This guide teaches you to reverse tether your Android phone via WiFi. That is, it allows you to use your Ethernet connection of PC on your Android phone. It is useful for those who do not have WiFi routers and data connection. So if you have unlimited data plan for your computer, why not share the connection with your phone?
Notice: Backup your phone if you need to, I must not be held responsible for any damage to your phone. The following procedure works perfectly on stock ROM. Moreover, I am not a developer of the files supplied, I just got the files from the internet.
Credits to the actual authors of these files (Yet unknown to me). I have only contributed by coming up with a proper procedure and configuration for this.
Requirements:
Rooted phone
WiFi enabled Laptop (e.g. Dell Inspiron 15 series)
Root Explorer OR any other application that allows you to access entire system and also copy paste system files.
View attachment wpa_supplicant.zip
Procedure:
Phone:
Download Wpa_supplicant.zip and extract "wpa_supplicant" from it, save it on your SD card.
Open Root Explorer, and grant it superuser access when asked for.
Navigate to system -> bin and long press on wpa_supplicant; Select copy, and paste the file into any folder on your SD card.
Now navigate to the file you downloaded, copy it in same way, and paste it back to system -> bin. Note, you might need to mount the system as R/W instead of R/O by pressing a button on the top just before pasting the file.
Reboot.
Ubuntu (Must work for other Linux Distros too):
Open Network Connections
Goto Wireless tab, select add, and set the following:
SSID: <Any_name_you_like>
Mode: Ad hoc
Leave other things unchanged, and go to Ipv4 settings tab
Set method to Shared to other computers
Go to Wireless security tab and set Security to WEP 40/128 bit key and set key to a numeric password (or hexadecimal one).
Check the connect automatically box on top of the tabs and press Save.
Your Android phone must now detect this network, and you can establish the connection by using your security key.
Windows XP, Vista, 7
Download and Install Connectify from www . connectify.me/download-lite/
Start Connectify Hotspot by giving a name and password to your hotspot and selecting the Ethernet connection to share. Make sure the security type is WEP or Open.
Disable your firewall (Simply adding it to exceptions doesn't work for AVG at least)
Now your phone should be able to see the hotspot and establish the connection using the password set.
Known Issues:
Random disconnections (Very less frequency)
Disconnections due to screen lock / sleep on laptop

Well, I tried to search for similar posts, found none, and so thought of writing one myself. I followed the links from your signature and read your post. Just edit it and write that it does work with secured connections At least it worked for me with the wpa_supplicant attached in this post. And in this post I elaborated a little more on configuration at desktop because in Windows (especially my Vista), there were several problems with Ad hoc mode sharing, and it only worked with Connectify for me. I guess I might have not configured it properly then, and just wanted to share something that worked for me. And then I tried doing Ad hoc mode on Ubuntu, which never worked until the passkey was set to 40/128 bit WEP security.

Well, I want you to use your wpa_supplicant, and disable firewall and try to connect in a secure way, I am sure, it has to work. I guess the blog-post that I referred to (for downloading the file) must have been made using your post. Try it once and let me know
Also let me know if you have disconnections For me, I experience 2 to 3 disconnections when trying to connect to a WiFi router, and no disconnections while connecting to Ad Hoc N/w. So if we could collaborate and get some solution to it, it would be great!
I don't have any firewall and I have tried that. not working. btw, I made that post to fix wifi problem. the adhoc connection is just a bonus. I haven't check your wpa_suplicant, it could be different with mine. there's possibility that your wpa_suplicant support secure connection but mine simply doesn't support it.

Possible. I had once come across a source file for wpa_supplicant, in some forum. I'll send you a link of the same if I get it once again, and then may be we could try to figure out how we could have both the things (Secure + Reliable ad hoc)

Did you use the wpa_supplicant attached in this post, or did you obtain the file from any other source? Plus, have you disabled your antivirus firewall (if any)?
If your answer is yes to above questions, wait till it shows disconnected/remembered and then, turn off your wifi, turn it back on, and redo this about 2 to 3 times if problem exists. The problem you mentioned happens only during handshaking (initialization), and once you are connected, there is hardly any chance that you would get disconnected.

xD Yes yes indeed, connectify works like charm, but only on Windows 7 (as it allows virtual router mode in Win7) but to use it with XP and Vista, we need this wpa_supplicant work around. And reverse tether with USB exists already, plus there are a few issues that prevent us to download apps from market, and stuff like that due to tunneling issues...

How can you call it a 'reverse tether'?
Its more like ICS over WiFi.
Using Connectify,you create an access point (aka hotspot).

