Question Is there an easier way to update and keep root? - Google Pixel 6 Pro

The current method consistent of downloading the full ROM, extracting the zip, adding it to the android flash tool, editing the flash-all.bat (to avoid losing your data), further extracting the update to get the boot.img, then transfering the boot.img to the phone, patching it, then transfering on to your computer, then flashing the update followed by the boot.img.
Is there an easier way to do this? Does twrp exist for the P6P and would it prevent us from losing our data if we flashed the update? Probably a dumb thread, but the P6P apparently gets updated monthly/way too frequently. So I figured I'd ask. Thanks in advance.

There is a thread on Pixel 6 forum to use the OTA to update and keep root. Take a look at that.

No, not yet. I'm sure there'll be a thread in this section with "TWRP" in the title when there is, plus I'll update the OP of my thread (in my signature) with the information.
When/if TWRP exists at first it will be "unofficial" versions, but once it's official, they'll probably be available at https://twrp.me/google/googlepixel6.html and https://twrp.me/google/googlepixel6pro.html, but just guessing what the URLs will be based on previous releases.

If you didn't know - all Pixels get updated monthly. Some other phones, also. Most of the time, folks' complaints are that their phones aren't updated frequently enough.

April Security Update - Two Versions? April 1st vs. April 5th

Many users reported TWO different variants of the April Security Update. One which is labeled April 1st and another April 5th. I am confused by this as well, I want to get all the hotfixes but my build does not match Google's OTA page.
I'm using a Pixel XL 2 and I have April 1st version on TELUS network. I got it yesterday night, the download was 46.6 MB My build number is OPM4.171019.015.A1 BUT per Google official OTA website it says I should have 8.1.0 (OPM2.171019.029, Apr 2018)
Can anyone shed some light on these TWO variants? Many Rogers users got April 1st but a few got April 5th. Bell seems to be all on April 5th. Telus/Koodo seems to be a mixed bag also.
The one you're referring to on the Factory Images page is the stock release for non-carrier Pixel 2s.
Sometimes carrier branded releases come out the same time, but usually they're released after. Carrier branded releases will have different version numbers, as you can see in the previous release history.

That still doesn't explain why I got April 1st variant. I don't even know if I got the new hotfixes.
Even Google were surprised to hear that. They told me that eventually. The update is pushed through anyways from Google channels. They escalated the issue.

BUT for the Pixel security update. That means im missing on all the bugfixes if I understood correctly... It says here that all the hotfixes are included in. The 2018-04-05 version.
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/pixel/2018-04-01
The April 5 release contains all of the security patches and bug fixes plus the current updates for Pixel 2, Pixel, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Pixel C. The April 1 release allows OEMs to apply specific patches to correct problems found with AOSP. This has always been the case and I can remember only one time I only had the 1st patch to apply to my Nexus.

So what would explain I have only received the April 1st update ? Is it possible to have two updates in one month? I never noticed that.
This is the first time I get the 1st patch too. I'm not the only one
I was able to update to the 4/5 patch at 8PM, 4/4. I'm on the Pixel 2 XL. Which model do you have? Have you done anything to the stock software?
Pixel 2 XL 64GB Stock OS.
I used the Beta Enrollment in the past, but this is a fresh phone from RMA.

You don't have to uninstall magisk to update your factory image. Have you also unlocked the _critical partition with "fastboot flashing unlock_critical"?? This WILL wipe your phone if you haven't!!
What type of pc are you using?? Laptops have been know to have difficulties with this due to improper USB cables. The pic is the procedure I use each mont to update the stock OS without wiping data :good:

Anyone get Official Android 10 yet? Sound off here!

Anyone get the final official build of Android Q? Today, supposedly, is the day for the update to begin rolling out. Post here with your results!
Status: Running 10 now!
It's too early, its 7:40am in California now, I wouldn't expect it before 5pm...
If the update is released today, it is typically done between 9am and noon Pacific Time... I usually get it around 11am Central Time. That said, this is the "Monday" after a holiday in the US, so it could potentially be later in the day.
We will usually see the factory images appear first, and OTA updates available anywhere from a few minutes to as much as a few days later...
I take all this news of the update coming today with a grain of salt. Keep an eye on the Android Developer blog for more information: https://android-developers.googleblog.com

Full and ota images are posted on Android developers site, so ota should be there pretty soon...
Android images are available now, expect OTA's to happen soon... The full release announcement is available at https://android-developers.googleblog.com/

There are two Android 10 OTA files for the Pixel 3A XL. One ends in 19 and the other 20. How do you determine which one to download? Does it matter?

As there is only one hardware platform, you would want to use the latest one, in this case 20... Remember to use the OTA image though and not the "factory" one. The factory one will wipe your device clean, the OTA image will not.
OTA images are available here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota
Make sure you understand how they are installed using 'adb sideload' method.
FYI... If you chose to update via the OTA file using 'adb sideload' the first boot takes about 10 minutes. Don't panic and just let it do it's thing. Even once it's "up and working" it still takes a while, be patient. Several other things will be updated as well, like Play Store libraries. I also had several app updates available after the upgrade.
Whole process start to finish after downloading the OTA zip file was about 20 minutes.

Thanks again acejavelin for all the info. I have been flashing the OTA security updates for some time now. I'd rather sideload then have to wait for OTA. I noticed two files sometimes in the past with my Nexus phones. All the monthly security patches for the pixel 3a xl so far have just one download file. I was just wondering why Google would upload two?

