You'll have to wait, MIUI 12 will be rolling out to Redmi 7 in few weeks. Also, an update to Android 10 is on the way.

Can I use the roms for the 4G version with the 5G variant? Compatible? Only thing different is the cpu.

why would you try this? the 4g has more options for customs. no you can't mix and match any. 4g is one device, only 4g roms work for it. 5g is different roms, 5g NE is yet another version, not compatible with either.
any rom will verify the version before flashing, if you somehow force it to install you bootloop or brick.
4g = courbet
5g = renoir
5g NE = lisa
they were planning a 4g NE = mona - cancelled/not released yet
you can't swap roms from either. all different chips. (the only thing in common is the screen(s) - sortof, camera(s), battery and chassis.

I did not understand the question very well but if what you want to know is if the IMEI is deleted when installing a rom it is not deleted
I live in Turkey so imei is deleted. and I preferred it because it is not deleted in google pixel rom.