Well, as I already said, Connectify creates access point only on Win7 (that too if there is hardware for it), on other OSes, it creates ad hoc network, which Android phones do not detect. And it is called reverse tether, because you are using your PC's ethernet connection on your WiFi (the ethernet connection is shared with your phone over WiFi). Virtual router also works well for Win7, not for other OSes, and this was the only work around that actually worked.

I am looking for help to resolve basically the only issue I have not been able to figure out through these great forums or otherwise.
It seems that getting the tablet to work with an AdHoc network is not yet possible. I have seen comments stating that it may be possible through CyanogenMod. Can anybody confirm this? Or has another way been discovered to allow us to connect to AdHoc wifi networks?
Otherwise, does anybody know how to get ALL apps to recognize the Bluetooth internet connection? I have a Verizon phone running FoxFi and I am thethering via PdaNet Tablet when using Bluetooth; using FoxFi and stock wifi connection for wifi. Some apps will recognize the internet connection while others will not. Is there some way to point all apps to the Bluetooth internet connection?

you need to recompile the kernel to add ibss to the wifi driver and recompile wpa_supplicant to recognize ad-hoc.
If you don't want to do this, most versions of aokp/cm will have it working.
if you are using foxfi, you shouldn't need to worry about ad-hoc

I may be falsely assuming that it is an ad-hoc issue just due to what I have read from others commenting on the issue (re: your comment about FoxFi).
I am going to start by trying one of the more recent CM nightly releases (cm-10.2-20131105-NIGHTLY-flo) and do a little research to see what is involved in recompiling the kernel to add ibss to the wifi driver and recompile wpa_supplicant to recognize ad-hoc and respond back.

Does Pdanet create a connection as a VPN or actual bluetooth tethering? If it's the former, there's the reason. I'm under the impression that apps will be able to properly understand a bluetooth internet connection (via bluetooth PAN I believe)

When I tested FoxFi it acted as a regular Access Point so normal wifi was all that was needed to connect.
Usually it is the WiFi Tether for Root app that sets of the phone as an ad-hoc connection, forcing the tablets connecting to it to also have ad-hoc support.

I truly don't know the answer to this. Can you provide some instructions on testing this theory? I have tried the app Bluetooth Auto Connect and set the connection up with the phone as a PAN connection. I can pair the phone and my n7 together, but the stock Bluetooth manager never shows the two as 'Connected' versus other Bluetooth devices. Any suggestions?

Then I think it must be a limitation with the LG VS660 phone that I'm using.
The good news is that the installation of CyanogenMod worked! What would have been intermittent connectivity every 5 minutes or so has now been turned into a solid wifi connection. Apps that would have rarely worked on the wifi connection are now working with no problems.
However, I am still very interested in figuring out the Bluetooth connectivity option. For those who may not want / like to go the CM route, it would be nice to have a simpler solution. Plus, my wife has a stock 2012 n7 and I would like to be able to get hers connected without rooting it. Any input on how to accomplish this would be great!
Howdy folks, I am looking to find out if there is a way to have Wifi show as active and the primary network connection when the FireTV is actually connected via Ethernet. Many apps, specifically streaming apps, require a wifi connection and will not run without it. I prefer to run my FireTV via Ethernet due to the environment mine is in.
This type of hack or workaround would also be useful for the Ouya and any other android device that has an Ethernet port.
To sum up, I am looking for a hack or workaround that will present the Ethernet connection as Wifi to the OS or applications.

This would benefit our android phones as many apps won't work over carrier network to avoid data overages. I got unlimited data and get better speeds from Verizon than I do at home. If it was an app, xposed module, or some other mod, I would pay for it.

A better way would be contacting the developers of that particular app and having them fix it, so that Ethernet is treated the same way as Wi-Fi.

It is only an assumption, but I am guessing that apps such as the Xfinity TV app by Comcast are setup that way so that people can not use devices such as the FireTV and the Ouya as a replacement for renting a set top box from them. Yes, I can get around this issue by going on wifi, but why use an worst connection method when there may be another way around it? Also Androids open environment is supposed to encourage the creation of alternative ways of doing things.
Looking through other threads, there appears to be a desire for an app that spoofs wifi for people who are also only on 4G or other wireless methods. Having an app on android that could spoof a wifi connection when you are 3G or 4G wireless would be just as useful for some people.

