Question Was Stuck in 5G. Found how to step back to 4G. - Google Pixel 6 Pro

First, I want to say my 6p was stuck in 5G and did not give me any choices to toggle it to anything else. Is this the norm -or- do I currently have a bug / glitch in my software.
.
I have the toggle "Use SIM" turned 'on'. I think I had a service select ten days ago. Maybe. I do not have a service selection now. Hmm, the other day, I had to re-do the whole phone setup to acquire an unlocked boot loader ( and its nasty a$$ start up message ). I am in a cell service dead zone. Sob. Boo Hoo Hoo. What can I do, I can't move.
.
Opened up a support ticket with the mountain people, { Support Inquiry: Case ID [8-8481000031771] } and they have not gotten back to me. So, I googled the problem and found . . . . . . .
"open phone dialer and type in * # * # 4636 # * # * then tap on "phone information", You should be able to change "Set network preferred type"." . . . . in the middle is a 'drop down', and there is a BIG list of twenty things that I do not understand ! . . . and the second item on the list had the word 'LTE' in its description.
.
Nowhere on this phone does it currently say I'm running 4G / LTE. Got two bars at the top. I think its two, they're so small to look at. Bought an app in the play store. Its nice ! Very nice and has a map also in it besides a lot of tech data I don't understand and can't use . . . The app is : Network Cell Info. It shows six towers all around me and too far away . . .

Good find. I think some other folks also found the same thing independently. For some others, the "Set network preferred type" was missing, IIRC.

You should also be able to switch between 5g, LTE, 3g etc by booting to safe mode.
With the method you used the string you want for LTE is:
LTE/CDMA/EVDO/GSM/WCDMA (PRL)
For 5g:
NR/LTE/CDMA/EVDO/GSM/WCDMA
For 3g:
GSM/WCDMA preferred
For 2g:
GSM only

Thank you. I expect the chocolate factory will roll a patch to anchor a list box in plain old setup. Am I giving them too much credit ? When I ( crashed ? ) factory reset from my root attempt, I had to re-setup. Third time now. And the 5G bug was back, looking smug.
Went into safe mode. Um, no dropdown. That makes sense because the mode does not know about a SIM.

Well you have to go into network settings and activate the network connection. The network is off by default in safe mode, but you can turn it on.

At&t temoraly RAT removal

I just play with my S3 I747 and find out how to temporaly remove RAT restriction.
Click phone then punch code : *#197328640# ->Umts->Debag Screen->Phone Control->Network Lock->Rat_Free_Supporting ON
After you click this you see " Now RAT Free Supporting". Click back button and try setting radio by pressing *#2263#.
RTA will lock back after restarting.
could you explain what "RAT restriction" is and what removing it will provide?

Here is a thread that talks about RAT restrictions. It appears to have to do with restricting access to certain bands, but I am swimming in waters that are deeper than my skills will allow.

I gonna do a run for this later today to see if it will actually work for allowing band selection and sticking.
It seemed to work for me, but it's only been a couple of minutes so far after turning off LTE. BTW, the first menu is "UMTS", not "Units".

Any suggestions on how to make these changes permanent without rooting?
Since there is now a known code to lift restrictions until reboot, I hope some dev will figure out a way on stock based roms (both stock and mods), as well as AOSP based, to make it permanent. I have tried AOKP and CM10 in hopes the LTE and 2G toggles would work but no dice with AT&T SGS3.

Given the issue at hand, it is most likely a deeply embedded setting that will not be available to standard user base (non rooted), henceforth root access or even on a programming level will be needed to make the necessary changes. How the changes will be made available, if it is done, will depend on what was needed to make it permanent. This raises the question of where is this restriction coded into the AT&T SGS3. Is it firmware, ROM, SIM related, Radio? Seriously doubt it is hardware itself since there are ways to get around the restriction.

