Just got a Redmi Note 8 Pro with Global ROM and discovered that call recording won't work due to Google/Android Pie limitations.
After some searching, I found (on this forum) that the Indonesia ROM supports call recording on this phone.
Here are my questions:
1. Will burning a different ROM affect my warranty?
2. Will I lose any functionality by switching from Global to Indonesia ROM, and if so, what? Specifically, will NFC functionality be affected?
3. If I ever do a factory reset, will the phone revert to Global ROM?
4. I found the Indonesia ROM files here. There are three files called Recovery, OTA, and Fastboot. Do I need them all? If so, do they need to be burned in any specific order?
5. Where can I find complete instructions for burning the Indonesia ROM? I am new to Xiaomi, and the last time I burned a ROM to a phone was 5 years ago (Samsung); I don't remember anything, so I'd like instructions that assume nothing and don't skip any steps (instructions for intelligent dummies). I found these instructions for installing TWRP, but there's nothing about what to do next, and there's a list of pre-requisites with no explanations (Unlocked Bootloader, Phone Drivers, ADB and Fastboot Drivers), making the instructions insufficient for a noob like me.
Thanks much.

Hey,
Before going any further you first need to make sure what region is your phone. Is it a Chinese phone (bought from AliExpress for example) or a real Global phone (bought from a local store/official retail). Because you could very well own a Chinese phone shipped with a Global Rom flashed on it and this could result in some problems for you in terms of what you can do with it and how you can do it.
If you bought/received a phone with already unlocked bootloader, you should return it.
Unlocking bootloader should only be done by you when you need it.
1. Technically unlocking bootloader, ESSENTIAL step prior flashing anything, void your warranty.
However and that's what is interesting, if at some point you decide to flash back your original region rom (here Global) and lock back bootloader, none will know but Xiaomi servers you once unlocked this device certainly not a local reseller. So in term of warranty you should be safe, that is of course unless you brick your phone doing stuff you were not supposed to do with a locked bootloader if you are following.
2. If not mistaking, I think you loose NFC. Indian phones for sure do not have NFC at all, for their version, the chip was replaced with a 2nd SIM card tray (not shared). Not sure if you read the functionality afterward using rooted tricks.
3. No that does not work this way. When you are running a Rom, any version, if you factory reset that room, you just return to installation screen of that given Rom.
To return to Global Rom, you will need to reflash that Global Rom using the same method you did successfully flashing the Indonesian Rom (or any other rom) for example.
Would be wise to first download the exact version of the Rom you are currently using on your phone for archives purpose (BURN IT on good quality medias!) to revert back to it when/if needed. You can also archives OTA updates of that version you may not have taken yet to apply them manually if you ever revert back to that Global Rom and want to.
4. Different versions depends on what you are doing. In your case Fastboot version is what you need at the moment. You can find all different kind of versions of Roms for your RN8PRO on that site
As for the way to flash them, order and everything, you will need to look for guides online,
I dont think any order matters, just make sure to flash them all before rebooting disconnecting device. But if you are unsure of what you are doing, you'd be probably best using a tool such as MiFlash.
5. Here you can find one from the MIUI community website guiding you through the use of MiFlash to flash a stock Rom on your device.
Just note you do not have to use any tools to flash the .images of all partitions, you can easily doing it from command line using fastboot flash command one after an other.
Also note that installing TWRP is usually not needed to flash stock Roms (unlike flashing custom roms). Trying to mess up with the recovery partition is actually what seem to brick most of the devices.
However please note UNLOCKING your BOOTLOADER is MENDATORY.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
doesnt matter if you switch to any rom variant .i have switched mine to indonesian ,europe and indian and alll worked fine execpt indian version felt a bit laggy .just download the fastboot version of the rom and flash it through mi flash tool xiaomiflash .your bootloader needs to be unlocked and dont forget to check cleann all button in mi flash and dont check clean and lock
I have got global version and changed imei with unlocked bootloader. Can i flash indonesian rom without lose f my imei?
Thanks in advance for your answers
Muad.Dib,
Thanks for your detailed reply.
If I understand correctly, unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty just the same as rooting the phone, so if all I want is to get call recording, I may as well just root the phone and save the bother of flashing a different ROM.
Does that make sense to you, or do you see any advantage to flashing a different stock ROM instead of just rooting the phone? From past experience I've seen that rooting has additional benefits anyway.
BTW, I bought my phone on Banggood. It was advertised as Global ROM, and that appears to be what it has. As soon as I turned the phone on it updated to MIUI Global 11.0.2.1; I don't know what version it was before the update.

