Internal Storage limit? what's your maximum? (sorry, there's not enough space...)

Question:
Has anyone with an Incredible (or htc device?) ever gotten close to filling up the 748mb's of phone memory? What's your maximum?
I know there's a weird storage notification that comes up w/ the Incredible, and correct me if I'm wrong, no one TRULY knows why it happens, right?
So I'm trying to install the MiniSquadron Special Edition. I get this message: "Sorry, there's not enough space to install this item."
I have 487MB available space free in my 748mb's of phone memory.
Why can't I install this item? I am NOT getting the "Low SPace" or "low storage" warnings on my phone currently.
HTC recommends a hard reset. Took it to Verizon today, the tech told me the same thing. Said it *might* fix things. I actually had to teach him that the 748 mb phone memory was not RAM, but what the phone allocates for apps.
Do I have to hard reset? Any solutions? I have a suspicion that if I DO do a hard reset, and reinstall the exact same things on my phone... the same thing will happen.
So, I reiterate my original question:
Has anyone with an Incredible (or htc device?) ever gotten close to filling up the 748mb's of phone memory? What's your maximum?
Or does everyone get this problem, and there's really only 300mb of storage?
*and to top things off my phone randomly vibrates when the screen's on.

Yes. A lot of people know why this happens. Data for user apps is stored in folder /data/data. This folder is limited to 150 mb. If you get down to less than 15 mb available the warning message starts appearing.
As far as I know, nobody has found a way to expand this limit. Apps that can use up a lot of that space are google earth and saving a lot of emails or text messages. If you're rooted you can use root explorer to look at this folder to see how much space you have available. Only solution is to cleanup old texts and emails or uninstall apps.

oh, so the low storage warning comes from the DATA that apps use, not the apps themselves.
i'll just be diligent in trying to clear out my emails and texts.
do you know why i am getting no low storage warning, but it still tells me that "sorry, there's not enough space to install this item?"
or is it the same thing?

On the market it shows minisquadron special edition at 23mb. I don't know if that means app size only, or app plus data. But I assume since you're receiving that message, there's not enough room in /data/data to install the app.

I'm not sure how the developer that started the thread I'm going to post a link to here feels about me pointing people to his thread, but I think this person has made a good attack on the /data/data problem.
It's worth looking over. I'm a beta-tester for his app, and it's saved me > 50% of the space I was wasting in /data/data. I'm using the linked loop filesystem on the /sdcard approach mentioned in that thread. Google Earth alone was taking 50% of my usage (30M), now is taking ~< 1M).

If you're referring to the notenoughspace app linked above, it doesn't clear your data. It instead allows you to move selected application subfolders to the sdcard, which frees up space in the /data/data folder.
You can clear data for user installed apps thru Settings> Manage Applications. But don't think I'd try that for facebook. Clearing cache is a safer option.
Data for an app is all the information an app needs to run. If you clear data, the next time you start the app it will be like a fresh install and all the required data will just be recreated anyway.

I think, for me, that ~750M of memory (and I mean memory for applications) is fine. I haven't yet gotten more than 200M of that in use and doubt I will.
The more important figure isn't memory (DRAM/App Memory), it is what we were talking about above. It's the size of the separately mounted /data/data partition which is, I think, only about ~160M. Even on my relatively sparsely populated Inc, that partition was nearly full. Google Earth uses 30M in just libs there.
That's what NES, the app above, addresses, so there is a way out, especially now that the dev has allowed usage of a loop partition in the /mnt/emmc partition. That allows the /sdcard to still mount with a USB cable without any contention.
Anyway, the thing that made the Droid 1 so slow and easily bogged down was a lack of actual memory (250M if I recall), and the Inc doesn't have that problem a bit. The Droid 1 I had was overclocked to 1.1Ghz but was very slow by comparison to the Dinc. and I think that's all due to the amount of physical memory.

well, the struggle for memory continues...
what would happen if i cleared the data for the facebook app?
it's over 32mb big.
i dont want it to erase all the contacts pics i have set up, although, is that facebook for htc sense? different?
on a side note, i notice that if i periodically clear dialer storage, aka text messages, that helps w/ the warning.

