Hello guys,
yesterday I used the Samsung Memo to write a few phone numbers down, I was going to call them all later and didnt want to create new contacts for these people, so copied the first number, pressed home button, went to the phone app pasted the number and dialed. Good.
then I used the hold pressing the home button and flipped over to the memo app again. A BLANK PAGE greeted me... ie, there was no multitasking, the app cleared itself when I returned to home via the home button.
so how is this (NON) multitasking better than my wife's iphone?
hmmm, perhaps not?

Wrong forum. Shoo!
I'll answer your question though: The Samsung apps are not well made. Search the market for 'notes' and use a better one. Just because the app is included, doesn't mean it's any good. The market is there for a reason - in fact, it's the whole point of Android.

You can use either with the memo app, it will lose whatever was there when you come back.

oops, wrong forum, sorry, I had two tabs open on the browser and created a new topic in the wrong one...
so would it follow that android does not natively multitask, like ANY app in windows would keep your info if you Alt-Tabbed to another app then back again? it seems that APPS have to be written for multitasking as much as iOS ones do.
tx for other app tip, will check it out.
Mark.
Android has no problem with multitask, in fact, it has the better multitask-system that could exists (maybe the WebOS is better...).
When you develop an application for android, you have to choose what happens when the user press the "Home" button. Usually, developers chooses to backup the state of the application for the next launch (= multitask without memory usage).
But Samsung, for the Memo app, just choosed to... close definitely the App. That's all
But there is a lot of "Memo-like" apps in the market (for free) wich doesn't have this issue.
(excuse my english)

meego multitask-system is WAY better than the android one (real multitasking).
and symbian's too is pretty good (real multitasking).
I hate both android and iphone fake multitasking.

I can go back to memo and not lose it.
Op Learn how to use the phone. Then complain. Can your wifes I phone run run widgets? Customize the home screen? Change icons? Change launcher and lockscreen? Can you bind secondary functions to hardware buttons and soft keys to navigate to common functions faster? Do the notification interfere with what you are in the middle of? Is it dlna certified? Can it text to contact groups? Run google voice and transcribe your voicemail to text? Does it take panoramic photos? Play windows media? Does it take ota updates? I can go on....
The old iphone's lack of multitasking helped to idiot proof it and save battery which is what some people need. the idea of multitasking in ios 4 scares me. Ask those simple people that have no need for a smart phone other than its trendyness trying to do two things at once!
Android takes getting used to. It doesn't do anything for you, you are in control and that can be its strength as well as weakness.
You should be able to go to the home screen during a call and re-enter the dialer from the phone icon in the tray to add contacts without affecting the ongoing call. To re-enter the call you go through the notification bar.
(call will still be active but to get to the speaker phone and touch tone contols and have the proximity sensor turn the the screen off when phone is at you ear you go through the notification bar, or maybe the long press home method but I never tried that)
Hitting the back buton exits and is a necessary evil as a way not to leave apps running but not knowing that back kills the app and home doesn't will have you saying WTF all the time.

well yeah the symbian "real" multitasking is so graet that if you leave 2 apps open you can hardly make a call.
btw as mentioned before in android theres real multitasking its just up to the developer.
some apps like motonav go on running when you open another app and you can hear the voice directions.
but thank god most apps dond do so. i dont want my nfs shift to run in the background while im trying to run another game
Just the other day i was thinking of a way to implement a webos like card interface and i had an idea.
Is it possible to create a large widget showing open apps with a card like style and a screenshot of the app taken while pressing the home button?
I'm not a programmer so i am simply asking if this is possible.
Swipe to close could be another nice feature to it.
If this is possible and there is a programmer willing to try please contact me.

I don't know about Meego, but Symbian multitasking is as basic as it gets. Run a couple of apps in the background, then try browsing the net in Opera Mobile. 5 Minutes later with 3 tabs open Opera has to shut down due to no memory left. Nice real multitasking
Should be better with Symbian 3, but it's still a basic system that may have to shut down apps and lose work.
I'm looking forward to Meego's release though, finally some decent competition for Android. Kinda sad that Meamo is abandoned due to it though.
There's nothing fake about Android multitasking. A developer chooses what happens to the app when the use hits the back key or home key. Usually it exits when the back key is hit, or goes to the background when the home key is hit.
Different apps may work differently, it's up to the developer to decide. If an app has to shut down due to low memory, it can save its state first so that you don't lose anything.
Can't blame Android for Samsung's crappy memo app.

I don't know what you are doing but Symbian has REAL multitasking, not matter how much you don't like it. The sluggish response (in SOME phones) is a HARDWARE limitation, not the OS, that despite being old, it's a very capable OS.