You're welcome, I am happy if I was useful to you in any kind of ways.
Well yes and no. Yes apparently you 'could' achieve call recording when rooted (yet I still fail doing so even if I installed the default MUI apps module I got from Telegram group. The setting to automatic recording is set to on yes, but I dont see recordings in the supposed destination folder nor I can see a simple button to record any voicecall I used to have on older versions of Android. Me failing to make it work - I did not try very hard to be honest - does not mean you cannot find someone who succeeded into doing so in that telegram group for RN8PRO).
That said it would not be a 'native' solution, just a patch/workaround. If it works well great, if not, well...
On an other hand by flashing to a Rom which does support it natively, well you are covered for the use you need.
So the advantage I see (with the included disadvantages) is better support for the function which is not supported for privacy reasons en Glob/EU market.
Does that come at a price?
Probably.
For example are you ready to trade off NFC for native call recording support? That may be a choice you have to make in the end. Again that said, if you root your phone on that new Rom, install NFC drivers manually as root (I see no reasons why that would not be possible after all) you may be able to patch NFC on that other Rom since unlike Indonesians market phone, you do have NFC hardware.
For example, myself, I wish I could have made that kind of bargain/trade off, giving up that NFC feature I have no need for, to get 8GB or Ram + 2x Sims + SD and not an hybrid tray. Unfortunately that's not the kind of trade I could make here in EU unless I would have ordered directly from Amazon.in (assuming that would have been possible) or third party website, but that was not possible for warranty reasons among other things.
Hope this helps.

Yes it does as it is officially available in every variant expect indian variant.
UPDATE:
I finally had the time to test the MIUI-default-apps Magisk module available for download on Telegram group, originally made for MIUI 11.0.1.0, and it works properly on MIUI 11.0.2.0 EEA. Does not require changing Rom.
Hope this helps.
Well, I have finally started the process, but got stymied by the Bootloader Unlock tool (Couldn't unlock. Please unlock 168 hours later.). Quite frustrating. I see that a lot of people have this problem and had to try again more than once, waiting a week between attempts.
Is there a workaround or do I just have to wait a week and hope for the best?
Also, assuming all goes well and I eventually manage to unlock the bootloader and flash the Indonesia ROM, do I use the same tool to re-lock the bootloader (in order to restore the security of the phone)?
And if I want to unlock again in the future, will I again possibly get the "wait and try again next week" message, or does that only happen the first time?
Thanks.

No workaround, you just have to wait (and yes I know how freaking frustrating it was for me...). You can even start meditation classes meanwhile it helps

It depends on what your the flavor of the phone you got. You may want to have a look at that other thread Relock bootloader after flashing ROM Indonesia where we actually covered this exact subject
The good thing about that 7 days wait period is you can gather all the intel you need to be 100% ready when the time come to seriously mess up with things.
So you know, once your bootloader is unlocked, first thing you will want to do BEFORE anything else, is blow off that security which needed Auth Account to unbrick account (ONLY WORKS FOR PIE, ANDROID 9 MIUI VERSION BEWARE).
All information is here: [GUIDE][INFO][PSA] Redmi Note 8 Pro - Megathread

The waiting time is for one time only (THANKS GOD!).
So if you relock, beside having to get your hands on the unlock tool once again and have added the same infos as for the first time in the phone, you will be able to unlock right away.
That's at least a good news
Hope this helps,

Yes of course.
It is a module you can find on the Telegram group called "Redmi Note 8 Pro | OFFICIAL".
Like me you will have to go in there even if you do not use Telegram.
Once there and you got the /notes it is called the default apps.
I cannot share it myself here because I am not the developer of that module, as you can understand that's against forums policies.
All I can tell you is it works correctly on EEA MIUI 11.0.2.0.
Good luck!
Hope this helps.