If you are rooted you should be able to move the app to your SD card? Or am I wrong? I use root explorer and I can move any app I download to the SD card.

Rigman: I never saw this, but was under the impression that cache under the incredible was kept in two categories, one at a system level in /cache which is ~193M and the other at the app level which /data/data/{app}/cache covers. (which is helped by NES}.
So I'm thinking that based on your response, you know that this person's problems with data space are in the system /cache? I was just curious how you knew that. I'm also curious if that problem has been as big a one in general as the /data/data problem which I hear about a lot.
Maybe it can be tackled in some similar fashion by another NES type (or the same one) app.

couldn't a soft link from /data/data to a file or directory in the ext3 work
to expand /data/data expanding the space? I guess as long the app opening
space didn't need it until after the sd card is available. Not sure how to
mount the ext3 part tho .... does Android have an equivilent to
/etc/rc.d/rc.local in BSD to issue the mount? or /etc/fstab (with a way to delay
until the right time in boot up)? Will power button power down unmount it?

Yeah, but that is basically how NES works (in my first post in this thread). It creates a loop partition on the /sdcard or /emmc partition, and inside the loop partition is an ext3/4 FS. This was it just appears as a single file, not a filesystem, and can go onto a fat32 formatted 'drive'. That stuff all works fine. There is a mount/dismount ability from either the app or term emulator.
The drift I'm getting here is that this thread isn't all about /data/data. Do you know if that's the case? I guess there is also the old /cache partition and thought I've not experienced it, it probably can also fill up.
I don't know why something similar to the above couldn't be tried on the /cache partition but this possibly gets into a messier world where you have to get in at init.d time and force a different sort of mount to /cache to open it up a bit. It depends on what sort of structure the fs has inside /cache. (and if that's a problem).

Wow, you guys are good! Question is, is there anything I can do? Is this a google problem, or htc problem? Does this internal memory problem happen on motorola droids?
also, why does this problem still exist? Does google not know or not care?
On a side note, maybe you guys can help. When I hold down the search button to start google voice search, and speak something like " call mcdonalds, " it will try to call mcdonalds, and get the phone number correct EXCEPT for adding a " +1" before the number, which means it won't dial. Htc doesn't know what to do except NOT use this function, but to use vlingo. also, my google voice had some numbers show up with a" +1" . It's weird.
I think it's a htc sense problem, cuz non htc phones doesn't have this problem. Also, rooted users don't have this problem either.
Any suggestions? Would a hard reset help?

I have a droid and took a look. It appears to be a Google thing, not an HTC one since my droid has ~95M of /cache and a similar amount for /data/data. It also has much less DRAM and without using the SD card for apps (apps2SD) has more problems than this. (mostly manifested by poor speed regardless of overclock,etc)
Why exist? Take a look at the google bug base, and well, you'll see how many problems exist It's probably low on the list of things to do.
The other bit of this is that flash , although finite, could potentially be arranged in anyway via design. They could have given us more /system, more /data/data, more /cache, but for some reason these are the choices they made. The thing that maybe is unique to the Inc and I'm not sure of this is /mnt/emmc, which isn't hardly used for much of anything, so there was more room available for the MTDBlock{devs} to be used in other ways.
Sorry -- I'm out of answers I'm hoping they do a better job say, in gingerbread, or whatever the lastest bit of 'hot peanut fudge ice cream' OS upgrade that is next on the list. If there is any hardware related restriction (that I can't see right now), then hopefully the fact that our Dinc's are somewhat done for generation-ally will mean that the next HTC's , Motorola's will do a better job from the HW standpoint as well.

i had to clear my sd card, so i moved all of the apps that were on there back onto my phone. i have taken up 500 some MB of space on my phone now, with about 200MB left.
VERY interesting. i know that the low space warning doesn't really have anything to do w/ the storage, but the app storage, i just never thought i'd see that much on my phone w/o getting the low space warning.
and i have NOT gotten the low space warning, too, btw.
and i'm willing to bet if i downloaded those apps instead of retransferring them back on my phone, i'd get that low space warning...