I know it's real multitasking, I was just mocking how badly it handles low memory. At least with Android apps can save their state in that situation, and the app you are actually using is the last one that would be closed.
I expect Symbian 3 to improve that though.
Android mutitasking isn't any less real than the rest. It just works differently. If it goes wrong then it can generally be blamed on the app, since they have full control of what happens in various situations. Unlike Symbian where they can just get shut down without a chance to save anything.
Samsung just didn't program their memo app to save its state. Theres better apps to do the job.
Which of all these posts are related to development you say?
And now for the off-topic:
@OP: Don't get me wrong, not trying to be rude or anything, but you really don't understand yet how the phone works. If you hold the home button and switch between applications the text will be there when you go back. That's multitasking, as simple as that. If samsung's applications are crap that's another thing (which btw I agree, 42mb on apps removed from jpc and still works like crap, will try a fresh froyo build and see what happens then),
All this should be on the general section. Any mod out there willing to move this thread out of the dev forum please?
Regards

This is possible. You can catch draws, as well as everything else that would be needed. It would probably need a homescreen replacement.
Basic idea: catch when an app is going to background, call a draw to an offscreen buffer, then show it on the mainscreen as a screenshot. Not sure how easy any of this would be, since I've never tried to make a homescreen replacement.

By your great conclusion, so Android should have the same performance on the HTC Tattoo and the Galaxy S right?
The point is, there are different hardwares with the same OS. You cannot compare an N82 with a C7 right? sigh...

Well, glad to know that my idea is doable, the only problem is that i lack the skills, and even the tools to make something like this (any suggestion appreciated).
Hope some developer likes my idea and tries to realize it
lol, this thread is very, very stupid but nevertheless i want to throw in my 5 cents:
android has real multitasking. the system however can kill an app at any time when it feels like it needs the resources, this is maybe what happened to the OP. bad work by samsung because it could have saved the state to "disk". stupid of the OP because he obviously didn't push "save". good night and good luck!
I've been with Sprint for almost 9 years now, and before my Evo 4G in 2010 all I had were the old Nextel i95's...so needless to say I'm at a complete loss with WP7. I tinkered and tailored with Android ROM's for years now and have loved a lot about the OS...but I just couldn't pass up this deal for the Lumia 900 on AT&T. I'm beyond satisfied after having set everything up and loving how tightly knit and integrated a lot of the features are. But I still have some questions:
1) Can i screen capture with the stock rom? I don't want to have to unlock this phone (That was one of the reasons I left Android, you needed to unlock to do ANYTHING)
2) Are there any apps beyond the 3 that use a double tile? Is this a setting somewhere that I'm missing on? Kinda like resizing widgets?
3) Are there different themes, beyond the color switching pallete, that can be used with WP7? And while we're at it, is there a different lockscreen or anything else that can be done from it besides unlocking it? (Such as unlocking to text, email, custom app?)
4) What's up with the notifications disappearing after a while before I get a chance to check em? Is there a way to check them besides going to their respective clients to see what I missed?
5) Can you guys point me towards some alternative apps or settings to replace some of the stock feaures?
6) Besides having to login to AT&T all the time, is there a different way to monitor my data usage? A simple app perhaps?
7) Oh and how could I forget....do I have to go all the way to the settings every time to see what the percentage on my battery is? I found a couple threads saying that you have to unlock the phone for this feature but I refuse to believe that something this simple needs a workaround like that.
Thanks in advance guys, loving this OS and looking forward to some of the changes.
1) Unfortunately not. Most screen captures you see on the net are done using the development software.
2) Tiles sizes are determined by the developers. I wish there was a way of making them single or double too.
3) The colours are the only customisation you can do right now without unlocking the device other than changing the lock screen. The lockscreen I like, as it unlocks to the "desktop" when there is no notifications but if you unlock it as a notification happens then it will take you the application required to see the notification.
Also for some awesome lock screens go to the deviantart website.
4) This is my one and only gripe with WP7. Having said that after unlocking the notication is either facebook or twitter (the only ones not shown on the home screen) and both of those show on my "ME" tile. So really if I want to see anything I missed I go to the "ME" tile and slide across to notifications.
5) What stock features do you need help with?
6) Im not on AT&T and my phone provider has an app to do this so I would be contacting AT&T about this.
7) They do not show a % because its not very accurate I think. This is something I at first hated but I don't care that much any more. This is not like my Samsung Galaxy II which wouldn't last a day. I usually get over a days use out of my Lumia so I don't have to look all the time and be worried. When the love heart goes on the battery I know its getting low but still I have HOURS left.
In terms of number 5 I just meant is there an alternate keyboard, browser, gallery, search feature/marketplace etc. Not that I have a problem with any of these (although I do miss haptic feedback on my keyboard) I just wanted to know if there were alternatives.
EDIT: I do have a problem with ONE of those things I mentioned. The marketplace...it seems too cluttered and feels like the phone is always zoomed in with the way everything looks...but that looks like it was done on purpose.
You.can get two off your list with a Developer unlocked device. Think of it this way. Nokia is giving you a $100 credit because of the data issue. Use it to purchase a legitimate Dev key from Microsoft. Can sideload apps, and also develop with it.
1) can do it with homebrew Screen Capturer app.
2) Only Microsoft or OEMs can develop double wide tiles.
3) Need to have an interop unlocked device to add colors, etc. More involved than dev unlocked and not yet available for the L900.
6) The AT&T myAT&T app will give you the info you need. Nokia is also releasing a data tracking app. Coming soon.
7) Homebrew Battery Meter app. Updates a Live Tile every 10 minutes. Pretty accurate. Good history charts.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express
There are a few other browsers and such but they are all just front ends for the existing apps supplied with the device. There is also a few marketplace apps which you might find better. I use AppTastic every now and then purely as it shows what's on sale. There might be an app which I don't think is worth $5 or $6 after the trial but would happily purchase to support the developers for a few bucks.