Testing this method now. So far I am running on 2G. I will give it at least a couple of hours and will update this post accordingly.
Update: I was messing around and decided to save this USSD (the official name of these secret dialer codes) in my contacts. From dialer you can start pressing *#1 and when it appears just press it. This gives quick access should you need to change radios often. I also want to add that instead of going back into *#2263# you can also select the band from *#197328640#. If you want to change it immediately, then once you get the confirmation "Now RAT Free Supporting" press the menu key on the left of the Home button. Select back and repeat again to go back again. Then, instead of choosing Network Lock choose Network Control-->Band Selection. This takes you to the same menu that *#2263# does and you can select accordingly.
@norbarb...perhaps you can update your OP to reflect that you can stay within the original selection instead of *#2263# and just go back twice to access the band selection. It is just one more way of doing things.
I also did the test of rebooting my phone. As mentioned by norbarb, if you have rebooted the RAT restriction is back in place. Regardless of which option you take to the band selection it will show RAT restriction until you follow the OPs steps again to remove restriction. Have not found a way for permanent removal of the restriction yet (I am optimistic and really want this permanent so I will look very hard to find a solution.). Also when I rebooted I had GSM 2G only selected prior and I kept the option upon reboot so only the RAT restriction is reset...not the network band settings.
Update 2: After 4 hours I am still on 2G Edge. I am in a very good LTE location so this is definitely the most promising outlook. I have found that I despite my love for the look of AOSP roms, the inability to turn on 2G at all will keep me with TW for now. Thankfully I do not mind the look of TW and with root, I can kill the Bloatware. I will look at all of the options in the *#197328640# menus and see if there is anything that may can be applied for permanent access. I also wonder if the secret to overriding the lack of options for network choices in *#*#4636#*#* will be here as well as this would more preferable to shut down LTE only.

Isn't the problem with doing this, say if you disable LTE and only select HSPA, it wont go to any 2G networks if you are out of coverage. Because its not on 'automatic', its on HSPA. So if you are out of a service zone of HSPA, then you dont have anything to fall back to.
If only there was a way to disable LTE, and use the other networks 'automatically'.

That is the problem. However, AT&T in their infinite focus on trying to force users to their networks of choice has purposely had the ability to do network selections disabled. Under normal circumstances in android devices the option of network selection is under settings and mobile networks option. This is removed I am sure at AT&T's request. The other way to access this is to use USSD *#*#4636#*#* in dialer and select "Device Information" which will give you an option to choose a network preference. While the USSD works the option to select network preference does not work.
At least with the option to unlock RAT and using USSD *#2263#, it gives some sort of ability to choose a network. For me this is perfect since I want the 2G only due to poor 3G and LTE signals at work. However you are right that it is not convenient if you just want LTE off. For the moment there is no known way to obtain this option on the AT&T SGS3.

Yep. I also think it's something to do with AT&T network setup. Because on AOSP ROM's we can't toggle LTE either. But the same ROM on a Canadian model phone will work just fine.
Even though the iphone has an LTE toggle. At least I read somewhere that it does.

It has nothing to do with the network setup...it is the carrier forcing restrictions on their customers. I have had three other android phones (including my wifes) in the last three years. All of them were restricted from choosing the network from stock rom. The moment I uploaded a ROM such as CM or other AOSP Roms I was magically able to do a network select. I even had to Windows phones (6.1 and 6.5) and both of them were stripped but with some registry edits I was able to add the option back to select between 3G/2G and 2g only. It is AT&T's way and they are notorious for it.
On a side note, I would not be surprised if AT&T is the primary corporate network that pushed for this network SIM lock ruling by the Congressional Librarian. Of all the carriers they have the most to lose.

I have been testing this for the last 4 hours and it does seem to work. Went to 2g only area and it switched perfectly to 2G and reverted back to 3g when I left the area. However I am not able to do GSM ONLY (2G only) using this method. You will have to follow the instructions on this thread for that.

It could result in battery savings and reduced dropped calls. For instance, I am often in and out of areas with little to no bandwidths under LTE. At default, my phone would always looking for an LTE signal which means my battery takes a pounding. By having my phone only look for 2G/3G, I do not take as large of a battery hit. Besides that, LTE does consume more power. For the most part I leave my phone with LTE off because the data speed is not crucial for me. At home I have a really fast WiFi network so it is better to be on it anyway while at home.

Did you get 3G while choosing WCDMA Only?
If Yes,means you have to do it manually everytime you reboot your device.
If No,means you don't have a 3G data plan.
If you reboot your device mean while it will again set to prefered WCDMA so everytime you need to do it manually. Just to remember if you're getting 3G even on prefered WCDMA then leave it as it is. I think it's an issue regarding weak carrier signal.

Its not the build prop. Its how HTC designed the DHD.
The DHD isnt quadband, You can check the specs at gsm arena.
Some countries have thier 3g on a different band, so if you buy a DHD that doesnt scan for 3g on your countries band, you face the same problem.
I have being trying to fix this problem but got stuck along the way. Its very good to see that people also have the same problem. Maybe the devs would try something.

