Hi. I have a problem with counting the distance traveled by my watch; my watch is Watch Active 2, when I activate the walking workout option, if I get in the car and drive on the route, that amount is added to the route For example, if I work 7 km and drive 2 km, 9 km will show me walking activity and it will not stop automatically.
?! Excuse me for bad English

Trying to get an answer to this question, but nobody seems to know the answer so far.
I'll buy the Oribit if it can do the following:
a) be used whilst walking in e.g. central London to help me find my way to various full postcode locations/streets (i.e. held in hand, easy to read display)
b) ideally, also be able to be kept hidden in inside pocket, with verbal instructions coming via bluetooth headset.
I noticed in one forum that b) was ruled a problem, as apparently e.g. WM5 does not allow audio such as TomTom instructions to be sent to a bluetooth headset??
I think, that Bluetooth is not the problem... I think, it will work.
But: GPS with device in your Pocket won't work.
Cable-Headset works fine, Bluetooth Headset not (at least mine).
Running TomTom in your jacket or rucksack is no problem.
But using TomTom for walking is not very good - even when you switch it to the "Walking mode". If you walk slow, it doesn't really know what dircetion you are walking and the map is rotating very often.
hi
i Used TT in london last year device in pocket worked a treat don't know about stability of map as it was in my pocket most of the time and used a wired headset. just had to view map ocassionally to get an idea of the general direction i was heading.
Thanks people,
Varied answers! - maybe due to different models?
"even when you switch it to the "Walking mode". - oh well, good to hear it actually has a 'walking mode'
"bluetooth" - I believe someone mentioned some issue whereby (forgive me for vagueness) WM generated sounds could not be sent via Bluetooth (but obviously phone or music audio could). Yes, I was confused as well...
Yes - it has a walking mode. But that mode is for the way how TomTom calculates the route - e.g. pedestrian areas, oneway streets.
Another thing is - in large cities the device will find less satellites due to high houses around you. That's another point why it sometimes does't know what direction you are walking. That was my experience in Boston last year.
I use memory map 5 with the Orbit and I think that's exactly what you want. I have the full london A-Z and using the GPS can pin point my position. I also have ordinance survey maps for kent and sussex which are great for walks.
When you connect the orbit back to your PC, memory map will download your route to the PC and display it within the 'main' memory map software.
GPS Walking
I've bougth HTC Artemis recently and used it in the labirinth of Venice Italy. I thought I couldn't use it but I managed to use it.
Surprisingly it could find the position. I mean surprisingly if you know that the streets in Venice are 3 meters large, at best, and the surroundings houses never lower then 12-15 meters.
Yes, it's a problem for TomTom to find the direction where you're going but, if you ask to see the graphical demo of the calculated route, you can easily go where you want. You're looking at a freezed map showing the next connection, turnout or whatever. As soon as you've reached it you can press the skip of next button to see next istruction. More on this, while you look at the graphical demo of the route, you get the vocal messages.
Bye
thanks, all interesting especially memory map 5 by the sound of it!
Memory Map is great for walking but it will not give you spoken commands as to where you need to go, it is a topographical map (it looks the same as the paper map you would purchase from an outdoors/ camping style shop) but its in electronic format displayed on the PDA screen with current position displayed. You can set waypoints to offer a vector, distance and time to go to reach the destination - great out on the fells but limited in cities to be honest.
If you want spoken instructions TomTom or Route 66 work great on the Artemis, both can display the map in 2D mode which is easier to interpret when walking - Mike
I have BT GPS. I am looking for a simple GPS app, which can tell me arial distance (so no maps needed) from my location to particular point (longi/latitude). Also it can store a point when asked for.
I want to mark my car's parking point. Then use phone and my BT GPS to go towards the car. That is all.
Any pointer ? thanks
I am amazed that no body replied to post. Looks like I am the only one using GPS with eexcalibur. Anyway here is the info.
I am using BT-339 GPS with bluetooth. It works very well without any problem. Since the connection is bluetooth, you can keep GPS in you backpack or pocket and excalibur will have wireless connection to GPS. No wires hanging out .
I installed "Pocket Street" which came in my MS Street and Trip 2006 CD. I exported map from MS Street and Trip 2007 on my laptop and copied to SD card. Pocket street picks up map and shows location right where I am driving with dynamically updating my position exactly like my TomTom GPS. It does not have turn-by-turn direction, but I do not need those any way. For directions I have TomTom. The map is excellent, which I like much better than TomTom. The resolution is excellent, with all the builtin POIs etc. The map of whole state (right to fullest zoom in) fits in 6 MB to 30 MB. 30 MB for large state like Texas, and 6 MB for smaller states. Pocket street do not have any learning curve. Another advantage is that you do not need, data connection for maps . A big plus, since I do not have unlimited data.
Also I found NoniGPSPlot which can work without maps and you can mark where you parked your car. Then the progy shows the distance and position of your car relative to your current position. This is what I was looking for. The app has about 30 minute to 1 hr learning curve, but when you get how to use, you will be amazed with it usefulness. The position and distance gets updated as you wale towards/away from your makred car parking postion.
No one replied because this topic has been covered many times, thats why the forum has this nifty SEARCH feature, perhaps you should give it a whirl at some point its really fascinating:

Bupahs, thanks for pointing me to search. I did searched the answer. And I did looked at all the messages you pointed to. But all of those require maps. And all of those need maps to work with. Also the smartphone version do not allow to record a point (i.e to mark and remember parking poistion of car). And if they allow, they do not allow the point to be off road (i.e. in parking lot). Hence I needed a solution which does not use maps, because any app which uses maps do not allow points to be off road.
Thanks.

Efficasoft GPS Utilities, I think that may be what your looking for. Its not free however... PM me
I ride long distances on my motorcycle and I'm trying to find a GPS tracking APP that will allow my wife to follow where I'm at on my trips.
Any advise on an APP would be greatly appreciated.
You should give Realtime GPS Tracker a try. It really works well.

OK, so I haven't tried it, but I just came across Google Tracks the other day and I think it will do what you want:
Record and share your GPS tracks with My Tracks.
My Tracks records your path, speed, distance, and elevation while you walk, run, bike, or do anything else outdoors. While recording, you can view your data live, annotate your path, and hear periodic voice announcements of your progress.
With My Tracks, you can share your GPS tracks and stats online:
- Via Google+, Facebook, or Twitter
- Using Google Maps, Google Fusion Tables, or Google Docs
- As a GPX, KML, CSV, or TCX file
My Tracks uses the GPS sensor in your phone to record geographic and velocity statistics, but the app also syncs with third-party biometric sensors, including:
- Zephyr HxM Bluetooth heart rate monitor
- Polar WearLink Bluetooth heart rate monitor
- ANT+ heart rate and speed distance monitors (these require an ANT+ compatible phone)
My Tracks is an open source project. If you like to contribute, please visit:
http://mytracks.googlecode.com
The only thing is that with Tracks, you have to upload your tracking data to share. With the other, anyone you authorize can go online and see your tracking and location.
I haven't tried that many but I like "Instamapper GPS Tracker". It allows users to see your location and speed via a webpage. Here is a demo:

problems of using gps tracking app for smart phones
I used gps app in my smart phone . i have faced problem for using gps app.the problem is GPS use can take a big slice out of battery life. On newer big-screen smartphones, which already struggle to last a day, frequent use of GPS tracking can reduce endurance to a few hours. Is their any alternate solution.
not sure if is right place to ask, but as far as i know sony watch is the only with build id GPS
i would like to know what app can i use to track my walk and as offline map that works without phone
i can use 2 different apps
how long can i expect the watch battery to last with those features?
what i need to do is track my walking days during my vacations and use the map without phone
You can use google my tracks and/or google fit as activity tracker. Also runkeeper and others are availabe with support for sony smartwatch 3 gps. For off line maps use osm city maps.
Enjoy
I think backcountry navigator has offline capability, but I have not tested that function yet.
Hello,
I was looking into a feature that can somehow broadcast the heart rate of the mi band 4. Broadcasting is different than normal heart rate tracking because it sends a ble packet containing the HR value and other peripherals receive the data without pairing. This is useful in more than one scenario:
1. I use a bike computer but it cannot see my mi band 4 (as factory made), lacking the broadcast feature it cannot be detected by the bike computer
2. at the gym, maybe you have a treadmill and it can receive the hr trough broadcast.
I found this app, https://github.com/WebBluetoothCG/ble-test-peripheral-android ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.webbluetoothcg.bletestperipheral ) that my bike computer can see the HR emulator. I was wondering how can this be made to communicate with each other, or another way if it is possible.
A scenario:
1. start biking activity - we have the heart rate
2. I used Notify and Fitness and in tasker I could get the hr value http://mibandnotify.com/help/tasker_send_intent.php (sadly tasker does not have yet the ble broadcast feature)
3. Is it possible to make an app that does exactly this thing? Like get the HR from the mi band and using the code in ble-test-peripheral-android emulate a HR sensor on the phone that broadcasts the value.
Other solutions are welcomed,
thanks.

Having Tasker support for BLE would be nice and is probably also interesting for other use cases. Maybe ask on r/tasker if the wanted feature is already possible to do with Tasker and if not put up a feature request on tasker.helprace.com. I'm sure Mi Band 4 users like myself will vote for it.