Well, there are alot of the things that are different. Can't/Won't say if its better because thats a personal choice. I've grown to love the look and feel now. So has my daughter...but my son hates it. I gave them both 2 weeks to like it or I would buy them their next phone. My daughter converted...my son did not, and did not want new phone. But, with that said, there are some things I miss from Android....not much, but some. I do wish Live Tiles were a touch more customizable. I wish I could have some more color schemes instead of the just the current ones. I'd love to have a Black/White and/or Grey/white combination of colors also.
Otherwise....its a matter of just trying and getting used to it. I think it took my daughter 3 days to get used to the tiles and groupings of the hubs and what they are designed for. Her original list of must haves went away....
Thanks for all the help guys, yea I figured that most of my complaints/issues could only be solved with an unlock phone but I figured I'd ask. I've got another question, do apps auto update or do I need to manually check em every time?
Your marketplace tile will have a number on it showing the number of updates available. So no you never need to go check but you do need to initiate the update manually when you see that there is some waiting for update.
Again thanks guys for getting me started with the phone. Just a few more questions:
1) Is there a way to set a tile to immediately turn on/off either Bluetooth or Wifi? Or am I stuck with the default settings tile?
2) Can I save a setting where I don't have to download my pictures every time I open an email? I used to just pit "Always show pictures" on the Android GMail client.
3) I've looked and looked and still cant find a tile to just show battery. Can someone link me to an official one that I don't have to side load?
4) Is the app Bandwidth the only app for network speed test? Its kinda glitchy for me.
5) Is there a way to get that HTC Hub on this Lumia or is that another thing where I gotta unlock the phone? I really like the look of it.
6) Someone mentioned that you can change the lockscreen, or at the very least the wallpaper, how do you do that?
Thanks.

Dont know if someone mentioned this, but you're in the droid mentality right now. Like Apple, alot of the framework is locked down. Even with sideloads, alot of the framework is not available. HTC Hub is one of those. MS did not want that kind of screen and they don't allow it. WP is based on Live Tiles and they are sticking with it...for now.
You can change the lock screen pic by going to settings and Lock+Wallpaper. You can change the timeing settings and the picture. If you have a picture you want to use, go to your pictures hub and simply long press on the pic, use as wallpaper is an option.
But mostly, do not expect alot of hack/modding on these phones. For the most part, most of Windows phones, were Android phones at 1 time...ie the Samsung focus line. HD7 was the HD2 line which has been successfully ported to Android and WP7. If you want android type functionality in terms of look and feel...probably not gonna get it here. Of course, I could be wrong....but...who knows.

I don't have answers for all of these, but here's a few (and fwiw I agree
with alodar1). But before I begin, not sure if you're aware of the Marketplace online (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/marketplace) - might make searching easier as you're starting out.
1) "Settings Tile" is 1 such app (I don't use these, so I can't recommend which one to install, but I've seen this one recommended... *shrug*) http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/102014a6-156e-4604-8f1a-2a86e4edf191
2 & 3 don't know, sorry
4) TestMyNet works decent: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/a25ec139-fc33-4571-9425-cf031a3312bb
5) No, sorry (I had it and never really used it...)
6) Answered above =)
You may also want to check out 'AppFlow' (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/578ef361-c265-46b7-b6f4-63cbd7fbefe0) or some similar application recommendation app.