Nope..
Before i can try anything i have to put the device in diag mode which i have being able to, but the problem now is the device isnt showing up properly in QPST(a program for communicating directly to the qualcomm chip).
It detects the open port on windows but its unable to find the phone in the port.
If the phone doesnt show up in the port, changes cannot be done.
So thats the update.
If you have any idea, you could share
WCDMA
goto mobile network under settings, then select network mode, change it to GSM/WCDMA auto if it doesnt work then change it to WCDMA only.
It'll do the trick.

Disable 2G (LTE/UMTS only) solution

Sometimes the phone jump to 2G (EDGE) for no reason while HSPA and LTE work perfectly.
Here is the solution (and it will stay after power cycle):
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Phone Information
Scroll down to network mode and choose "LTE/WCDMA"
Reboot the phone immediately.
This method works for me.
Almost, its *#*#4636#*#*
Trying to do this on my D855 international G3, on lollipop, but can't get into the phone information .
*#*#4636#*#* works, but when I click on Phone Information, an error is given 'note this application does not work on this device' . I suspect a changed lollipop radio/Rom thing.
Any idea on how to achieve this another way?

Did you manage to fix it?
is there a solution for this on asop (euphoria 7/06)?.... after a call it goes to 2g and it "never" switches back to lte
New method:
Dial 277634#*# and you can get in Hidden Menu -> RAT Selection.
Typing 3856#*855# into the dialer allowed be in, then choose LTE, then RAT options.
Using the G3 D850 (AT&T) for t-mobile but it rarely conects to 4G LTE, it's usually on 2G, tried doing the above, with the *#*#4636#*#* code came up a error that I can't access that app, and in the hidden menu I couldnt find where/how to set WCDMA or LTE only, any new way to do this?
Qwerty when in hidden menu choose LTE-ONLY > then >modem setting> then > rat selection works on my g3

is there a way, that actually works, to change buildprop to always use umts??

I have played with buildprop before.... i found a place that said to change "ro.telephony.default_network" to "2"... this doenst work... it constantly switches back to hdspa....
i have better reception though, under umts.
if i go into my actual network settings, the default is always "gsm/cdma auto (prl)"... unless i specifically change it to "wcdma only"
I have consistently 5 bars with wcdma, 4 at the worst...... under the gsm/hdspa, i have normally 3 bars but often 2, 4 at absolute best but quite rare....
is there a *real* buildprop edit that will actually fix this??
thanks!
eta:i already have my phone set to use my home network only (manual network)... so its not trying to roam, ever, and thats why signal is down....
anyone?

in service mode, you mean the #*#* number thing?? if thats the case, i have tried that and even that reverts after like 5 minutes, not even a reboot required to revert that one either.......
a good example of why i want to do this is at work last night... on the gsm network, one tiny bar, my phone was struggling. switched it to wcdma, and bang, 4 bars.
i dont work in a basement or anything either. smaller 1 floor building with many windows.

Well I can speak for sediROM only but I can NOT confirm your mentioned back switch. I have configured WCDMA only or also specific bands only and they keep until a reboot..

*#*#2263#*#*
Keep in mind never using the back button here!!! only menu button and then back!
.
Giving this a try right now...
I decided to try wcdma only (instead of picking just one band)....
it does seem to help. the weird part is that if i go into my phones about section to see which type of band its on, at times it will still say the hdspa, but the reception remains so much better. its weird.
So im not sure if one of the bands in wcdma (it stars 3, although only 2 are available on my carrier), could also be a band of hdspa and thats why the name change?
it does seem to help reception though so far, regardless of the name it gives it.
just wish it stayed after reboot

When you want to choose individually select "wcdma only" and then go back and go to "combi bands". Then select all bands one by one (select one and use menu button - back! - select the next one and so on) .
Don't know what your carrier uses for bands and which one would be the correct ones for you sorry. Ask your provider he can tell you more hopefully.
Dont hesitate to use the incredible thx button if my post had helped you
.
it did actually help! I added that number to get to bands as a contact, so i just go in and press *# and it brings up the rest.
its actually not so bad , it takes a second each reboot but its not bad at all.

