Android S beta 1 on TaimenThis is a clear build from the official source code with some fixes. GIS doesn't work on Taimen, so I compiled it from source code.
What works?
Bluetooth,
WiFi,
sound,
camera,
flashlight,
fingerprint,
GPS,
WebGL in browser
Auto-rotate
What doesn't work?
IMS (you can't type phone number),
SIM status is "Not available",
cgroups - there may be problems with user isolation (not-tested),
bpf_create_map in LibBpfLoader always fails (I don't know what the side effects may be, it can't load test.o, offload.o, time_in_state.o, clatd.o, gpu_mem.o, netd.o)
DownloadClick here to download
How I did it?Read the README.md - you have a step-by-step guide. I hope this will be used to create other ROM with gapps and some other improvements. I don't know how to fix SIM status, so if u know please tell me.

HI! nice job building this. i installed it and it boots but nothing here looks like android 12 (S) i see the version number but nothing else looks like it should.
A really great job! To get all the news of Android 12 you would need a port of the Pixel GSIs. That would be really cool!
Can you post the specific points of the tutorial, but I don’t understand it. Do you want to operate on a virtual machine?
Thanks! I ran Android S in AVD, but still, I don't have all the news. I think there are currently a lot of changes in API, but not visually (except rectangles in settings). They didn't change PlatLogoActivity (easter egg when you click Android version). I don't know why volume control is not changed and scroll animation, it's in SystemUI, but they aren't any commits in their repository.

I compiled it on Ubuntu 20 and flashed physical device. Which points are not understood? You need to add device/google/taimen and dependencies, vendors, fix hal_oemlock_default, bpfloader and cgroups2. If u have trouble with any specific step u can DM me.
Good work on this. I am still using my pixel as my primary device. I will definitely test this once it becomes stable.
Excellent Job
looking forward for a fully working stable rom of Android 12 cause its really huge update and sad that pixel 2 xl is not anymore supported
Big thanks to the OP dev for the effort!
Can't believe our phone is already dead and there are no more devs on the fight for stable Android 12 on Pixel 2 XL.
The hope dies last!!!

Patience is a virtue my friend. I'm sure most of the Dev's are waiting for Google to release the source code (later this year) so they start cooking and baking their masterpieces.
PS: Taimen is far from being dead.
Is there any news about beta 2?

Saw some mention the other day in passing somewhere, that quite a lot is still borked and needs more work
A 12 Beta 3 dropped today.
Android 12 Beta 2.1 rolling out with Pixel bug fixes
The latest Android 12 Beta from the start of this month is widely considered to have regressed on stability. Android 12 Beta 2.1 today...

android 12 gsi is now working on taimen, but we still have a call issue.
now source switch to android 13

Tiramisu is 13 though.
Yes! Didn't notice that. But let's get 12 working on Taimen first
you can go to https://flash.android.com/ and choose aosp master with phones, there are aosp s from nov 2020 for pixel 2 xl, before taimen was drop support
How exactly does this get A12 on Taimen?

A few years ago, I have been building Mackay ROM, based on CyanogenMod for a number of devices. Due to being busy at work, I have stopped with that. I recently picked it up with again with a Mackay ROM based on LineageOS.
It is actually LineageOS, with a few extras that I always miss:
-SU build into the ROM
-No hash sign when using SU
-Network traffic speed option for statusbar
-OMS Substratum theming
-OmniClock in stead of Lineage Desk Clock
The bootanimation is made by my brother. It is the family coat of arms of the Scottish Mackay clan to which my family is linked.
I try to build this ROM on a weekly basis, but it mainly depends on when interesting features are available/merged
Download:
AndroidFileHost
Installation:
-Make sure you have recent TWRP installed (3.2.1-1)
-Make sure you have recent hardware blobs from MIUI (minimum 8.1.4)
-gapps can only be flashed on clean installs
-clean install (factory reset) if coming from another ROM, dirty flash if updating
I am open to suggestions for additions, but I prefer a clean ROM, just some basic extras over stock LineageOS has always been my approach for Mackay ROMs.