I can see the usefulness of such an app, but it would probably require a rooted device. As far as I know, Fire TV has not been rooted yet.
It has been rooted. But the method has not been shared yet. I believe he said it wasn't ready for release yet. Something along those lines. At any rate it will be eventually

I'm sure there may be something out there but honestly, I'm in a pinch and do not have time to search. I've always rooted my phone and purchased Foxfi for those times I do not have Wi-Fi on my laptop and need to do connect quickly. Today was one of those days as I needed to send a document, while I'm on vacation as I forgot to do it prior. I'm visiting my parents and they do not have internet (yes they are old school or as I call them... ancient) and could not connect my laptop. At times like this, Foxfi was my savior, into now when I went to turn it on my phone and I received a message that the app no longer works. Can anyone provide me with some background as to what happened and why? I'm running Android 8.1.0 / Oxygen 5.1.1 on my OnePlus 5. I've used the app before on this phone, so I know it use to work. Thank you.
Well, I don't know why it's not working, but why are you just not using the built in Portable Hotspot option? You can change the SSID, the password as well, you can do 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and there is a very convenient quick tile for turning on and off this hotspot.
You can find it by searching for "Tethering & portable hotspot" or by going to the Settings > Wireless & Network section: More > Tethering & portable hotspot.

I just tried FoxFi, and it's not working for me either, saying the my carrier might not support tethering, which is not true. It offered me to download PdaNet+, with a new version of tethering, "WiFi Direct Hotspot (new!)", and this application is working and it seems to keep the licence from FoxFi, so you'll not have to buy it again.

Look under Wi-Fi preferences for "Wi-Fi Direct". Is it not there? I don't have my P2 handy or I would check myself...but it is there on the the P3. I've never used it before but I see other peers in my house available to connect.
I don't have WiFi at home (digital divide problem) so I need to use my P2XL as router and device both at same time. Eg. to use my device with Chromecast

You asked about "Wi-Fi sharing" which is a different technology from using your phone as a hotspot where it uses your phone's cellular data to create a Wi-Fi hotspot your other devices can use. Is this what you are trying to accomplish? If so "tethering" is definitely an option IF your carrier and/or plan allow it. On many carriers it is plan-by-plan. If your plan is pre-pay it may not be available. There are ways to bypass the carrier tether checks but it requires root. Not sure if you can stream to Chromecast via tethering because I don't own one. Maybe someone else who does can confirm.

Tethering doesn't work unfortunately. Tried several times.
Because P3 allows WiFi sharing I thought it was possible in P2 too (but honestly no idea if it's HW or SW).

WiFi-Hotspot allows all your other devices to connect to the Internet by sharing your phone's mobile data; while WiFi-Sharing achieves that by sharing your phone's WiFi connection. Since you do not have Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi sharing is not an option for you, regardless of which Pixel you have. There are many tethering guides on how to modify your build.prop to bypass your carrier's tether checks. Which carrier are you on, and is it a pre-paid or post-paid plan? As your phone is rooted, you may also want to search XDA for enabling tethering depending on your specific carrier/plan. Best of luck! :good:

I do this exact same thing you are describing via tethering. I make my Pixel 2XL a hotspot, then connect chromecast to it. Then I can stream things from the same Pixel 2XL to the chromecast. The key is getting tethering to work.

If you cannot enable and setup a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone you DO have Vodafone tethering checks. It is Vodafone blocking you from using the tether function! The tethering function on your phone will use the phone's Wi-Fi radio to create a Wi-Fi hotspot and then you will have Wi-Fi to share with your other devices. You can do simple edit of your build.prop to bypass the restriction. If you are rooted, you likely have Magisk installed and there should still be a working tethering module that will do the job for you.

Ok suppose I've created WiFi hotspot and I'm sharing my WiFi with Chromecast, so how can also connect my phone to Chromecast if my phone is busy simulating WiFi router with Chromecast?
Here the graphics:

So Chromecast and my phone can communicate throw the same router, right?

I think one thing you are misunderstanding is that if you use your phone as a "hotspot" -- essentially you are making your phone a modem & router -- then wifi is actually forcefully turned off; therefore using any data connection other than the device's own (connection) is impossible [like another router/modem or data line]. Anyone who has successfully ran the device as a hotspot can attest to this...
I mean, it kinda makes sense... If the device has to receive a wifi signal, process the data throughout the internet, and send the corresponding data through the same wifi signal, then it'd be too busy & impossible for it to also be connecting the same wifi signal to send and receive to another source. As technology is now, it'd be crazy for a smartphone to have and employ more than 1 wifi radio or multiple wifi radios...There's really simply no need for it (right now at least...).

I mean, it kinda makes sense... If the device has to receive a wifi signal, process the data throughout the internet, and send the corresponding data through the same wifi signal, then it'd be too busy & impossible for it to also be connecting the same wifi signal to send and receive to another source. As technology is now, it'd be crazy for a smartphone to have and employ more than 1 wifi radio or multiple wifi radios...There's really simply no need for it (right now at least...).