I have disovered that there are different NGC protocols and that my Redmi Note 8 Pro does not read NFC cards of some protocols. I'm wondering if it might not be a driver issue. where would I look for NFC drivers?

Hey,
Sorry was AFK for a while. In case you still need answer, going to reply just in case.
Well there is not much to add, you simply install the module from within Magisk once it installed, you reboot, and it works out of the box, you go in the settings and you set it as you like.
Good luck!
Do i need to root before installing it ?

Well let me explain this question, i bought this device in aliexpress cause i live in mexico, so, my device version is the chinese (this for the network compatibility).
when the new software version roll out i downloaded in the realme web i tried to install it. But i was not able to, so i unlocked the bootloader to try some custom roms, i install the recovery TWRP , and then i downloaded the pixwel experience, before installing i checked and the realme ui update was released, so i tried to install it, but i couldn't cause i had the bootloader unlocked and the custom recovery.
Next thing i did was install the stock recovery, and then i locked again the bootloader, but now the cellphone dont start, it only shows the screen of "The current image (boot/recovery) have been destroyed and can not boot. Please flash the correct image or contact customer service to fix it" .
The problem here is, the recovery dont start and the fastboot its locked and i can't bypass that.
I'm looking for a solution, but i want to know if anyone have solve this before or have any idea to do it. Thanks guys!
well it happened to me same the only way is to take it to realme service center or finde some one who have the oppo realme server to flash it like i did ifound a guy who have an official server the flash my device am from algeria

i´ve been "searching" (not too much to be honest) a way to flash my device, or even easier, to unlock the bootloader, once that is done, i will be able to do the next thing.
There are ways to "force" flashing modifying the hardware (i really don't want to that), other places suggest flashing a vbmeta.img, but i get back to the same, i need the bootloader
im actualy downloading UFI android tool, any update i will post it

I think EDL mode flashing stock ROM is a good way, but is there compatible download tool or image? I have ever used Miflash to downgrade my bootloader locked Xiaomi 4c for unlocking bootloader in EDL mode (maybe "fasboot oem edl" ,"fastboot reboot-edl", or "fastboot reboot edl" command).

did u get the solution bro
Not yet, i have some steps to do it, but now im facing the last step, the file don´t get recognized by the tool, this tool ask for a scatter file, and the one with QFIL, i need a xml firehose fle, and i havent found it
did u get the solution bro[/QUOTE]
What i got is this:
Emergency download: press vol + and vol - then connect it to the pc, the pc will recognize it as port 9008 com in the device manager of your pc, if yor phone reboots u have to disconnect the battery cause the battery forces the reboot of the EDL mode, maybe if you put the phone on EDL mode an then quickly flash would work with out tearing appart the device
Files: you need to install qualcomm drivers (https://gsmusbdrivers.com/download/android-qualcomm-usb-driver/), download the .ofp file of your device (i get if from here https://oppostockrom.com/oppo-realme-x-rmx1901 ), then you need to download the tool you will use
here is where things are gonna get a bit harder
MSMDownload: this is the official tool, it came withe ofp file from the link i put before, the proble is you need a user and password, i haven't found where to get one official, its from oppo workers i guess
There is a cracked version, but don't recognizes the file
QFIL: its for qualcom devices (found it here https://androidmtk.com/download-qualcomm-flash-image-loader-qfil), this will let you flash every qualcomm device (or thats what they tell you), it shows the port, but ask for a xml file and a programer path (thing that i haven't found it yet)
Cracked MSMDownload: i found this https://www.techoxygen.com/msm-download-tool/ , https://romprovider.com/2020/02/flash-qualcomm-devices-using-msm-download-tools/, or this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CKsEOfGGaQ
now, in my case the file its not recognized, it says incorrect scatter file, from here you can start diggin around, if you solve this please let me know

