Can't install TWRP on A5 2017 with Android 8.0.0 - Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Questions & Answe

Hello All:
I'm new here, so please forgive me if I accidentally have bad etiquette or break any rules. Also, please forgive the length of the post - I'm trying to include as much useful info as possible.
I'm trying to install TWRP on my refurbished Samsung A5 2017 I'm following the LineageOS instructions at https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/a5y17lte/install. The TWRP images I've tried to install can be found at https://dl.twrp.me/a5y17lte/.
When I try to install "twrp-3.5.2_9-0-a5y17lte.img", Heimdall ends with "Uploading RECOVERY 100% RECOVERY upload successful Ending session... Releasing device interface...". So everything looks good, but the progress bar on the phone never changes even after 6 hours. When I hold Volume Down and Power buttons the phone reboots into the OS that came with it.
When I try to install an older version, ("twrp-3.5.0_9-0-a5y17lte.img"), the behaviour is slightly different. Heimdall returns the same success messages, but the phone immediately reboots into the OS without me pressing any buttons.
I've done some searching on XDA and via Google and found problems that sound similar to mine, but the descriptions aren't close enough for me to be confident that they're the same problem. My searching so far makes me think that one of the software updates that occurred before I purchased the phone made it either more difficult, or impossible, to put LineageOS on the phone. I also got the impression that I might need to install an earlier official Samsung ROM before I proceed, but that safe and reliable ones are hard to find.
Here is (I hope) all the information needed for some of you wizards to figure out what I should try next:
Phone: Galaxy A5 2017
Model Number: SM-A520W
Android Version: 8.0.0
Samsung Experience version: 9.0
Branding: Telus
Baseband version: A520WVLSECTJ1
Kernel: 3.18.14-16556433-QB35318982
Android security patch level: Nov. 1 2020
Used for installing images: Linux Mint Ulyana and Heimdall via command line commands
Other possibly relevant info:
-"Secure Download : Enabled" shows on 'Downloading' screen
-Seems to be a Telus branded phone
-OEM Unlock is ON
-USB Debugging is ON
-All other switches under 'Developer Options' are OFF
-No SIM installed yet
-Phone has never been connected to WiFi or Cellular Data since I received it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Doh! I solved the problem myself by watching a YouTube video. The LineageOS directions are correct but a bit confusing - the video clarified the procedure by showing someone doing it with phone in hand and computer connected. Case closed!

Hello Friend! I have the same problem! Could you provide the video that helped you? thankful!

Sure! The video is here:
. There are no verbal instructions - the soundtrack is just music. As I watched the video I was pausing it and following the written instructions on the LineageOS site: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/a5y17lte/install. I forget what it was now that I had missed, but the combination of the video and the instructions got me sorted out. Good luck! And if you you find an earlier version of LineageOS for the A5 2017 please post it. My phone works great, but I find Oreo really annoying and I'd like to install a more sensible version.