Yea I realize I still kinda am in that mentality. It's just there's so many little things I took for granted that I never realized were there until this happened. I love this platform so far though, I have no major complaints, just small issues with it. But thanks for the tip, yea I know about the HD2 cause the first thing my brother did when he got that a couple years ago was have me put Gingerbread on it lol. I'll stick with what I've got for now tho, this is a ridiculously smooth experience and if I've gotta make some sacrifices, oh well. I still get everything done that I want throughout the day...I just wished some apps were better supported.
Hello.
This is not an 'android vs iOS' thread. I'm just trying to learn some differences between android and iOS.
This could be very interesting/useful I think.
Please don't ruin this thread with flames.
My question is quite simple:
What kind of apps are possible on Android that aren't on iOS due to its architecture?
Or, perhaps, what kinds of 'actions' are possible in Android apps that aren't in iOS?
Here's what I can think of offhand.
You have the obvious ones:
1) widgets
2) file managers
2a) Titanium backup (is this true?)
2b) Programs can open any file (so to speak, like you can e-mail any file as attachment)
2c) Ways to just copy stuff on/off randomly:
Android you can ftp/wifi explorer/usb drive/external sd copy/dropbox
2d) USB mass storage
3) custom launchers/homescreens
4) custom keyboards
5) custom dialers (?)
6) Live wallpapers
7) CWM recovery for installing stuff/backup/recovery
7a) what does iOS users do if they hose their OS, if they can't flash a stock rom?
Note 2(ish) specific stuff:
1) External SD card utilities (directory bind, etc)
2) app-in window (popup video, aircalc, overSkreen, etc)
3) multi-window
But actually, I'm curious about stuff like:
1) Do programs like tasker/llama work?
Do they have access to the hardware like that?
'simple' stuff like - if I'm at home, turn on wifi?
If I plug in my headphone, turn on bluetooth? (my typical car routine)
2) Quickboot -
3) Something like droidwall - blocking internet access for program X.
Anything else?
I'm geniuinely curious what else Android folk take for granted that iOS doesn't allow for the sake of speed/stability/safety.
(which I find understandable, to be honest).
- Frank
In android you can set your own default apps (browser, dialer, MAPS ... etc). Also, apps can communicate easily. For example, if you are in the gallery looking at a photo and hit the 'share' button you'll be able to send that photo to whatever installed app that accept a photo (gmail, social networks, messaging apps, photo editing apps ...). The same goes for every type of file (music, videos, zip archives, pdf files ...).
About your tasker's question, I recently tried 'sony smart connect' on my note 2 and it works really well. You can activate tasks either manually, via events (headset plugged in, charging mode) or via the NFC enabled sony smart tags.

I don't think this is a good section for your question. This is more suited for the General Section of XDA (Since you're posting in an Android section I can gaurentee you that you're only going to get over-positive android responses and/or Apple/iOS haters. If you are intentually posting here because you want to hear android users then ignore what I said ).
Ontopic:
I always see it like this, Do you want:
SMS
Phone calls
Internet
Facebook
Twitter
A smooth running phone
Then iOS is the way to go for you. Do you want anything more, then Android is the way to go. On an iPhone there is only one way to go, the same way everyone else is going (You know from the commercials "Think Different"...).
On Android however you can personalize everything you want. I've been enjoying Android for over 3 years now and the ammount of different rom's, theme's, hack's, mod's, etc I've had in the those years is just insane. The possibilty's are just endless and thats why I love android, you will never get bored with your phone ! Don't like something, just change it. So not only Keyboards, Launchers and dailers, everything!

There shouldn't be anything positive or negative about this thread - I'm hoping it stays fairly factual.
If App X requires a permission that you can't get on iOS, then that's a fact.
Whether App X is a great or stupid app is besides the point.
You are right though, that ideally I need someone answering who is fairly knowledgeable about both operating systems.

1) widgets iOS has that
2) file managers iOS has that
2a) Titanium backup (is this true?)iirc, this just backs up all your custom settings etc? If so, we have multiple versions of that. also, cydia automatically stores ssh..shsh? idr lol, blobs.
2b) Programs can open any file (so to speak, like you can e-mail any file as attachment) that too
2c) Ways to just copy stuff on/off randomly: yep.
Android you can ftp/wifi explorer/usb drive/external sd copy/dropbox
2d) USB mass storage and again, yep.
3) custom launchers/homescreens By launcher, you mean themes I take it? and custom home layouts? yep.
4) custom keyboards have that too
5) custom dialers (?)and yes, even this.
6) Live wallpapers yep, though I don't use them.
7) CWM recovery for installing stuff/backup/recovery We can back up everything, even repos and installed tweaks.
7a) what does iOS users do if they hose their OS, if they can't flash a stock rom? what are you talking about? if you don't want a jailbroken phone you just install iOS again and restore your settings, can't android do that?
Note 2(ish) specific stuff:
1) External SD card utilities (directory bind, etc)
2) app-in window (popup video, aircalc, overSkreen, etc)
3) multi-window
But actually, I'm curious about stuff like:
1) Do programs like tasker/llama work?
Do they have access to the hardware like that?
'simple' stuff like - if I'm at home, turn on wifi?
If I plug in my headphone, turn on bluetooth? (my typical car routine) Used to have something that worked off gps locations, but there are a few different things that iOS can use atm. I personally don't know too much about it, but I believe similar things can be done.
2) Quickboot - What is quickboot? I'll tell you if I know haha
3) Something like droidwall - blocking internet access for program X. Not sure, never looked for it.
Anything else?
I'm geniuinely curious what else Android folk take for granted that iOS doesn't allow for the sake of speed/stability/safety.
(which I find understandable, to be honest).

I find most people who own android phones, yes, even on this forum, are quite ignorant about iOS. But hey, I'm ignorant about android! So we can learn from each other. Oh, and we have the drop down settings menu in a couple forms, and the better one, imho, sbsettings, is customizable as to what is put in it.
Replies in red.
There will always be more posibilities behind an opened door than a closed door.
Android is getting better and better and iOS has stayed the same since 2007. All iOS has over Android is games in app store and the apps are a bit more polished. Other than that iOS is for beginers.