[Q] Phone Freezing Over Night

Apologies if this has been posted before, I did look but couldn't seem to find the exact same issue.
I've had my phone for just under a year, no real problems. But late last month it restarted over night and since then it started freezing every night when I left it charging. At first I thought it was crashing but the charge light would still be on but all buttons would be unresponsive. The only thing I could do to regain control of my phone was to remove the battery.
I contacted HTC who suggested factory reset...which I don't really want to do. As my phone was only freezing once a day (over night) it wasn't all that bad. To be honest I thought it was an issue with it charging.
For reasons I can't remember, I removed an app that I never used; it was using 2mb space and couldn't be put on the SD. Once removed, the freezing stopped happening and there was much rejoicing...until last night.
I decided to download another app and the freezing happened again over night. I've since removed that app but here's the rub, why is this happening?
The fact it's happening whenever I download more apps to my phone seems to point to a memory issue but my phone has 1.6GB on the SD and 53mb on the phone itself.
I still haven't tried a factory reset and as I've had it less than a year, HTC said I can return it; but there's no guarantee this will fix it and I like my little phone, so if there's a way I can resolve this issue I'll rather do that before trying more drastic measures.
I hope someone can help.

Are you rooted? If that's the case, and, you are charging the phone when it is switched off, what you are experiencing is a known bug.
Also, although unrelated, it is really not recommended to charge your battery overnight or for extended periods. Charge only till it is full.

Nope, not rooted. Just a plain, bog-standard out the box Wildfire.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the charging though Since I bought it (July last year) I had been charging over night on most days but I'll switch to just charging it for a few hours till it's full now.
I guess in case it'll help I'll give a little more info: While charging I leave my phone switched on and I rarely restart my phone unless it drops signal. Only recently with the freezing have I had issues with using it and had to restart it frequently. I'm not a techie person so I've not played around with the phone other than putting on apps, where possible I put them onto SD. My phone is unlocked and I use it on the O2 network.

make a factory reset bro. it tells u whether the issue is with hardware or software. kept under charging mode just heats up the phone by a little level. this dont normally freeze the phone.
but if u r downloading something with data connection, or bluetooth, or wifi and kept charging overnight, then the battery gets overheated heavily which freezes the phone. it is quite normal and is experienced by people who keep overnight downloads.
and further there may be application conflicts in ur phone, which make it slow and freeze. i expect this is the issue with u.
if u r sure that u r not using any data connections, then i suggest u to factory reset ur phone. before that backup all the data. i dont understand what makes u from not doing the factory reset.

Over night my phone is idle while charging. Though I have data enabled (no wifi at home), it's not downloading anything and I have auto sync switched off.
I would have thought if this was an application issue it would have started after installing this dodgy app and also continue until I unistalled. This hasn't been the case. When it started happening I hadn't installed anything other than updates for weeks or maybe months. During the week while it was having this issue, I had installed 1 app (Photoshop).
It has only frozen once during the day, right after work; that was the time I finally thought I'll have to factory reset. So I was writing down all my apps in a notepad so I knew what I had and where they were (I'm fussy with my screen setup). I decided to remove 2 apps I never used (8Pen and Photoshop), I thought I'll leave it 1 night just in case and that night though it never froze, so I didn't reset.
Since then it's been working fine for 3 weeks till last night when I downloaded another app. So it seems random, it's not associated with a particular app and comes and goes.
The reason I'm cautious about factory resetting is that it deletes everything. Though I have backed contacts up to MyLookOut and to my SD card, I'll still loose my apps and data and so I'm not keen on doing it. Not using wifi means it's heafty on my 500mb data package to redownload them again and then I'm unsure if i'll have to upgrade to Froyo again.
End of the day it just seems like a "Turn it off and on again" answer and as it comes and goes and doesn't seem to have a reason why it happens so randomly I don't want to factory reset if there's another way.