Hi, has your Mi5 experience random mobile signal drop? LTE signal drop?
Has this issue been resolved in this ROM? Thank you!

I don't use LTE, so I can't say for sure. In general, because this ROM follows LineageOS, it will have to deal with the same problems as well.

I use it myself in dual-SIM mode and never encounter any signal loss.
hi and thanks for this first of all. I'm surely going to try it, even just for seeing the bootanimation..i love all that matters Scotland.. your country and national anthem, rugby, braveheart etc
personally i don't use LOS for a very few and not so intrusive things i think. first of all date in status bar, like in most all other los roms. could you add it? don't think it would be too intrusive, but it is a real deal breaker for me
other thing i look for is multiple actions for HW buttons (like in RR.. show volume panel, show quick settings panel etc and not only the los standard ones) but that's secondary as i can also use a hw button remapper app for that
ah, and dt2s everywhere in lock screen would be great also!
bye will report after trying your rom!
@kasper_h wow! that is THE surprise. For the young ones in the community, Mackey kernel/rom was the goto option for our Galaxy S(1) ! Glad to have you in this part of the forum. Are you planning on getting involved with the Mi5 kernel business as well?
tested the rom quicky. enabled root in Dev settings for apps but couldn't get root access for mixplorer?
@kasper_h perhaps adding QC3 fix from this commit?

I still have my S1 lying around, but stopped developing for it long time ago.
At the moment, I first want a robust ROM being build, then I'll look into the kernel as well. On S1, performance depended a lot on the kernel, I haven't seen such spectacular results on mi5 yet.

Date in statusbar is something I may look into. I actually use the calendar status pro widget, which also gives day of month in the status bar. May other apps can do the same as far as I know.
Remapping HW buttons is not something I'm interested in

That's true, kernels are more mature now, performance-wise we may not win much (save it for the 32GB Mi5 with mild OC to 2.15Ghz). However, I think that due to Xiaomi's not 'fully' functional sources, there is space for improving the functionality aka charging speed, sound quality, maybe EAS or interactive governor tuning etc. Your expertise on kernel modding would be valuable to this community as well!! thanks

thanks for the answer! yes I'm using an app right now to visualize the date in status bar in jdc's aosp, but i don't like so much having to use an app just for that

OK, so here is a build with the QC3 patch and today's Lineage codebase. Also includes upstream OMS substratum patches:

Seems to work fine for me, will monitor charging speed in coming days.

But the version now in the making for LOS still seems to suffer from problems. The latest build I posted few days ago does work with QC.
What a great surprise to see you around here! Another one who was following your work on the i9000. Great times and marvelous phone :') Hope to see more from you for the mi5, for sure trying out this, although RR is my comfort zone since november when i got the phone, hard to beat that loyalty on a phone of mine
Thank you for kasper_h for the old, present and future work!

thanks but I can't use this rom for the reasons i poster earlier, so I'm sticking with RR for now. i am trying the boot.img from your rom in RR though, let's see if it fixes QC in RR too for sure it did boot and everything seems to work, so already better than i thought!
Hey there, I haven't updated my Note II (N7100) in a while so I was wondering what's on the custom ROMs scene these days.
Long story short, I came across a popular few listed below but it doesn't do much to help differentiate one ROM from another. While it's easy to say "give each a try & find out for yourself", I was hoping we can be a bit more objective to describe the functionality of each ROM & what they feature to make them stand out from the rest.
Ideally, I can keep the list updated following your feedback. Please feel free to give me your suggestions to improve it further. Thanks!