You have the obvious ones:
1) widgets iOS has that -Are you kidding me? I think you don't know what is a widget.
2) file managers iOS has that Not without voiding your warranty with jailbreak. And it is not as extensive as the ones on Android
2a) Titanium backup (is this true?)iirc, this just backs up all your custom settings etc? If so, we have multiple versions of that. also, cydia automatically stores ssh..shsh? idr lol, blobs. -Titanium backup backups all your apps with their data and you can restore them anytime you want. I don't think iOS has anything like that(I think iTunes can do it...But you cannot backup and restore from your phone itself)
Maybe with jailbreak(i dont know) but you cannot do it out of the box. I stuggled with an iPad 2 and a Linux computer as I couldn't copy files without UMS
3) custom launchers/homescreens By launcher, you mean themes I take it? and custom home layouts? yep. iOS doesn't have customization to this extent. You can only change the theme of the icons and transtitions that too with jailbreak only. We can transform our phones to Windows Phone 7 style interface, iOS style interface, etc and much more!
4) custom keyboards have that too
5) custom dialers (?)and yes, even this.
6) Live wallpapers yep, though I don't use them.

Use a readable colour, I'll take you seriously then. -sigh- Honestly, the unwillingness to even listen is amazing on this forum. The little I read, was that I don't know what widgets are...yes I do. And yes, iOS has them. Oh...and you couldn't transfer files? lol...my god. All you have to do is plug the phone in or use ftp. Wow...just wow.

Yeah...I should have used a better color. I realised it after posting and I didn't wanna edit the whole thing again..
And plugging the phone does nothing. You cannot read the internal memory and you have to use the stupod iTunes which is not available in Linux.
But this discussion is going nowhere. Better say on topic! "What apps are not possible on iOS?" instead of saying what is possible(Even if the OP stated some things wrong)

Well, linux must suck more than I thought. I can use a number or programs to access the memory of the iPhone, or even set it up so that winblows or OS X sees it like a usb drive.
Oh, I managed to read one more thing...WP7? iOS has that as well. You must never have owned an iOS device, or at least jailbroken it. As for backing up settings? iTunes does that, so does aptbackup etc.
Maybe you should use a better OS than linux? I want to like linux...but it supports nothing. If linux has the programs os x / windows does, I'd use it in a heart beat.
Well I can share my thoughts after spending a year with the iPhone 4 as my main mobile device.
2) file managers: iFile is good. It's like Root Explorer on Android. It did everything I needed it to do.
2a) Titanium backup (is this true?): Backing up an iPhone was HARD for me. I didn't want to use iTunes for it, so I ended up doing manual backups, pulling database files for contacts, sms, call logs and things like that from system folders using SSH. There is no Titanium Backup for iOS. Trust me. I spent DAYS looking for a good backup app in Cydia. Nothing. There are apps that back up your Cydia sources and packages, so that's useful, but they wouldn't back up system settings, sms, call logs, apps and app data.
2b) Programs can open any file (so to speak, like you can e-mail any file as attachment): There is a tweak in Cydia that will allow you to attach any file to an e-mail.
2c) Ways to just copy stuff on/off randomly: I used SSH and an FTP client
2d) USB mass storage: DiskAid, http://www.digidna.net/products/diskaid
3) custom launchers/homescreens: You can arrange your icons freely... Tweaks in Cydia will allow you to put icons anywhere without them snapping to the grid. Pathetic customization options, absolutely awful and very boring.
4) custom keyboards: Well, not really... You can theme it black if you want... and add emoji support... And add a fifth row. With Cydia tweaks, of course not if you're not jailbroken.
6) Live wallpapers: vWallpaper in Cydia. It destroys battery life though. http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/12/...per-2-live-wallpapers-get-ios-5-compatibility
7) CWM recovery for installing stuff/backup/recovery: I almost LOL'd... That's a no.
7a) what does iOS users do if they hose their OS, if they can't flash a stock rom? Restore with iTunes (the equivalent of re-stocking using Odin)
For automatic wifi/bluetooth toggling and similar, look here: http://lifehacker.com/5908536/how-to-make-your-iphone-read-your-mind
You CAN do those things but in my experience the whole setup process is just infuriating. Many times you have to install small individual Cydia tweaks for every little thing you want to change, and it will make your iPhone slower and more unreliable, more prone to random things happening like MobileSubstrate crashes, reboots... My iPhone once mysteriously uninstalled two games on its own, they were just gone. No doubt due to my jailbreaking and all the tweaks I had, but still... Random things can happen is my point.
The iPhone is known for being smooth in operation, reliable, and a jailbreak will really mess with the stability. It's ironic, that you have to make the phone more unstable and compromise its smoothness and battery life in order to get it to do things that we take for granted on Android.
Overall applications quality is better, if not way, in iOS. We Need 100 good quality apps rather than 50 average and 50 below average ones. Frankly too much crap apps are in Play Store with top rating.
And even iOS 5 is hell of a lot smoother than JB. Still I keep using Android for 3 years as there is too much restriction in iOS.
And people who don't own an iPhone, you don't own an iPhone, so they don't have right to comment. I do, thus I did.