4.6)Then go to band 25 that is enabled and uncheck to disable.
4.7)Then go to band 41PCII that is enabled and uncheck to disable.
5.)Reboot the phone don't expect full LTE service yet there are still some more steps...
6.)Go to settings find VOLTE and enable. Search VOLTE in the search bar to enable it.Swipe right on the button to turn it on. New icon will pop up at the top of the phone if done correctly.
7.)Then go back to the dialer and type ##3282#
7.2)Go to edit
7.3)Then type 000000 again
7.4)Then LTE again
7.5)Then go to band priority
7.6 & 7.7)Set both bands 41 and 25 to the bottom of the list by typing the number 17 on band 25 and 18 on band 41 and that pushes them down the list. Make sure band 26 is set to 1 on the priority list.
7.8)Then turn off your phone and turn it back on.
This fix is broken from a network reset or ##72786# update or Samsung software update. So reapply the fix after each update or network reset

3.)The next step is to go to the dialer ##72786# that forces the phone to reactivate.

Why are you telling people to put b26 as highest priority. And put b41 as the lowest? B26 is 5×5 for the lowest spectrum and up to 10x10 or maybe 15×15.
While b25 is lowest 10×10 and up.
B41 is maybe TDD 20mhz/40mhz/60mhz up to 160mhz
B41 is really fast.
Its better to let ##scrtn# do the reprogramming and activate the sprint service and leave everything the way it was.
Changing priority or disabling the lte bands do not help the signal fix.
Only power users would put the b41 as the highest priority to have the highest speed. I guess you dont like sprints b41?

There are some areas to where b41 and b25 does not work well in rural areas like in WV for example, if people have roaming issues this fix does work. This helps with battery life. That is why I said (IF NEEDED).

You didnt state this is for rural areas anywhere. It seemed like you meant for all sprint users. Because people like me that live in big cities can use it the wrong way.
Also the sprint phones already have #1 25 #2 26 #3 41 priority as default.
B25 is nationwide and is faster than b26 anyway. The phone and the towers will load balance the service accordingly. So its best to leave it as is.
I think where sprint doesnt have good coverage, im sure most people wont be with sprint at that area. There are smaller carriers that have better coverage for some areas.
For roaming, theres a limit of how much you can roam and it differs by each plan and to whom you roam to.
For me it is 300MB for all carriers except tmobile.
Ive been to rural areas in my state. If i dont have any sprint bands to connect to or have very weak signal, I roam to a diff carrier like US Cellular by itself. You may think itll save battery to change priorities but its the same because it will always want to connect to sprint first.
I just dont want sprint users to take this and lose some of the great benefits of B41.
And also there are some areas that do B25 + B25 carrier aggregation.
This was an issue with the S10 and S10+...I have permanent data loss on.my S10+..little to poor reception away from my wifi...got run around trying to replace it..but got greate deal on trade in for note 10 +...v
I hope I do not have the same issue like this..or will return the phone and go with something else..dare I say even an iphone if I have to

Stop here on my SM-N976N, dialing ##72786# nothing happens.
Maybe someone could help me: I'm on Vodafone, no more VoLTE calls since upgraded from Note 9 no brand to actual model.
VoLTE is active, no doubt.
Tried with another SIM from other carrier: VoLTE logo appeared and eveything works fine.
Any suggest?

lol.. this thread is clearly for sprint users or ppl using their device on sprint with sprint csc..
if the dialer code doesnt work for u then its not allowed by ur carrier/csc.. that or u can enable it after rooting or by changing ur csc
Yep, I can read since I was a child, but this is a forum so it's normal to ask.
Thanx for your answer, the SM-N978N must be NOT bought, definitely.

Well let me tell ya my situation that I'm dealing with maybe we can help each other! Okay so I also have a note 9 N960U that I also can not get VOLTE, the issue is that Sprint never integrated a APK that gives me the VOLTE feature in the Pie Update, but in Oreo they DID. So I wonder if its because of the Android Update and the Vodafone doesnt support VOLTE on the current Android Build that you are on. Its like when Microsoft took DVD Maker of Windows 7 out when you updated to Windows 8 8,1 or 10. I'm trying to get more information and if I come across some more information on XDA to help your cause I will let you know.
I am on sprint. Followed this to the T and got the screenshot of the slow speeds. Followed steps 1-3 to reset the data and got the fast speeds. Not sure about your priority but I guess it can't hurt to try and see if it works for you. You can always reset if it is slow.

i think OP should change the threads' titles reared towards rural people. people take your advice and use it for other ways.
you are spreading wrong info. do you know that you can roam on tmobile lte? it is better than having no lte or just ehrpd.
stop spreading nonsense