Are we able to do that ? I never knew that it was possible to exist a thread like that. Its going to be very helpful, if its going to be continued. I will definitely follow and get informed .
Thank you for creating this.
:good::good:
---------- Post added at 03:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:19 AM ----------
BUT IF WE WANT TO BE FAIR , we must inform that Aicp and Lineage roms have been updated recently
AICP has a daily base update so the last nightly is 11/6/2017
http://dwnld.aicp-rom.com/?device=n7100
Lineage's ROM also have been updatedd 3/6/2017
http://tilak.sergix44.ovh/n7100/
RR is not easy to keep track, as they release a rom and after a while it disappears from their server and an unofficial pops up and so on. I was never able to understand what is happening in that thread and this is very unfortunate since RR is (or was for NOTE 2) one of the most popular roms. It was the first not stock based, custom rom i flashed in my note 2
NucleaROM also has a newer version:
NucleaRom-V1.0.7-OFFICIAL[7.1.2]-n7100-20170525
http://nuclearom.com/download/nuclearom-v1-0-7-official7-1-2-n7100-20170525-1513-zip/?lang=en
and HenonHD , I think is going to surprise us pleasantly , with something even newer from them all
Tomorrow , if its OK, I will write my personal opinion for every one I have tried.
N7100 ROMs Table (Nougat) (updates stopped)
Moved to its own thread (here).
take a look in NucleaROM by @moludo. New built today 13/6/2017 is fantastic, with CM S-PEN support inbuilt.
I think its the top for now.

I don't see why not
You'll notice I've avoided subjective opinions when comparing the ROMs to avoid any kind of bias beyond what each of them offer. A similar [THREAD="3220724"][INDEX] thread[/THREAD] exists for our Note II & most other device forums but it hasn't been updated since the tail-end of last year so I'm aiming to just focus on a detailed "specs sheet" of ROMs.

I'm just keeping track of stable release dates. I'm sure you understand that it gets a bit trickier to keep track of nightly release dates of various ROMs. However, I'll make a note to label ROMs with a nightly release schedule as such.

ROMs table
NB: Unfortunately, sensors are not working on my Note 2 (water damage on 170708), so I can't check sensor related stuff anymore.
AICP 170702 (LineageOS):
Temperature is changing (good).
OpenCamera works now (!) (fixed beginning of July 2017)
XenonHD 170707 / 170714 / 170720 (LineageOS) (my current 'daily driver'):
Bluetooth transfer (to another Samsung device) not working (it is working in AICP / MM, also in CosmicOS/AOSP / N)
Temperature is always 30° (bad). Lockscreen shows static values '5.0V 30°C' (fixed in 170703; back in 170720)
Lockscreen: charging current always 0 'mAh' (minor)
OpenCamera cannot be started (fixed in 170703)
NucleaRom 170622 / 170627 / 170713 (LineageOS):
Bluetooth transfer: not working
Temperature is always 30° (bad). Lockscreen shows static values '5.0V 30°C'
OpenCamera not working (working in AICP/XenonHD)
RR 5.8.3 170419 (LineageOS) (thanks to CLaudioman2009):
NO HDMI out (neither in MM RR version)
NO screen mirroring to dongle (at least worked in the MM RR version)
Google camera takes photos but not video
NO xposed but can use some few magisk modules
RR 5.8.3 170714:
OpenCamera cannot be started (170714)
CosmicOS 170326 (AOSP):
Random reboots (!) (bad)
Bluetooth transfer works
Temperature is changing (good).
OpenCamera cannot be started (working in AOSP 7.1)
Signal strength indicator shows always 40%
Wifi does not work; flash void kernel v1.8.6 to fix it
crDroid 170730 / 170801 (LOS):
GPS not working
OpenCamera ok
Wifi ok
Thanks for your feedback, @jer194! Just added a "Flaw" column to the table to keep track of significant issues (+ their fixes) that users might want to aware of before committing to install a ROM.
Once again, I'd like to re-iterate to everyone that this is (at least for the time-being) an actively updated thread so your contribution is hugely appreciated for each & every ROM up there. Cheers!
Sorry Guys was all busy with my Sem exams, Hope you all are doing good,
Have so much of notifications to be checked on....
anyway, will see for a week for some new changes in RR, else will release a new stability fix update.
Special thanks to Christoph Schafer for his donation, its not the amount brother, its the appreciation which you shown matters...