Weird screen behavior, it seem to me that it isn't a hardware fault, cause when plugging in a charger the phone is able to show the MI logo, but not the charging icon
The phone is able to boot and i can hear the phone locking and unlocking, can see that the screen is on because of the backlight, but there is no image, SO FRUSTRATING!!
If you have any idea of what's going on and can give me a tip, i would thank you so much, the phone has been on this state for a long time
Don't know how to upload videos, if you think that can help diagnose it i can upload it and share a link or something

If you have any idea of what's going on and can give me a tip, i would thank you so much, the phone has been on this state for a long time
Don't know how to upload videos, if you think that can help diagnose it i can upload it and share a link or something

I hadnt updated my Rom, Pixel experience, in a while, so i took the opportunity and flashed an (at the time) beta Pixel Experience Android 10, i reverted and everything was fine for about one day i think, then some artifacting wich would come and go until the display gived up completly (about an hour between the two)
Yes, it is unlocked, and when in fastboot/recovery the screen is lighted up but not showing anything
My guess is that i have a low level firmware issue, as i had problem with those before (was running a custom ROM from day 1, so i had to manually update firware to use newer versions of PE (still pie version) and almost bricked my device

Then try the next:
- Flash a different vendor.
- Flash a different kernel.
- Revert to stock ROM, no need to lock or nothing, just flash first the recovery ROM but if it doesn't result then flash the fastboot ROM through EDL, so that you know you can boot to EDL mode without need to open the back cover, this will restore all the original images.

You can flash some images invoking the right partition, I mean, you can flash vendor image onto the vendor partition using
Code:
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
, and in case you need to flash all the ROM you should use MiFlash tool

I actually want to check that, i took the phone to a tecnitician and he may have locked the bootloader
I think the next step would be flashing the vendor, firmwares and stock rom again, right?

if your bootloader is locked, you can't flash through fastboot mode either vendor or stock ROM, you should need to use EDL method or you can re-unlock bootloader and this way will work. Anyway i don't understand what actually your issue is.

The issue is the display not working, and it's gotta be a firmware issue as it's on my desk right now showing a bunny, also i am not used to fastboot flash anything, i just was used to recoveries and what not
Just runned some code and it's locked, this is getting better and better oh boy
How am i gonna unlock this if i can't even unlock the phone? last time with screen working it was already a nightmare, having to wait for miui account, do i have any method of doing this without using EDL?

Well, this make sense although it's not clear if you did unlock it previously and after that at some time you did lock it again.
If you didn't unlock it previously you would need to bind your Mi account to the device and enable USB debugging and OEM unlock options but if you didn't before without a screen working you have a more difficult way, confirm me if that is the case.
Anyway I got happily surprised when I bought this device some months ago at the first attempt I could unlock it without have to wait time, try it and see what happen.

It was unloked and i locked again, don't know if this helps my case or if i am royally screwed up
And yeah, Xioami does make difficult to do the process of unlocking but only to recently released devices, aparently to stop re-sellers to buy the cheaper chinese rom and put the global version on them, i think that when a device doenst get made anymore makes sense that they would make it more easy (i bought the device 2 weeks after launch)

Ok, of course this makes a huge difference, if you did unlock it previously then you couldn't receive any wait time, I wonder why you didn't try it if you didn 't. Check if MiUnlock tool unlock your device instantly.

Hmm, OK, now you have your way sorted out, you can try with a custom ROM (all of them contain a vendor) or in case a custom ROM doesn't solve it you have to try a stock ROM through Mi Flash tool.