I think it is still valid to include (perhaps in a separate list) what is possible with a jailbroken phone, just as I'd include stuff possible on android with a rooted phone. I suppose custom rom territory is getting a bit much, since technically anything is possible with a custom rom.
So some further questions:
My crude research says there are file transfer tools on IOS, but it's not direct. You can only send 'supported' file formats , so it goes through some sort of proxy. correct?

Did you mean that you only want the answers to be about what can be done on an unjailbroken iPhone? Or did I misunderstand?
iTunes file transfer is of course massively limited, you can only send supported formats through there. But if you're jailbroken and send things through SSH for example, you can send anything you desire.

You didn't misunderstand - my question wasn't well formed.
To be honest, I hadn't thought that far.
As I mentioned in my first post, I'm basically trying to understand the differences between iOS and Android.
That way, if I recommend a phone (to others, or myself), I can make an informed decision based on their needs and style.
So I think it's useful to know what Androidian things aren't possible on stock iOS.
And also useful, for the more adventurous/tolerant folk, to know what's possible on a jailbroken iOS, or other unorthodox means.

By the way, when you have time, you should check out this video series highlighting the differences between iOS and Android: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMiY1kSTHZw
It's in five parts. VERY enlightening, well worth watching. When I still had my iPhone and was starting to feel like it was time to move back to Android, those videos really opened my eyes and helped me make my decision.
*****UPDATED 11/30/12*****
tl;dr -- It was the best freaking decision I've ever made in my cellular life.
Things we miss:
- iMessage (Use something like Kik as an alternative)
- iLife and iWork for iOS (Various replacements. I started using ePrint by HP for my wireless printing needs. Works almost as well)
- Game Selection (I work on my phone, so playing games doesn't affect me much, but a lot of the core games are still there)
Things you gain from the switch:
- Bigger screen for easier reading.
- Battery life is omg good.
- The cameras are just as good in my opinion. Low light shots are grainy.
- S Pen is really useful for taking notes in a pinch. Pull it out, jot the note, put it back, note autosaves.
- Other S Pen functionality is really nice. Things like previews in the calendar, cutting out parts of the screen to save in notes, etc.
- Performance is bar none better 10-fold perceptively. I never have a moment of hesitation on my phone.
- Tops out at 128GB (Eat that 16GB iPhone 5)
- Size doesn't really hurt your pocket that badly. Bigger screen catches the bosses attention. I have had more than one comment at work about how I take my job seriously being ready for anything like that.
************************************************
I have an iPhone 5 presently and have been debating for several days now whether of not I want to get the Note 2. I have watched Phonedogs comparison and read article after article and it feels like the phones pretty well break even. So I thought I'd ask some former iPhone users about their experience with their switch.
I have Apple TVs and Airport Expresses all over the place. I stream things almost exclusively while I'm at home. I also mirror my phone to the TV at night laying in bed (doing that now typing this). That being said, I know android has apps that support airplay but not necessarily a screen mirroring solution short of VNC that would require a PC hooked up to my TV and a whole lot more of an inconvenience to get fired up.
I don't know what android has that is directly on par with iWork for iOS. I love typing up documents, syncing them to my phone with iCloud, and being able to edit and print them from my phone wireless on practically any and all wireless printers regardless of brand. iWork for iOS works completely and with a full feature set that I don't ever remember finding in Documents To Go. Has this improved at all?
Not knowing much about the Android ecosystem, what kind of apps are equivalent to iMovie? I use that quite a bit and am curious what android solutions match that in ease of use and functionality. I can't stress enough that when I ask these comparison questions, I'm not trying to prove one better. I'm actually wanting to make the switch. I'm just looking to be more informed about what I'm loosing and what I'm gaining before doing so.
What have you iPhone users missed about your iPhone since you made the switch?
I miss iTunes and some of the apps from the appstore. However, it all makes up it when I remind myself that "can't do no work on a 4" screen"
I switched. No regrets
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
In my opinion, the only thing missing on Android is the robust game/app selection and consistency in layout/design. I have an iPad 3 anyway, so I have the best of both worlds regardless. The iPhone in both 3.5" and 4" alike simply isn't useful for my needs anymore.
PS: I have a WDTV Live that will allow the equivalent of "Airplay" without any hassle through the Note 2. In terms of exclusive apps (e.g. Garageband, Numbers, Pages, iMovie, etc.) there is no equal. If you are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, it may be somewhat difficult to switch.
I know the Note 2 comes with Polaris Office included in the stock ROM. Probably won't touch the iWork suite in terms of interface and usability, but give it a try on a demo model and see if it may work for you.