The list of flaws for sure is incomplete, the ones in my post are just the ones I'm struggling with
Meanwhile, NucleaROM (170622) and XenonHD (170624) have received updates (see my earlier post).
I think that now that magisk is removed as a default root method and AICP has left us decide what to be used as root, AICP is coming back very strong among the three best for now , together with NucleaRom and HenonHD, which are still at the top three.
Hibin.m , now that he is back, has to give a boost if he intents to keep up, as RR is not what they used to be and what in other phones are still considered as a strong group.
Lineage is always the strong, solid but Spartan rom, which anyone can count on, to test if his phone is working as it should.
Its always the base of them all.
THESE ARE MY PERSONAL FEELING THIS WEEK and no one has to agree with me.
I think its like open season out there, all the kids , now that schools and colleges have finished lessons have come over, looking for things and futures they have left before new years holidays. Amazing how young people dont want to try new things but trying to keep things the way it was a long time ago. A lot of them are even asking how to go back to lolipop or KIT KAT.
TECHNOLOGY is not furniture where old is classic. Here old is outdated and not working anymore, as it cannt keep up new challenges.
Any way, sorry for that, I am mostly talking to my self

There is no obligation to fix flaws --- everybody is free to do so, if he/she feels like ...
(and there might be more interesting things to do out there).
Anyway, I've updated my two tables I had posted earlier (on N7100 ROMs, and on flaws).
Today i have in my mind this classification about the available roms for our note 2
1. XenonHD 14/7/2017
Everything seems to work just fine in that latest version of the rom
Counting: GPS, video everywhere, video calls in WhatsApp and Viber, built-in from now on. Highly battery friendly. Nova launcher in-built, dark theme option
2. NucleaRom
radioactive kernel of the rom is one of the most effective and customize-able, available now for our phone
also a flawless rom, smooth, fast, battery friendly, with all major functions working perfect.

very similar with the XenonHD, as they both share sources and DEV
looks slightly slower than the first 2 roms, but its a rom you can also very easy use a a daily driver.
These are my personal and only marks about the roms available right now.
The other roms are still to be update, or be tested since they where absent for a while
Dont you think you have to update threads with the new appeared rom(s),
or you are just waiting for them to mature a little more?

I'm trying to keep my ROM tables updated (see signature); crDroid has been added already.
My device lost some of its sensors, so I'm not able to test thoroughly anymore ...

I know you are doing great job documentary everything. Users haven't yet understand how great and useful is what you are doing. They will appreciate it eventually
so, new entries this week end. You have a lot work to do.
Waiting to see your very useful information
THANKS again for the great job you are doing
:good::good:
So, 2 new entries this week
Lineage's rom (Tilak's) and RR(hibin.m)
Both are updated with new sources and a lot of fixes in both of them.
Lineage's rom comes prerooted, RR provided 2 versions (prerooted and un rooted) for the user to choose.
I installed lineageSU in unrooted RR rom to have a ,as much as possible , equal base to compere the 2 roms.
What i have found out:
Lineage rom, with iSU on it, passes safety net check.
RR rom, can't pass. CTS profile false.
in Lineage rom GPS fixes in device only scan
In RR GPS is not fixing unless in high accuracy (BT WIFI)
In both roms when trying to do a normal voice call using BT mobile network is restarting , so its impossible to make or receive a call.
Only inbuilt camera is working on both roms
Open camera and Snap camera HDR are crashing
Lineage's rom feels more solid but RR is faster in antutu tests, giving you though a sence of a little instability.
Thats what I manage to understand from last night's testing

Thanks for sharing your findings!
I've updated my N7100 ROMs table accordingly.
Just for the RR GPS: it is working in my installation.
The best indicator is in SatStat, 'Satellites':
- if it shows '-/-', GPS is not working
- if it shows '0/0', GPS is working, and is just a matter of patience (and free sky) to get the satellite signals.

