it's evil, I believe it's useful and convenient, just a difference of opinion.
For your workaround, if you don't want to sync contacts, you could disable contact sync within the settings. Would be equivalent to local storage. Or install a different contacts app to manage and store contacts locally.
To avoid this philosophical debate, I'll try give a short answer.
I am using Android for about 5 years now. Without using Google cloud services. And have been a happy Android user. Sounds quite funny to me if someone wonders if Android would be the right thing for me.
Using cloud services is not really a matter of trust. I.e. I am not afraid that Google looks into single items and makes use out of it. Using cloud services is not really a matter of trust. I.e. I am not afraid that Google looks into single items and makes use out of it. You're revealing more about your preferences and Android experience to date with each post...it's not just me wondering whether Android is right for you, in your second post you said so yourself
Anyway each to their own.
Have you tried installing a completely separate contacts/dialer application? You could sideload or use a different app store to find one. A few I know of:
- Contacts+
- Ex dialer
- RocketDial
- Go contacts ex
I'm certain at least one of them will be able to create phone contacts only.
Don't know what I'm doing wrong, got Gmail, play store ,and all Google apps and they sync. When I downloaded Google contacts it tells me to sign in , when I try to it says already signed in but when I go to Google app everything shows as synced but there isn't even a contact icon showing up so what did I do wrong. Please help the mate 20x is awesome just can't get my Google contacts on.
Sorry, I can't help but can you tell me if you have the China or the International version?

Google contact sync is already baked in the rom. You probably need to do it all over again since the framework and sync adaptor probably got messed up.
If you have the china version,
factory reset the phone,
go into app gallery,
change country to China,
Search for Google Play Store
Google Play store will have an Update status, click it
After updated, click open and the usual setup will start
After that, you should have contact already synced.

No once i got google on it the chinese version is fine. Tons of bloatware but u can delete all of it. Doesnt allow a different app launcher from what i can tell but i just dragged and dropped all my apps so they were in order. Battery is insane

Perhaps try Twisted Home Manager app, some people have said that it could work.

No need to factory reset. All I did was install the Google Contact Sync v 9 from apkmirror then reisntalled the Contacts app... and voila!... it had the option to choose an account from the hamburger menu.

I did this and it worked perfectly without resetting anything!
Found an easy solution at 4pda to enable contact sync on Chinese Mate20x, without resetting your phone:
1) uninstall Play Store
2) download Play Store from apkmirror
3) install
4) sync will work right away
Hope this helps someone