u r worrying about loosing data on factory reset. but do u know that u can backup each and everything on the phone including the apps downloaded from market.
ok, i will try to give a software solution. first uninstall all the file managers and app managers in your phone. then go to market and download "ANDROID ASSISTANT". this little app has many features. explore it and u will know its potential. it has a nice option called QUICK BOOST. when u press this quick boost on a heavily stuck phone, u will feel like ur phone got a new life. it makes the phone response faster in seconds.
and further it has auto boost option, which can be set to a minimum of 10minutes. this auto boost will help u in preventing the freeze issue. hope it works. the present version of android assistant is 2.3.3

How do you backup apps? I know they'll appear in the download list but I'll rather not have to redownload them all, plus I have a few not from the marketplace. I've read that during a factory reset even apps which are apparently "saved" on the SD card are removed because they're not 100% saved onto it. So if you know of a way to back them up I would be most grateful.
Thanks for the Android Assistant.apk too, I'll be sure to look into that! Though I always thought anything that force closed apps wasn't always good - I previously used Task Killer and removed it after being told it could be the route of a force close email app issue I was getting.

So my previous thought that this was some how connected to storage on my phone must be wrong. So what on Earth can it be? yes freezing also happens when there is very low phone free memory. when ur apps get filled in phone and keep on decreasing its memory, it is more likely that ur phone gets freezed. its always better to keep a 30MB free phone memory. remember data and cache also use phone memory, so the free memory will be generally unpredictable with minor errors. have u got any idea of a windows pc freezing. a windows pc freezes if there is some errors in registry. that is the reason why i have suggested u to make factory reset first to eliminate the software issues.
u asked me a solution to backup ur apps, right.
firstly i wanna introduce u about the backing up of applications.
android applications will be in the .apk file format and u know this. this .apk file is an installable archive just like .exe of windows OS. opening the .apk files from a file manager installs the program files of that application. but when u download the applications from android market, u will not get the .apk files. the android market installs the program files directly. but we can still create an .apk file from these program files and app managers will do that function. both the files im attaching u below will do that function.
here im attaching u two applications (.apk files)
one is APP CONTROL. i recommend u to use this. it can be used with android assistant installed. both of them work fine. the APP CONTROL version i gave u is an older version and is a full version. A newer version of APP CONTROL is available in the android market, but it is not free. so i strongly recommend u to use this. it has a great feature to backup all ur apps at a single click. the apps backed up by it will be saved as .apk files under the path
MEMORY CARD/backups/apps
i recommend u to back up all ur phone and mem card apps at a time with a single click. explore this APP CONTROL.
i dont want to give a detailed explanation of the other file ANDROID APP MANAGER, because i wont recommend u to use this. im just attaching u this because of only one reason, that APP CONTROL is presently not a full version. using of it is entirely at your personal intrest.

I took your advice and did a factory reset - backed everything up so it wasn't as painful as I first thought it would be. Managed to reinstall everything and so far so good (touch wood) but the original issue was sporadic and so only time will tell.
I have noticed since the reset that my phone memory, which was 50mb before, is now 100mb. So hopefully this will mean that I'm not forced to limit what I download.
Such a shame the Wildfire doesn't have more memory

that 50 MB and 100 MB may be due to app memory + cache memory. if u have interrupted the download android apps from market, and have every downloading app partly downloaded and interrupted. then that partly downloaded apps go to the cache memory of MARKET application. u can try and check this.
similarly there will be cache memory for every application. i expect all those cache memories got built up and ate 50 MB of ur phone memory. if it is so, it says that how vigourously u have used ur phone regarding applications.
these cache memories wont get cleaned just on restrating phone, and u should manually clean them either through the phones inbuilt process or through the applications having keywords of cache cleaner.
there is somewhat that i dont like in android apps. which is the application doing extra functions other than its name. now a days, u can see many file managers in android market. and those file managers suppose to have the fuction of explorer of android file system. but they will have additional features like combined app manager, cache cleaner, uninstaller, installer.
this makes the different applications conflict with each other and slow down the os. thats the thing i hate here. i have to choose priority in apps, and sometimes need to avoid nice apps due to that reason.