yes, you are right.
It took me some more time and a lot of open space, but finally got it FIXED.
Looks like first time takes a little more time when in device only mode
Kang Kernel
About
First with my story, ~4-5 years ago in the GB/ICS/JB/KK era I used to work on AOKP, a ROM for Android devices offering a lot of features. As time went on, we all got a bit burnt out from the project, and stopped actively working on it (though if this sounds interesting, the ROM is still kicking with new developers). I worked on a few projects for a bunch of devices (HP Touchpad, HTC One X, LG G2, LG Optimus G, Nexus 4). After taking a few years off and working for an Android OEM, I got the development itch again and snagged a Pixel 2 XL, and wanted to run a kernel I built.
This is a kernel I built for my own personal use, and it will probably evolve greatly as time passes (right now it is not incredibly different from stock). My personal priorities are always battery life and responsiveness under heavy load conditions. I am a big fan of doing a quantitative analysis on various performance-related aspects of the system.
Features
Updated to Linux v4.4.127
Safetynet passing
kcal color control
Undervolted CPU steps
MAC address randomization
CFQ upstreamed to latest
CRC disabled
fsync disabled (user controllable)
Wireguard support
Support and Installation
This should be compatible with any AOSP/Stock 8.1-based ROM, though I have only tested this on the Stock 8.1 April security update.
To install this, flash the ZIP in TWRP.
I usually wipe my Dalvik/ART cache after I flash as well, so give this a go if you're experiencing excessive battery drain/other issues.

Donations
I am not accepting donations for this, and I don't ever plan on accepting donations. If you would like to donate, please instead throw a couple bucks at the people listed in the "Additional Contributors" section, or donate it to a charity of your choice. I don't need money and I am simply releasing a kernel that I have built for my own personal use.
Thanks
nathanchance and the android-linux-stable project for providing a great updated base, and AnyKernel setup + being a great reference

Welcome @rohan32 :highfive:
Going stock on my replacement device tomorrow so I'll be giving this a whirl. Appreciate you sharing it and working on it. Sure do miss me some AOKP though
Nice to see you here! Kudos
How do I go from Flash kernel to this? I am on Android P stock.

Assuming this works on P, I just flashed in twrp over flash kernel and it worked fine.

Does this work on Android P?
Is there any reason you disabled fsync? I thought that can be potentially dangerous?

Also does wiping dalvik/art wipe memory?

This might work on P, but I haven't tested it on P at all, and it doesn't include the latest updates from the P branch from Google, so there might be some compatibility issues (or might not, totally depends on the scope of the changes Google pushed with P that isnt present in the April security update branch, and I haven't gotten the chance to peek at those changes just yet ).
Wiping dalvik/ART caches does not affect memory, it basically just clears the cache that your phone builds over time launching these apps. Totally not strictly necessary though.

Indeed, fsync flushes the file buffers contents to disk immediately, but incurs a small performance hit. With fsync disabled, the buffers are still flushed to disk, but just not as frequently, so there is a potential for data loss in some rare conditions, but most likely not. I definitely get someone's concern about disabling it though which is why you can toggle it via a kernel manager app .
Flashed this on my backup p2xl yesterday and the battery life has been great. I think I might move it over to my daily driver and give it a full run. Thanks!
@rohan32 - didn't you Dev for a some Nexus devices as well? I remember the name.
Great kernel. Really impressed with performance and battery life

This kernal is very good for battery life and smooth performance. Thanks to Mr Rohan for such nice kernal.
Nice so far. I just flashed over Flash. I was happy with Flash so I am sure this will be just as good. Kernel feels smooth, battery feels like it is improving, even slightly better intimacy at home which makes the wife happy. What a kernel!
Thank you @rohan32
@rohan32 i just flashed your kernel and fast charging doesn't work for me
I reported the same issue in flash kernel thread and @nathanchance figured the issue and was related to pixel having two different battery cells or like that and he fixed that.
Can you please update it?
Cheers ?