I thought i was the only one who misses that little feature. Aside from that, I currently own both phones and theyre both fantastic but sadly I prefer my Gnote2 over my iph5. The big screen is a huge plus and the S-Pen is really neat. But I do like the apps more on the iphone.

This can be done in 2 ways on the GN2. One wny is to switch on the feature in the settings under "Motion"/"Double Tap". Otherwise, assuming the long text is in a browser you can use Boat Browser (which is very customizable) and has this feature.
Regarding AirPlay and the other things mentioned in this thread, can you not simply keep you iphone as a Wifi only media player/streamer?
I use my old Galaxy SI as such with Spotify. Without a Sim card and a 3g data connection the battery can last almost three days also

The question is per user. I prefer the non-locked down system of Android. Watch a lot of movies and the iPhone has to be jailbroken to do anything other then basic usage. XBMC on my Note2 + MHL adaptor and no rooting. I love the customization.
Another reason I switched was because of iTunes. What a mess. I have a lot of mixes for music and iTunes splits it up. I prefer just being able to dump on my sd card.
Only thing I miss is the gaming apps. But not that much that I would switch back.

Does it work for the browser? That's where I need it the most.
I've owned and used as my main device every iphone up to the iphone 5. I'm loving the Note 2, but there are a few things I miss:
- Overall simplicity. There was a lot of handholding in iOS that I didn't even necessarily realize was happening, which I miss. Biggest/most annoying example so far: sending videos via MMS or email. Unless you have the "limit size to MMS" or whatever checked when you record the video (which would mean a crappy source quality in the video, should you want to use it for anything other than an MMS), you can't MMS it to someone (and unless it's more than a few seconds long, it'll likely be too big to email as well). There are some apps out there for transcoding the video to a lower bitrate, resizing, etc, but this is a royal pain to have to do any time you want to send a quick video. iOS did it all automatically when you went to send the video.
- Better versions of apps. Some apps are just better/smoother on ios. Examples include facebook, Steam, The Weather Channel.
- Photo Stream. My wife is on an iPhone, and we have an old ipad that we use as a photo frame. I miss being able to easily have photos I take appear on both her phone and the iPad.
- iCloud. I miss stuff syncing with my mac desktop apps for things like notes, reminders, etc. I'm sure I could find something to get me by for the notes, and the others I mentioned would sync to a Google calendar, but still. I miss all that happening automatically.
Overall though, I'm very happy to have made the switch. There is no way I could go back to that tiny iPhone screen now.

Those are good points to know, thank you. Looking back I do remember video sending being a pain. I eventually ended up doing private Youtube uploads all the time and linking people to the videos. An extra step.
Not that I'm saying that's a deal breaker at all, but it's those little things. Does Android have a response to Photostream out of the box? If I recall, doesn't it automagically upload to Google+ or something of the sort?

It does upload to Google+, yes. I wound up turning that off, though, since I rarely use Google+. I did turn on automatic photo/video uploading for Dropbox, though, and I am absolutely loving that. I know there's photo/video upload in Dropbox for iOS, but this all happens via a service running in the background, so you don't have to have the actual Dropbox app open for it to happen.
Something else to note about the auto-upload for Dropbox (and Google+, for that matter): you can use that to share videos/images easily. Only issue is the person receiving it has to download/stream the full-res video or image, and you have to wait for it to upload before you can share itg. Still much easier than transcoding just to send a video, though.
I'm using both....Loving both
Hello, I often hear that EveryNote is the best note taking app. What is the difference between it and S Note, Lecture Note?
S Note can only sync between Samsung devices, and the old&new versions aren't compatible with one another. Evernote files can be accessed on any device that supports Evernote. Never used Lecture Note, so can't speak for that.
There's a free trial of lecturenotes. It's best to try it and see for yourself since we all have different needs when it comes to software. Then you can compare the three yourself.
Since I find the cross platform treatment of hand written notes lacking in evernote I use lecturenotes and sync exported pdf files via dropsync to dropbox. Evernote is okay in my opinion but not as feature rich when it comes to taking hand written notes.
When it's all said and done, none of the three are perfect and I personally find that I wish for a feature or two from the others.

The newer versions of s note can indeed sync with evernote. This is how I got one year of premium evernote services.

Initially when I purchased the Note Pro the notes that I'd take in S-Note and sync with Evernote were practically useless to me on my Mac/PC. Has this changed? They'd be saved in a proprietary format or an image file that was too small physically to be useful to read on my high res screens. PDF export was an option but with the limited page size support in S-Note I found myself looking elsewhere in a hurry for a note taking tool that truly mimics a letter sized note pad.
I bought a program a while back that I can comment on. It's called Handrite note Notepad Pro. By NC Corp. Needed it before I owned a device with SNote built in. I used to use my finger..... But now with my pen, I like it even more. But I already bought it so I didn't have to decide if I wanted it over the other OP ideas and other suggestions from muzzy996. It syncs using Dropbox through an additional program that is called Open Sync and that is free. Works well. But the handwriting Pro is cool and features some neat options. Might not be everyone's cup of tea with how it replaces text as you write but most things are adjustable.
Microsoft’s Onenote beta is very good. Handwriting is good, syncs with PC, you can search handwritten notes on computer (but not on tablet).