OTA from Beta 6 is only 40.7MB. Guess there weren't many changes from the beta.
Anyone get the live caption feature working? I'm trying to figure out how to get it working
Do we have to be on the Magisk Canary channel to patch the boot.img file to retain root or is the Stable Channel good for Android 10?
Thanks
Pretty sure TWRP still isnt working on Android 10 so patched boot is the way to go. I suppose you could try sideloading magisk zip as well but I just used the patched boot option and it worked perfectly.

Question Unable to update after rooting phone

Hello,
I received my oneplus 9 pro (global) the other day, and it's been working great. I rooted it no problem with a boot image I found on xda, and patched it using magisk manager. However, whenever I try to download the newest update, it fails every time. The first time it says that it's paused, and that it will continue whenever you press resume. I press resume, and then it says a problem occurred.
I tried to delete the .OTA folder, but it's no where to be found. I also tried to factory reset, as well as flashing the unpatched boot image, but it did not work.
Here's the link as to where I found the global boot image

As far as I know, you can't take an OTA (incremental update) with either an unlocked bootloader or root. Not sure which of these is the actual culprit. I'm on the Global version (AA) and just flashed the full BA update. All is working well, only downside is that Dolby Atmos doesn't have the equalizer on the EU (BA) version. Everything else including 5G is working as it should, just like on previous versions of the OnePlus devices I've had (3T, 5, 6T, 7Pro and 8Pro).

I'm from the US, so I don't know if the network band will be the same, if so as good on the BA version.
If anything, i'll just wait for the official Global release on their website. It's just infuriating to see something that annoys me get fixed, such as the white navigation bar in split screen, and not being able to update.

You may not want to hold your breath on that one. For whatever reason, oneplus does not release full OTA zips for AA half the time. (WTF ONEPLUS). Because of this, I long since started flashing BA over my global phone. As the gentleman said up above, it works absolutely perfectly.

can I just flash the BA version on top of my current rom (AA) and not lose anything? I just got done reinstalling everything, and it was a pain. I don't want to do this a 3rd time, if I can avoid it.
I never had any issues with rooting/being unlocked and updating on my previous OnePlus phones... this is a new one for me.
On 8t I had to use EU..google is who releases OTAs for all variants except EU, which is still directly from oneplus. Rooting broke OTAs for me as well on any other rom besides EU...also I have 9pro, which I local updated to EU zip b4 flashing magisk_boot.img and I already received new update since rooting and all is good.
I just flashed BA on top on my current rom via system update (you have to click the cog wheel top right and put the OTA zip on your root directory)
Nothing changed and the navigation bar in split screen is indeed fixed, meaning this is the latest version.
Thanks again for letting me know about this!

I'd be careful about flashing an international build for a global variant as EU regulations could be stricter, and most times are, with respect to signal strength, emissions, and other factors. Might work fine now, but there are different variants for a reason and one specific to the EU for a reason (laws are vastly different).

To unroot, go into magisk and click uninstall. Do know that I have tried this already and system update still won't go through. It appears it's being picky about the bootloader being unlocked I think. This is weird because on my OnePlus 7 pro, I did not have this issue and all I had to do was go to Magisk, uninstall ---> restore images, then do the OTA, and then have Magisk install to second slot, and then I would go back to system update, allow it to reboot, and I would still be rooted.

geez, I hope we don't have to relock and unlock for every update. I guess for the time being, there's no reason to be unlocked, but when custom ROM's start rolling out, that's going to be a major headache. I wonder if/when the updates are posted on One Plus website, will the updates work, or will root/unlock still prevent it?
I really want that update as I'm reading it made the battery much better. What to do!
I'm curious. so for a brand new phone why are you guys rooting it? It is not loaded with bloat ware (at least as much as samsung fpr example.) there are no custom roms yet, and oneplus is pushing updates to fix bugs. I think I'll wait till custom roms show up and then consider rooting.

Question Should I upgrade before rooting my Pixel 6 Pro?

Hey, I'm on 210817.036 (Nov. 2021) on an unlocked Pixel 6 Pro.
I was finally able to unlock it today from AT&T and wondering if I should update to the latest Android update before rooting.
Thanks for any advice!
I wouldn't bother, because OTAs take longer than flashing full firmware. i.e. As part of the rooting process, I would go ahead and flash the latest full firmware instead.
SDK Platform Tools
Get the Google USB Driver
Official Google Android Flash Tool
Oh OK! I didn't realize I could flash the full image of a higher version directly over an older version as part of this process. Thank you!
Oh and also I didn't know if patches above Nov. 2021 made things worse or not.

You're welcome!
I never had any issues at all, even with the fingerprint reader, from the end of October when I received mine through the second February patch. Hopefully, yours will be the same way.
At worst, once you unlock the bootloader if you have any issues with how things run, you can always flash any firmware you like. Be careful. You can also accidentally flash the wrong firmware. Coincidentally, I accidentally gave you a link to the official flashing site, which is good for staying stock unrooted, but if you're going to be rooted, I actually recommend the Pixel 6 Pro Factory Images. Just only ever use images that have Raven in the name as flashing the wrong thing can make it so that your phone would be unrecoverable.
Forgive me if I'm repeating anything you already know.