Lifetab E10310 root

Hi folks,
I would appreciate it if someone can help me getting the Lifetab Tablet (E10310) rooted which I bought about a week ago. Unfortunately I have to post the thread here because of the forum restrictions (less than 10 posts...).
Referring to the main threat http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 modes 1, 2 and 3 haven't worked with the latest v30. It seemed that mode 2 was close to get the tab rooted at least as the console screen didn't show up where you have to enter the two command-lines (/data/local/tmp/...). Further the background image changed and the manufacturer characteristic apps were gone after the process so I had to make a factory reset.
Specifications of the tablet are as followed:
Medion Lifetab
Model: E10310 (MD 98382)
MSN: 30015596
OS: JB 4.1.1
Kernel version: 3.0.8+
[email protected] #5
SMP PREEMPT Thu Mar 28 10:53:20 CET 2013
Build number: JRO03H.20130328.143339-r
Maybe someone from you or Bin4ry himself can give something to the best thanks
rooting method lifetab
Isn't there anyone having an idea ?
I think there are many people searching for a way to get the tablet rooted, can't believe it's that complicated. Maybe someone can refer this thread to the upper main thread.
I would spend two beers for the person who got a solution for the problem
V31 doesn't work too.
Still nobody who knows to root Lifetab E10310??
It's possible!
I've just found the way to do it, thanks to this thread (in French).
It uses the Chinese VRoot method, explained here. I have just applied it without problem. My tablet is now rooted.
Just be sure to delete the original Chinese superuser app with a file manager, as described in the main thread.
In addition, I had also to uninstall the app with a chinese title (at the end of the apps list), that is installed during the procedure. I have no idea of what it does but it is present in the App Store. Anyway, I don't understand the messages in Chinese. That second app is not described in the main thread, probably because it is installed by a new version of the VRoot Windows program. You don't need it.
[EDIT] The installed app is available on the Play Store here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mgyun.shua.su
Thanks r0lZ :highfive:
it works perfectly.
im looking to enter the recovery mode if this tablet since kaspersky locked my friendsout.
he wanted to uninstall kaspersky because his license ran out, it asked for a code and now he cannot use his tablet anymore

[Solution] Attention D855K Owners! (Australia)

Dear Denizens of XDA!
I've finally fixed my phone upon giving up hope a few months ago. In short points, here is my story:
Installed Freedom.apk (by-pass in-app purchases)
Updated to the latest firmware without removing apk
Could no longer connect to official Google servers (ie playstore, gmail) BUT internet worked
Went to LG for quote on fix, stated that I need to replace motherboard ($250)
Gave up for months until TODAY.
Disclaimers:
I did not develop any of these programs but merely stumbled upon them. I do hope that this solution works for you but I cannot guarantee anything.
Do these at your OWN risk. I cannot and will not be held liable for any further damages caused by following my steps.
My phone:
LG G3 D855K from Telstra August 2014.
(crappy) 2GB ram, 16GB storage model.

I'll give special thanks to these people; I did NOT receive any consult or speak to them but they have provided the tools in which I used to fix my LG G3 which would no longer connect to the Playstore and other important Google services. Many thanks to:

'How I did it':
1 - Download and install the LG USB drivers from [Link 1]
2 - Download and extract [Link 2]
3 - Download your relevant LG G3 Firmware from [Link 3]! Type in your IMEI code to find the exact software/firmware that you require.
4 - Copy the downloaded .kdz file (should be ~1GB) into the same folder as the [Link 2].

7 - https://www.dropbox.com/s/1f9rkqq32pxncgv/Steps_part3.PNG
7.5 - Please note that the language settings are not necessary. I've simply set it to English so I could read the messages/notifications.
8 - LG Software will pop-up again and let it do its own thing.
9 - An error message of Server couldn't be connected or something of the like will appear. Do NOT press exit.
10 - Look at your phone and you'll see that the firmware updating logo/downloading.
11 - Once your phone reaches 100%, the program on the computer may freeze and be required to be shut down. (This is okay once it's complete).
12 - Allow your phone to reboot, this may take 5-10 minutes.
13 - You'll get the applications being optimized.
14 - Just before you press start the phone may reboot, that's fine as well.
15 - Enjoy!
If you have any issues with the actual flash tool software, please check the 64-page thread AND use the search bar.

Unfortunately, I did not expect this to work for me so I do not have any video footage of me actually attempting this procedure.
If you have any other questions or queries please do leave a comment below. I am not an avid user of XDA but will try and respond when I can do so.
Worked? Thank me? (Sorry if I'm optimistic!)
The only thanks I would like to receive if this works is if you can download the firmware from [Link 3], keep a backup, and re-upload it somewhere to share with other users in need.
If you do decide to re-upload, please do keep the details of the firmware.
I hope that this solution does work for you.
And one final reminder that if you do copy what I did, you proceed to do so at your own risk.
Good luck.
I know this is a couple of months old but wanted to say thanks for posting this - had a G3 stuck on the firmware update screen, couldn't boot into download mode etc... Took a while searching and installing about 26 different flash tools but finally this method worked. Cheers!