I wasn't aware of the size issue. I had some old notes that transferred over and indeed they are not full size. I don't know if that's just for the screen, maybe they would print out on normal size paper? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. ...
No problem. Yeah S-Note simply doesn't work for me in terms of page setup options. It's fine for simple note taking but sometimes I prefer being able to generate a set of notes with a specific page setup in mind such as a letter sized page in a particular orientation with a particular layout of lines/grids as a background.

How is Google Keep compared with Everynote, S Note and Lecture Note?
Rather simplistic compared to the others. I haven't revisited it in months but as far as I know there's no active stylus support in Google keep.

For me Everynote and Google keep are like a collection of sticky notes. Ln and Snote are more like a collection of notebooks with more pages and options to manage large notebooks. Those apps are for completely different use cases with Ln being focused on students and many notebooks.

Indeed.
Lecturenotes has quite a bit of features though it doesn't always do a good job of providing them in a user friendly way. As an example, pen colors and line thicknesses can be shown in a toolbox on screen but for everything else one must drill down through menus. It would be nice if toolboxes were available for other functions as well in that software.
Its definitely more powerful than the others though even if there are limitations in some respects. An example of the power of lecturenotes is the ability to work on multiple layers (i think the limit is 3) which can be helpful when one is working with graphical elements vs writing/text. An example of limitations in Lecturenote is whereas in SNote when an image is pasted into a note it always remains as an editable image (you can click on it to move it and resize it), in lecturenotes that isn't necessarily the case. In lecturenotes if you want to change the size or location of a pasted image on your page you must select the image using the marquee tool and then expanding the image at that point comes with loss in clarity as it is scaled up. Overall the power of lecturenotes is great though.

What is the page size issue in S-Note?
If you import s-note files into evernote they are physically smaller.. in other words you can't use the s-pen to edit in evernote because the size of the note is too small and does not take up the entire screen like in s-note.
It goes beyond that for me. If all one ever wants is to work within the confines of the Samsung Galaxy Note ecosystem everything is good when it comes to S-note. However, if the need is to take notes on predefined page sizes for printing there is no way to do so. All one has in terms of page types is landscape or portrait orientation with a variety of backgrounds and form types, there is no way to control paper size. These do not print well at US Letter or other page types. I bought this larger note because it's screen is closer in size to a real letter page and yet the applications baked in don't support that.
The is why I use lecturenotes. I have complete freedom to do custom sizes for printing.

Do you mean electronically speaking, the notes are fine. However, they do not print well on papers? How about saving/printing them in pdf format and then send the file to the printer? I use A4 size notes as notes for my work. I am considering to write notes electronically on the Note PRO 12.2. Of course, I do hope to be able to print it out like a A4 size note. Is this possible? If not, from your post, it seems that lecturenotes can do it.

On a standard yellow notepad in US Letter size there are 28 lines available to write on. In S-Note if one creates a notebook using the standard lined page in portrait orientation there are only 18 lines available. To fix this one has to avoid using lines completely by using a blank portrait template. Then what you do is go into the notebook, click the gear icon and change the background, click the upper left box for blank white page, then hit pattern, then pick the second from the right box on the top row.
Once this is all done you have a page that approximates a standard yellow pad.
EXCEPT if you print this thing, it doesn't fill the entire width of an A4 or Letter sheet. When printed to fit on letter, you lose 1.7 inches of width of the page. When printed to fit on A4 you lose 1 inch of width. Doesn't sound like much but on average you're losing 20% of available space on a page.
Its all a bit convoluted and honestly I rather not deal with the BS of it all and I opt to go to LectureNotes instead. With it, I'm able to set up all aspects of a notebook at the time of its creation. Additionally I can place items on different layers to move things around if I wish. The only thing I missin Lecturenotes is how S-Note handles images that are pasted in. In S-Note these pasted images remain as editable objects allowing you to move them and scale them about as you please. In LectureNotes you need to be careful of where you place images because they no longer are treated like smart objects.
Thanks. By losing certain inches of width of the page during printing, do you mean those parts are being cut off? Isn't is possible to scale down the entire page to make printing of everything possible?
If I just draw images, than there should not be a problem in LectureNotes? So, there is no perfect app. I don't want to choose an app, make a lot of things using it. Then, later find that there are some limitations and switch to another app while losing the stuffs I create using the first chosen app.
There DEFINITELY is no perfect app.
See the attachment below. Notice the white vertical strip. That white strip you'll never be able to write in . . . the darkened corners of the notepad image is the absolute corners on the tablet itself when you zoom/pan around in the notepad.
Edit: To clarify, the image attached is what a printed page would look like on US Letter when a page layout of portrait is selected in S-note and the user fills the entire page with notes (simulated by me drawing at the extreme corners). The print is maximized to the long side of the page.