Ok, but how am i gonna flash a rom with fastboot? Is that a thing?
Also, i don't think the vendor is gonna be my only problem, but also the firmware, is there a way to flash firmware without the recovery and trough fastboot?

You can't be sure of that, sometimes the vendor correct the issue, sometimes the firmware.
Firmware it is in the stock ROM that can be flashed either through fastboot or EDL mode (be careful to not relock bootloader or you couldn't enable this time OEM unlock option). Now that you have the way more clear just do a search "how to flash stock ROM on Xiaomi devices either through fastboot or EDL mode", just keep in mind that you don't need to open the back cover of the device, usually from a device off (only on unlocked ones) you could send it to EDL by pressing both volume buttons at same time that it is connected to PC, I gave you the main tips, for the rest you will find a lot of tutorials.
Hello,
The Xiaomi 9 SE Global Unlocked of my girlfriend was restarting a lot (restart loop) and I tried to flash a ROM but I accidentaly flashed and locked the mobile on a "MIUI version that can´t be installed on this device" (grus_global_images_V12.0.2.0.QFBMIXM_20200910.0000.00_10.0_global)
The problem is the phone was wiped and I cant unlock the phone now. What to do? I can´t flash another ROM or unlock it and I just have access to Recovery Mode and Fastboot mode.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated.
It´s 4 am where I live and I´ll go to bed... But Will read here as soon as I´m awake. Thanks a lot in advance.
Let me continue my story... I still need help.
I contacted an authorized and he helped me to EDL a flashed version and I reinstalled the MIUI 12.0.2 Global stable on the phone.
But the phone is still TURNING OFF BY ITSELF (this was the reason because I tried flashing it on the first place). I don´t know the cause but it does not seems to be a faulty battery. I heard the phone has Anti RollBack protection. Is it right?
So I need help on how to procced. I would like to RollBack it to MIUI 11 where I didn´t had this problems...
Unfortunately you can NEVER go back once you flash a ROM on Xiaomi devices. However that doesn't prevent you from flashing custom ROMs.
Though you still need to be careful, because once flashed there is no going back.
I recommend testing the ROM on an emulator before flashing it. Here is how.
Also don't forget to check for your rollback protection index and the ROM's index before flashing.
Follow this post and scroll down to "How to find rollback index of images".

But isn't the phone already on a stock rom? But that it's rooted? Or is it running an aftermarket rom like Lineage? Look in settings, software version to find out.
You can relock the boot-loader, but before trying to do that, you have to be running 100% stock, no modifications to the rom whatsoever. I've done that but have only attempted it after using lgup to flash a complete stock rom.
To re-lock it you have to use the engineering abl and qfil to flash it, then go directly to fastboot, re-lock, then use fastboot one last time to flash the original abl back.
look in the guides section to get an idea of how to do above.

I don't think there's an easy way to determine that, at least not be 100% positive of it. What I would do is a factory reset first, but that doesn't guarantee everything will then be 100% stock.
If you're not comfortable trying to re-lock bl after that, then use lgup to flash the stock firmware. That would be my preferable way to do it.
There are, in the guides section, threads on how to do these things. Good luck. But lesson learned though right? Don't buy a phone with unlocked boot loader if you want to use banking apps and have no use for root. Hopefully it will turn out to be a good learning experience though.
Thank for you replying. I thoughts this Android 10 on this phone was modified, it wasn't recognized on LGUP. Next time I should avoid for rooted phone

Looks to me like you don't have lgup / drivers setup properly. So I'd guess you've never had lgup setup for any other lg phone before? And your error isn't because of the software on the phone, but because of the setup?
Look in the guides forum and you'll find some that show how to setup and use lgup. It's a bit complicated because different versions have different purposes, but it looks to me your device is running basic US Cellular rom, and there's really nothing you can do with root that would make that 'unrecognizable' by lgup.