And I know I'm pretty late to reply but I'm glad it helped you as well.
I did the same thing as you and took me a while of researching to find a solution. Albeit I've now jumped ships and no longer own the LG G3.
Good luck for the future

I discovered that this site (LG Mobile) is, in fact, not responding properly to the browser file request ... but the files are there.
I used Xtreme Download Manager to download it. Just manually input the desired file link ... and it'll do its magic!

Android developement question.

Hi,
I just got a new galaxy a5 2017, and i saw that the phone doesn't have any rom on the dev page.
So I would like to dev one by myself but before I begin the project i have a few question, I have already searched on internet but every tutorial have been done in 2012-2013. I need to tell you that I never build any rom .
The GA5 2017 doesn't have samsung update to nougat so can I take nougat AOSP ?
How can I be sure that the bottom will match with the rom ? (when I push power bottom, the phone will start ?)
How to be sure that every hardware will match with the software (APN, BOTTOM, SCREEN, SENSORS ETC) ?
Does samsung give a sort of map of the different hardware of the phone to be recognize by the software ?
So before I begin I need to know those things and if you have any others advices they are welcome. If you are a developper, I will be very interested if you can help me and learn me. :good:
Thank you for your answers.

Help - detailed guide to install custom rom needed after rooting

Hello,
I'm a little stuck on how to install a custom rom on my RN8 Pro after rooting and wondered if someone could answer my questions / explain certain points in a simpler way that some of the guides in this forum. Ideally I'd like it explained as if you were trying to guide a 5 year old - I say this as the was an XDA guide exactly like this for my last phone which was fantastic and had no ambiguity.
I'm currently on:
- chinese rom
- MIUI11.0.3.0.QGGCNXM stable 2.0G
- Android 9
I believe all steps for unlocking the bootloader and rooting are complete. I followed the steps in THE ORIGINAL POST of this guide (I don't think the rest of the posts in that thread are relevant but not sure): https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/how-to/guide-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-t3995919. Everything seems to work as detailed and Magisk Manager was installed though I've done nothing with this and not sure if I need to. Is this correct?
I'd like to install Lineage so, following a link from another thread in this forum, I've downloaded "lineage-17.1-20200607-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_avN.img.XZ". Is this correct or should I be looking for a ZIP? If so, where?
Assuming the above .XZ file is correct (or after I get the correct file from somewhere), what are the exact steps I need to follow to actually install the rom? I've read things referencing Dalvik cache, clearing certain things, etc but I'm really unclear on this bit and still not sure on the install process. I thought the mega thread would help but there's so much info there I'm even less sure what's applicable or not after reading it. I assume the TWRP I installed in the guide I followed above is used (or maybe an updated version?) but I'm hugely confused over the precise steps to take - the guides seem very detailed on unlocking / rooting but too brief (for me) on rom install. This is the point I would really like explained as if it were to a 5 year old please, along with any followup steps required.
I'm also unsure on the steps required for a backup in case things go wrong. Again, the various threads appear to have different methods depending on what version of TWRP you have installed (I think this is true, as I said I'm confused after a certain point). Maybe the points I did in the guide I followed covered this but I'm doubting it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - the chinese rom is driving me nuts and I'm really keen to move from it.
Thank you
you miui build is android 10 based (check the "Q" after the version number), so recheck the threads just in case.
Thank you for the reply but I dont understand. I've gone into all specs at it says:
Device name: Redmi
Device model: Redmi Note 8 Pro
MIUI version: MIUI 11.0.4 | Stable | 11.0.4.0(PGGCNXM)
Android version: 9
Android security patch level: 19/12/01
Are you saying the Android version is 9 but the MIUI is based on 10? If so that confuses me even more. There is a MIUI update pending (it's been wanting to update for a while) but I've held off installing it.
If you are correct and I need to downgrade (I think that's what you're saying?) then I'm pretty sure I understand how to achieve that part. It's the actual installing of the rom where I'm confused. For example, is the IMG.XZ the correct file type? Exactly what do I do to install it? Etc. The guides here spend a lot of time on the unlocking part - which for Xiaomi phones is a pain so understandable. It appears to me a bit less detailed on the rom install - likely because people on this site may have done this many times before. That's the bit I;m querying and unfamiliar with so any links to step-by-step guides (particularly for Lineage) after rooting would be helpful.
Thanks again for your response
hey man, check your first post, the miui version number (MIUI11.0.3.0.QGGCNXM), it says it's an android q (10). i've just wanted to tell you to be careful and eventually not brick your device, that's all
Thanks for the reply - I really appreciate it.
Bricking it is the last thing I want to do
I'll re-read the other threads (3rd time) but i'm not hopeful that I'll be able get anything more out of it than I already have. I think i've understood a fair bit of it (up to unlocking) but just can't seem to find a step by step guide for the rom.
Hopefully someone else will be able to chip in with some advice and thanks for what you've offered so far.
Thanks