Thanks for the nice kernel. Love especially the mac randomation! Only thing missing is dtw. Would be great if you can add this gesture maybe in mai release.
I just checked out the aospa Twitter page and they are devices that are running the new version of paranoid Android. I am wondering if there are no maintainers for this device as we do not get it built for our devices I believe that it can be built off of source but I know that there compilation methods are abid difficult. Anybody want to take a stab at it and build this wonderful run for our devices. @slothdabski @calsurferpunk @kingbri

I read this on their gsi xda post
(NOT using A/B partitioning scheme (ie. A-Only)
Bummer
It's a device specific flag that can be set up to run on a/b devices... It's just a matter of someone picking up the project for our phones.. I do recall that back in the day the way to build it was different from other operating systems so maybe the setup was different and nobody here has that set up possibly? I'm trying to stay patient but I am currently running DU and is running phenomenally.. I do understand that paranoid Android is very barebone right now but the caf source makes it really good on battery low and stability. I recall way back and my Galaxy S2 days ... And this is just a great project. If anyone out there can build this for us you would be incredible

Paranoid Android was very cool in 2013, I used it on my SGS4 back then on Android 4.3. They had this engine where you could set the phone to tablet, phablet or phone mode and change DPI. You could even do this on a per-App basis! Very nice :good:
On top they had a plethora of setting - oh and they had this psychedelic design! E.g. for OTA updates (IIRC) they showed this one: https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/nexusae0_lennon.jpg
But now, in 2019, what is special about PA?

Nothing really, a lot of the stuff that they Incorporated back in the day or something that comes native on Android nowadays.. PA Theme engine is somewhat redundant especially how it lets you theme per app basis somewhat like substratum can do... I don't see Halo coming back, and it wasn't back in the Android 7 or 8 builds of paranoid Android... I will say one of the things that they have going for them would be the caf base.. as I mentioned before it is extremely fluid and great on battery life.. ever since @molesarecoming left the dev scene for this operating system, it honestly seemed to have died as far as what features where available on this... I guess now it's good for nostalgia and stability as far as features go I don't see what they can offer that we don't already get with other options... I can't say this though, the battery life has always been good on these ROMs
Hey,
I have a Poco F3, I unlocked the bootloader recently, and I want to know which ROM should I get or is the best for you. I tried xiaomi.eu, but I prefer AOSP/pixel (I tried some, but I can't make a choice). What is the best, I know for now there is crDroid, Pixel Experience Plus but unofficial, Pixel Extended, etc Should I wait for more stable, official or new custom ROMS ?
What are the pro/cons or features of each ?
|
|
Edit : anyone can share his opinion here and/or ask on this thread

Thanks in advance !
In terms of features you can't get more feature rich then crdroid. Most ROMs are rock stable and the one main missing feature dt2w is going to be coming in the next week or so. I'm currently using pixel extended and I've had no problem and am thoroughly enjoying it

Thank you, I'm currently using crDroid but the lack of Google Apps bothers me. I was using pixel extended but I had some bugs. I might retry, I'm hesitant for now with pixel experience plus too.

ps : it nice not to rely to much on Google btw

Running Lineage on mine, with Quantic kernel, Micro-g, I am getting insane battery life, This phone has been an amazing upgrade for me after being on Mi6 for over 3 years.
for a beta Build, I have yet to run into a single issue, everything is running smoothly.
I have the feeling this phone will receive lots of love from developers and will have custom roms for years to come.
Edit: on my build I have finally fixed battery drain when, double tap, ambient pick-up, or AOD is enabled, it makes no difference, my phone dozes beautifully at night. How is it with other ROMs?
The key for me and everyone i think is the kernel, no matter what I changed with the original kernel that comes with lineage the phone gets no doze, only when I use Quantic + Lineage everything is 100%.

Did you flash the kernel only via TWRP or is it TWRP and fastboot dtbo?
Also, have you had issues surrounding running apps like Google Maps or Kodi? They install and boot up but crash seconds later.
best currently MIUI BASED rom? ive tried miui.eu but ive found some bugs.