Well, my phone has just froze again Sent an email to HTC (already had an email chain going with them so I just updated my ticket) and asked them what to try next.
On the plus side at least they won't keep telling me to factory reset!

HOPE U HAVE ELIMINATED THE SOFTWARE ISSUE
OK. hope the phone froze without even single app being installed.
suppose if the freeze was a software issue, then u have backed up the app causing freeze. let us think this like a virus. if u had reinstalled that app again, ur phone is likely to freeze again.
i haven't heard of virusses if android os, but i have seen many antivirus programs for android. even the great kaspersky recently added its support for android. the existance of antivirus programs proove the existance of virusses.
so, try to remember if u have installed any backed up app frm mem card.
Im personally guessing that ur phone freeze was not a software issue. ur phone might be having hardware issues.
giving to a service centre might solve the problem, but im not pretty sure. and moreover, if they update ur phone to froyo, u cant even root. (i dont remember what ur phone is on now). and even u cant make those service centre guys see ur problem, as u dont know when it freezes. i expect, what all they are gonna do to ur phone is factory reset, or reinstall the os.

One X. Is your data secure?

All my previous phones have had removeable storage by way of an SD or MicroSD card.
This means that when my phone develops a bad fault and needs to go back to the suppliers for repair, I can simply remove the data card, and all my personal data, medical records, business critical data, etc are safely kept at my place, and not exposed to some little eejit at the repair shop.
With the One X, the data is stored on 'internal' storage, and cannot be removed. What happens when a fault means I cannot boot the phone and delete the sensitive data?
There are unconfirmed suggestions that the internal storage is Linux EXT4. Is the user data encrypted on this device based on user security password, rendering it not available to prying eyes, and only available to the designated user.
Or did no-one at HTC bother thinking about this?
Could be a show stopper for many corporates, and individuals.

I've just had a look at the settings and there's an option for internal storage encryption which requires a pin to be entered each time the device is powered on.

Obviously this is a useful option, but it does warn that there is no unencrypt option, apart from to factory reset the phone and install everything again.
Having just installed everything nicely on my phone, I think I will skip this option for now in case it causes any performance hit on the phone. I will test it one day when I need to rebuild anyway.

tbh if you are sending a phone in for repair I'd advise a factory reset regardless of whether you've got a removal sd card. Not everything gets stored on the sd card.

How you gonna do this factory reset on your phone which will no longer start up at all, even into recovery mode, which was my initial premise for sending it back to repair?

I would keep all personal data in Dropbox, then unlink the device through Dropbox website if the phone will not boot and you need to send it back for repair.
Google doc, vpn are another possible solutions.

As it happens my One X developed an intermittent screen fault (looked like a VRAM corruption problem) so I have just had the unit swapped.
So while I have a new machine which has not been set up yet, I took the opportunity to do the data storage tests I suggested yesterday. Here are my findings.
Using a data set of 93 files, 5 folders 2.67GB mix of tiny (5KB), medium (8Mb) and large files (2GB), I performed timed copies to/from the internal phone storage, with the storage in standard FAT32 format and secondly in encrypted FAT32 format. Here are the timings:
Copy to Fat32 5:36 (Mins:secs)
Copy from Fat32 2:48
Copy to encrypted 5:19 5% gain
Copy from encrypted 2:32 10% gain
So the interesting thing is that the encrypted storage performs better. Possibly the encrypted data is compressed somewhat, so there is a speed gain as less data needs to be written to flash storage.
But maybe it also causes a battery hit as more work has to be done encrypting/decrypting the data all the time. I have not been able to test this last suggestion.
Note that encrytped format is still FAT32 and therefore still will not accept files greater than 4GB in size.
One drawback to running encryted is that you are forced to enter a pin or password at each unlock. You cannot turn that off with encryption enabled.