Galaxy Watch R815F - need help with region change

Hello guys,
I have seen a lot of topics on this subject and honestly i don`t know were to start. Yes, i am a old guy and total noob on flashing roms and so on...
Recently my carrier in RO, Vodafone has implemented an option that allows using ESIM on other devices. that being said i proceed activation the option and trying to make my trusty companion R815F to work. Went to Samsung care and they told me that the watch is using an UK region code and will not work with my RO carrier. ( bought the watch also in Romania but .. well apparently it was destinate for other country code)
My watch :
Model number: SM-R815F
Serial: RFAN31FSY2E
SW version: R815FXXU1HVG1 SM-R815FZKABTU
Tizen version: 5.5.0.2
What have i done till now:
- developer mode on
-debug mode on
-download ODIN
-download SDK
-connected to watch via CMD
-tried launch_app csc-manager.csc-pre-configuration - getting an error " internal/external comand ... etc"
Now, being a total noob i don`t understand the next steps:
- do i need combination file and firmware rom for changing the region ?
- do i need to downgrade to tizen 4 in order to do something ? ( how to ?)
- where to find stock firmware - which one to choose because i found something that is paid and i don't want to waste money on something that is not working
Please if anybody can help me or give me a hint were to start it will be much appreciated.
Thank you,
A
Code:
COMBINATION-FT40_R815FXXU1ATA1.tar.md5
Risk because untested...
ATA1 could be dangerous outdated...
No idea from where to download this file... for free...
I will do some search...
Best Regards
Thanks for the feedback. i will wait for your findings.
Hi,
Sorry for being so impatient But did you find something?
Thank you,
A
Sorry.
I have nearly nothing on my HDDs... only really old files.
My suggestion for you.
Search for Firmware Files in Internet...
You can post here what you found. BEFORE you try,,,
For instance start with this file:
Code:
COMBINATION-FT40_R815FXXU1ATA1.tar.md5
Sorry I have my own problems and limited time and energy...
So you at your own...
Good Luck.
Best Regards
You searched for SM-R815 - CombinationFirmware.com
combinationfirmware.com
Here seems only older...
You searched for SM-R815 - Samsung Combination File
samsungcombinationfile.com
Here seems no F...
Found via Google...
I finally made it work thank to user: Jon199102 on Reddit.
He point me to a "hidden feature" of Galaxy Wearables - hidden menu to activate QR code searching/integrating -> auto or manually set up the ESIM. after enabling it i scan my qr code from VDF Ro and 10 minutes later everything was working
I don't really know if it is allowed to post the link to Reddit but here it goes :
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyWatch/comments/qqip1p
Thank you adfree for your time and knowledge sharing. helped me also in understanding a little bit the region change
Thanks