I tested the performance with encryption on when I first got mine. I used encryption on both the user and system partitions. Performance was fine, except for the camera.
If I took a photo, then went to gallery from the camera app, then came back, everything would be unresponsive (no menu, no recent apps, could not take photos). All I could do was push and hold the power button to restart.
Something obviously went a bit screwy. I don't know if anyone else has experienced similar behaviour, but I would recommend doing a full backup before trying encryption just in case. Once I'd restored to my (non-encrypted) backup the camera was fine again.

i have exactly the same problem with the camera. Encrypting the internal storage (the 2GB partiton) is no problem, but as soon as you encrypt the phone storage (25GB or something) the camera app will crash...

Internal storage issue

I seem to have an issue with my internal storage in the Settings app. When I select Storage to display how much I have used it showed 277 mb used in Pictures,videos. I had about 16 pictures/videos in there, along with a bunch of "empty" places. I deleted those empty places and cleared the cache, no difference. I checked the gallery and it showed the same pictures, along with videos from a couple of games, and one game I had uninstalled, Shadowgun. There were two videos and two "empty" videos for Shadowgun. I deleted these four, and instead of going down the amount of space used for Pictures, videos actually went up to 410 mb used. One more thing on these videos, the two were the same, except that one had a path listed under details and the other one did not. All four were the same size, about 30 mb. Any ideas?

You could try using SD Maid to help you out. Sometimes thumbnails generated by the gallery result in huge (300+ mb) sizes (SD Maid could get rid of them and additional unneeded files for you).

I'm also having problems with internal storage, I'm getting low space warnings with almost nothing installed. I reloaded from stock image and after reinstalling my apps it said I was only using 1gb, my tablet is used as a car stereo so no photos are taken and all media is on the sd card but now 3 days later it says I am using 4gb of internal storage without adding any new apps or adding anything to the tablet also I am noticing my tablet lag horribly sometimes when coming out of sleep. any help would be appreciated

Since you have it in your car, I'm guessing your using GPS nav?
There seems to be a bug with the GPS caching. Check the data/GPS folder for a ton of dated txt files (something like gl-2012-07-01-9573859.txt). And delete them. That folder can grow to a few gb of space of not cleared.
You will have to be rooted to see and mod the GPS folder. Your only other option if you not rooted is to factory reset.

Its good to know whats causing it I will probably stray away from using the gps as much.
I'm not rooted and probably wont root as I am only weeks away from swapping out the acer a100 for a nexus 7. I already have a buyer lined up for my a100 and don't want to risk anything before the sale

And 60 gb is used by "other apps".
No matter what storage analyser I tried, I can't find where is that 60gb
It doesn't appear in nowhere.

Gonna bump this because I'd really like to know what it is as well. I have a xiaomi device, and 12gb out of 128 is used by "Other apps". My internal storage is only 7gb in total, system is around 14gb, and apps are 12gb, so this should only total to 33gb out of 128, but 46gb is used out of 128. Really confused.

It's kind of right in front of you.
If you have a NAS drive or a Computer with larger hard drive.
It's time to do some Spring Cleaning.
See all those Images and Videos you have there.... cut and paste them to your PC via regular USB transfer.
that means everything under the Camera folder.
Next major candidate, if you are using WhatsApp and WeChat, do the same thing, but for its own folder.
Then repeat again for any other social media App you have.

Tried this, still shows 11/12gb. Already checked my whatsapp files size, it's included in the whatsapp data section on its info page. All photos and media are shown seperately.

I don't know if this helps or not but about 2 years ago, was working with a coworker and they had a cheap phone with little internal storage, and he couldn't figure out where all of his space went. Come to find out, Chrome was taking up 2+GB! Check app cache for apps you rarely use and clear those, then go from there.

i doubt app cache can amount to 10gb, especially when i dont have many apps installed on MY device. Either way, I use the cleanup tool, which does clear cache, and still see no difference.
